THEODORE ROOSEVELT
THEODORE ROOSEVELT
1858-1919
President of the USA / Teddy Bears named after him
Roosevelt Jr was born in Manhattan New York City, the child of socialite Martha Stewart and Roosevelt Sr. His cousin was the father of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt grew up with poor health and suffered from asthma. He had a lifelong interest in zoology and kept a makeshift museum with animals that he killed or caught as a child. It was his father who influenced him, he was a leader in NY’s cultural affairs and was active for the Union during the Civil War. Roosevelt travelled to Europe and Egypt and enjoyed the outdoors and exercising. He was aged 6 when he witnessed the funeral procession of Abraham Lincoln from his grandfather’s mansion in NYC.
Roosevelt was home-schooled and attended college and then entered politics. He led a force in Cuba during the Spanish American War in 1898. He returned a war hero, and was elected governor of New York and then helped McKinley become president.
In 1901, President McKinley was attending an exposition in Buffalo, New York when he was shot by Leon Czolgosz, initially it was believed he would recover. During this time Roosevelt, aged 42, was on vacation in Adirondack Mountains, When the Presidents condition got worse, Roosevelt returned to Buffalo. The President died and Roosevelt was sworn in as the 26th President. Roosevelt served as President from 1901-1909.
As president he cared about conservation and established parks and forests. He was able to read one to three books a day while writing thousands of letters and conducting the business of being president. He ordered the Panama Canal to be built in 1903, established the modern American navy, and improved labour conditions.
Roosevelt was a big-game hunter and enjoyed killing animals for fun.In 1902 on a hunting expedition, ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt refused to a shoot a cornered bear cub. This led manufacturers to produce ‘Teddy Bears’, which became an instant hit in America and then around the world.
He left office in 1909 and became unsuccessful in his own progressive party. His health started to deteriorate due to effects of tropical diseases; he was hospitalized and never recovered.  He suffered from breathing problems and on 5 January 1919, after feeling better he went to bed and died aged 60 in his sleep. His death was caused by a blood clot detached from a vein and traveled to his lungs. He had a simple funeral on a snowy day, and was buried on a hillside overlooking Oyster Bay.
