I do really love the whole, like, anti-coming of age story ending for Alice, though.
(...spoilers)
1. A somewhat aimless protagonist, not driven by much but youthful ennui and wanderlust, joins on a dangerous and incredible voyage 2. After going through hell, she is offered a clear and definite choice-spend eternity wandering from place to place, seeing all the wonders of creation. At the cost of casting aside her humanity, abandoning all those who know or care about her, tearing all evidence of her existence from their memories and lives and leaving gaping holes in their place. 3. Takes a moment to consider it, feels bad enough to write a letter to apologize, and then says ‘Deal’.
I don’t know, I’m just contrarian enough to reflexively like a story that ends with the heroine going “Yeah, fuck the power of friendship, and love, and finding a place you belong, having a fulfilling normal life, and all the relationships that makes me human. I’m going to be an immortal alien adventurer/tourist seeing the universe’s most amazingly terrifying shit up until I run into something that kills me.”
