Night Shyamalan, Elliott Smith, Grizzly Smith, Lord Alfred Tennyson, the 1947 premier of "Bachianas Brasilieras No 8" by Villa-Lobos, Vinnie Vincent, Andy Warhol, Michelle Yeoh, and my friend and musical colleague Daniel Berkman: Electronic musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, looper and innovator of the Kora (a 21-stringed harp-lute from West Africa). He’s not just all that, he’s a master of all that—a gift to the San Francisco Bay Area music scene and a national treasure. Playing anything else with a string or a drumhead, he also takes on exotic instruments from around the world—and probably some not of this world. Daniel and I have recorded together, and he’s a cinch to work with. Check out his music here and download some tracks. https://danielberkman.bandcamp.com Also check out our collaboration on peter chauncey’s “Numbers For Days” w/Daniel in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sozmt1q3kn8 Meanwhile, HB DB and thank you for your awesome and adventurous creativity.

GAME THEORY! The revered Kingdom Hearts music composer, Yoko Shimomura, sure made some tight shit, but one of her songs sounds suspiciously close to a little ditty that was released a year prior..! THE HOLLOW BASTION THEME, listen to it, and then turn your attention to the song called “Icarus“ by the Dutch master race symphony-rockband, Kayak. Yes, those intros sound worryingly close, and tone-deaf judges have allowed for suing artists to walk away with millions over less matching melodies, but then.. did cutie pie Shimomura steal from composer Ton Scherpenzeel? No, it goes deeper than that, music lovers! This is proof of INTERDIMENSIONAL MUSICAL HAIR SOUL BINDING! Look at the picture I found on Shimomura’s Wiki page. Why in the tap-dancing cow did that picture get chosen, while Google Images shows us so many high quality photos where she doesn’t look like she’s been shaking hands with rabid fans at an anime convention for over 3 days. But when you look at Ton’s photo, you suddenly see what is going on..! The user that posted this picture WANTED us to see, as it shows off Shimomura’s power right in the moment! When her hair loses its volume, she’s able to connect with the best in the world and borrow their essence; all those artists who have the same haircut! You know it’s true, why else are long-haired people dominating the music industry. They are one. Hope you liked this cool Kingdom Hearts trivia!

Queen live at Congresgebouw in The Hague, Netherlands - December 8, 1974
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Queen's first show in the Netherlands. The Dutch band "Kayak" played before Queen, but perhaps not as the traditional opening act. Some members of Kayak have claimed that it was a 'double bill' organised by EMI records to promote both bands (thanks to Jeroen Kooistra for the story).
There is a pic of Kayak's guitarist, Johan Slager, seen at this blog, with Queen's monitor (sporting the Queen II crest) in front of him. The photographer didn't take photos during Queen's set as he, like a fair number of people on hand, was a fan of Kayak, not Queen.
Here’s what the blogger wrote:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On 8 december 1974, British rockband Queen -my alltime favourite band, by the way- played at the Congresgebouw in The Hague, Holland. Kayak were support act (although some people say it was in fact a 'combi-concert', organised by EMI Records). Queen were a relatively new band at the time. Like Kayak, their first album was released in 1973. At the end of 1974 they had just had their first European hit with "Killer Queen". Of course, later Queen became one of the biggest bands of all time. But at the The Hague concert in 1974, probably more people were there for Kayak, and not so much for Queen... The members of Kayak don't really have special memories of this gig, although Max Werner does remember getting some 'presentation-tips' from Freddie Mercury, and Johan Slager seems to recall that Queen-guitarist Brian May watched part of the Kayak show backstage, and complimented Kayak afterwards. Ton Scherpenzeel mainly remembers Queen playing 'loud and not quite subtle'... Ton also remembers that he had a very short talk with Queen's drummer Roger Taylor after the show. When Roger asked Ton what he thought of Queen's performance, Ton -not too impressed by the concert- could only say 'Great lightshow'. End of conversation... Road manager at the time was Hans Kloes. He recalls a bit of commotion about Kayak using Queen's PA or not. In the end, Kayak played with their own equipment, and they were quite satisfied with the sound.
The show sold poorly due to bad promotion. People passing the venue were let in for free, so it would appear more full.
Mercury is timid after the first song. "Thank you and good evening, and welcome to the show. This is our first time in Holland, and I know you're going to like it. Yes? It's really nice to see you all. It really is. Right now we'd like to carry on with a number from Queen II; that's our album. And this is Ogre Battle." He delivers the song convincingly. After the audience quickly quieten down afterward, he remarks, "It's so quiet; you can hear a pin drop, you know, one of those things." They warm up to him a bit when they confirm they've heard of Queen II upon his asking.
"We'd like to do a sad number. A very sort of delicate, sad number, so you'd better get your handkerchiefs out. You know those things?" He then introduces White Queen, the third song in a row from their second album.
After the medley, he says (referring particularly to the musical complexity of Bring Back That Leroy Brown): "I hope that took you by surprise. I thought you thought we were a pop group. You know, pop." He says 'pop' in an almost condescending way towards the disposable nature of pop music, light years away from the overtly pop songwriter he'd purport to be in a decade. He continues, "We'd like to do something from our first album. Would you like that?" Someone in the audience promptly shouts out for Liar. "No, Liar will come later on. We won't go away without that. Right now we'd like to do Son And Daughter."
A silent reel-to-reel video (apparently in black and white) of the concert exists, and is said to include backstage footage from before the show. The reels sold at a fan club convention in Rotterdam in the 1990s, and its contents have yet to emerge.
More pictures from this show can be seen in a Dutch book called "Voor Queen En Vaderland" by Edger Hamer. It has concert reviews, commentary by friends and Dutch artists, and a general focus on the relationship between the band and the Netherlands, a nation that truly embraced the band over the years.
