A visual feast brought in on a miniscule $80 million budget, The Creator is sure to be deep in the mix when the technical awards are handed out in the run up to (and including) the 2024 Oscars, as well as delivering some stellar performances. Despite having every tool in its arsenal to deliver a financial blockbuster, the film never quite ignited the box office as hoped, but despite that has now moved past the $100 million global box office mark thanks in part to ILM's mind-blowing work and design, which should have seen it gather so much more. [gallery link="file" columns="4" size="large" ids="150563,150562,150561,150560"] The Creator under-performed in its opening weekend, and was never quite able to recover. It has made only $40 million domestically over the course of its run, and a little over $60 million from overseas territories, for a running global haul of $101 million. The film was produced on a reported budget of $80 million, which was seen as an achievement considering its vast visual effects requirements, but ultimately proved to be too high a number for an original movie without a bankable star in the lead. What also probably hurt the film were the lukewarm reviews that it opened to despite the positive online buzz around Edwards’ near-guerilla filmmaking approach, and the inability of its cast to promote it because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. The film sits at a borderline “fresh” 66% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt calling it “neither a masterpiece nor a complete misfire” in her review. The Creator was released at a time when the conversation around the sinister potential of artificial intelligence was at its peak, but the film’s pressing themes weren’t able to capture the imagination of audiences. The Creator arrives on digital platforms on 14th November, and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on 12th December ahead of arriving on Disney Plus. [amazon box="B0C7P7X635"]

The Creator (2023) sci-fi movie trailer

20th Century Studios has released the trailer for The Creator, the new film from director Gareth Edwards. The 20th Century Studios' upcoming feature The Creator, AI takes on an even more dangerous form: technology fully capable of waging war against humanity. So, it's up to one man (John David Washington), to find the mind behind the AI. Ahead of the film's release on September 29, 20th Century Studios released the first teaser trailer. The trailer for Gareth Edwards’ new film shows humanity being outsmarted by AI – and is released just as our overlords-to-be are rearing their terrifying heads The trailer opens on a vast area surrounded by water and futuristic type buildings. A young child asks Washington's character, Joshua, about heaven, and whether Joshua will ever go there. His answer, "it's a peaceful place in the sky," is starkly contrasted by a raging war, complete with explosions, gunfire, and an intense rendition of Aerosmith's "Dream On." As the trailer continues, it reveals humanity has been at war with the AI for a decade, and there are no indicators of it slowing down. Eventually, though, Joshua pins down an important weapon, sending him into a crisis of conscience. Despite said weapon being AI, it seems the movie will also beg the question of just how capable AI is of humanity -- and whether it should be destroyed. The film was written, directed, and produced by Gareth Edwards, who devised the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Weitz. Edwards produced alongside Kiri Hart, Jim Spencer, and Arnon Milchan. Executive producers include Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Natalie Lehmann, Nick Meyer, and Zev Foreman. Alongside Washington and Chan, the film stars Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney, and newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles. Read the full article

As we head towards the Academy Awards and - hopefully - an Oscar coming the way of ILM (4 of the 5 nominated films are from ILM with Godzilla: Minus One being ther fifth), the one film which would appear to lead the pack is The Creator. With a number of incredible advancements and a director who is very aware of the industry behind the magic, Lucasfilm caught up with Gareth Edwards to look at the film and its non-traditional methods and also with ILM Visual Effects Supervisor Jay Cooper. https://youtu.be/2LBm3NU1S6U?si=rJQjrsKLsojMyiR2 Gareth also sat down with Collider to discuss the film in their latest FYC screening series with Landmark Theatres. Collider had the opportunity to spend an evening with Gareth Edwards to learn how Edwards and his crew created an Oscar-worthy sci-fi without breaking the bank. Find out how he worked alongside Industrial Light & Magic and his editing team to film all over the globe efficiently, creating scenes in days that could often take weeks. We learn his methods for saving on expensive film equipment, how to shoot stunning shots on an iPhone, and why these Academy Award nominations are extra special for the cast and crew of The Creator. Gareth also joined the team from Corridor Crew in a great fun episode to break down the VFX of the film and the amazing work ILM did. https://youtu.be/lWjayZ3U4TQ?si=6jjPC2LJZOQYpI92 Sam and Wren are joined by Director Gareth Edwards to break down his most recent blockbuster film, The Creator, which is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects!
