Redes Sociales: La Mejor Frecuencia para Postear
Tumblr media
Edad: De 7 a diez años.

Togetherville: Facebok for Children
Disney has acquired the rights of  Togetherville, which is Facebook for children under the age of 10. Wow, I never knew even kids love to socialize.
Here’s how Togetherville describes itself on its website,
Today’s kids are growing up in a world that requires a whole new set of skills to become responsible digital citizens. In Togetherville, your kids learn much more than computer skills: they…

"Make good digital citizens"
Recently, I've read a few articles about children using the Internet, especially social media networks.  I believe Facebook requires users to be at least 13 years old; however, there is a market for kids under 13 years old. While I accept the fact that kids' lives are entirely wrapped up in technology, I think it is important that parents and schools have serious conversations about the benefits and risks of the Internet with children. Below is a blurb from an article in LAPTOP magazine about cyberbullying (a whole topic in itself), but I found the first part extremely relevant to my concern with educating children about the Internet: "Before your child takes the first plunge into socializing on the Internet, explain tht the web is a public place - even when messages are sent via a 'private' channel such as e-mail or instant message. Likewise, explain that sites that focus on open-air communications, such as Facebook and Twitter, may offer alternate, private ways to contact friends and family, but those messages can be forwarded or copy-and-pasted to anyone. The same can be said for your-eyes-only e-mail and text messages. According to a 2007 study on cyberbullying by the Pew Research Center, the most prevalent form of online bulling is a private message shared with others against the commenter's will. Minimize the threat of this type of public embarrassment by reminding your child to be mindful of what they share, even with trusted friends and family." Butler, Kenneth. "Delete That Cyberbully." LAPTOP March 2011: 89-91. As time goes on, new social media networks will be created, and possibly outshine Facebook. (I guess they'll need to make The Social Network 2, lol) It is best for children to be educated about the Internet as a whole and not specific Internet medias.  This will allow children to apply ideas to any activities on the Internet. I remember when I first joined Facebook, and not all of my friends were using it, nor did my parents have any idea what Facebook was for. Parents cannot always keep up with the "in" thing, which is why it is important to research and discuss the Internet. Earlier this month I saw an article about Disney's release of an under 13 social media network called Togetherville. It allows children to have a social network experience while parents monitor and interact with their child's activity. This offers communication opportunities for parents and children to talk about Internet etiquette. I'm not sure I'm a super fan on little kids online, but if they must be online, I suppose this is a decent start. What do you think???

Facebook For Kids
“Today’s kids are growing up in a world that requires a whole new set of skills to become responsible digital citizens. In Togetherville, your kids learn much more than computer skills: they explore how to be creative, express themselves and learn in a fun, interactive and ad-free way. We help them use technology to connect with the important people in their lives – safely and responsibly.” - togetherville.com
Disney just acquired the rights to a social hub designed for kids 10 and younger. It's supposed to work like Facebook and will allow children to interact with each other, play games and even update statuses. Parents are in charge of monitoring their child's access, and adults can even log in with already existing Facebook information.
Really? Has social networking online become such a norm that even kids who still aren't tall enough to ride most theme park rides have to join in? Maybe I'm too skeptical, but this seems like it's pushing the limits of sanity. The first thing I thought of was safety. I haven't read too far into the story, but I really hope they have set something up to protect kids when the parents aren't at their sides. And let's face it, most parents won't be there 100% of the time while their kids are on this site. I'm interested in seeing how long until huge advertisers tap into this miniature market like they have already done on Facebook.
