Old Trafford: Rebuild or Renovate?
It's a difficult question for United fans - do we fix up the shithole that is Old Trafford 2023, or do we knock it down and start anew?
Tumblr media
Old Trafford - Photo courtesy of Arne Müseler
The Glazer ownership has been pretty dire for Manchester United, despite success under Sir Alex Ferguson. Oblivious businessmen (and a woman in the Glazer sister) have been running the club into the mire through mismanagement.
The combo of Fergie and David Gill covered what most modern football management teams do, but they were special individuals. The best of the best. Everyone knew they couldn't be replaced or replicated, and so should have prepared for life after them by hiring better personnel - but they didn't. This impacted results, built up negative media coverage, and began a spiral into the Banter Decade from 2013 onwards (alongside Arsenal, how far we both fell eh) where we've gone on a rollercoaster ride of showing signs of life then fucking it all up.
A knock-on effect has been that less success has meant less income, which has hindered any extra spending on United's surroundings - notably Old Trafford but also Carrington.
This poses a problem. United, despite all the drama, still boast the biggest club stadium in the UK and almost always sell out matches. Demand is high, popularity is high, and yet there's been no expansion since 2006 to keep bringing more fans in, more money, more habitual support.
There's more though. A leaky roof in 2016. Promises to fix. A leaky roof still in 2019. A leaky roof still in 2021. This wasn't a repeat issue, it was an unresolved issue, due to a lack of funds and a lack of care.
Tumblr media
The same goes for United getting a pressure wash in 2021 and painted in 2021 and 2022 in different parts of the outer stadium, but we could go on about how shit the maintenance is for ages. Instead, we need to look to the future: what happens to Old Trafford.
---
History:
Old Trafford opened in 1910, but was only named such in 1936. The stadium capacity was larger before standing was abolished, but is still the largest in the UK at 74,310 capacity.
In contrast, Emirates has 60,704, Spurs have 62,850, and City has 53,400. Only Wembley (not a club ground) surpasses the club with 90,000.
---
As of March 14, 2022, United were considering three options:
Knock down Old Trafford and rebuild it from scratch
Rebuild & extend South Stand
Leave stadium structurally intact but conduct a revamp of spectator and corporate areas
This news came via Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail, with other reporters corroborating the information. It was also mentioned later that Old Trafford would not be part of the Euro 2028 bid due to probable development work.
---
The Options:
Option 1 is expensive but would potentially make a better use of the land. Old Trafford could be rebuilt in the same style, with some of the same parts (to keep it as OT) and moved 30 seconds down the road, with the current Old Trafford site now home to a 2nd stadium for the women's side and the youth teams - so that nobody has to travel to Leigh Sports Village (which is closer to Wigan than Manchester).
Below are some fancy concepts of what Old Trafford could look like.
Option 2 is the most popular online with the die-hard fans. Old Trafford is an historic site. Demolition is unconscionable and so renovation must be the route. The extension of the South Stand would see OT hit the 80,000 mark - still ahead of all other clubs and only behind Wembley. The Daily Mirror reckons that the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand would also be expanded, meaning a much closer total capacity to Wembley than initially thought.
Tumblr media
Option 3 is similar, and repairs across the stadium are a must. The issue is that so to is some form of expansion to ensure that fans can actually show up without having to fight for the cheaper tickets like mad OR pay out the £150+ fees for the 'special' seats.
Tumblr media
Concept art (lacking enough red for my liking) of a refurbished and expanded Old Trafford.
What hasn't been considered is an Option 4: Relocate the ground to an area nearby (but not literally on the same patch) which would allow a bigger capacity, better structural foundation, and avoid the issue of the neighbouring train line.
Populous and Legends International are the consultants that the Glazers have hired regarding Old Trafford. They designed the Houston stadium that United played in this summer, as well as Wembley, the Emirates and Spurs' new ground. What do they have in common? Demolition. They started fresh.
This is where the clash of fan opinion comes in, because there's so much to address. In no particular order:
Internet connectivity - for fans and media
Small press box at present
Poor roof
Poor acoustics
Lack of space to expand
Lack of space in the Concourse
Solving the train line dilemma
Limited leg room for fans
Poor disability allocation for fans
Truthfully, I think it would take new owners to push Option 4, and the Glazers - out of pure necessity - would back Option 3 and eke into Option 2 and expansion; the South Stand first and then maybe the Charlton Stand IF no new owners have come in the next two years.
Work is on hold as of January 2023 till a sale is pushed through, though given the Glazers' high asking price... maybe no sale and work resumes. Who knows anymore. I do hope for the sale though. We need investment. We're owned by people who take dividends over repairing our ground, over developing The Cliff or expanding Carrington so that the women's team can train in Manchester and not fucking Leigh. Casey Stoney quit for a reason - it's an unprofessional situation led by greed rather than by ambition. The impact on the women's side is just the beginning. There will be more failures and hopefully it's not something disastrous like a structural issue with Old Trafford because the size, and age, could result in a serious tragedy if things continue to be left alone.

Depending on the outcome they can re-roll some or all, then use the dice to claim routes on the board grab. But rather than draw and collect Train cards, they roll five custom Train dice each turn. In this expansion for the Ticket to Ride series, players still attempt to complete their Destination Tickets and claim routes and block each other on the map. Ticket to Ride: The Dice Expansion társasjáték Kiegészítő.It comes with a new board, 46 new destination cards and a set of rules (in several languages) to create a new game. Officially an expansion that works with either Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride: Europe, Ticket to Ride: Switzerland requires the train pieces and train cards from the above mentioned original games to work. Ticket to Ride: Mystery Train Expansion társasjáték Kiegészítő.Midenkinek ajánlom, akinek megvan valamelyik alapjáték, a T2R sorozat rajongói sem fognak csalódni. Összességében mind a kettő új pálya összetettebbé és kompetitívebbé teszi a játékot, a játékidő is megnő valamelyest. Ehhez új (fehér) vonatkészletet is kapunk. Nem hiányoznak a környező országokat összekötő jegyek sem. Ráadásul a szín kiválasztásával egyes utak lezárulnak a játék időtartamára, köszönhetően az egymást metsző lehetőségeknek. Ticket to ride map how to#
(Also we have Switzerland but haven't played it. The discarding plastic trains mechanic helps speed up the game and makes it feel more like a race, which is exciting. (Disclaimer: I don't play with the Terrain cards, feels better without 'em.)ġ: Legendary Asia - Kinda my favorite just because there's nothing that annoys me, and all the twists are simple good ones. It doesn't feel like the fairest version, but it always makes me smile. And, the mandala mechanic adds more choices, and acts as a catch-up possibility.Ģ: Africa - The board is cleverly organized into color-themed areas here, which makes this map hilariously memorably challenging. It's obviously luck based, but so is the real game, this helps you appreciate the randomness.ģ: India - Since it's all mostly small segments, and so intricate, it always feels like there are a lot of choices. I should buy the 1910 stuff.Ĥ: New York - I love fast board games, and this is a good one. Still, playing across the USA feels so right. But I think tunnels are a terrible mechanic.ĥ: USA - Just doesn't feel balanced: the long horizontal cards are so powerful, and the 6-long segments are so powerful. Also, TTR should be shorter, not longer.ħ: World (Rails and Sails) - Slightly preferred over Great Lakes, only because going around the World is cool and novel.Ħ: Europe - It's a good big map that feels fresh every time, and stations are a good friendly twist. The tickets are not balanced well without the money rules though.Ĩ: Great Lakes (Rails and Sails) - Pretty fun, but doesn't feel very interactive. Losing money hurts, but gaining money doesn't feel that great. Doesn't look like the map would work without the new mechanics, either.ĩ: Netherlands - An interesting concept that isn't that fun in practice, IMO. We should try it again without the stocks, maybe.ġ0: United Kingdom - Way too much work, and longer fiddly turns that felt out of place. Also, tunnels are bad.ġ1: Pennsylvania - A lot of work, and the stocks game undermines the Ticket to Ride game, in my opinion. We should try it again without that rule. Visit Metro Transit Regular Route Service for a map of bus stop locations.
Ticket to ride map how to#
The UK map requires 35 trains, the Pennsylvania map requires 45 trains, and Nordic Countries contains 40 of each colour (with 5 spare).Disappointed they didn't try harder to explain the rankings, so here's mine of what I played, quickly:ġ2: Team Asia - We found it extremely frustrating that you weren't allowed to talk to your teammate. For details on schedules, bus ride pricing, how to buy bus tickets and more. However use with Nordic Countries would be limited to three players and use of spare trains. Despite the name, the map covers both the UK and the Republic of Ireland, that is, the islands of Great Britain and Ireland.Īlthough officially an expansion for Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride: Europe, this could be used for Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries. Players can also buy bonus cards that allow them to score extra points for taking certain actions during play. Game description from the publisher: Set in the vast wilderness of Africa at the height of its exploration by intrepid explorers, missionaries and adventurers, Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 3 - The Heart of Africa, a single-sided expansion map for Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride: Europe, focuses on the central and southern 'heart' of the continent displayed in a vertical format. By spending wild cards, players gain the ability to build routes three trains long or longer, in addition to being able to build ferries across water and build train routes in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. At the start of the game, players can build only one- and two-train routes and only in England. The United Kingdom half of this map collection introduces the concept of technology to TtR. At the end of the game, whoever holds more shares of a company than all other players receives points as a reward. Each time that a player completes a route, they claim a share of one of the companies depicted next to that route. The Pennsylvania half of this map collection adds a share mechanism to the basic TtR game. Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 5 – United Kingdom & Pennsylvania contains a double-sided game board with new rules for use with Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride: Europe with players now creating train lines in the British Isles and in Pennsylvania.

Rebecca Visits Coney Island
Tumblr media
Rebecca’s fifth book, Rebecca to the Rescue, tells the story of her family’s visit to Steeplechase Park on Coney Island. Today, they’ve returned to spend a few hours having fun on the rides and playing the games. She decides that this will be the day that she gets really good at the Tip the Bottle game!
Tumblr media
The reason being that she has her eyes on a prize. The little wind-up carousel music box is the grand prize that she’ll win if she can knock down all three bottles on her first pitch.
Tumblr media
Last time, Victor won a Kewpie doll for her; this time, she wants that carousel. It reminds her of riding the colorful, musical carousel here at the park!
I originally reproduced Rebecca’s Coney Island Games set two years ago. But I've since revamped it with better materials and added a few pieces to the set, combining it with Rebecca’s Souvenir Set that was originally released with the debut of Rebecca’s collection. I was able to reproduce all of it with some foam board, lids, paint, printable images, and fabric scraps.
Tumblr media
Here are the original sets released by American Girl, that I based my pieces on. Left is the 2017 games set, right is her 2010 souvenir set.
She’s wearing her Play Dress that matches with the Coney Island Games set. It was released in 2017 and unfortunately retired in 2019 for no good reason at all. It came with the dress, boots, tights, and adorable straw hat. It’s one of my favorite of her outfits, so I’m glad I bought it before it was gone!
Tumblr media
Tip the Bottle costs one ticket for three throws. This is a printout of both sides of the original ticket from the souvenir set, taped together and strung on a piece of kitchen twine. When I need printables I usually look at listings on eBay for good photographs of items.
Tumblr media
She gets three beanbags to throw at the three bottles. Last time she was here, Victor told her she was bad at throwing things. Rebecca pointed out that he was allowed to play baseball, but girls aren’t. So how would she be able to practice in the first place? Victor invited her to practice her throwing and batting, and so by now she has gotten much better at it. Even still...... will she be good enough to hit all the bottles on the first throw?
Tumblr media
Oh no.... after three tries, she only knocked one bottle over!
Tumblr media
She gets to spin the prize wheel and pick out one of the cute little chalkware animal figurines, but she came here to win that carousel and she intends to do just that! No giving up until all her tickets are gone!
Her little prize wheel is made from a plastic lid that I painted and mounted to some painted foam board. The animal figurines are Littlest Pet Shop animals. The Kewpie is a thrift store find.
Rebecca steps up to try again. This time, she knocks them all over in the first throw!
Tumblr media
Look at that! None of them remained standing!
I made this from foam board that I painted. The text and embellishments are printouts. I managed to find the same font that the AG set used for the text! The center platform is a Mason jar lid painted and glued to a black marker holding it up.
Tumblr media
The milk bottles are painted food coloring bottles. The beanbags are fabric scraps sewn into squares and filled with salt.
Tumblr media
The little carousel is finally hers!
Tumblr media
I made the base of the carousel from an applesauce cup painted with acrylic paints. The center pole is a straw painted metallic gold. The top is foam board and a painted gold bead at the center. To make the horses, I pressed my smallest horse figurine into clay to make a mold, sprayed it with nonstick cooking spray, and then filled it with hot glue. Once the glue dried, I peeled it out of the mold and painted it. I used pictures of the original piece as reference for painting them.
Rebecca can keep all of her small souvenirs in a beautiful memory book with an embossed seashell on the front.
Tumblr media
This is a printed image of the original.
Tumblr media
She keeps her game tickets, admission tickets, and postcards in here. All of these are also printed images.
Tumblr media
Her teeny tiny postcards real postcards from 1915, which I found with a google search. These were my three favorites of the many that I picked out.
Tumblr media
Her admission tickets are scans of real 20-cent tickets from the 1910′s. They’re actually not for Steeplechase Park but rather for Luna Park, one of the three amusement parks on Coney Island that were operating back then.
Tumblr media
Rebecca is so excited to be bringing home not only a nifty little souvenir, but lots of fun memories of Steeplechase Park!

It was a bitty start with lots of chit-chat and eating, including Blue’s fantastic pizza with mushrooms growing out of it. A little bit of singing to celebrate the fact it was the eve of our seventh birthday was immediately followed by special meeplecakes. Eventually, when everyone had finally finished sucking the icing off their wooden meeples, we finally settled down to the now traditional…

Susan Lawrence Dana-Jorgen Dahl and the German Airship Travel Corporation
On November 15, 1912, Susan Lawrence Jorgen-Dahl and her new husband, Lawrence Jorgen-Dahl bought tickets for a ride on the German zeppelin Hansa. In doing so, the two of them became passengers on the world’s first passenger airline, the Deutsche Luftschifffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft (German Airship Travel Corporation) or DELAG.
DELAG was founded in 1910 as a commercial passenger branch of the Zeppelin Luftshiffbau company, in part as an attempt to raise funds and diversify the Zeppelin company, which up until that time, was entirely dependent on the German military for its funding. The German military, however, had proved reluctant to invest large amounts of funds in the new and largely unproved airship technology.
The idea of a passenger line did not appeal to the aristocratic founder of the Zeppelin company, Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin, who felt that the idea of a commercial line was a mercantile concern and thus beneath him. However, DELAG did find favor with the head of the Hamburg America Line, a well established steamship company. The Hamburg America Line provided money to promote DELAG in exchange for exclusive rights to sell tickets.
DELAG’s first zeppelin was the Deutschland, which was first flown in June of 1910, had accommodation for 24 passengers, and cruised at 32 mph. The Deutschland’s top sustained speed of 32 mph wasn’t enough for her to be able to reliably fly against the wind, making scheduled inter-city service difficult at best. Thus, DELAG was only able to offer pleasure cruises around the vicinity of their bases. None the less, the novelty of cruising through the sky, seeing the landscape unfolding below proved popular.
The life of the Deutschland was short. She flew her first flight on June 19th, 1910, but she was destroyed on June 28th of the same year when she was caught in a thunderstorm. Luckily for DELAG, they had another airship, which had originally been constructed for the German army. This ship was reconfigured for passengers, and successful flights were made almost daily from August to mid-September. Although they suffered a number of set backs with the delicate zeppelins, which were susceptible to both fire and bad weather, by summer of 1914 and the onset of WWI, DELAG had produced four more zeppelins, including the Hansa, the ship on which Mr. And Mrs. Lawrence Jorgen-Dahl rode, and carried a total of 34, 028 passengers.
DELAG’s airships were pressed into service by the German army during WWI. Afterward, the company planned on relaunching their passenger services, and even adding transatlantic service. These plans suffered a major set back when the remaining German airships were surrendered to the Allied forces. Additionally, the Treaty of Versailles forbid Germany from constructing military airships or any airships large enough to cross the Atlantic.
By 1925, these restrictions were relaxed, and Zeppelin Luftschiffbau began construction of an airship large enough for transatlantic service. In September of 1928, this airship, the Graf Zeppelin, was completed. In October of 1928, DELAG began nonstop transatlantic service from Friedrichshafen Germany to Lakehurt Field, New Jersey. In 1931, DELAG added regular passenger service to South America, which would continue until 1937.
The rise of the Nazi party in 1933 affected DELAG’s fortunes. Nazi Germany decided that the zeppelins would be an excellent platform for propaganda campaigns. The Zeppelin company was thus restructured by the Nazi government, becoming associated with Goebbels’ Ministry of Propaganda and Goring’s Air Ministry.
DELAG’s fortunes further declined after the high profile Hindenburg disaster, and by 1938, the surviving zeppelins and scrap from the Hindenburg was melted down for use in fixed wing military aircraft.

How I rate board games
This post doesn’t really fit the theme of this blog. Also, there’s really no reason for anyone to actually want to read it, since I am far from an authority or a reliable reviewer. But I wrote it, and I wanted to post it somewhere. Don’t read it if you don’t want to. ;)
First, my rationale. I usually rate games based on how much I enjoy them and want to play them. There are some games I rate low that I know others really love, and that’s fine.
An eight-point scale makes the most sense to me: 0 to 7 out of 7. Any more than that and I feel like I’m forced into score inflation (y’know, like grade inflation but for scores?); any less and I lose nuance and have to shove two games which I like significantly different amounts into the same bucket. This is because each of my ratings has a specific meaning. Here they are (lists of games in each category are in no particular order):
7 out of 7: This is my favorite game. Every time I play it, it blows my mind how compelling and just pure fun it is. There are only two games in this category (which I’ve played so far — I would love to add more!): the Mage Knight Board Game, and Inis.
6 out of 7: This is as good as I could possibly hope for a game designed by a mere mortal to be. I love it. Games in this category include Gloomhaven, Kingdom Death: Monster, Dominion, and Ra.
5 out of 7: This is a wonderful game. I will play it with you whenever you are willing — unless maybe I’ve just played it, but that goes for even 7s — and I will thoroughly enjoy it. I’d be happy to own this game. Games in this category include Android: Netrunner, Through the Ages, King of Tokyo, Pandemic: On the Brink and In the Lab, Jaipur, Eclipse, Codenames, Lords of Waterdeep and Scoundrels of Skullport, and Carcassonne.
4 out of 7: This is a great game. If I haven’t played it in a while, I’ll suggest it. It would fit in my collection, but I have no drive to buy it if it’s not already there. Games in this category include Trajan, Age of Steam, vanilla Pandemic, Millennium Blades, Mystic Vale, Twilight Imperium third edition, Pente, and Splendor.
3 out of 7: This is a pretty good game. If you want to play it with me, I’ll happily oblige, but I won’t suggest it unless maybe I haven’t played it in a long time and am in just the right mood. I’ve no need to own these games. Games in this category include 7 Wonders Duel, Triassic Terror, Zong Shi, Stratego, Ticket to Ride and USA 1910, Age of Steam: St. Lucia, Othello, Terraforming Mars, Clank!, Agricola, Wizard, and Century: Spice Road.
2 out of 7: I do not find this to be a good game. I’ll play it, but just to socialize with the other people playing — the game won’t add anything. Games in this category include Monopoly, Have You Herd?, Catan and Cities & Knights, and Risk.
1 out of 7: I may still play this to be be part of a social event, but the game will probably actively detract from my enjoyment of myself. Games in this category include Exploding Kittens, Forbidden Island, and Betrayal at House on the Hill.
0 out of 7: I won’t play this game. Except maybe if someone really important wants to, like a little kid of my crush. Have I ever played any games in this category? I think so, but I can’t recall any right now.
Of course, occasionally games don’t fit into these categories. For instance, SeaFall really deserves a 1, but some of its ideas are easily a 5... if only they could be implemented in a game without a completely and utterly broken base system.

There are lots of tourists in HongKong Disneyland from different countries and believe it or not, they are easy to approach with. You can ask them to take a photo of you and they gladly accept it and some people even offer to take a photo of you. How cool is that right?
Their staffs speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese and they are easy to be approached too.

We all want something to buy from a certain place we visited, right? In HongKong Disneyland, there are lots of souvenir shops. Near the entrance of the park, there are stools there selling cute hairbands like Mickey Mouse’s ears and it costs HKD 158 each. That’s the main souvenir we can buy from Disneyland. Just purchased Ticket to Ride 1910 expansion today and I am constantly reminded of how much I appreciate the little things about Days of Wonder games, such as the gold foil band around the cards to make opening them so much easier than most other decks that come in standard shrink wrap.

Photo above William James Sidis 11yrs age, Born 4/1/1898 -By 18 months was said able to read the New York Times -Highest IQ tested(allegedly though perhaps a bit lower) -Lightly spoke 8 languages by 8, at 9 invented another Vendergood which had 12 numeric characters, the reasoning he put was “12 is the smallest number which had four factors” -About all the recreation he’s was allowed as a child was a ride on the Streetcar
-(1910)At age 12, Sidis’ mastery of higher mathematics was such that he lectured the Harvard Mathematical Club on four-dimensional bodies. -(1914)Graduated Harvard Cum Laude at 16, said by professors to be exceptionally intelligent. At his graduation, he told the gathered newspapermen, “I want to live the perfect life. The only way to live the perfect life is to live it in seclusion. I have always hated crowds.” -(1915)Sidis’s parents arrange he teaches three classes: Non/Euclidean Geometry and freshman math (he wrote a 2nd textbook for the Euclidean geometry course in Greek) . -(1916)Bails on teaching due to conditions, happy to lose the job, and goes back to Harvard for Law and in 1919 drops out because he does not believe in the law system. -(1919) Age 20(a month from 21) shortly after his withdrawal from law school, Sidis was arrested for participating in a socialist May Day parade in Boston carrying a red flag which turned violent.  During the trial, Sidis stated that he had been a conscientious observer to the World War 1 draft, was a socialist, and did not believe in a god like the “big boss of the Christians”. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison under the Sedition Act passed a year earlier in 1918, his parents to keep him out of jail had the district attorney adjust the sentence to instead serve 2 Years in THEIR sanitarium. While at the sanatorium, his parents set about “reforming” him and threatened him with transfer to an insane asylum. (This part I take issue with, a genius caged by his parents and after already finding sound reason, which I’m sorry, capitalism, war, and religion are destructive madness especially during WW1, he was correct.) -(1920)Postulated the existence of dark matter in his book 2 years before Jacobus Kapteyn who the world claims was the first due to it being more formally mathed using stellar velocities. -(1921)Sidis took a ticket out of town determined to live an independent and private life only taking work running adding machines or other fairly menial task, clerk, and once a broker. He was concerned about his risk of being arrested for years traumatized, such he obsessively collected streetcar transfers(symbolizing his journey to freedom and childhood recreation, his original ticket 1059 can be seen on the cover of a book he wrote at length to cope with peridromophilia), also writing self-published periodicals, and taught small circles of interested friends his version of American history(Native American also on the philosophy of “anonymous contribution”). -(1937) After living his life fairly meekly and privately for 16 years(shifting jobs any time he was discovered at a workplace). The New Yorker Aug 14th 1937 writes an article titled ‘April Fool’ a jab at his April 1st birthday which was largely biographical but scathing about his housing and other matters. Seven years later he won a defamation settlement, 2 years later he died of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 46, much as his father did at 56. Later in his life he was sickened by math interviewed once saying “The very sight of a mathematical formula makes me physically ill“ more than likely despising the cold rational parts of the world which hold it on high empirically. For all his scorn once discovered he still believed in the power of the other in a society based around it as an ideal. It’s sad so many think he squandered his potential in only ever wanting privacy and promoting anti-war/faith and materialism. He was sharp enough not to play the game which cripples the world, I respect it.
