Like a poor wayfarin' stranger that they speak about in song, I'm just a weary pilgrim tryin' to find what feels like home. Where that is, no one can tell me, am I doomed to ever roam? I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' on.

In 2005, Dolly Parton wrote a Grammy and Oscar nominated song, “Travelin’ Thru,” for the movie Transamerica. The movie is about a trans woman who goes on a road trip with her long-lost son. Dolly’s song “Travelin’ Thru” is literally about how Jesus loves everyone, including the characters in the movie. In her beautifully poetic lyrics, Dolly compares the spiritual journey of coming out and self-acceptance with being born again. She directly references the Bible as well as two earlier Gospel songs, “Wayfaring Stranger” and “I Am a Pilgrim.” Dolly said she wrote the song because of her status as an outsider and her belief that “It's all right to be who you are.”
My point is that, even before “Travelin’ Thru” 19 years ago, Dolly Parton has ALWAYS been an ally and a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. There have ALWAYS been Dolly Parton drag queens, and Dolly has ALWAYS loved and supported them. She has ALWAYS had queer fans, and she has ALWAYS loved us (yes, US. I’ve been a fan of Dolly all my life). The fact that some homophobes are just now discovering that Dolly Parton is an LGBTQ+ ally tells me they have not been paying attention, and they aren’t really fans of Dolly Parton or they would already know how she stands.
If you want to know what true Christian spirituality looks like, here it is, in just under 4 minutes:

Travelin’ Thru Again
I’ve been absent this blogging site for six years. I began it because our life, at the time, was a a bit…nomadic. Elizabeth, the boys, and I had moved from Atlanta to Boston in 2009; moved to Chicago in 2011; and moved to St Andrews in 2012, where we have been ever since. So in the summer of 2012, I began writing as a way to keep distant family and friends updated on where we were and what we were doing.
So here I am again to write about a new move for us. This coming summer, we will move to Waco, Texas, where Elizabeth will be the new Professor of Christian Scriptures at Truett Seminary at Baylor University (see https://www.baylor.edu/truett/news.php?action=story&story=231851). There is much to say about how her time at the University of St Andrews has formed and pushed her in the best possible ways, too much to express here. The time seems right, though, to transition back to the US, and the promise of helping to form women and men for ministry has been a career-long ambition for her. The boys, both at the University of Edinburgh, will stay put to finish university here. After that, we have only one hope for them, which is that they don’t follow in their parents’ vapour trail and remain a continent or two away from us. I will pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a Real Househusband of Waco.
I re-read my last blog post, which was not long after the summer of 2016 when all four of us first visited the US after having moved to the UK. It is notable to me for two reasons. The first reason is that I think that summer represented the end of those very difficult years that began in 2009. Seven years of moving, transition, hope, disappointment, recovery, relearning. The years after 2016 haven’t been devoid of struggle, to be sure, but the relentless interior and exterior chaos both had diminished.
The second reason that my last blog post is notable is for its reflection on who Elizabeth and I are as a couple. I mused a bit about following her around the world, and how, for us, it is right and good and obedient. So here we go again, six years hence.
The photo of us is a selfie that we took on our trip to Sorrento, Italy last October when we celebrated our twenty-fifth anniversary.

View of Chipola River from porch, Florida Memory, circa 1885, flickr I am very happy that a personal essay of mine, originally published in Cowboy Jamboree‘s Townes Van Zandt issue “Travelin’ Thru Townes,” was published today in The Journal of Radical Wonder on Medium. It is a brief exploration of what it means to be a creative person living with bipolar disorder and suicidal ideation. I am…

This song is a perfect example of what can come of a spur of the moment decision. Dylan and Cash had been friends since Cash’s performance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival, but had yet to collaborate due to an in house rivalry between Columbia’s Nashville and New York divisions- which handled the Country and Folk markets respectively- but with Dylan’s arrival in Nashville studio execs started making plans for scheduling the two together.
Ultimately, a chance recording scheduling flub brought them together: both Cash and Dylan were in house one day wanting to record “Girl from the North Country-“ a song Joan Baez had written for Dylan’s second album. Dylan, because he was unhappy with how it had sounded on the *Freewheelin’* album and Cash because he adored the song and wanted to put it on *Orange Blossom Special*. Studio producers figured, what the hell, and asked them if they’d rather do it together: they immediately agreed and music history would be made.
This rehearsal- the first of three takes before the version appearing on *Nashville Skyline*- was a nice addition to the *Travelin’ Thru* box set.

Goodbye little children, good night you handsome men, Farewell to all you ladies, and to all who knew me when. And I hope I see you down the road, you meant more than I knew, As I was travelin', travelin', travelin', travelin', travelin' through.
