Pranks Come With Consequences
(TickleTober Day 27: Hysterical)
Summary: Jack takes a prank too far and David wants revenge
Pairing: implied none
Word Count: 1,053
A/N: HELLO FIRST NEWSIES FIC?!?! 😨
———————————————————
In a cramped and dimly lit room, the unmistakable smell of ink and newsprint lingered in the air. Jack Kelly leaned against a wooden table, a sly grin spreading across his face as he watched David Jacobs furiously review the evening’s edition of the New York World.
“What did you do, Jack?” David’s voice carried an edge, his eyes narrowing as he came across a particular line in the paper—a line he definitely did not write.
“Aw, come on, Davey. It’s just a little joke!” Jack replied, chuckling. “No harm done, right?”
David slammed the paper onto the table, his eyes filled with indignation.
“A joke? You call replacing my carefully crafted sentences with ludicrous innuendos a joke? You jeopardized my credibility!”
Jack’s eyes widened as he registered David’s fury. A sense of dread settled over him, and he stammered,
“Look, I- uh- I didn’t think you’d get this mad... I’m sorry.”
David’s glare deepened, making Jack’s heart skip a beat. Then, with a sudden swiftness, David lunged at him, knocking Jack onto the beat up sofa.
“Oh, you’re gonna be sorry, alright,” David growled.
Before Jack could react, David pinned him down, his fingers swiftly descending towards Jack’s vulnerable sides.
Usually, David was gentle, employing feathery strokes to elicit laughter; but not this time.
This time, he dug his fingers in, scribbling rapidly and relentlessly into the sensitive flesh.
“WHAHAA- DAVEY, STAHAHAP!”
“Say you’re sorry!” David’s voice was stern, but his eyes twinkled.
“EEK- I-I’M SOHOHORRY!!” Cried Jack, flailing aimlessly under the torturous sensations.
“You don’t sound very sorry.”
David shifted to rake over his friends tummy, moving his hands in a circular motion, relishing how Jack’s laughter got louder and his belly seemed to quiver sensitively.
He’d been tickling the blonde for less than two minutes and he was already hysterical, something David found both ridiculous and endearing.
“NOO, DAVEY, MEHEHERCY!!”
The brunette laughed at that, not halting his attack.
“Aw, you don’t like this? It’s just a little joke, remember?” He teased, causing a bright red blush to form on Jack’s face which was adorned with a childlike smile as he thrashed and guffawed.
“NOHOHOHO, DAVE! I CAHAHAHAN’T!!”
Normally, David would relent by now; but in this moment, he was a man of vengeance and he wasn’t gonna stop until he felt that the little prankster had truly learned his lesson.
Besides, anyone with a brain could see the sparkling joy in Jack’s eyes. He was always up for mischief in any way, shape, or form, thus making it enjoyable for the both of them.
David’s nimble fingers wandered up to his victims underarms, drilling his thumbs into the hollows and earning a snort from the boy.
Jack squealed and kicked, slamming his arms down to his sides, which didn’t help at all; in fact, it only seemed to make it tickle more.
“GAHAHAHA- NOT THERE, NOT THEHEHERE!!” He cackled, tears of mirth starting to fall down his face as he wriggled like a worm on a hook, unable to escape the ruthless tickling.
David grinned, digging in harder and making Jack scream with laughter.
“Aw, what’s the matter, Jack? Does this tickle? Does it? Maybe next time, you’ll think of the consequences before pulling a stupid prank like that.”
Jack’s bright boisterous laughter echoed through the room, almost filling it with a feeling of warmth.
“DAVEHEHEHEY!! I-I CAHAHA- MEHER-MERCYYY!”
The troublemakers struggling was beginning to falter, going limp and surrendering to the tickly torment and letting himself be consumed by his own hysterical reactions.
David pulled his hands away for a moment to give Jack a breather, though it was clear by the fire in his eyes that he wasn’t finished quite yet.
“Well? You ready for more tickles?” He teased, wiggling his fingers just above the blonde’s ribs, knowing it was a tickle hot spot.
Jack’s eyes widened comically and his squirming picked up again, renewed with a newfound desperation.
“Oh no. nononono, Davey, plehehehease! I’m sohohorryyy!!” Giggled Jack, tingling with anticipation as he watched those scarily skilled digits inch closer and closer to his most ticklish spot, both eager and dreadful.
“Nope. Not buying it. I don't think you’re truly sorry yet.” Smirked the brunette, a devious glint in his eye.
“I am, I am!! Dahahavey, pleHEHEHEASE- OH GOHOHOD!”
A mixture of snorts, shrieks, and squeals filled the room as Jack was tossed into a bout of hysterics, kicking and thrashing like a wild horse as David’s fingers dug harshly into his ribs, pinching skittering and squeezing the sensitive spot.
“Aw, listen to that beautiful laughter. You’re just too adorable when you’re all helpless and squirmy~” David cooed, delighting in the way Jack’s cheeks managed to flush even darker, taking on a cherry red hue.
“NOHOHOOOO!! D-DAVEY, STOHOHOHOP!” Jack pleaded, struggling to breathe through all the laughter.
“Stop what? Tickling you, or calling you cute?”
“BOHOHOHOTH!! EEK- MEHERCY, MERCEHEHEHEY!!”
Figuring the boy had learned his lesson, David began to ease up; but there was one last thing he wanted to do.
“Alright, I think you’ve learned your lesson. But just to make sure…”
Quickly pulling Jack’s shirt up, David lowered his head and blew a loud raspberry right on the blonde’s ribs, getting a shrill shriek in response.
“NAHAHAH- DAHA- PLEHE- CAHAHAN’T BREHEHEATHE-”
At this point, Jack was nearly incoherent.
His body went completely still and he seemed to lose his voice, with a bright smile glued to his face as, he let his head fall back as he let out silent happy laughter.
Seeing his friend was genuinely struggling to breathe, the brunette pulled away, getting off of the boy and giving him some room to calm down.
“You alright?” He asked, getting a tired nod from Jack who was gasping for air and giggling from the phantom tickles.
“Good. Now let this be a lesson… next time you wanna pull a stupid prank like that, you better be prepared for the consequences.”
Jack nodded frantically, still flushed from the attack.
“Heard you loud and clehehear; no more pranks… for now… hehe” He grinned cheekily, David merely rolling his eyes with exasperation.
“You’re incorrigible, Jack…” David chuckled fondly.
Jack Kelly could be a real handful sometimes, but David, no matter how frustrated he could get with his friend’s shenanigans, wouldn’t have him any other way.

The Fourth Annual Davey Awards - The Nominees!
Hello! Every year I hold the annual Davey Awards for brilliance in motion pictures that move. This is our fourth year, and it promises to be one that is a year. Let's get to the nominees. Please note that there are some big movies (The Boy and the Heron, Poor Things, The Iron Claw, Ferrari, Wonka, The Taste of Things, for example) that I haven't been able to see and won't be able to see for a while. FEATURE: A Soundtrack for the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? Do you notice the colder nights and the mall decorations? That’s because the holidays are almost upon us, and what better way to get into a festive mood than to blast a Christmas playlist all day long? For that, we prepared a list of songs for the season just for you! From parties with karaoke sessions to chill family nights, it’s all here.
Tumblr media
Photo edited by: Charlize Yamo
Christmas festivities wouldn’t be complete without the classics that we all know and love. Even though we normally don’t hear them outside of the holiday season, somehow, we can sing all the words as soon as the first note plays. Here are three of those songs:
All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee
If you’re tired of the classics and are looking for more mainstream pop sounds, we have some tunes just for you. These are perfect for when you’re at a Christmas party and it’s time to play games or indulge in the potluck:
25th by Tori Kelly Alone for Christmas by Ty Dolla $ign, Kiana Lede Here This Christmas by Gwen Stefani Marry Christmas by salem ilese My Only Wish (This Year) by Britney Spears Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande Only When It Snows by Nova Miller
After the high-energy party vibe, it’s time to chill. Put on some background music while chatting and opening gifts with your family, like these:
What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve? by The Carpenters I Wish It Would Snow by Dave Barnes Home For The Holidays by Matt Belsante Santa Baby by Haley Reinhart Christmas at Home by Madison Olds, Nearly York
Some people also spend the holidays with their special someone. Though it’s not Valentine’s Day, there’s no shortage of Christmas love songs. Among those, we picked three of the best to share. Of course, these can be enjoyed regardless if you’re single, dating, crushing on someone who doesn’t like you back, or in a complicated situationship:
The Greatest Gift by Leroy Sanchez One I’ve Been Missing by Little Mix Think of Christmas by Anne-Marie
There are also many things about Christmas in the Philippines that can only be captured by OPM. One of them is caroling which happens every year, without fail. Aside from the iconic caroling staples Sa May Bahay Ang Aming Bati and Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit, we also have well-known ABS-CBN Christmas Station IDs such as Star ng Pasko (2009), Thank You for The Love (2015), and Magkasama Tayo Sa Kwento Ng Pasko (2013). But that’s not all there is to OPM Christmas songs. Here are a few bops that perfectly encapsulate the Filipino Christmas experience:
Halo-halo by The Itchyworms Bibingka by Ben&Ben No Snow by Reese Lansangan Araw-Araw Pasko by Matthios, Gloc 9
No matter what kind of music you’re into, Christmas songs will always evoke a feeling of joy and nostalgia that cannot be accomplished by other songs. It reminds us of parols in October, Noche Buena, approaching our relatives with our hands ready to receive red angpaos, Simbang Gabi, and the season of giving. The holiday season would be incomplete without the accompaniment of Christmas carols.
As a little gift, we prepared a Spotify playlist that you can blast at your next Christmas party: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/64YIXg8YIPKpyqUtV8Hocx?si=f028338959724e42 //by Charlize Yamo

a Fjord/Jester playlist 21 songs / 1 hr, 17 min
I was going for episodes 100 - 120 vibes with this playlist. This kinda-sorta has an order, but can also be listened to on shuffle with no consequences. There are some Fjord songs, some Jester songs, some for both of them. Enjoy!
I’m going to write my favorite line(s) from each song below the cut.
Are You Alright? / Ulrik Munther
But at times when I’m feeling low I doubt who I am, who you are, and what the future holds But I try not to let it show Cause I don’t want to worry you
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic / Sleeping At Last
Every time that I come near her I just lose my nerve as I’ve done from the start
Talk to Me / Dave Thomas Junior
Take my truth and tell me yours
What Have I Done / Dermot Kennedy
I wanna get it right for once Oh, I’ve been knocked out and beat but this feeling is fleeting
Wait For Me / Jack Curley
You know I’d never give up Hoping I’m the one you’re thinking of Even though it hurts you know that I will do it again
I Want To Hold Your Hand / T.V. Carpio
It’s such a feeling that, my love I can’t hide
Take Your Time / Humbear
You’ve built some walls up that might need to come down Take your time And if you need a hand take mine
Walls - Naked Edition / Ruben
But you need to understand I don’t do this See I’m a brick away and I had one call I need you now
Atlas: Heart / Sleeping At Last
I am short of breath standing next to you
Sea Meets Earth / Fever Fever
And I am just waiting for the time to be right To tell you how I’ve loved you for a while

Lose It / Oh Wonder
Find a place and lose it You can do it Won’t you dance with me?
Love / Nathan Wagner
I promise I won’t let you feel alone Though all the world can be so cold I’ll keep you warm, I’ll keep you warm Just let me in
Human / dodie, Tom Walker

Now I see clearly it’s you I’m looking for All of my days Soon I’ll smile I know I’ll feel this loneliness no more All of my days

Will you hold me while the waves sing us to sleep Will you hold me while the waves rock us gently

WHO WOULD YA BE WITHOUT YR FRIENDS? from Rick Berlin on Vimeo.
Soon after the pandemic hit and I stopped working (St Pats) my roommate, Alex Gang, pointed out that I wasn’t getting any exercise. (At Doyles I clocked in between 3-5 miles a night walking all over the joint.) Thus began, at Alex’s urging, The Walkabouts. The ‘constitutionals’. I loved it. The slowing down pace, the places I’d hurtle past in a car. On my own it could sometimes feel like obligatory homework, but once outside, I was happy to be there. Solo was cool but I realized that if I could ask a friend of mine to walk with me, conversation would quicken the time. Since I’ve not been to the Behan or was yet to land a new job, my social life was void. But on these walks my friend(s) and I would have conversations that lasted a lot longer than they might have at a bar or glancing off co-workers in a ping pong rush. An hour, give or take, was a super good time for all those reasons. Some friends I hadn’t seen for nearly 20 years showed up. Dave Richmond (long ago ally at those Jacques Cabaret clubhouse nights) brought a bag of ‘magic rocks’ which I’d hand out (until I ran outa them) to whomever was with me. Ever the annoying ‘Dad’ Documentarian, I took evidence selfies so I could post em up on facebook. Then #thenickelanddimeband wound up back in the studio to work on a 7 song ep. ‘Who Would Ya Be Without Yr Friends?’ was one of the tunes. Back in 2019 during my surgery convalescence I asked Shamus Moynihan how I could thank everyone who chipped in on a GoFundMe site for the weeks I was outa work. ‘Write a song,’ he said. This is that song, only the 2nd blues song I’ve revere written, and, I suspect, with the exact same changes.
Note: God knows I’m lucky to have as many friends in my life as I do. Aren’t we all? But for this video I stuck with my MO of only including people who walked the walk or whom I ran into along the way. The song is also for those who live too far away or who for some reason I never asked to join up with me. All apologies on that.

Songs From 2019 (one per artist)
Another mixed bag of stuff i either enjoyed a lot, thought was excellent or interesting (regardless of taste… sort of), emerging artists to maybe look out for, and generally music that for whatever reason connected with me in some way, including the odd earworm i just couldn’t shake. Some artists are left off just to vary a little more from some other popular lists. Hope you enjoy some of this too and find something new to be taken by. Please do buy their music if you can and hopefully from a local independent record store if possible to support their work. There’s a spotify playlist (below) for easier listening but I’ve also posted a few links to extra things on some of them if you want to check them out.  Spotify:
(As ever…. as i don’t tumblr or blog or anything (besides this list), this won’t be seen by many (if any?) people so if you like it or think it’s of any worth in any way, please do share this along)

WordPress 5.4 “Adderley”
Tumblr media
Here it is! Named “Adderley” in honor of Nat Adderley, the latest and greatest version of WordPress is available for download or update in your dashboard.
Tumblr media
Say hello to more and better.
More ways to make your pages come alive. With easier ways to get it all done and looking better than ever—and boosts in speed you can feel.
Welcome to WordPress 5.4
Every major release adds more to the block editor.
More ways to make posts and pages come alive with your best images. More ways to bring your visitors in, and keep them engaged, with the richness of embedded media from the web’s top services.
More ways to make your vision real, and put blocks in the perfect place—even if a particular kind of block is new to you. More efficient processes.
And more speed everywhere, so as you build sections or galleries, or just type in a line of prose, you can feel how much faster your work flows.
Tumblr media
Two new blocks. And better blocks overall.
Two brand-new blocks: Social Icons and Buttons make adding interactive features fast and easy.
New ways with color: Gradients in the Buttons and Cover block, toolbar access to color options in Rich Text blocks, and for the first time, color options in the Group and Columns blocks.
Guess a whole lot less! Version 5.4 streamlines the whole process for placing and replacing multimedia in every block. Now it works the same way in almost every block!
And if you’ve ever thought your image in the Media+Text block should link to something else—perhaps a picture of a brochure should download that brochure as a document? Well, now it can.
Cleaner UI, clearer navigation—and easier tabbing!
Clearer block navigation with block breadcrumbs. And easier selection once you get there.
For when you need to navigate with the keyboard, better tabbing and focus. Plus, you can tab over to the sidebar of nearly any block.
Speed! 14% faster loading of the editor, 51% faster time-to-type!
Tips are gone. In their place, a Welcome Guide window you can bring up when you need it—and only when you need it—again and again.
Know at a glance whether you’re in a block’s Edit or Navigation mode. Or, if you have restricted vision, your screen reader will tell you which mode you’re in.
Of course, if you want to work with the very latest tools and features, install the Gutenberg plugin. You’ll get to be the first to use new and exciting features in the block editor before anyone else has seen them!
Tumblr media
Your fundamental right: privacy
5.4 helps with a variety of privacy issues around the world. So when users and stakeholders ask about regulatory compliance, or how your team handles user data, the answers should be a lot easier to get right.
Take a look:
Now personal data exports include users session information and users location data from the community events widget. Plus, a table of contents!
See progress as you process export and erasure requests through the privacy tools.
Plus, little enhancements throughout give the privacy tools a little cleaner look. Your eyes will thank you!
Tumblr media
Just for developers
Add custom fields to menu items—natively
Two new actions let you add custom fields to menu items—without a plugin and without writing custom walkers.
On the Menus admin screen, wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields fires just before the move buttons of a nav menu item in the menu editor.
In the Customizer, wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields_customize_template fires at the end of the menu-items form-fields template.
Check your code and see where these new actions can replace your custom code, and if you’re concerned about duplication, add a check for the WordPress version.
Blocks! Simpler styling, new APIs and embeds
Radically simpler block styling. Negative margins and default padding are gone! Now you can style blocks the way you need them. And, a refactor got rid of four redundant wrapper divs.
If you build plugins, now you can register collections of your blocks by namespace across categories—a great way to get more brand visibility.
Let users do more with two new APIs: block variations and gradients.
In embeds, now the block editor supports TikTok—and CollegeHumor is gone.
There’s lots more for developers to love in WordPress 5.4. To discover more and learn how to make these changes shine on your sites, themes, plugins and more, check the WordPress 5.4 Field Guide.
The Squad
This release was led by Matt Mullenweg, Francesca Marano, and David Baumwald. They were enthusiastically supported by a release squad:

Good Grief: The Music of 2016
Tumblr media
LINK TO THE MIXES:
https://open.spotify.com/user/abarhamand/playlist/44RLEiy6mjUOJ3pwoQgvqK
This was a tough year. Between the election and all of our heroes dying, hope was in limited supply.
And then in December, I started my annual tradition, 12 years running, of compiling my favorite music of the year into a set of mixes. Since then, I have been reinvigorated by the joy of music, finding retreat from relentless news headlines and social media updates in my headphones. It sounds silly given how meager the thing is, but I truly hope this playlist brings you some small bit of happiness in 2017.
As usual, each mix covers a genre or two to help make it actually listenable. This year, there are four: 1. Rock/Indie-Rock; 2. Country/Folk/Americana; 3. Pop/Rap/R&B; 4. Electronic/Dance.
For the past few years, I’ve combined all the mixes into one Spotify playlist. So read on to see where the “breaks” are if you want to jump to a specific mix.
Thank you for listening, and thanks to my brother for the cover photo. His work can be viewed here.
Happy listening,
Adam

New top story from Time: We Watched Every New Show on Quibi. Here’s What to Watch—and What to Skip
Like it or not, Quibi is here. The new streaming platform, launching April 6, offers short-form content—”quick bites,” hence the portmanteau, that run 10 minutes or less. These shows are designed to be watched exclusively on your phone, whether you’re on the subway heading to work or sitting in the waiting room at the dentist’s office—places, in other words, that most people won’t be able to go for some time yet in the era of social distancing. But despite the fact that very few people are, for the moment, on the go, Quibi has held fast to its planned debut, launching, by our count, 50 scripted series, documentaries, reality shows and news programs on April 6 with plans to roll out 175 shows over the course of the year.
Quibi is casting a wide net to court various types of viewers: there are soothing cooking shows designed for the boomer crowd, while celebrity-studded reality series aim to lure Gen Z off of TikTok. Television critics have been busy debating whether the Quibi model signals the end of quality television or the wave of the future. But it’s clear the platform is hoping sheer star power alone will entice some quarantined television lovers to download the app. Jennifer Lopez, Idris Elba, Lebron James, Chance the Rapper and Chrissy Teigen are among the celebrities set to star in Quibi content, and filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Catherine Hardwicke, Paul Feig, and Guillermo del Toro have content on the upcoming slate.
The streaming service, which also features proprietary new technology that allows viewers to switch seamlessly from landscape to portrait viewing, will cost $4.99 per month with ads and $7.99 without ads, though a 90-day free trial is available if you sign up in April.
Quibi gave journalists a glimpse at some of their content launching on April 6. We watched everything available to screen in advance (in most cases, around three chapters; “Daily Essentials” like news shows were not available in advance as they will cover news as it breaks). If you’re thinking of subscribing, here’s what you should watch and what you should skip.
What to Watch
Gayme Show! (unscripted)
youtube
Gayme Show! has a deceptively simple premise: it’s a gay game show. That’s it! Hosted with with aplomb by comedians Matt Rogers and Dave Mizzoni, each episode features two straight contestants competing in gay-themed challenges in an effort to be crowned “Queen of the Straights.” The jokes are plentiful, and if you’re not well-versed in gay Twitter—references to Dua Lipa, Laura Dern’s salmon button-down from Jurassic Park and Cynthia Nixon’s wife whiz by—you might have to Google to catch up. But even if you don’t get every joke, it’s hard not to let out a guffaw watching contestants like Demi Adejuyigbe prance around the stage in a unitard during a game called “notice me father”—actually a bespectacled Rogers softly weeping. The conceit is goofy, silly and exactly what you want it to be—and that’s a great thing. —Kelly Conniff
Nightgowns (documentary)
youtube
Lately it seems like everyone who’s ever come within 10 feet of RuPaul’s stage is getting their own show, but don’t hold the deluge of drag content against Sasha Velour, a Drag Race winner who stands out even from that talented pack. While her gender-fluid performances can be transgressive, Velour, who takes a big-tent approach to drag, has a heart of gold. As she adapts her Brooklyn-born revue NightGowns for a bigger stage, this docuseries profiles the queen and an inclusive troupe that features performers with a wide range of identities and styles. Each episode of the show—the only Quibi title I screened that feels particularly suited to the medium—ends with a beautifully shot production number that does Velour proud. —Judy Berman
Prodigy (documentary)
youtube
You don’t have to be a sports fan to appreciate this docuseries, which covers a different young elite athlete in each episode. With artful cinematography and well-paced storytelling—especially compared to the frenetic quality of many of the platform’s other shows—Prodigy is less concerned with the specific athletic achievements of its subjects (no. 1 ranked high school basketball player in the U.S., five-time national junior boxing champion) and more focused on the sacrifice and singular dedication of these athletes’ family members. If you cried during that Procter & Gamble Olympics commercial thanking the moms who drove carpools and gave pep talks so that their children could get a shot at the podium, this one is probably for you. —Eliza Berman
Punk’d (unscripted)
youtube
This third revival of MTV’s prank show has been winningly updated for millennial and Gen Z sensibilities: it’s slightly more absurdist, slightly less cruel and involves way more animals. YouTuber Liza Koshy ruins a bat mitzvah; rapper Megan Thee Stallion gets attacked by a gorilla. Chance the Rapper—who in the wake of Netflix’s Rhythm & Flow, has rebranded his once-innocent persona to include a mean streak—brings a mischievous energy to hosting duties, and his laugh is infectious. —Andrew R. Chow
The Sauce (unscripted)
youtube
Dance—particularly street dance—doesn’t get enough mainstream respect. The Sauce has something to say about that. Each episode pits two dance groups against each other, judged by talented dance duo Ayo and Teo, with the lure of a $25,000 cash prize. The lack of polish is endearing, as is the raw skill on display; you’ll wish you could spend more time just watching these young athletes move their bodies in ways that have no respect for the laws of physics. Kudos to executive producer Usher and the hosts for making sure to explain regional dance styles, as it’s high time these art forms got their due. Constant camera cuts and stylized editing seem best suited for the TikTok generation, but it’s a joy to watch these dancers in motion in any format. —Raisa Bruner
Shape of Pasta (documentary)
youtube
Now this is my sort of short content. I’m a devoted Bon Appetit Test Kitchen subscriber, Alison Roman Instagram story watcher and Anthony Bourdain worshipper. So, yes, a show about a chef traveling across tiny towns in Italy to discover forgotten pasta shapes is my jam. I can’t get my head around the tone of this show—it’s extremely self-serious, so much so that it’s maybe supposed to be making fun of other food shows? Or perhaps it’s just one of them. No matter. The show has many nonnas teaching Felix Trattoria chef Even Funke how to make pasta in shapes you’ve never thought of but are centuries-old traditions in picturesque Italian towns. It’s delightful! —Eliana Dockterman
You Ain’t Got These (documentary)
youtube
Lena Waithe takes viewers on a thoughtful, well-researched and star-studded tour of the world of sneakers. As the show conveys, sneaker culture is about much more than style. “Your footwear is your ID now in the black community,” Carmelo Anthony tells her; Nas, Run DMC, Hasan Minhaj and a cultural historian reflect on the legacy of icons like Michael Jordan and the relationship between hip-hop and commerce. Questions about branding, exploitation and value are tackled head-on. For sneakerheads it might be mostly recap, but it’s still fun to hear Rev Run reminisce about securing his Adidas deal—and for everyone else, it works as a solid introduction to a foundational part of contemporary American culture. —Raisa Bruner
What to Try
Chrissy’s Court (unscripted)
youtube
In this ode to Judge Judy, Chrissy Teigen rules over petty cases brought by local randos. Each episode is extremely dependent on the personalities of the plaintiff and defendant. Most of the “contestants” are actively awkward (or actually mad, which is bizarre given the TV show’s unserious premise), and Chrissy and her mother Vilailuck Teigen (as bailiff) have to work double-time to counteract their discomfort. The humor often feels forced. Chrissy’s Instagram is more entertaining—at least there, she has total control over the cast of characters, namely her husband John Legend and their two kids, all of whom are way more natural in front of the camera. That said, if you like Teigen and are already churning through her Instagram stories every day, this is a fine way to get some more. —Eliana Dockterman
Fierce Queens (documentary)
youtube
Reese Witherspoon narrates mini wildlife documentaries made with BBC Studios Natural History Unit, each focused on the female members of a species. Some of the lines veer into cheesy girl-power territory: “Getting that belief in yourself and gaining confidence: that’s what growing up is all about. These big cats totally nailed it. Walk tall, fierce queens!” she sings out after a surface-level episode about adolescent cheetah sisters. But thanks to truly beautiful footage and surprising subject choices—unless you already know all about the life cycle of the ruthless, cannibalistic queen honeypot ant?—viewers who want a quick hit of nature and some new fun facts about animals will be satisfied. —Raisa Bruner
Flipped (scripted)
youtube
After one episode, this one looked like it would fall squarely in the “skip” bucket: two incredibly annoying self-anointed visionaries, a married theater director (Will Forte) and Home Depot-esque associate (Kaitlin Olson), are both deservedly fired from their jobs for asserting their own artistic purity over things like appropriate subject matter for tween thespians (in his case) and customer service (in hers). (Think the kind of kooky, self-serious characters you’d find in a Christopher Guest movie, minus the great ensemble to balance them out.) But a hastily paced sequence of events—they decide to try to be house flippers, buy a foreclosed-upon property and find stacks of cash in its walls, which turn out to belong to a drug cartel—leads to the introduction of Broad City‘s Arturo Castro as an organic-apple-eating overlord, which might just elevate this bonkers ordeal from grating to promising. —Eliza Berman
Gone Mental with Lior (unscripted)
The mentalist Lior Suchard lacks the theatricality or scale of other famous magicians like David Blaine or Criss Angel, making him perhaps the perfect match for a low-stakes platform like Quibi. It’s agreeable enough to watch him catch basketballs while blindfolded or exactly guess the number of coins in Ludacris’ hands, but his tricks won’t haunt your dreams, either. —Andrew R. Chow
I Promise (documentary)
youtube
By all accounts, LeBron James’ I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, has been a resounding success: Its students, who were picked to attend after underachieving in the city’s public school system, are testing better and seem to be thriving in their new environment. This show, however, comes off as a surface-level feel-good advertisement for the school. —Andrew R. Chow
Run This City (documentary)
youtube
Jaseil Correia grew up with the dream of becoming the mayor of his hometown, Fall River, Mass.—a city of around 90,000 most famous as the home of Lizzie Borden. At the remarkably young age of 23, he achieved it. But what sounds at first like an uplifting story of millennial striving turns dissonant when Correia is indicted on fraud and extortion charges. It’s an intriguing story that could have made for a fascinating hourlong documentary. Unfortunately, the Quibi format requires director Brent Hodge (I Am Chris Farley) to chop the saga into equal-sized, eight-minute “bites” that drag in the middle before ramping up to exaggerated cliffhangers. The result is a micro-docuseries whose rhythm always feels a bit off. —Judy Berman
Singled Out (unscripted)
youtube
I like host Keke Palmer. I like Joel Kim Booster, who serves as the Jenny McCarthy to her Chris Hardwick. I like that all three episodes I watched had queer contestants but didn’t feel as though they were pandering to an LGBTQ audience. The best one featured a fully decked-out, super-charismatic drag queen looking for a man who could handle her at her most femme. But the best thing about the original MTV show was the unscripted banter, both between the hosts and among the competitors. And there just isn’t room for that in an already-rushed seven-minute show. —Judy Berman
Thanks A Million (unscripted)
youtube
There’s not much here that you can’t already get from watching YouTube clips of Ellen DeGeneres giving out life-sized checks on behalf of name-that-corporation, or soldiers coming home to reunite with their spouses/children/dogs. But if you’re going to subscribe anyway and want a cathartic cry in two-minutes flat, watching celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Kevin Hart and Nick Jonas give deserving people $100,000, then watching the recipient give half of it to another deserving person, and so on, should do the trick. If you think too hard about it, the magic starts to fade—how much of this will get eaten up in gift taxes, and how many phone calls is this person going to get asking for a loan after receiving such a large sum on, well, if not national TV, whatever Quibi is? Yet seeing an apparently kind, hard-working person get the chance to pay for infertility treatments, or a house, or more resources for their therapy dog program, is far from the worst way to spend six minutes. —Eliza Berman
What to Skip
&Music (documentary)
youtube
With its sweeping landscape shots, ambient background score and pseudo-philosophical ramblings, &Music seems to want to be the Chef’s Table for the random-dudes-connected-to-the-music-industry set. The show spends each episode with a behind-the-scenes collaborator of a star: there’s Ariana Grande’s choreographers and Martin Garrix’s light guy. But while there are one or two poignant and revealing moments, the show is mostly slick, overproduced and vacuous. There are plenty of music documentaries that are far more worth your time—and that you can watch on a big screen with proper speakers. —Andrew R. Chow
Dishmantled (unscripted)
youtube
Dishmantled is a cooking show, minus the main ingredients that make cooking shows so satisfying: interesting and empathetic contestants to root for and, much more fatal to the whole endeavor, the cooking itself. Hosted by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s Tituss Burgess, the show invites two blindfolded chefs into a small chamber where a mystery dish is blasted into their faces; they have to taste the exploded shrapnel, figure out what it might be, and make a dish replicating what they think they’ve eaten, to be judged on both taste and accuracy by celebrity judges like Dan Levy, Antoni Porowski and Jane Krakowski. But the quick format makes this far from a nutritious meal; viewers don’t have time to get to know or get invested in the contestants, and the cooking itself sails by without any attention to technique or ingredients. The most drama you’ll get here are lines like: “This all comes down to…is this a zoodle or is this a noodle?” —Eliza Berman
Memory Hole (unscripted)
Will Arnett makes fun of terrible pop culture moments from history that nobody remembers for a reason (like that time Alan Thicke appeared in a corny tribute at the opening of a Canadian superdome). It’s unclear who this show is for or why it exists. The references are so obscure that even people who lived through them will have forgotten and the quips feel like something you’d hear at a high school open mic. I spent the entire time watching this show thinking about another, much better show, BoJack Horseman. In that Netflix animated series, Arnett voiced a washed-up ’90s sitcom star struggling to stay relevant in Hollywood. Memory Hole feels like a project that an investor in Quibi would have blackmailed BoJack into doing after BoJack accidentally threw up on him during a bender at a wedding. —Eliana Dockterman
Most Dangerous Game (scripted)
youtube
This show is so obvious, it’s almost funny. These are the exact roles SNL would cast Liam Hemsworth and Christoph Waltz in for a skit—cancer-ridden former athlete with a pregnant wife and an evil billionaire who wants to pay said former athlete to be hunted by rich people. Since each episode is seven minutes, these are not character revelations that slowly come out over time. They are blatantly spoken by the actors to one another in every scene. Don’t come to Most Dangerous Game expecting The Game-esque twists or any subtle dialogue. What you expect is exactly what you will get. Unless you expect fun. You won’t get that. —Eliana Dockterman
Murder House Flip (unscripted)
youtube
Despite the name, there’s nothing original about Murder House Flip. The series is essentially two types of reality shows unceremoniously jammed together: one part home redesign show hosted by two perky designers with a surfeit of canned jokes; one part true crime docuseries filled with the requisite pan and scan over vintage photos and newspaper clippings. This uneasy juxtaposition results in awkward episodes that often feel like a Saturday Night Live parody, especially when one of the hosts brightly announces: “Our goal was to take this murder house and turn it into a happy home.” And a focus on the grisly nature of the crimes reflects the worst parts of a genre that too often obscures victims. Is there a world in which this show could have managed to strike the right tone? Possibly. But as it stands, Murder House Flip is too flip. —Kelly Conniff
Nikki Fre$h (unscripted)
youtube
“Wellness has a new voice. A black voice,” Nicole Richie’s rapper alter ego says in the first episode of Nikki Fre$h (and then immediately clarifies that she’s referring to herself). The resulting show is part poker-faced satire of the goop lifestyle and part honest assessment of organic produce and artisanal honey. Her attempts to draw attention to food waste and the plight of bees are well-intentioned, but cameos from the likes of Bill Nye can’t save the show from falling flat; Richie helped pioneer awkward reality TV on The Simple Life with Paris Hilton, but Nikki Fre$h lacks that show’s schadenfreude appeal. —Raisa Bruner
Skrrt with Offset (unscripted)
youtube
If you like looking at nice cars, you might get a kick out of Skrrt with Offset. Otherwise, there’s not much point. The show has a thin premise (the Migos rapper Offset does stuff with cars) and is executed with even less imagination. When his wife Cardi B shows up for an episode, overflowing with sass and charisma, you wonder why they didn’t just give the whole show to her. —Andrew R. Chow
Survive (scripted)
youtube
Before watching the first five episodes of this thriller about a disturbed young woman preparing to kill herself on the flight home from a mental institution, I might have said something like, “I’d watch Sophie Turner do anything.” Well, Turner is great in Survive—but neither her performance nor the impressive production values manage to redeem a story that, whether intentionally or not, revels in the bloody, nihilistic aesthetics of suicide. A twist (one that’s “spoiled” in the trailer) that has the plane crashing and Turner’s character teaming up with an obvious love interest (Corey Hawkins) to, yes, survive only heightens the absurdity and introduces plot holes. —Judy Berman
When the Streetlights Go On (scripted)
youtube
It’s the summer of 1995—a stiflingly hot one—when things start going wrong in sleepy Colfax, Ill. That fall, a beautiful high-school mean girl (Kristine Froseth) and the teacher she’s been sleeping with (Mark Duplass) get carjacked, forced to strip and gunned down by their masked assailant. The weirdo sister (Sophie Thatcher) she used to bully wanders around unmoored. A jock sometimes-boyfriend (Sam Strike) is brought in for questioning. Narrating this murder mystery is the student journalist (Chosen Jacobs) who found the bodies. Period signifiers like Nirvana and ck one abound. Every once in a while a show formed entirely out of genre tropes and nostalgia for the recent past is executed well enough to exceed the sum of its parts (see: the first season of Stranger Things). But after three trite, predictable episodes, I’m not holding out much hope for this one. —Judy Berman

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 15th December 2019
This is a really easy week for me and I’m not making it anything more than just what we have, which is a simple collection of the top 10, some fallers and drop-outs, too many Christmas songs and one new arrival. Let’s get on with it.
Top 10
For an eleventh and what I’m assuming will be a final week, Tones and I is at #1 with “Dance Monkey”.
Up only one spot and not receiving enough of a boost to overthrow the #1, we have number-two, “Own It” by Stormzy featuring Ed Sheeran and Burna Boy.
Also up a single spot this week is “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa at number-three.
Those two are probably due to the slight fall for Lewis Capaldi’s “Before You Go” down two spots to number-four.
“ROXANNE” by Arizona Zervas is steady at number-five, meaning in the run to the Christmas #1, there are no Christmas songs in the top five...
That didn’t last long. “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey is up two spots to number-six, meaning if there isn’t a surprise release that overtakes any other song like last year, Carey could easily take it this year.
Also a contender is “Last Christmas” by WHAM! re-entering the top 10 at number-seven after a six-spot increase this week.
The Amazon Music exclusive song by Ellie Goulding, “River”, continues to profit off of false success propelled by its exclusivity in a desperate attempt to recoup any chart power, up six spaces to number-eight.
At number-nine, we have “everything i wanted” by Billie Eilish continuing to be mismanaged in some way down three spaces to number-nine. Seriously, this was released way too late to be a genuine success amongst Christmas songs, as has the new arrival this week, but somehow this one has some sense of longevity.
Memories by maroon 5 poopoo stinky poop
Climbers
Much like last week, there aren’t any climbers worth mentioning other than for the Christmas songs... except for these two: “Falling” by Trevor Daniel is up five spaces from its debut last week to #35 and somehow, “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi has rebounded seven spaces up to #27... curious happenings here on the UK Top 40.
Edit: “Don’t Rush” by Young T & Bugsey featuring Headie One is also up seven to #30
Fallers
Okay, so the Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and “Heartless” are both in freefall off of their debuts last week, down five and 12 respectively to #17 and #22. Otherwise, “Lose You to Love Me” by Selena Gomez is down six spaces to #21, “This is Real” by Jax Jones featuring Ella Henderson has had the same hit down to #26, “Professor X” by Dave is down 13 spots to #40 and... KSI’s “Down Like That” (featuring Rick Ross, Lil Baby and S-X) took a big 20-space hit to #37. I bet he’s suddenly wishing he didn’t win that boxing match this particular month.
Dropouts
Like all Christmas weeks, it’s pretty much as far as we get on this chart to a bloodbath. I’m not even going to go in order, it’s pretty disastrous but somewhat understated, even if these songs are all either big hits or prematurely dropped off. “Ride It” by Regard featuring Jay Sean is out from #31, “Must Be” by J Hus is out from #28, “New Dior” by DigDat and D-Block Europe is out from #35, “Turn Me On” by Riton, Oliver Heldens and Vula is out from #25, “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM” by Travis Scott is out from #30, and finally, “Nice to Meet Ya” by Niall Horan is out from #38.
IT’S CHRISTMAS INNIT
Okay, so our gains outside of the two (or three) in the top 10: “Fairytale of New York” by the Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl is up eight to #14 – that’s good, “Do They Know it’s Christmas?” by Band Aid is up eight to #15 – that’s not, “Merry Christmas Everyone” by Shakin’ Stevens is up 10 to #16, “Step into Christmas” by Elton John has the greatest gain up 15 to #24, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Michael Bublé is up seven to #25, “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande is up two to #31, and if you count it, “Into the Unknown” by Idina Menzel and AURORA from the Frozen II soundtrack is down two to #38.
In terms of returning entries, “One More Sleep” by Leona Lewis is back at #29, as is “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee at #32, as well as “I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday” by Wizzard at #34, “Merry Xmas Everybody” by Slade at #37, as well as a certain entry I don’t think I’ve talked about yet...
#39 – “Underneath the Tree” – Kelly Clarkson
Produced by Greg Kurstin – Peaked at #24 in Scotland and #44 in the US
In 2013, Kelly Clarkson released a Christmas album and this was the big lead single... and it fared okay for what it was, peaking at #30 after initial release. Every couple years, we add an extra one or two songs to the Christmas canon – not necessarily new songs, but songs that hadn’t reached the UK Top 40 as part of its annual festive explosion until the year they re-entered at their highest yet, and I am glad to have this one adopted as part of the canon because, well, there’s a reason this is being compared to Mariah Carey’s all-time classic. This is a great song and really has all the elements of your favourite Christmas classics and carols: it’s got distorted Phil Spector drums, bombastic horn lines and a fantastic pop songstress, rivalling the likes of Darlene Love, carrying the whole thing like a sleigh ride. This is just pure joy in all the maximalist, commercialist merriment you can find out of holiday music. There are elements of doo-wop here, especially with the rhythm in the verses and her back-and-forth with the backing choir vocalists. It’s really nothing special and it plays everything about Christmas about as straight as possible, but it’s also got an epic sax solo and sweet, soaring strings, and is overall a great attempt at cementing Kelly Clarkson in pop history, as all Christmas songs are, really. Still disappointed “Christmas Lights” by Coldplay has yet to be added into the canon though.
NEW ARRIVALS
#11 – “Adore You” – Harry Styles
Produced by – Peaked at #7 in Australia and #24 in the US
I didn’t like Fine Line at all, it was boring and it was a nearly 50-minute slog, full of vague, half-hearted impressions that not even Harry seemed invested in, with gross, blocky production and songwriting that I honestly often found aimless and awkward... and I listen to Weezer, so that’s really something coming from me. This song, and consequentially, Styles’ fourth UK Top 40 hit, is one of the best songs on that album, although my complaints still definitely ring true. Despite a viral marketing campaign, this song really isn’t all that interesting, despite a rocking groove that it definitely brings to the table with an admittedly very nice bassline... except it’s not full enough to make the verses feel finished, instead filling in blank space with echos and an abrupt pre-chorus. Harry sounds a lot better here, if just for the fact that I find his voice kind of amusing, especially when he goes on those pitch-shifted falsetto runs in the chorus. The guitars are pretty chill and laidback, and overall, it’s a pretty nice soft-rock tune that’s actually pretty danceable, and I really love the keys in the post-chorus... speaking of that post-chorus and/or bridge, the guitar solo is awesome, and propelled by Styles’ backing vocals, it reaches a great climax, even if the kick drums end up clipping in the mix immediately afterwards. It’s pretty cool, but I have little other opinion on this otherwise. It reminds me somewhat of “Instant Crush” by Daft Punk, but far from as good.
Conclusion
...Well, Best and Worst of the Week go to Harry Styles by default. Follow me on Twitter @cactusinthebank – it’s the big one next week.
