5SOS5 (Deluxe version) track by track overview
Who I have gathered each song is primarily written by/whose story.
As of May 8, 2023 (can always change of course where I’m still unsure in a few places, I remark where).
"Complete Mess" - Luke brought the romantic “you make me complete” chorus, Ash and Cal went and wrote the verses. So basically Luke and Ash, it’s their story together. Ash has the pic of Luke wearing the associated shirt on his phone, ready to show people.
"Easy for You to Say" - Ash wrote the topline (aka lyrics). Which is cool because that’s who I suspected the first time I heard it on their tour. It sounds like his writing. It’s about wanting to settle down in Australia.
"Bad Omens" - possibly Ash wrote, he’s also replied about it on twitter to a fan saying it’s about letting go of people in your life (he also gave the director idea for the music video), I have suspicions though that its about Michael and Calum’s relationship because of hints in the music video. The main character is wearing an earring like Michael. Reference to brown eyes (Crystal’s are blue, Cal’s are brown)
"Me Myself & I" - has a Michael feel to it but I’m not 100% on this one. Being selfish and self sabotaging and excessive lying.
"Take My Hand" (Joshua Tree version) - Luke credited as sole writer, it’s about his own transformational experience.
"Carousel" - Ash, no one talks about lyrics that passionately unless they write them (see the Making of Carousel video), also pay attention to how Luke and Ash are towards each other. “Epic voice” heart eyes ❤️, “epic song”, then Luke singing like Nickelback (shared fave band of theirs).
"Older" (featuring Sierra Deaton) - Luke and Sierra wrote the start of a take on 50’s love songs, then after Luke jokingly sent a voice note to Michael, he pushed them to finish it. Stunt song, but they shaded it for music video. Ash dances with a BLONDE curly haired lady as his partner. At end of video only see the back of a female with Luke for a few seconds. Should’ve been Luke and Ash duet.
"Haze" - not sure, Ash said it took the longest time to write. The part where Luke and Ash are singing to each other about when they’re together don’t have to play pretend. “And when you pick me up, now I don't have to play pretend, And I am human once again”
"You Don't Go To Parties" - Ash, wanting someone who isn’t right there. Reference to 5 years, it’s possible when they finally locked it down since they moved in together (2017) 5 years from when this song was released. Then, there’s the blue sapphire ring (5 year anniversary) that showed up on Ash’s hand where he had been wearing the matching with Luke black onyx ring, on 5sos5 listening party day. Can also have a theme relating to sobriety changing how you relate with partying.
“Blender” - seems to be Calum?
"Caramel" - Luke and Ash written, with John Feldmann for production, Cal for bassline. Lashton love song dealing with how life has gotten more complicated “it used to be easy” but they've been in love so long "It's been a while since you and I have been where we started, I don't want to let it fade away" don’t want to give up on how they’ve felt since the beginning of falling in love “don’t like it fake, I relate, I think it’s true love”. “Love like a landslide, I kiss you Goodnight”, Saying at the end of the day, I still love you. Possibly connected with Fleetwood Mac “Landslide”, sonically the guitar strumming is similar. Ash is a big fan of FM. Landslide about Nicks’ romance with bandmate Buckingham.
“Best Friends” - the whole group, written late in the album making process about their own friendship and to give fans a camaraderie song.
“Bleach” - written with Sarah Aarons, was originally a jingle pitch for Clorox. I'm unsure if to connect this with anything or what to connect it with. Sometimes, a song is a song.
“Red Line” - Ash being melancholy, The Red Line was the train the boys took while living in London, to their songwriting sessions (and whatever else in the area they needed to get to).
“Moodswings” - All 4 have credit. Response to Luke’s “Slipping Away”? Seems to parallel in concept to that song a bit. My suspicion is the lyrics are written by Ash and Luke, Cal for the bassline and/or helping with cohesive lyrics, then Michael for production.
“Flatline” - Ashton wrote, when asked what it was about during the youtube live, Luke slid the laptop towards Ash to answer. I think Ash wrote it for himself about Luke (with a dark twist to it like he did with Complete Mess).
“Emotions” - Michael?, During Ash ig live, right after the line  "I don't wanna think about it, Maybe that's why I'm always high”, Ash said “it’s about me”. Possibility it’s not written by Michael, it was just Michael who sang it because he sounded the best. The guys have said they choose who sings certain parts by who sounds the best at it.
“Bloodhound” - not sure. Too much coincidence with Ash solo album song titled “Greyhound”. So could be Ash.
“TEARS!” - Ash, of course. “Diamond tears”. Is it a coincidence Luke has a song called “Diamonds” on WFTTWTAW? Doesn’t feel “alive” and is “crying”. Why such torment? Depression/sadness and how alone it can make you feel.

Your timeline of V&D was great! What is V&J's?
Well, the best we know they met in Feb 2012 during NYC Fashion Week. 📸
Tumblr media
She was 17 and he was... not. 🙃
No idea if they developed "a friendship" right away or if this was just an eager fangirly pic sesh thing, but the next proof of them "hanging out" came in Sept 2013, again at a fashion event in NYC when he showed her cat videos on Youtube or some such surely innocent shit. 🧐📱
Tumblr media
After that, the next sightings came in the spring of 2014 when things REALLY kicked off and during that spring and summer she started spending time with him in LA and he lugged her with him to San Fran and on tour across Europe and the Med vacay and also the US during the Carnivores tour.
Tumblr media
They kept it going hot and heavy/on and off (even tho he had some side quests too... 🙄) throughout 2015...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... as well as 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. 👫
They spent one Christmas together up in Seattle...
Tumblr media
... and she had a really exciting time at Camp Mars. 😛
Tumblr media
Then came June 2019 when they were snapped looking über-domesticated in LA...
Tumblr media
... but right after this something went horribly wrong and they broke up. 💔
VK escaped LA and spent that entire summer with Mads & co in NYC and the Med, and suddenly decided she needs a dog in her life and thus Cosma happened! 🐶
Not at all a bandaid for her broken heart or anything... 🙃🩹
But there was light at the end of the tunnel tho because in December 2019 VK and her son moved to LA, and bing bang boom along came New Years and suddenly the lovebirds were sneaking off to Kauai! 🏖
Tumblr media
And then came the Joshua Tree couples retreat with Stevie and the missus, Reedy and the missus, and spinsters GFlo and Eiza, and suddenly VK wasn't a dirty little secret anymore! 🤷🏼‍♀️
Tumblr media
Suddenly she was allowed to pose in photos with the whole group AND get tagged in photos too which had never happened before! 🤷🏼‍♀️
If you ask me, the reason why JL was able to get her back is by promising to make some easements to his hysterical rules about showing and linking her into his life... 🫠
And then just weeks after that Covid came crashing down on us, and VK moved into Casa Craphole (but for some reason Cosma wasn't as lucky... 🤔) and they kept vacaying in Malibu and national parks and all sorts of places during the summer/fall of 2020.
In the spring of 2021 JL left for Italy to film HoG, and that sadly marked the beginning of the end... 😟
VK stayed in Nevada (ODDLY WITH COSMA THIS TIME! 🤔) and when JL returned from Italy in April he flew straight to NYC and VK followed a couple of days later, and I guess this is when shit really hit the fan and they ended up calling it quits for good. 💔🤷🏼‍♀️

U2 is joining forces with Irving and Jeffrey Azoff’s Full Stop Management after nearly 10 years with Madonna and Red Hot Chili Peppers manager Guy Oseary, sources tell Variety.
A rep for Full Stop had no comment; the news was first reported by Hits.
The group has not toured since completing its “Joshua Tree” anniversary tour in December of 2019, and it seems likely a new album is in the works if not nearly done. The band has not released a new album since “Songs of Experience” in December of 2017. Earlier this week, singer Bono announced a book tour in support of his forthcoming memoir, “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story,” which arrives on Nov. 1; he will tour North America and Europe throughout November.
Given Full Stop’s strength in the touring business — they manage Harry Styles, who has been on a wildly successful global tour for nearly a year — it seems likely that was a factor in the Azoffs’ favor, along with the company’s close relationship with longtime tour promoters Live Nation.
Also rumored — and reasonably so — Irving Azoff’s participation in a new Las Vegas venue, the Sphere, which would make a fine home for the 360-concert model that the band has employed on its many worldwide stadium treks.
However, the news does come as a surprise. In July, U2 singer Bono told Variety of Oseary, “Trustworthiness is an old-school term, and whilst the manager-client relationship does not require a Hippocratic oath, Guy O. takes this very seriously. That’s one of the reasons we work so well together. He is a most trustworthy person. In the early days, the temperature could get raised as we would debate different aspects of how we go about our business. But in recent times, not so much. He feels like family.”’
When Oseary took on U2 for management in 2013, it was with the encouragement of the band’s longtime manager Paul McGuinness, who had retired. Oseary, a fan of the band since his teens, described the succession as being handed a “great responsibility.”

The lyrics, which portray the mind of a serial killer, were inspired by lead singer Bono's reading of Norman Mailer's 1980 novel The Executioner's Song, and other related works.
U2 debuted "Exit" on 8 March 1987 for a broadcast of The Old Grey Whistle Test. Bono introduced it as "a song about a religious man, a fanatic, who gets into his head the idea he calls 'the hands of love'."[29] It was next performed on 2 April 1987 in Tempe, Arizona, during the first concert of The Joshua Tree Tour. Clayton noted that the manner in which they created the song inadvertently caused a problem for U2, saying "when you're in a touring situation you have to learn numbers that were never actually written so much as spontaneously created."[1] "Exit" was played at all 109 concerts on the tour, and was frequently followed by a snippet of the Them song "Gloria", written by Van Morrison.[30] Following the conclusion of the Joshua Tree Tour, U2 performed "Exit" on only one more occasion (until the Joshua Tree Tour 2017): 14 October 1989 in Melbourne, Australia, on the Lovetown Tour, almost two years after its previous performance.[31] In 2007, U2's manager Paul McGuinness said that the song had been "slightly tainted" after the trial of Robert John Bardo, speculating that it had fallen out of favour with the band following the incident.[32]
In 2006, Bono stated "When things aren't going right and I'm feeling like we're not communicating, I go through terrible things on stage." He likened his emotions on those occasions to "a big blackness", and found that performing the song helped him to purge them from his mind on some occasions.[33] Several scenes in the 1988 film Rattle and Hum depict Bono with his arm in a sling, a result of his falling and dislocating his shoulder during a performance of "Exit" on 20 September 1987 in Washington, D.C.[34] The concert was being filmed for the movie, and the Edge stated that "the show was not going well".[35] Bono fell while running across the stage "in an attempt to try [to] get something going". Recalling the incident, Bono said "['Exit'] had taken me to some ugly place... but it was rage that caused it. That was when I realized rage is an expensive thing for your general well-being."[35] On another occasion he said "I just want to take a bath after we do that. I just want to wash it off my skin."[36] Graham wrote that "performances of 'Exit' would grow ever more fraught and purgative

Movie Review - Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman and Album Review - U2 “Songs of Surrender”
I can’t think of a better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day today than with a double dose of my favorite Irish rock band ever U2! I’ve been a longtime fan since discovering their early music videos in the mid 80s. Then with The Joshua Tree, they blew up and took the world by storm: a personality band where singer Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. were bigger than the sum of their parts and brought their sound together with meaningful lyrics. I’ve been lucky enough to see this band on three separate occasions in 1997, 2001 and 2005. Through this blog, I’ve had a chance to do album reviews of the recent anniversary editions of The Joshua Tree in 2017, All That You Can’t Leave Behind in 2020, and Achtung Baby in 2021. This week I got the chance to do an album review of the band’s new album Songs of Surrender which is being released today as well as the new documentary film Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman, which premieres on Disney+ today.
Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman documentary

movie poster
There are a lot of things about this doc that got my attention when I heard about it: (1) director Morgan Neville is one of the great documentarians of the now. In addition to winning an Oscar for 20 Feet From Stardom, he directed one of my favorite docs of the last decade Won’t You Be My Neighbor? about Fred Rogers. But he has always had a passion for musicians as his subjects, notably the docs he did on Johnny Cash, Keith Richards and Yo-Yo Ma. (2) host David Letterman is a legend! His brand of comedy truly reinvented the talk show format when he hosted Late Night and Late Show, and now in his “retirement” his interview show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, he is always a reliable host / interviewer. (3) U2 is always an interesting doc subject. Phil Joanou’s concert doc U2 Rattle and Hum showed the band on tour in 1987 in North America and immersing themselves in American culture as they became the biggest band on the planet, Mark Pellington and Catherine Owens’ concert doc U2 3D showed the band on their 2006 tour in 3D, and Davis Guggenheim’s From the Sky Down was a deep dive into the making of Achtung Baby. All of which were different approaches to the same subject. Bottom line: I knew going into this movie that even if it was shot on a cell phone and was just Dave, Bono and Edge reading a phone book, it would have something interesting about it.
Tumblr media
The Edge, David Letterman and Bono
The doc shows Letterman on his first visit to Dublin, Ireland. He goes around with U2′s Bono and The Edge (Adam and Larry were not available at the time). The band members show Dave around, perform songs, and talk with Dave about their band as well as Ireland’s history. There are a number of other interviewees including musician Glen Hansard.
What was interesting about this doc is that it is actually two different docs that dovetail into each other: Dave learning about Dublin from the locals and U2 talking about their history having formed their band in Dublin in the mid 70s when they were teens. As someone who hasn’t visited Dublin (other than a layover at their airport), I was very engaged because it showed how both the country and the band have had similar trajectories, as Dave pointed out the country is a little over 100 years old, the band is almost 50 years old. As we’ve seen on his Netflix show, Dave is actually a good interviewer. But the real star of this doc is the amazing performance footage. Highly impressive to see Bono and The Edge together with maybe a few other musicians playing their songs in an intimate environment. This is one of the best music / pop culture docs I expect to see this year (and it’s only March)!
Bono & The Edge... premieres on Disney+ today: https://disneyplusoriginals.disney.com/movie/bono-and-the-edge-a-sort-of-homecoming-with-dave-letterman

Songs of Surrender album
Tumblr media
album cover
It’s been over 5 years since the last U2 studio album, Songs of Experience released in Dec. 2017. I say this because at over 5 years, this is one of the longest gaps between albums for U2, No Line on the Horizon released in Feb. 2009 and Songs of Innocence released in Sept. 2014 is slightly longer. I bring this up because it’s been a few years and now expectations are high. What they have released is something completely different than anything else in their discography: re-recording and re-interpreting 40 of their songs over the course of their career, Songs of Surrender.
Tumblr media
U2 circa late 70s
Recorded during the pandemic, this album serves as a companion to Bono’s recent memoir Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story. The album is 40 songs, spread out over 4 CDs (there are other editions being released, but I got to review the 4-disc version) and it clocks in at almost 3 hours. The album reminds me a lot of MTV Unplugged live albums, where musicians would perform their songs acoustic and re-interpret them (maybe even change the lyrics if the mood struck). U2 never did an episode of MTV Unplugged, but as far back as the Zoo TV Tour, they would have a portion of their concerts where they performed acoustic. This is like the MTV Unplugged episode the band had up their sleeve and are just giving us now. These songs are stripped down to their core essence, no studio trickery or sound effect bells-and-whistles here. In most of these songs, it is very few instruments and Bono is singing as he is in 2023, “Stories for Boys” being the most obvious example of changing the song to who they are now. There’s even some cellos and violins on some tracks. This is a solid album from start to finish. Many U2 detractors have complained that there is too much reliance, especially from The Edge, on technology and guitar effects. This is the album that will shut up those detractors! The entire band is a well-oiled machine that all play off each other so well and this album is both a look back and a look at the here and now.

They had recorded The Unforgettable Fire at Slane Castle, outside Dublin, and this time they rented Danesmoate, a Georgian mansion in Rathfarnham. In God’s Country (Live from the Joshua Tree Tour 2017): Music: U2. I will never forget seeing these back in 1987 aged 14, until then I had little knowledge of rock music. As usual, nobody else will have a copy of this one-off vinyl collection and it won't be for sale online or in store. Twenty years on from its debut, The Joshua Tree still stands up (figuratively the actual Joshua tree on the cover sadly died back in 2000), and not just because singer Bono is still campaigning for the Third World, or that America's still intervening. Join me on my musical journey on the road with U2 to the 75 shows I have seen since the Zoo TV tour in 1992. A detailed explanation of the "Goldmine Grading Guide," the industry standard. "Goldmine Record Album Price Guide" features: Updated prices for more than 100,000 American vinyl LPs released since 1948. The Joshua Tree entered the US album charts at No.7 and reached No.

Ive gone back to vinyl in recent years and had to have this as such its such an iconic part of my younger days. THE FIFTH STUDIO album from Irish rockers U2 was a welcome change of pace for radioland when it was released March 9, 1987.

so, I don’t know if you noticed but I quite like this new stage Michael Buble will use at his only two shows on the UK and Ireland next year. I almost feel I have seen it before.
