The Oudezijdsvoorburgwal, often abbreviated to OZ Voorburgwal, is a street and canal in the Red Light District in the center of Amsterdam . The OZ Voorburgwal runs from the Grimburgwal in the south to the Sea Wall in the north, where he becomes the Oudezijds Kolk , Load on the IJ . The OZ Voorburgwal is rich in contrasts. On the one hand it is one of the most famous streets of the Red Light District, full of sex shops, window prostitutes, peep shows , brothels , bars and coffee shops ( The Bulldog is here even more affiliates and a hotel ). On the other hand, it is full of monumental canal houses from the Golden Age and the remains of the many monasteries here in the Middle Ages were. In the 17th and 18th century canal usually called the Velvet Burgwal. The bridge over the OZ Voorburgwal between Damstraat and Old Doelstraat is a clear dividing line between the northern Wall Part noisy and the quiet southern part. Originally the OZ Voorburgwal was a creek which was further excavated a canal to the eastern part of the city, the old side. For 1385 shared the Amstel Amsterdam city into two almost equal parts, the old side of the Old Church and the new side with the New Church . To protect the city was one on each side behind a moat ramparts, an earthen rampart , with a wooden palisade to foreclosure. Then behind these walls around 1385 new walls were built, the existing Voorburgwal the shore and the new shore Achterburgwal, both the old and the new side. Thus arose the Oudezijdsvoorburgwal, Oudezijdsachterburgwal , Nieuwezijdsvoorburgwal and Nieuwezijds Achterburgwal (now Spuistraat ). In the construction of the buildings on the Oudezijdsvoorburgwal were moat gardens built behind the mansions. Today they are almost all gone.

Dichter op de Zeedijk

De Zeedijk had in de jaren zestig een niet zo’n hele goede reputatie. Veel alcoholisten, drugsdealers en hoeren voelden zich op thuis op de Zeedijk. De Zeedijk was dus niet zo heel populair bij mensen om te wonen. Je zou niet verwachten dat een kind uren lang op de Zeedijk zou gaan rondhangen. Want is de Zeedijk niet een te gevaarlijke straat voor een kind?

De hoofdpersonage lijdt een interessant leventje.

Constant is een stille en dromerige jongen. Constant is niet een persoon die snel vrienden maakt. Maar een stil persoon kan alsnog een interessant leventje lijden. Omdat hij niet veel vrienden van zijn eigen leeftijd heeft, fantaseert hij vaak dat hij onzichtbaar is of dat er een bekende dichter hem bezoekt. Zijn fantasiewereld maakt zijn leven een stuk interessanter. Soms lijkt het wel alsof die fantasiewereld de echte wereld is. Je kunt je echt inleven in Constant, omdat hij in zijn fantasiewereld gebeurtenissen meemaakt die hij niet zou meemaken in de echte wereld. Zoals praten met een dichter die al in de zeventiende eeuw is gestorven. Omdat Constant over allerlei dingen fantaseert, lijkt de Zeedijk niet zo’n hele gevaarlijke straat voor een kind. 

De schrijfstijl is gelukkig niet zoals andere boeken.

Dit boek heeft een schrijfstijl die in de hij-vorm staat. De hoofdpersoon word door de verteller hij genoemd. Het is niet zoals andere semi-autobiografische boeken, want die worden meestal in de ik-vorm vertelt. Alle kleine verhalen zorgen ervoor dat het één boek word. Je ziet dat er allemaal gebeurtenissen worden vertelt over het leven van Constant, maar het voelt niet alsof die gebeurtenissen niet bij elkaar horen. Dat zorgt er gelukkig voor dat het één boek is. Het verhaal is heel nauwkeurig geschreven zo kun je makkelijker begrijpen waarover Constant fantaseert. En het is zo nauwkeurig geschreven dat je de zeedijk al helemaal voor je ziet liggen. Er wordt heel goed beschreven hoe de Zeedijk er vanaf zijn vaste hangplaats er uit ziet. ‘’… aan de andere kant van de brug, waar de Oudezijds Voorburgwal veranderde in de Oudezijds Kolk; met rechts langs het water een smal stukje straat waar winkeltjes en werkplaatsen waren gevestigd…’’.

Jammer dat er niet veel wordt vertelt over het leven van Constant op school.

Constant is een kind en gaat natuurlijk naar school. Maar veel wordt er niet vertelt over zijn schoolleven. Ik vind dit persoonlijk jammer, omdat je toch wilt weten hoe het er op school aan toegaat. Heeft hij wel vrienden op school? Of word hij daar gepest? Het zijn vragen die je graag beantwoord wil hebben. Dat maakt het boek dus ook zo goed, je bent heel erg nieuwsgierig over wat hij meemaakt. Maar het blijft alsnog jammer dat we geen kijkje krijgen in zijn schoolleven.

Dit is een boek met een interessante hoofdpersonage en een aparte schrijfstijl. Maar het is wel jammer dat er over zijn schoolleven niet veel wordt vertelt. Doordat Constant over allerlei dingen fantaseert, wordt zijn personage Constant veel interessanter. Door de nauwkeurige schrijfstijl zie je wat hij zich verbeeld. En begrijp je makkelijker waar Constant over fantaseert. Dus als je van een boek houdt met een interessante hoofdpersonage en met een aparte schrijfstijl is dit zeker een aanrader!
