One of my favorite pages from the new Illustrated Hunger Games:

It is so beautifully done and shows how young Thresh is, which is one of the things I felt the movie missed the mark on with some. There’s so much captured in his expression, the guilt over killing, the confliction over letting Katniss go, the grief for Rue. And the mockingjays in the sky being a recurring motif throughout the book.

Just got my copy of The Hunger Games: Illustrated Edition

Something I really want to point out that stuck out to me right away is that Thresh is drawn like a child. He is so frequently described as huge by Katniss, his size and strength are often remarked upon. That, coupled with the casting in the movies, makes us forget how genuinely young this child is.

This is especially poignant as young black children (particularly young black boys) frequently have their child status denied to them. They are treated by the media, by police, by adults in a position of authority - as if they are all older than they really are.

So seeing this drawing of Thresh, an older child, but still a CHILD. Being allowed to look every bit the youth that he is. Every bit as scared and traumatized as he likely was... It really resonates with me.

This might be one of my favorite drawings from the book, purely for the sobering reality it forces onto me for this character I thought I conceptually "knew".

I'll post it here, but for anyone who doesn't have access to the hunger games books here is a link to the Google drive I set up to download the trilogy, Illustrated, TBOSS and SOTR. Each has en Epub file which just means it's an online book file, most devices should have a native book viewer, along with a PDF file which I'm sure most people are familiar with.
