The earth has seasons because of the tilt it has on its axis.

As we are approaching the Winter Solstice, it will be officially winter in the southern hemisphere of earth.

The diagram above is for the Northern Hemisphere. The winter and the summer solstice are reversed for the southern hemisphere.
