WIP Wednesday: GUESS WHAT
It's Wednesday, my students are in the midst of finals, and I get to work from home during a rainstorm. None of these things are related but these things mean things are happening and I'm taking a certain fic off hiatus to update it (hopefully soon, oh my God, please spare me from the Writer's Curse)
Anywaysssss...
She's baaaaaaaaaaackkkkk
If you would like to be tagged in updates, please check out my (new and improved) taglist and sign up! I have also created an archive where just my fics and drabbles will be reblogged (and tagged), over at @punemys-library. It's a little under construction, but we're working on it.
Content Warnings for this Snippet: Gun mention, bullet mention, smoking mention, reference to funerals and gravesites,
Senator Andy Barber’s Chief of Staff keeps a loaded gun in the glove compartment of every car he drives, a force of habit the Senator is probably grateful for right about new, even in absentia. While he pays for the final tank of gas he’ll need to get you both to where you need to go, you open it up and empty the clip, leave the bullets in the cup-holder save for the two you put back. He doesn’t bother questioning the sight of them when he returns, just glances at you briefly and hands you a cup of water, burnt coffee you immediately regret taking a sip of.
You finish it before the car’s back on the highway.
The road ahead is a lonely one, just your car’s headlights there to cut through the snowy gloom, William Russo the only driver half-insane enough to be driving through this particular stretch of the Appalachian trail this late at night with a snowstorm raging all around the both of you.
You never picked up smoking as a habit, really, — too devout then, too late now — but as the suffocating silence settles in alongside the cold in your bones, you can’t help but crave one. Just one, just something to quest the churning anxiety and growing dread in your belly.
You risk a glance to Billy, the pale white of his knuckles deepening as his grip on the wheel shifts, eyes catching yours when he feels the weight of your gaze on him, You getting tired?
Are you?
Exhaustion feels too far away, adrenaline still holding your eyes open, anxious twitches keeping your muscles uncomfortable in the passenger seat, unable to settle down. Even the shake of your head is too cautious to be definitive, watching, waiting. Say nothing.
Not long now, he tells you by way of an attempt at comfort, eyes back on the road, Safe house in a few hours.
Alaska.
Not the state — though you wouldn’t mind, all things considered. The house you pull up to is… nice, if made gloomy in snowy isolation. You almost wonder how a Senator’s newly-hired Chief of Staff even manages to have an isolated “safe house” just on the edge of the US-Canada border, with access to what seemed like a completely unmanned and unlicensed border crossing — and then you decide that question isn’t even top fifty on your list of questions you’ve had about your day.
Days, even. Days full of memories of caskets and graveside services turning into grave danger reminding you why you’re here, pulling up to a wood-and-brick prison rather than your palace of glass and steal.
Domain. Dungeon.
The snow outside is starting to turn into a full-bore blizzard, but the house itself is warm enough to boil your blood, fire crackling in the hearth and Billy handing you a mug of something warm and medically cleared for your consumption, I just got the news — he’s awake, he tells you, taking a seat on the armchair across from you with a glass of whiskey in hand, He’ll want to hear from you, make sure you’re safe.
Safe. The word feels all wrong, especially here. Especially now.
You are not safe, you are not safe, he will find you he will always find you.

Fic masterpost!
I figured it would be good to stick all of them in here heh. One spot and pin it, links to the first chapters of each one. Reminder though you can't read them without an account, I'm sorry but I want to at least try and preserve my work... These are also all explicit, for various reasons, like my blog these are all 18+ ONLY. (Also most are pretty angsty)
Space is kinda scary though- : Roughly among us inspired multi-universe reverse harem in space.
Abyssal Lights : Siren reader and multi-universe marine researcher skeletons. (Machine in the basement type)
Smoke and Mirrors : Megalosomnia mafiafell world where reader is a rival don.
Guardians of Eden : Childhood friends with the dreamtale boys into eventual romance in adulthood.
The Price You Pay : Fae reader and the farmfell brothers living on the edge of the fae's forest.
The Bonds That Break : An 'Inverto' style au where the barrier breaking releases magic that turns many humans with magic bloodlines into a monster form. Massive multi-universe reverse harem and sort of anti-harem.

To my friends who go to C2E2, don’t waste your hard earned money for a photo op to meet your heroes because you don’t even really meet them. Sure, you say hi, they say hi, and then your photo is over within a minute or so, and then they push you out so the next group could come in to meet them. $300 (this was a group photo) for what? A glossy photo that might not even look right? For a split second to see those people you looked up to since you were a teenager and can barely get two words out and you barely remember their faces other than the photo you took? That’s no way to meet your heroes. That’s not really meeting them. You just get a split second of bragging rights. Maybe the autograph line is better for this - maybe you get a longer interaction. I’m not really sure. Just don’t waste that amount for just a photo that you wonder later down the line, “Was it really worth it?”

I stopped at some point during my walk to look at the sky then heard a soft pensive sound and looked down and realised a small friend was contemplating along with me
I said hello and she trotted over to greet me with her cheerful little bell and she was simply the most affable creature I've ever met.
I hope her supportive smile brightens your day as well !

Rhaegar Targaryen is easily one of GRRM’s best deconstructions of the genre and we don’t talk about it enough. He’s prince living in a world full of magic and wonder that has dwindled over time. His own family had a great monopoly on one of the most magical phenomena (dragons) to ever exist, but they lost this control over time and it was due to their own faults. But there’s an all encompassing hope that this magic, these dragons, will come back. They all live within the promise that it will all be back and with a huge bang. It’s all so romantic. Magical forces of ice and fire battling it out in a song.
Then there’s Rhaegar, a prince born for the sole purpose of being this song’s romantic hero. He already has his destiny mapped out and it will be a great one, greater than any other man who ever lived. It’s a song of ice and fire, and Rhaegar is its bard. You’d expect this to give him joy. Yet by all accounts, he was depressed as fuck. I think he’s unfairly earned the reputation of having an ego so big to think that he will be the hero….but that’s quite literally the point of his existence. He was born to be the hero. He paid the price at birth to be the hero. How can he revel and glory in this destiny when he has no say in it?
So it’s genuinely funny that when given the chance, Rhaegar immediately pivots to someone else taking on this burden. But how tragic for him that he cannot escape it too far. Because it will be none other than his own son who, under a “bleeding star”, is marked at conception for this great destiny without a say. More than his ego, Rhaegar is marked by the inability to escape this duty. His whole life is dedicated to fulfilling a duty he can never escape. He isn’t just a future king, prophecy dictates that the world’s survival is placed squarely on his shoulders. Even when he isn’t the hero, he’s now responsible for raising him…
…but then he makes one decision and it all comes crumbling like a pack of biscuits. He escapes this burden…but dies. And his successor dies too. And now the ones who will inherit his legacy are two people who never knew him. They never knew of his burdens, of this prophecy. But they too cannot escape its jaws. I think this does bring up some interesting questions about the nature of fate and destiny in the world of ice and fire. Can you really escape it? Rhaegar tried to, and paid the price for his defiance, but he never truly made it out because the burden instead jumped to the son (and sister) he never knew. Funny thing is that in a bizarre (and tragic, in its own way) twist of fate, this son was brought up entirely without the trappings of power that depressed Rhaegar. Rhaegar was a dazzling prince, Jon is a bastard. Rhaegar was marked by his great inheritance, Jon is marked by the lack thereof. Does fate say “well the first one got too depressed by having too much so let’s give the next one nothing?” Even Dany, who grows up a princess does not have the privileges that Rhaegar did. So how does upbringing craft a hero and the choices they make? Welll, GRRM had given us two versions of Rhaegar’s tragedy in Jon and Dany for us to see.
Rhaegar’s impact on the meta-narrative is honestly so massive. Like I’d put him right up there with Quentyn, Sansa, and Bran as one of the best genre deconstructions in the series and no one can tell me otherwise.

quick reminder that besides calling for a ceasefire from your political representatives, you can also tangibly help Palestinians get back online by buying them e-sims!!!
Here’s a full step process on how:
Go to Nomad (http://getnomad.app), click on the menu in the top right-hand side, and click on Shop Plans then Data.
--
2. After clicking on Data, scroll aaallll the way down. The Middle East plan is at the very bottom of the list of data plans.
--
3. After choosing the Middle East plan, choose how much you want to pay, then enter your card details etc and acknowledge everything.
You can get a $3 discount on this, by using the code "BACKPACKNOMAD" on Nomad.
--
4.Ignore the next part. You don't want to install anything. You're waiting for an email with a QR code for activation.
--
5) Screenshot the QR code and send it to someone in Gaza! How do you do that? You can now email your e-sim QR code screenshots to
[email protected] who will then distribute them to Palestinians.
--
Stay safe, stay vigilant and continue to believe in the possibility of Palestinian freedom!
