I see lots of sets that are showcases for the bandleader’s tunes. I get that though my preference is for the canon of established/emerging classics and the Great American Songbook. It is the rarest of tunes that become canonical, even for the giants. Duke Ellington wrote well over 1000 tunes, that, conservatively, 100, perhaps 150, are gems is a remarkable percentage. But, even if most tunes as tunes are ephemeral, they always serve to illuminate the performer’s aesthetic.

Those specifics helped with these gigs as they fleshed out expectations. MARTA SANCHEZ was, as expected, bracing and challenging and yet she brought a transparency to bear that invited listeners in. SIMONA PREMAZZI had disappointed me in some sets last September with Jeremy Pelt where she didn’t unwind and serve the trumpeter’s lush vision. And RACHEL Z interested me because of a previous Wayne Shorter tribute.

My expectations were informed and mostly accurate. Wonderfully though—and precisely because the music is ephemeral—it paid to be in the moment on its own terms—or as much as possible as I take notes in anticipation of these souvenirs. To enter a solipsistic house of mirrors, these essays are even more ephemeral than the music I write about. That some of you read them is gratifying (thank you), but I’m just woodshedding. Despite tags, I can’t really lay hands on previous ones (like Premazzi with Pelt) in tumblr and revisit them when they show up, as they often do, in FB memories. So, they really are for me in the moment. Like the music.

MARTA SANCHEZ has done some solo piano sets sharing the stage with Ethan Iverson and, besides his mentions, had gotten some ink that caught my eye. Her opener, as she showcased her new release Perpetual Void with this band, was I Don’t Want To Live the Wrong Life. Even as I got my bearings, there was a brightness and, if far from hummable, a clear structure. The band communicates well, though Savannah Harris was too busy at least on the stream which doesn’t mix the sound from a small room and Sanchez is a more moderate player. Chris Todini, also a little low in the mix, nonetheless made his bass matter with just right lines in accompaniment. The set grew on me as I figured out the dynamics and, more importantly, how Sanchez puts her tunes together. They are spiky and intricate, but she also helps us see what she’s doing. And the seeing and attention it invites matters as my listen to the album left an impression of complication.

Tenor saxophonist KYLE NASSER coleads this band with SIMONA PREMAZZI. He wrote three of their five tunes while she had the other two. Their music had an edge but their variations on familiar themes (hard bop, ballad, riff/groove) were vehicles for Nasser’s pleasant midregister horn and Premazzi’s more sprawling piano. Her aesthetic, as expressed in the compositions, is impatient with the canon. Here she could play bigger. Drummer Jay Sawyer had the bigger room than Harris with Sanchez at Mezzrow’s, but even so he was better modulated to his bandmates and did so many things worth appreciating.

RACHEL Z again evoked her time with Wayne Shorter and covered ESP and The Three Marias. Those were mid set and helped illuminate her own music. The opener had an almost pop feel particularly with Dann Zinn’s tenor work and yet he and she dug into it and gave it overtones beyond the riff and the major chords. Zinn was twitchier in a good way over Rachel Z’s bed that built from a left hand figure and accelerated in a rockish way to the outro for a tribute to Artemesia Gentileschi. Then came the Shorter tunes. ESP from the Miles era showed everyone’s jazz bona fides, but The Three Marias from the 1980s had some of the drive and deceptive simplicity of the opening originals. The closer was for her husband Omar Hakim who was in Weather Report with Shorter. Entitled Sensual it had an R&B prettiness that added an edge.

I doubt any of these players will be getting the kind of royalties checks that Wayne Shorter did for covers of his tunes. But they as much as the playing are expressions of the high degree of craft and art of these leaders.

 In uscita il nuovo singolo del cantautore e scrittore Massimo Zona che dal 3 febbraio si potrà ascoltare su tutte le principali piattaforme e nelle radio in promozione nazionale.

Massimo Zona nasce a Roma, dove frequenta il liceo classico al Virgilio di Via Giulia. Laureato in Giurisprudenza, lavora come dirigente in una multinazionale del petrolio. Giornalista pubblicista, appena arriva alla pensione riesce a dedicarsi a quello che più gli è sempre piaciuto: scrivere. Nel 2015 pubblica il suo primo romanzo “Rosso teatro”, episodio iniziale della serie Mauro Baveni Detective, arrivato all’ottavo capitolo a dicembre 2022 con l’uscita del libro “Il mistero del Monte Maggiore”.

Da sempre compone musica e canzoni, fin dal lontano 1966 quando fondò i “Baroja”, una band (all’epoca le chiamavano complessi) con tre amici, con due dei quali, dopo tanti anni, ha ripreso a frequentarsi, riprendendo a registrare e a incidere. A settembre 2022 ha pubblicato un libro di poesie intitolato “Come rami” e questa sua vena si percepisce molto bene nelle parole delle sue canzoni. Al suo attivo anche un libro di racconti brevi e una commedia musicale. Da anni vive e lavora a Calvi Risorta, una piccola cittadina della provincia di Caserta. Di lui il suo primo editore, Giovanni Pezzulo scrive: “... attraverso la sua musica di autodidatta e i suoi versi, ha fissato momenti di autentica ispirazione, rivolti a sentimenti e moti dell’animo di consistente spessore …” 

E ci piace chiudere con le stesse parole del Professor Vittorio Todini, nella sua opera “Recensione di opere di un cantautore”: “Ma è tempo che giudichiate voi stessi!”

Instrument designer and maker Nicola Amati was born on 3 September 1596 in Cremona. His long life was spent amid parents, siblings, and children who also created, taught, or played string instruments, primarily violins. Amati developed a type of violin that is similar to modern orchestral versions, curved and long-cornered, with mathematically-derived outlines and transparent amber-colored varnish.

Amati made important contributions to the world of violin making not just by what he made, but by whom he taught. Initially having no sons to carry on the family business as was traditional at the time, Amati was one of the first to take apprentices from outside his family into his workshop. Andrea Guarneri, who eventually founded the Guarneri Family of violin makers, was a pupil, and at least one Antonio Stradivari label, dated 1666, reads, “Alumnus Nicolais Amati.” Amati died in his hometown of Cremona on 12 August 1684. 

Instruments were considered fine artworks themselves both during and before the baroque period in Italian art and were often the subject or theme of other media depicting them.

Music was the theme for Elsa Schiaparelli’s fall 1939 collection, which manifested itself in music boxes on belts and hats, buttons shaped like drums, and shimmering embroidered instruments and music notes. Schiaparelli used Renaissance prints for her inspiration for the gloves shown here, made to be worn with an evening dress which they match.
