The first major solo museum presentation of fourth-generation Navajo weaver Melissa Cody (b. 1983, No Water Mesa, Arizona) spans the last decade of her practice, showcasing over 30 weavings and a major new work produced for the exhibition. Using long-established weaving techniques and incorporating new digital technologies, Cody assembles and reimagines popular patterns into sophisticated geometric overlays, incorporating atypical dyes and fibers. Her tapestries carry forward the methods of Navajo Germantown weaving, which developed out of the wool and blankets that were made in Germantown, Pennsylvania and supplied by the US government to the Navajo people during the forced expulsion from their territories in the mid-1800s. During this period, the rationed blankets were taken apart and the yarn was used to make new textiles, a practice of reclamation which became the source of the movement. While acknowledging this history and working on a traditional Navajo loom, Cody’s masterful works exercise experimental palettes and patterns that animate through reinvention, reframing traditions as cycles of evolution. Melissa Cody is a Navajo/Diné textile artist and enrolled member of the Navajo/Diné nation. Cody grew up on a Navajo Reservation in Leupp, Arizona and received a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts and Museum Studies from Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe. Her work has been featured in The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia (2022); Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR (2021); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (2019–2020); Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff (2019); SITE Santa Fe (2018–19); Ingham Chapman Gallery, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque (2018); Navajo Nation Museum, Window Rock (2018); and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe (2017–18). Cody’s works are in the collections of the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; and The Autry National Center, Los Angeles. In 2020, she earned the Brandford/Elliott Award for Excellence in Fiber Art.

For years, a mysterious figure who goes by the handle Stern led the Trickbot ransomware gang and evaded identification—even as other members of the group were outed in leaks and unmasked. This week German authorities revealed, without much fanfare, who they believe that enigmatic hacker kingpin to be: Vitaly Nikolaevich Kovalev, a 36-year-old Russian man who remains at large in his home country.
Closer to home, WIRED revealed that Customs and Border Protection has mouth-swabbed 133,000 migrant children and teenagers to collect their DNA and uploaded their genetic data into a national criminal database used by local, state, and federal law enforcement. As the Trump administration’s migrant crackdown continues, often justified through invocations of crime and terrorism, WIRED also uncovered evidence that ties a Swedish far-right mixed-martial-arts tournament to an American neo-Nazi “fight club” based in California.
For those seeking to evade the US government surveillance, we offered tips about more private alternatives to US-based web browsing, email, and search tools. And we assembled a more general guide to protecting yourself from surveillance and hacking, based on questions our senior writer Matt Burgess received in a Reddit Ask Me Anything.
But that's not all. Each week, we round up the security and privacy news we didn't cover in depth ourselves. Click the headlines to read the full stories. And stay safe out there.
A Hacker May Have Deepfaked Trump’s Chief of Staff in a Phishing Campaign
The FBI is investigating who impersonated Susie Wiles, the Trump White House’s chief of staff and one of the president’s closest advisers, in a series of fraudulent messages and calls to high-profile Republican political figures and business executives, The Wall Street Journal reported. Government officials and authorities involved in the probe say the spear-phishing messages and calls appear to have targeted individuals on Wiles’ contact list, and Wiles has reportedly told colleagues that her personal phone was hacked to gain access to those contacts.
Despite Wiles’ reported claim of having her device hacked, it remains unconfirmed whether this was actually how attackers identified Wiles’ associates. It would also be possible to assemble such a target list from a combination of publicly available information and data sold by gray-market brokers.
“It's an embarrassing level of security awareness. You cannot convince me they actually did their security trainings,” says Jake Williams, a former NSA hacker and vice president of research and development at Hunter Strategy. “This is the type of garden-variety social engineering that everyone can end up dealing with these days, and certainly top government officials should be expecting it.”
In some cases, the targets received not just text messages but phone calls that impersonated Wiles’ voice, and some government officials believe the calls may have used artificial intelligence tools to fake Wiles’ voice. If so, that would make the incident one of the most significant cases yet of so-called deepfake software being used in a phishing attempt.
It’s not yet clear how Wiles’ phone might have been hacked, but the FBI has ruled out involvement by a foreign nation in the impersonation campaign, the bureau reportedly told White House officials. In fact, while some of the impersonation attempts appeared to have political goals—a member of Congress, for instance, was asked to assemble a list of people Trump might pardon—in at least one other case the impersonator tried to trick a target into setting up a cash transfer. That attempt at a money grab suggests that the spoofing campaign may be less of an espionage operation than a run-of-the-mill cybercriminal fraud scheme, albeit one with a very high-level target.
“There’s an argument here for using something like Signal—yes, the irony—or another messaging platform that offers an independent form of authentication if users want to validate who they’re talking to,” Hunter Strategy's Williams says. “The key thing as always is for government officials to be using vetted tools and following all federally mandated protocols rather than just winging it on their own devices.”
Iranian Man Behind Baltimore Ransomware Attack Pleads Guilty
The 2019 ransomware attack against the city government of Baltimore represents one of the worst municipal cybersecurity disasters on record, paralyzing city services for months and costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. Now the Department of Justice has unexpectedly revealed that it arrested one of the hackers behind that attack, 37-year-old Sina Gholinejad, in North Carolina last January, and that he has pleaded guilty in court. Gholinejad has admitted to being involved in the larger Robbinhood ransomware campaign that hit other targets, including the cities of Greenville, North Carolina, and Yonkers, New York. It’s still far from clear how Gholinejad was identified or why he traveled from Iran to the US, given that most ransomware criminals are careful to remain in countries that don’t have extradition agreements with the US government and are thus beyond US law enforcement’s reach. Indeed, the indictment against him names several unnamed co-conspirators who may be still at large in Iran.
Russia’s Nuclear Blueprints Exposed in Huge Document Leak
More than 2 million documents left exposed in a public database have revealed Russia’s nuclear weapons facilities in unprecedented levels of detail, according to reporting this week by Danish media outlet Danwatch and Germany’s Der Spiegel. Reporters examined the huge trove of documents relating to Russian military procurement—as Russian authorities slowly restricted access—and found blueprints for nuclear facilities across the country. Experts called the leak an unparalleled breach of Russia’s nuclear security, with the data potentially being incredibly useful for foreign governments and intelligence services.
The documents show how Russia’s nuclear facilities have been rebuilt in recent years, where new facilities have been created, detailed site plans including the locations of barracks and watchtowers, and the locations of underground tunnels connecting buildings. There are descriptions of IT systems and security systems, including information on surveillance cameras, electric fences being used, and the alarm systems in place. “It’s written explicitly where the control rooms are located, and which buildings are connected to each other via underground tunnels,” Danwatch reports.
Cops Used License Plate Recognition Cameras in Search for Woman Who Got an Abortion
License-plate-recognition cameras are creating huge databases of people’s movements across America—capturing where and when cars are traveling. For years there have been concerns that the cameras could be weaponized by law enforcement officials or private investigators and turned against those seeking abortions or providing abortion-related care. Officials from Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in Texas—where nearly all abortions are illegal—searched 83,000 Flock license-plate reader cameras at the start of this month while looking for a woman they claim had a self-administered abortion, 404 Media reported this week.
Sheriff Adam King said that the officials weren’t trying to “block her from leaving the state” and were searching for the woman as her family was concerned about her safety. However, experts say that conducting a search across the entire United States shows the sprawling dragnet of license-plate-reader cameras and highlights how those seeking abortions can be tracked. “The idea that the police are actively tracking the location of women they believe have had self-administered abortions under the guise of ‘safety’ does not make me feel any better about this kind of surveillance,” Eva Galperin, director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation told 404 Media.
Investment Scam Company Linked to $200 Million in Losses Sanctioned by US Government
Philippines-based company Funnull Technology and its boss, Liu Lizhi, have been sanctioned by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control for their links to investment and romance scams, which are often referred to as “pig-butchering” scams. “Funnull has directly facilitated several of these schemes, resulting in over $200 million in US victim-reported losses,” OFAC said in a statement announcing the sanctions. The company purchases IP addresses from major cloud service providers and then sells them to cybercriminals who could use them to host scam websites—OFAC says Funnull is “linked to the majority” of investment scam websites reported to the FBI. In January independent cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs detailed how Funnull was abusing Amazon’s and Microsoft’s cloud services.

introducing the general information about one christoph dowell-- this will be a post detailing what the public knowledge on him is, and it'll also talk semi-public/private aaand private details, as well! please consider this post in a state of perpetual development.
PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE ON "JOHN ROE": (this is knowledge anyone can access, learn, andor know.)
do not call him by his actual, government name while he's on the job-- anonymity is of the utmost importance in his line of work. for this reason, christoph'll most likely introduce himself to others as john roe. personally, i don't really care too much what the narration refers to him as (this is mostly to avoid confusion.) but, in terms of what the actual muse knows, they'll know him as john roe only.
you can employ him on the deep web, while using the ever-popular tor browser. there is an entire network of assassins that christoph is affiliated with, and he's usually one of the first faces you'll see.
if you are in need of his services, be prepared to pay a hefty amount. he is not cheap, doesn't accept any kind of bartering, and always takes cash before the hit. the process itself is pretty simple; all you do is fill out the provided form and wait for a response. christoph usually establishes contact in a day or two, after the information is processed by and communicated through his info broker. by then, payment is required before the job, done through an external service his broker graciously "offers".
the network he is apart of is known only as the assassin's bureau, and it does have a base of operation. somewhere. it's underground, at least.
he is exceptionally hard to kill. and even more-so, he is obnoxiously and deeply resourceful. anything that is within reach, he can and will turn into a weapon-- this is one of many reasons he's a popular choice.
loves smoking luxury cigars as a civilian but smokes cheap, gas station cigarettes while on the job.
as a civilian, he's comfortably rich and acts accordingly. while not outright flaunting his luxury and privilege, christoph is the proud owner of more than just a few gucci-brand accessories-- these primarily revolve around lighters, cigar cases, shoes, and a random spread of clothing. with that in mind, yes, his favorite luxury brand is gucci. his second favorite is versace. honorable mentions include dior, hermès, and fendi.
resides in dallas, texas. feel free to say hi if you see him!
SEMI-PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE ON "JOHN ROE": (this is information those within the bureau, be it as an employee or employer, would know.)
his first name is christoph, but assassin etiquette dictates that nobody refers to their fellow assassin as their actual name. their code name/alias suffices, unless they happen to cross paths within the underground circuit.
his first hit was an absolute fucking disaster, and it's a miracle he managed to kill the guy in the first place. many consider it a fluke, but christoph's more than managed to prove that he is, in fact, the guy.
there is no real "ranking" system within the bureau, but christoph is considered a top contender within the circuit regardless. the website automatically filters based off of perceived popularity, with "john roe" being spotted in the first-to-second rows on the first page consistently. however... if you were to filter based off of affordability, he's going to be in the waaaay back. his fellow assassins love giving him (sometimes playful, sometimes legitimate.) shit about this, and he always has a snappy comeback such as, "i make it worth it, though! my client always get th'results they want."
SEMI-PRIVATE KNOWLEDGE ON CHRISTOPH DOWELL: (this is generalized information, disregarding the assassin world, that certain individuals would know about christoph, within reason.)
those supernaturally inclined are capable of gathering that christoph simply isn't human. to what extent, however, depends on their own perception skills and what amount of "tells" christoph himself chooses to give. most of the time, the default assumption seems to be zombie or reanimated.
anyone who is aware of what a ghoul is will most likely be aware of how one is made: somebody fucked up a satanic ritual somewhere, somehow. ghouls are a byproduct of a ritual gone awry, always being killed after the intended sacrifice was already brought forth and killed first.
hey, why the hell can he still walk around with his head cut clean off of his neck? and oh my god, why is he asking me for some duct tape and to "come help him for a sec"?
john roe obviously isn't his real name, but he'll take a while to actually reveal his name. and when he does, he refuses to be called "chris"-- it's a long story, weigh down by some heavy baggage and that's as much as he'll disclose.
he likes men. this will seem redundant, but he loves reminding people. in addition to this, he's also married and wears the wedding ring proudly, flashing it occasionally should the opportunity arise.
he prefers smoking luxury-brand cigars, sitting out in his private suite's pool, and losing five of the ten rounds of a video game he's supposed to be really good at. he does, in fact, have a high-end gaming computer, and he maintains regular upkeep on it. tallying up its current worth, it's somewhere in the 4000-to-5000 american dollar range. he loves that machine.
speaking of said suite, it's actually an apartment on the topmost floor of the complex. it's one of those places that as soon as you set foot inside, you just know the owner is made entirely out of nothing but money.
actually has a semi-decent landlord, but it's mostly because said landlord is a bit of an eccentric guy and christoph matches his energy quite well.
he occasionally dabbles in drag as an art form, every so often performing at nearby nightclubs under the pseudonym scab. his style mostly resembled that of genderfuck and embraced said nature. his performances are normally well-received, being noted as high-energy and crowd-focused. in spite of this, he rarely stayed after the show and would only linger behind-the-scenes for as long as he was required before leaving. this is something both the regulars and club has simply accepted about him.
PRIVATE KNOWLEDGE OF CHRISTOPH DOWELL: (this is information those christoph trusts fully would know, including his family, husband, and similar. if this wasn't discussed between us privately or revealed to your muse personally, there will be ZERO access to this information.)
he struggled with commitment, with his marriage to one leontios dowell (he took his surname, isn't that just the sweetest thing?) being christoph's first, real committed relationship in, well, years. christoph, prior to, would partake in the occasional one-night stand and ensured it stayed as casual as possible.
his first concert was an avril lavigne concert. second was for christina aguilera. he actually loved both experiences and would go again if ever given the chance.
fought for his absolute goddamn life against his husband's sister, aelita, over one of the weirdest misunderstandings ever (long story.) and involved her smashing a tv over his head. he still hasn't forgiven her for that.
with regards to his trauma, only his family (and this does include his husband.) are aware of the details. but even then... christoph is still stingy on the full story, only recently revealing it in full to leontios and only leontios.

Private equity firms are increasingly profiting from cleaning up climate disasters in the US, while failing to better protect workers and often also investing in the fossil fuels that are causing the climate emergency, new research has found.
The demand for skilled disaster restoration or resilience workers, who are mostly immigrants and refugees from Latin America and Asia, is soaring as greenhouse gases released by burning fossil fuels heat the planet, provoking more destructive storms, floods and wildfires.
As the industry has become more profitable, at least 72 companies that specialize in disaster cleanups and restoration have been acquired by private equity firms since 2020, according to the research, by the Private Equity Stakeholder Project (PSEP) and Resilience Force, a labor rights organization with thousands of members.
Wage theft, lack of protective clothing, and other unsafe conditions are rampant across the industry at the expense of workers, communities and climate, according to the report, Private Equity Profits from Disasters, shared exclusively with the Guardian.
At risk are tens of thousands of resilience workers, traveling from disaster to disaster cleaning up and rebuilding American communities while facing hazards such as unstable buildings, ash and other toxins, and water-borne diseases.
Researchers found that an increasingly complex web of franchises, contractors and subcontractors, insurance providers, labor brokers and agencies and mostly temporary jobs makes it difficult for workers to know who is ultimately accountable for violations.
“Disasters have become more intense and destructive, and rebuilding has become more profitable. As the money started pouring in, companies started consolidating, and private equity started circling and buying up these companies,” said Saket Soni, director of Resilience Force. “Wage theft and health and safety violations are deeply endemic … and private equity is failing to establish higher standards.”
Osha, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, recorded 194 violations at private-equity owned restoration companies and their franchises between January 2015 and January 2022, the report found.
Most violations were classified as serious, and included failures to protect workers from asbestos, respiratory problems and falls. (The true number of health and safety violations is likely to be higher given the small number of Osha compliance officers).
It is impossible to say precisely what proportion of the disaster workforce is currently controlled by private equity, but acquisitions are gathering pace, with 14 in the first six months of this year compared to 13 during the entire course of 2020. Acquisitions included companies from 28 states, but most were in Florida and Texas – states hit by multiple billion-dollar climate disasters in recent years.
“This is the latest example of a disturbing trend where we see private equity coming into industries where there is a lot of money – and indeed a lot of federal investment – in order to pad their pockets by cutting costs,” said the Democratic congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. “This is already a dangerous industry … cutting costs will cut quality, and increase the threats to essential workers – who are already extremely vulnerable to greedy employers. Those who put up the money, in this case private equity, are ultimately responsible.”
Overall, the number and cost of weather and climate disasters in the US is rising due to a combination of population growth, development and the influence of human-caused global heating on extreme events like floods, drought and fires. Over the past seven years (2016 to 2022), 122 separate billion-dollar disasters have killed at least 5,000 people and cost more than $1tn in damage, according to data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa).
Historically, the disaster restoration industry was made up of smaller, independent businesses handling local projects. But after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, private equity firms saw an opportunity to consolidate the market by buying up smaller companies, and some estimates value the US restoration industry as high as $200bn. The Restoration Industry Association, whose board includes three private equity executives, did not respond to the Guardian.
Taxpayer dollars increasingly pay for restoration costs – involving public buildings like schools and hospitals, and for folks without insurance. Yet the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Fema, does not attach mandatory labor or health and safety standards to its payouts, while private equity firms have a track record in cost cutting to maximize profits.
Tumblr media
Private equity refers to an opaque form of private financing in which funds and investors buy and restructure companies, including troubled businesses and real estate, using money from wealthy individuals and institutional investors such as university endowments and state employee pension funds.
In recent years, some private equity firms have become major greenhouse gas polluters, often acquiring risky oil, gas and coal projects with minimal public scrutiny or regulatory oversight – which means firefighters, nurses and teachers have little way of knowing if their retirement nest egg is financing police surveillance equipment, disaster companies or leaky pipelines.
Researchers found a third of the private equity companies with disaster restoration company investments are also backing fossil fuel-linked projects – ostensibly profiting from the cause and effect of the climate emergency.
The Blackstone Group, the world’s largest private equity firm, which manages over $1tn, backs 21 energy companies, of which 52% are fossil-fuel projects. In 2020, Blackstone’s power plants produced 18.1m metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere – equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 4m gas-powered vehicles.
Blackstone’s institutional investors include Los Angeles, Maine, Arizona, North Carolina, Texas, New York state and Oregon public sector worker pensions.
In March 2019, Blackstone acquired a majority share in Servpro Industries, a damage restoration company with more than 2,000 independently owned and operated franchises across the US and Canada. Servpro franchises helped with restoration efforts after Hurricanes Harvey, Matthew and Sandy – some of the most devastating storms to hit the US mainland in recent years.
Higher temperatures and sea level rise caused by burning fossil fuels are making storms more intense and destructive.
In Massachusetts, a Servpro franchise in 2022 settled claims by the state that its restoration work at an elementary school led to asbestos contamination, forcing the school to close for months. In November 2019, a Servpro franchise in Boynton Beach, Florida, was forced to pay more $200,000 in back wages to almost 150 restoration workers after a department of labor investigation.
In another example the commercial restoration firm BlueSky, which operates in more than 40 states, is owned by two private equity companies including Partners Group, whose portfolio also includes gas pipeline companies in the US and Europe.
“Firms like Blackstone are using the public’s money to personally profit off both sides of disasters,” said Azani Creeks, PESP research coordinator and co-author of the report.
“Public employees have a right to know that their pension dollars are being used to purchase fossil-fuel plants that are contributing to climate disasters – and companies that profit off of these very disasters, most often off the backs of wage workers with little health and safety protections.”
Tumblr media
A Blackstone spokesperson rejected the report’s findings as “cherry-picking”, and said that some of the cases related to matters prior to their investment – and that there was no evidence that the alleged shortcomings were related to private equity ownership.
“As a franchisor, Servpro Industries does not control or direct the operations of its independent local franchises, nor does it employ their workers … Since Blackstone’s investment, the company has expanded the training resources available to its franchisees – including worker safety related to Osha compliance and use of personal protective equipment, among other areas – and continually evaluates ways to further expand and enhance those efforts.”
Blackstone had invested more than $20bn in the energy transition, the spokesperson said: “Legacy exploration and production investments today total less than 1% of our overall fair market value portfolio.”
According to the 2022 state of the industry report, the biggest issues facing the disaster restoration industry is finding – and retaining – skilled workers, and increasing wages for certified employees.
Information about the disaster workforce is limited, but more than 100,000 people are estimated to work occasionally or full time in the industry, according to Resilience Force. Most workers are concentrated in southern states prone to natural disasters like Louisiana, Texas and Florida, but are often deployed thousands of miles away for weeks or months at a time. It is a male-dominated industry, but also includes thousands of women, with Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, India and the Philippines among some of the most common countries of origin.
While the work is predominantly done by immigrants who are often undocumented or have temporary residency status, the workforce also includes current and ex-incarcerated people and US-born people of color – also groups which have historically faced discrimination and poor working conditions.
In one case, migrant workers who helped rebuild luxury hotels destroyed by Hurricane Irma in Florida Keys in 2017, were forced to sue Cotton Commercial, acquired by the private equity firm Sun Capital in 2020, and a temp agency to recover more than $280,000 in back pay and damages.
A spokesperson for Cotton said: “All Cotton contracts include provisions on subcontractors’ responsibility for payment to their personnel in accordance with all applicable employment laws and regulations, as well as strict safety requirements.”
The need for climate resilience workers is likely to continue rising, and next month Jayapal will re-introduce the 2022 Climate Resilience Workforce Act which would help create a well-trained, fairly paid workforce to help the US prepare for the climate emergency – and ease the transition to a green economy.
Soni, the director of Resilience Force, said: “Disaster restoration is a public good, and we need a strong sustainable workforce as disasters increase. Many people deeply love the work and are dedicated … but the work gets more dangerous year after year, because there are no standards. We’re depleting the workforce when we ought to be building it.”

The Significance of Professional Web Design Services in Texas for Small Businesses
Today, in the online community, a company without a website is like having a store that has no front door. When you have a small shop in Houston, an attorney's office in Austin, or a pastry shop in Dallas, your site is one of the best weapons to draw people in and maintain them. This is why more and more companies are turning towards professional web development firms in Texas to create websites that actually pay off for them.
First Impressions Last
Tumblr media
Your website is usually the initial impression clients have of you. Within a matter of seconds, visitors choose to stay or depart depending on how your site looks and feels. A busy, dated, or confusing design will show them the door, regardless of how great your products and services are. Texas web design businesses make sure your site not only looks great but is simple to use, fast to load, and responsive.
A Functional Website That Functions For You
Other than appearance, a successful site must also be a utility for your company. It should be done on purpose. If you would like to take orders online, generate leads, or schedule appointments, your site should make that happen. Proper web design solutions in Texas build sites that are for your company's purpose. They customize features such as contact forms, shopping carts, scheduling calendars, and much more to meet your own purposes and ensure that you run smoothly.
Establishing Trust with Visitors
Good information, professional web design, and consistency in your branding build that trust. Credibility also results from a well-designed site. Visitors tend to compare several businesses before making a decision, and how well your site is designed can influence them to make a final decision. Most small businesses don't value this element, but experienced web design services in Texas know how to build that trusted online presence.
Local Experts Know Local Needs
Texas is a large state with enormous market differences and customer needs. A cookie cutter does not always work here. Regional web design firms know the business landscape and local populace. They are more likely to develop a message and a look that resonate with your audience. Doing business with Texas web design firms also means better communication, quicker response time, and the advantage of someone who knows the area's idiosyncratic business culture.
Support and Expansion
A fantastic website is never truly completed. As your business expands, your site must expand as well. You may need to introduce additional services, begin a blog, or begin selling items online. When you cooperate with reliable web design services in Texas, you receive continuous support.
If you are a small business owner in Texas who wants to enhance your web presence, the moment has come to seek professional assistance. KS Marketing Studio is one of the top Texas web design firms, providing custom websites that are visually appealing as well as effective. Focused on assisting small businesses in their growth, they cover everything from web design and branding to social media and full-service marketing. KS Marketing Studio removes the guesswork from marketing and empowers you to get heard in a busy marketplace.

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️
Yesterday Kim and I were looking at homes on acreage. We’re hoping to find our final home and have enough land our kids could build on it if they want to. It’ll also be the perfect place to setup for the coming zombie apocalypse! 🧟‍♂️
Hope you enjoy the links.
Aisha Nyandoro, Ph.D. • Forbes
You come into a lot of money suddenly, and it’s like you’ve won the lottery. I had to think a lot about, “what is the purpose of money?” Why do we have money, and how much money is enough? The more I looked at it, the more I thought the money should be actually out there working to make the world better in some form. I didn’t see the purpose of holding on to a bunch of wealth if it’s not doing anything.
There are some extremely wealthy people who are empathetic to the human condition and want to help. See, not all of them are building dick shaped rockets or trying to take over the United States. 👍🏼
Ben McCarthy
For a long while, I’ve felt that the design of iOS is too top heavy. While our phones seem to grow larger every year, our hands do not and so interface elements are pulled ever further out of reach.
Reading tealeaves is not my thing any longer, but this is a really great take on what the next version of iOS may hold for us. 👩‍🎨
Ruben Cagnie • Toast Technology
At Toast, we believe that GraphQL is the right technology to build efficient web and mobile applications.
I know a lot of shops really love GraphQL for its flexibility, but I’ve never had the pleasure of working with it. It is my understanding Twitter was using GraphQL for the updated Twitter API that Space Karen scrapped.
Sujita Sinha
In a groundbreaking step for the future of construction, the first-ever 3D-printed Starbucks is taking shape in Brownsville, Texas.
How cool is that? I wish I could’ve seen the machine during the process. You can see the layers in the pictures and see a very visible seam or rib where it came together. Overall it’s extremely cool and it’s supposed to be less expensive than traditional construction. I hope these become options for young folks getting their first home.
Volt, Paper, Scissors
This magical DIY Book Lamp teaches kids about creativity and electronics. It combines paper crafting and paper circuits using conductive tape. The materials used are simple, but the result is truly fascinating.
This could be a really fun project for me and my grandchildren.
L. Jeffrey Zeldman
DESIGN WAS so much easier before I had clients. I assigned myself projects with no requirements, no schedule, no budget, no constraints. By most definitions, what I did wasn’t even design—except that it ended up creating new things, some of which still exist on the web.
This is how I’d imagine most indie software developers feel. I know when I work on Stream or RxCalc or Arrgly or [top sekret project] I find the most joy there because I don’t have to worry about someone looking over my shoulder to make sure I’m coding thing the proper way. I’m just coding, crafting an application the way I see it. I don’t have to use all these different latest creates frameworks or new patterns. I can be my curmudgeonly self and use tried and true methods of old because I’m the only one who needs to worry about it. 😃
Skip Rhudy • Texas Observer
I’ve got a post-graduate certificate in artificial intelligence (AI). I’m also an author, and I believe writers and publishers should not use AI in publishing. So that’s why I was disturbed when a reviewer asked if I had used AI in writing my recent coming-of-age novel, Under the Gulf Coast Sun.
I won’t go as far to say you should never use AI, even though I won’t on my personal projects, but you need to understand your craft so you can make an educated decision about the quality of any code you use from a third party. You do this with third party code you get from whatever packages you use, right? Why should AI be any different. In fact AI generated code should get more scrutiny than human written code. Don’t vibe your way to poor quality. 🌹
Tom Warren • The Verge
Nvidia’s GPU drivers have been a disaster over the past four months. It all started when Nvidia released its drivers for the RTX 50-series cards in January, and introduced black screen issues, game crashes, and general stability problems for new and existing graphics cards.
When I hear about something like this my brain always asks “I wonder if they rewrote the driver code.” That could definitely be a huge mistake. I don’t know if that’s what they did or if it was just rushed to get it to market but it’s not good to break something so many folks rely on. Software development is just plain difficult. All the best fixing your drivers, Nvidia!
Addy Osmani
Yes, AI-assisted development is transforming how we build software, but it’s not a free pass to abandon rigor, review, or craftsmanship. “Vibe coding” is not an excuse for low-quality work.
Ah, I mentioned this above. Check those outputs for accuracy and fix problems so you don’t get bit. ‘Nuff said.
Mark Andrews • WIRED
The Sakura might be Japan’s best-selling EV (indeed, strong demand led to Nissan having to pause sales in late 2022 because it had too many orders), but it has the potential to be far more than that. It is the EV that many city EV drivers have been crying out for.
This is a really cute little car that would be perfect for city dwellers. Heck, I drive one these to work and back daily if I could convince my wife I needed it. 🤣 As it is I work from home and need a truck for towing our camping trailer and hauling dirt and rock. (You’d be surprised how often we used to do that!)
Finally got a bunch of tattoos on my laptop. I ordered a case for it so I could keep my stickers and make it easier to cleanup the laptop when I have to turn it in. 😃
