The day of the bombing before the explosion occured & after
On friday, September 26, 1980, at 10:20 pm, minutes before the festival would close for the day, an IED dropped in a metal bin at the northern main entrace of the Theresienwiese fairgrounds, exploded at a radius of about 20 meters.
The bomb consisted of a 1950s British mortar grenade inside a CO2 propellant cylinder from a fire extinguisher filled with nitrocellulose. It contained about 1.39 kg of TNT.
Seven people died instantly from the explosion. One of the bodies was quickly identified as the perpetrator: 21-year-old geology student Gundolf Köhler was found with both his hands torn off, most likely atomized. More than 200 people were injured in the attack, around 68 seriously. Six more people died either hours or days following the event.
The 13 fatalities (5 children, 8 adults):
Gabriele Deutsch (born 1962)
Robert Gmeinwieser (born 1963)
Axel Hirsch (born 1957)
Markus Hölzl (born 1936)
Paul Lux (born 1928)
Ignaz Platzer (born 1974)
Ilona Platzer (born 1972)
Franz Schiele (born 1947)
Angela Schüttrigkeit (born 1941)
Errol Vere-Hodge (born 1955)
Ernst Vestner (born 1950)
Beate Werner (born 1969)
and the bomber, Gundolf Köhler
In the 1980s investigation: various ties to right-wing extremism were found. He had joined multiple neo-nazi groups in the past, including the ‘Wehrsportgruppe Hoffmann' (WSG) and 'Wikingjungend'. A picture of Adolf Hitler and nazi memorobilia was found in his room. Bomb-making material as well was found in his parents' basement, though the TNT used was not. The police believed he built the bomb alone from that.
The final report concluded that Köhler's motives were personal and not of political intent. Stressors include his failing of an important university exam, failure with women, a desire for notoriety, a depressed outlook, and economic worries.
Many people sought to reopen the investigation as witnesses had testified seeing Köhler with possible accomplices before the bombing. Lawyer Werner Dietrich publicising the case files and Ulrich Chaussy's journalism were major causes for the reopening of the case.
In 2014 the investigation was reopened and in 2020 it closed again. The conclusion being:
"Gundolf Köhler acted out of right-wing extremist motivation. This follows from his contacts in right-wing extremist circles, his comments made shortly before the crime about how to influence the upcoming federal election, and his desire for a Führer state following the National Socialist model, which he also expressed in this context. Any personal motives and identified problem areas in Gundolf Köhler's personality have not called into question such a predominant political motivation."
Today is the final day of #Oktoberfest, an annual, two-week festival held in Munich, Germany. More than 6 million people attended this year’s festival, which returned after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. This Timelapse shows the festival coming to life in the Theresienwiese, Munich’s largest fairground at 4.5 million square feet (420,000 square meters).
