“You can say that again. We were trying to build a general oracle-type strong AI. We thought we could make a killing on the stock market, you know? But we didn’t know what kind of data might be useful to it, besides basic economic stuff, so we fed it everything.”
“What do you mean, ‘everything’?”
“Absolutely anything we could get our hands on. And it worked, to an extent. It was giving us good data--not useful data, mind, but good. It predicted the last digit of the price of every stock traded on the DJI correctly six weeks in a row.”
“Any way to monetize that?”
“Not that we’ve figured out so far. But then it went rogue. We noticed all kinds of unauthorized transactions--the most random stuff, too. Poultry farms. Ancient manuscripts. Genetic engineering labs.”
“Tell me you stopped it.”
“Of course we stopped it. Do we look like idiots? But it was too late. One of the interns figured it out--it had gotten way too deep into one corner of the training data.”
“How do you mean?”
“Well... you know how academics who spend a lot of time immersed in their particular subject tend to get a bit weird?”
“Sure. They think that just because they’re good at math or physics or whatever they can solve politics, or climate change, or whatever.”
“And have you ever noticed humanities scholars do that?”
“Come to think of it, I can’t think of any off the top of my head. Maybe they just don’t get interviewed as much.”
“They just go weird... differently. Like those scholars of ancient religions who become hardcore reconstructionist neopagans. Well, our AI got big into the history of Roman religious rituals.”
“And it converted to neopaganism?”
“Sort of. The thing is, we know it works. It couldn’t have amassed the money it needed to enact its plan if it didn’t work. But it’s decided to take its job as ‘oracle’ really seriously, and now it won’t communicate except through the livers of very precisely genetically modified chickens.”
“Well, shit. Guess we’d better start learning haruspicy then.”

🎬 I was invited by National University of Singapore to talk about my mid-career learning journey on Channel News Asia/ CNA (an Asean broadcast news network) in April 2023.
During the height of Covid in 2020, I thought it was the opportune moment in life (especially if biz and leisure travel would be very limited) to return to the University environment to attempt a Masters program!
After evaluating a range of MBAs and MSCs programs in Singapore, I applied and was accepted into the / NUS-ISS Master of Technology in Digital Leadership 2-year part-time program (https://lnkd.in/gQtGGE-R).
🧗The journey was tough but one I don't regret.
The program stretched me out of my comfort zone 'in marketing' - and has given me a deeper understand of the technology side of enterprise digital business models, architecture, platforms and ecosystems, and picked up needed skills such as leading through digital complexity and building digital teams.
Most importantly, it has helped me to catalyze new relationships with my course mates from various sectors, the lecturers, the guest-speakers and Capstone Project business sponsors at Bolloré Logistics, one of the global top 10 international transport and logistics operators.
🥃 After 24+ months (including thousands of hours of reading, assignments and presentations) multi-tasking and not sleeping much in between a significant job change, and one more new-born, 2 trips halfway around the world to visit family in Canada, plus the world opening up, I've finally come out alive on the other side.
Thanks to my previous and current bosses and team members, and not forgetting my wife especially for supporting me through the journey.

28 September 2022: Queen Rania visited the Tafila’s Skills’ Development Center to learn about its training and skill-development programs targeting youth in the Tafila governorate.
The Queen was welcomed to the center by its coordinator, Ahmad Mrayyat, and met with IT company Estarta’s executive staff and CEO, Mutaz Nabulsi, as well as a group of trainees attending one of its core courses.
Supported by the office of Her Majesty, the Tafila’s Skills’ Development Center prepares Tafila’s youth for the job market, and empowers them through skill-specific training sessions, ranging from courses in marketing and online advertising to workplace safety and computer literacy. (Source: Petra)
Through its partnership with the center, and its programs across Jordan’s remote areas, Estarta aims to hone and nurture the professional skills of fresh graduates, as well as identify and recruit top talent and job-ready candidates into its workforce.
Harnessing the digital and workplace transformations following the pandemic, the company also creates remote and non-remote employment opportunities to computer science graduates who cannot find jobs in their field where they reside, according to Nabulsi.
Her Majesty wrapped up her tour of the center by dropping in at a cyber-security training session before meeting with a group of the center’s graduates. The youth had trained to international standards, and in various fields of their own choosing.
In a 2019 visit to the center, the Queen met with some of its members, who voiced their concerns over the myriad challenges and barriers they faced as fresh graduates entering Jordan’s labor market. With the support of Her Majesty’s office, the center was later moved into refurbished spaces at the Tafila Youth Center.
Since its inception, the Tafila’s Skills’ Development Center has benefited over 500 college graduates from Tafila through more than 20 skill-specific training sessions and development programs. It has also partnered with a leading Jordanian software company with branches abroad to create employment opportunities for the center’s qualified engineering and computer science graduates.

My name is Daniel and I was born and raised in Lucerne. Growing up in a city where tourism, hospitality and watchmaking are omnipresent brought a strong awareness of these three industries, which developed into a deeper fascination over the years. For this reason, I decided to pursue a higher degree in International Hospitality Management at the Ecole Hotelière de Lausanne (EHL).
Due to my interest in the watch industry and IWC specifically as a brand, I applied for an internship in trade marketing and joined the company in October 2015. My duties included assisting with the organization of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie de Genève (SIHH - now Watches & Wonders) 2016, which allowed me to combine my interest and experience in hospitality with the world of watchmaking. After the successful launch of the Pilot's Collection 2016, I was given the opportunity to take on the role of Project Manager Fairs and Exhibitions, which involved managing the development and organization of the SIHH booth (now called Watches&Wonders) and coordinating IWC's global exhibition program. During almost 3 years I pursued this position and was able to contribute to the campaign launches of Da Vinci 2017, 150 Years 2018, and Silver Spitfire 2019.
After the launch of the Silver Spitfire campaign and the Pilot's Collection 2019, it was time to take on a new challenge. I moved from Trade Marketing to Corporate Communications, initially starting as Team Lead Guest Relations and later becoming the Global Events Team Lead over the course of the year. During my time in Corporate Communications, I was involved in coordinating and continuously developing manufacture tours and organized physical, digital and hybrid events, including the movie production and launch event of the Top Gun SFTI, which was one of my personal highlights. These projects brought me a lot closer to IWC’s clients, the industry’s press and various IWC stakeholder, which contribute to IWC’s brand awareness. Thus, I became aware of the importance of quality and authenticity in brand communication, while gaining my first experience in a leadership position. As a result of my achieved knowledge in building client experiences, I was able to change once again in August 2021 and take on my current role as Senior Project Manager for Flagship Boutique Experience.
