A painter of portraits, figure subjects, flower pieces, landscapes and nudes, Zerge received a large number of portrait commissions, through which he seems to have earned his livelihood, although his other paintings, particularly the flower pieces, also sold well. As he himself noted, in a 1976 interview, ‘I paint so incredibly old-fashioned. But I think you should see what is represented. I cannot with the best will in the world think that it makes a person better by putting an eye on the forehead and nose on the chest.’ Although Zerge’s works are today to be found in the museums of Gävle, Kristianstad and Tomelilla in Sweden, he remains largely forgotten in his native county.

313 weeks / 72 months / Six years. That’s how long it’s been since I read the news about Chester. And remember waking up that morning not being able to move, how scared I was. I remember so clear how my brain begged my body to move but that it refused. I was held down by a force so strong. When it so let me go, I wasn’t even relieved. And I remember Tomelilla Marknad. Only me and mum went, because dad he had to work and would come later. Mum said she would buy me old almanacs but I said no and she started an argument about why I didn’t wanted any. I remember standing with her near the busstop because dad would arrive by bus. I remember the seagull walking around and I told mum that was Thomas keeping an eye on us. I often said that but this time, it felt different. That whole day felt weird and unpleasant. In the car ride home, I listened to ‘Papercut’ That song always calmed me down. That was the first song I ever heard by Linkin Park. This time, the song didn’t calm me down and panic within held me so hard in its grip by that point. Thoughts about Lullaby and Thomas attacked me, I saw scenarios on what had happened to them while I was away. I read the news about Chester that evening and suddenly it all made sense. I began to count weeks after he had died, I had never done that before. 91 weeks after Chester died, my Thomas was taken from me. 47 weeks after Thomas; 138 weeks after Chester, my Lullaby was taken from me. I often see them together on amazing adventures.

Owe Zerge was a Swedish artist born in Kristianstad in 1894. Between 1914 and 1915, Zerge studied at the Althin Painting School in Stockholm. This was followed by the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, where he studied for Olle Hjortzberg and Oscar Björck from 1915 to 1919. In the same period, he also attended Axel Tallberg's etching school for a short time. This was followed by study trips to Italy and France, where he studied under André Lhote. Zerge made his debut at the Salon de Paris in 1921 and the following year he exhibited at Liljevalchs Konsthall in Stockholm. He specialized in portraits, figure motifs, flowers and landscapes, and in recent years his portraits have attracted attention; they are characterized by their sharpness and details and are almost photographic.

Owe Zerge is represented in several museums in Sweden, including Gävle Museum, Kristianstad Museum and Tomelilla Museum.

Vävda rum (Woven Places) is Sweden's first countrywide exhibition in augmented reality, displaying 10 new virtual artworks by Swedish artists in over 1600 locations across the country.
