Recipes for Love and Murder — first thoughts
Recipes for Love and Murder — first thoughts
I only noticed Recipes for Love and Murder recently, so thought I’d give episode 1, Bereft Woman, a watch. I’m not completely hooked, but will watch a couple more while I make up my mind. I have to say the first quarter or so left me unsure, but the tone changed and the potential started to show. What is it about? Tannie Maria writes recipes for the local paper, under the lead of Hattie Wilson…

Invictus (2009)

Plot: As he bids to unite his country following apartheid, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) sees the forthcoming Rugby World Cup as a chance to build bridges through sporting success; much to the bemusement of captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) and his mostly white team of also-rans.

Review: Invictus is a heart-warming tale of supporting success against the odds inspiring a country. Although people might question its historical accuracy, there can be no doubt its heart is in the right place.
Freeman had long wanted to play the South African president, and although he never got the chance for a full life story, Clint Eastwood gave him the chance to play an older Mandela. That is perfect for Freeman though, a man who always carries himself with such dignity and class embodies the elder statesman perfectly. It also captures Mandela’s force of personality, as he seems to be on a one-man mission to win South Africa the World Cup. Traditionally supported by just the white population, Mandela sees their success as a chance to bring down divides between black and white, and see his country unite behind a common cause.
While Eastwood might have taken the story and made it a saccharine-sweet version (witness the thin sub-plot about the Pienaar’s becoming warmer and kinder to their housekeeper), there are a few who could learn from the approach. Raking over the past, pointing fingers and assigning blame solves nothing. Mandela had to move a bitterly divided country forward, and he tried to do so with a mix of understanding and compassion, rather than trying to divide and rule. Though the film may not exactly been the most in-depth and insightful piece, there are still lessons to be learned.
It helps that the sport seems to be recreated more authentically than most movies - whether it is or isn’t. Eastwood doesn’t shy away from the grinding nature of the final and though a bit more depth would have been welcome, he doesn’t shirk the task of committing such a story to film either.

Morgan Freeman is Nelson Mandella in ‘Invictus’ on Netflix
Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandella as the newly-elected President of South Africa in Invictus (2009), Clint Eastwood’s reverent tribute to Nelson Mandella’s efforts to unite post-apartheid South Africa. This isn’t a biography of Mandella. Audiences come to the film with the understanding that Nelson Mandella spent 24 years in prison for protesting South Africa’s apartheid regime before taking…
