The funny thing about ppl from music subcultures (ie. punk, goth) being accused of "gatekeeping" for saying you need to listen to the music to be a part of that subculture is that whenever you go to those people's blogs they're always recommending albums and bands for ppl to listen to and actually get into the subculture but that's apparently too hard and real punk is tswift or whatever

Back in the 90s in the UK, one of our teenage rituals was recording the top 40 charts every Sunday afternoon from Radio 1 onto a cassette tape. We'd put in so much effort to avoid having the DJ talk over the songs, but inevitably, he'd start just before the song ended. We'd all be silently cursing (so our parents wouldn't hear), wishing we could yell at the DJ, "Stop fucking talking!" all to get a clear version of the song but ultimately failing. LOL I wonder, is there a similar experience in the USA? Was there something many of you did as kids that people from coast to coast could relate to and say, "Hey, I did that too!"

Someone once posted that your taste in music ends around the time you're in high school/college, and I thought that was bullshit until I looked at every Billboard Top 100 list since 1990. I started recognizing titles in the mid-90s (right before I was born) and stopped recognizing them in the mid-2010s (right smack dab in the middle of my college years)

Will never understand why Spotify keeps trying to advertise Top 40/UK Charts playlists to me, like who tunes into Spotify specifically to listen to a playlist of Top 40 music? You mean the same Top 40 music that is on every radio station 24/7? The same Top 40 music that is forced into your eardrums ad nauseum, to the point where even if you liked the music to begin with, it very soon becomes meaningless and also oddly rage-inducing? The same Top 40 music I trip over on my way out of the house every morning? The same Top 40 hits that break into my brain and beat my sub-consciousness into submission if I so much as LOOK at a device capable of playing music? That Top 40 music? Who on earth needs it to be advertised to them? The sort of people who need a signpost to tell them they're on planet earth?
