Tig Notaro--Treefort Music Festival
Saturday Night, I had the pleasure of experiencing Tig Notaro at the Egyptian Theater in downtown Boise, as part of the Treefort Music Festival. Even though Treefort is a music festival, Tig is not a musician. The last 20 minutes of her set emphasized that. As part of her show, she played the piano (POORLY!) and made fun of herself and others as she did. She was, in a word, hilarious! Her comedy wandered through personal stories that were funny, inspiring, and personal.
She broached topics fearlessly in a moment in our country’s history where many of the subjects of her humor are being censored and bullied. The diminutive comedian stood in front of the crowd and invited us into personal aspects of her marriage, motherhood, and wandering thoughts which included fantasies of mustached firemen and the disparate preferences between her and her wife in men.
You may also notice the picture is not of Tig. She requested no photography, so the photo is a section of the wall behind where she performed.
Her Background
Tig Notaro is a comedian, writer, and actor known for her dry wit, deadpan delivery, and fearless approach to tackling difficult topics in her stand-up sets. Notaro's rise to fame began in 2012, when she performed a now-legendary set at the Largo comedy club in Los Angeles, just days after receiving a cancer diagnosis. The set, which she performed shirtless to show her scars from a double mastectomy, was hailed as a triumph of brave and honest storytelling (dear to my heart). Since then, Notaro has released several acclaimed comedy albums, including "Live," "Boyish Girl Interrupted," and "Happy to be Here," and has performed at top comedy festivals around the world.
Her Style
What sets Notaro apart from other comedians is her ability to make audiences laugh while also addressing serious and sometimes painful topics, such as illness, grief, and loss. Her humor is often self-deprecating, but never mean-spirited, and she has a gift for finding the absurdity in even the darkest situations.
Other Work
In addition to her stand-up work, Notaro has also made a name for herself as an actor and writer. She has appeared in several TV shows and films, including "Transparent," "The Sarah Silverman Program," and "Instant Family," and has written for shows like "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "One Mississippi," a semi-autobiographical Amazon series that she created and starred in.
Overall, I cried laughing and I sat between friends and my wife who were all, also, laughing uncontrollably. If you haven't yet experienced the brilliance of Tig Notaro, I highly recommend checking out her work.

Seattle-based post-punk outfit Weep Wave released their full-length debut, 2019’s S.A.D.to critical praise from KEXP, Seattle Music Insider, Raised by Cassettes and Dan’s Tunes among others. In the five years since S.A.D.’s release, the band has been rather busy: They’ve gone through a lineup change, which has resulted in their current lineup: Dylan Fuentes (vocals, guitar), Mike Hubbard (drums, synth) and Mitch Midkiff (bass). They’ve released an EP and a handful of singles, one which was featured as KEXP’s Song of the Day that have gradually revealed an evolving and decided change in sonic direction. The band has shared stages with a handful of acclaimed and renowned acts including JOVM mainstays Los Bitchos, Blackwater Holylight, Gustaf, The Bobby Lees, Godcaster, Habibi, Reignwolf and Spirit Mother among others.  They’ve also made the rounds of the local and regional festival circuit, playing sets at Treefort Music Festival, Capitol Hill Block Party, South Sound Block Party and Off Beat Music Fest. They’ve done multiple tours up and down the West Coast — and they’ve even played few times here in NYC. Slated for an Friday release through Corporat Records, the Seattle-based outfit’s 11-song Dylan Wall-produced sophomore album Speck was recorded at Seattle’s 7 Hills Studios and reportedly sees the trio embarking on a kaleidoscopic sonic odyssey through the diverse array of genres they proudly call home. Thematically Fuentes’ lyrics oscillate between two contrasting realms: outward to explore the effects of the perils of capitalism and climate change — and inward, to scrutinize the self, in particular dissecting the ego and self-identity.  In the lead-up to to Friday, I wrote about two of the album’s previously released singles: The Low Praise-meets-grunge-like “Rebirth Mantra,” a song built around a pummeling, most pit friendly riff, thunderous drumming and a supple yet propulsive bass line within a classic, alternating loud-quiet-loud song structure that captures Fuentes at his most introspective and neurotic, with the song’s narrator expressing his fears of feeling into the same unhelpful — and perhaps even destructive — patterns that always lead to repeated failure and frustration. The song’s narrator envisions a transformed, evolved version of himself, a much more caring, courageous and empathetic self. Of course, are we able and willing to change and evolve? Or are we too stubborn, too blind to do what’s necessary to better ourselves?” “Phasing,” a decidedly grunge-like ripper built around the sort of feedback fueled, power chord-driven riffs reminiscent of 90s alt rock greats like Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, complete with enormous, arena rock-meets-mosh pit-like hooks and choruses.  “Conscious Dust,” Speck‘s latest single and opening track is a Jack Endino-like grunge take on post-punk that begins with a intricate punk-meets-cheek-in-tongue Motown-like drumbeat and a fuzzy bass line. Fuentes enters the fray with a punchy chant-like delivery before the song explodes into a hypnotic and noisy mosh pit friendly ripper. As a single, “Conscious Dust” sets up the album’s overall aesthetic and thematic concerns as a sort of bold, flag-planting moment for the band and the listener. For me, the song kind of reminds me of Pearl Jam’s “Do The Evolution,” as a sort of tongue-in-cheek takedown of humanity and human consciousness. “‘Conscious Dust’ is the first song I wrote for the album—and I intended it to be the first song on the album,” Weep Wave’s Dylan Fuentes says in press noses. It’s an ontological song that can function as playful mushroom-induced pontifications or absorbed as a reminder of the cycle of life. It speaks to a life cycle of having been here before but striving to do better than the last time.” “I like how the chill keyboards balance the heaviness,” Fuentes adds. “I tried to create songs that feel like a journey, something you can get lost in.?...

Lucy Dacus Brings It All Back Home
by Hilary Saunders | 9/2/16
Tumblr media
Back in March, when Lucy Dacus and her band passed through Boise, Idaho to play the opening night of Treefort Music Festival, every single member of the group—rolling four deep—wore shirts and caps that bore a variation on their home state’s motto: “Virginia Is For (Music) Lovers.” Before their set, they had stopped in Bleubird, locally considered Boise’s best sandwich shop, and while they waited in a line that stretched out the door, Dacus and the boys chatted eagerly and earnestly with those around them—especially if they asked about their shirts.
Four months later at the Harrison Street Café, one of her favorite sandwich shops in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia, Dacus remembers the festival fondly. Her debut album No Burden had only been out for about a month at the time, courtesy of Richmond indie EggHunt Records, and Boise was the farthest west the band had ever performed.
A lot has changed since then. Dacus has toured with indie-rock darlings like The Decemberists and Lord Huron, and impressed festival audiences at South by Southwest and Lollapalooza. On September 9, Matador Records will re-release No Burden, with the hopes that its eight songs will catapult the 21-year-old further into the scene’s fickle mainstream.
Comprised of Dacus’ first recorded works, No Burden showcases the singer/songwriter at her most revealing. Her contralto, which she manipulates from a whisper to a cry, conveys both self-awareness and self-deprecation. Meanwhile, the band, comprised of a traditional guitar-bass-drums set-up, stretches its volume and dynamics to parallel extremes, allowing Dacus to transform from demure chanteuse to rock band leader—sometimes even within the same song. Case in point: on lead single “I Don’t Want To Be Funny Anymore,” Dacus laments “being the odd man out” and “being the biggest fan,” right before the song erupts into a guttural roar. The album’s seven-and-a-half-minute centerpiece, “Map On A Wall” opens with Dacus acknowledging her physical flaws and begging, “Oh please, don’t make fun of me / of my crooked smile and my crowded teeth / of my pigeon feet, of my knobby knees,” but the song eventually builds to a tense crescendo, Dacus repeating similar lyrics with more force and tenacity.
Tumblr media
Sitting in a corner booth upstairs in the café, Dacus explains, “I make an effort to voice what I’m most sensitive about, because I know everyone else feels that way, too. The biggest hold-up, when it comes to insecurity, is when you think you’re alone in it. When you realize that you’re not, it’s easier to deal with. It’s just that somebody has to be the first person to break the ice of internal anxiety.”
Dacus grew up in Richmond’s neighboring town of Mechanicsville (its most famous export is Jason Mraz). She didn’t necessarily suffer from “extreme internal anxiety,” but she did drift in and out of the precarious social structures of the popular crowd in elementary and middle school. By the time she got to high school—the prestigious Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, which is coincidentally located just down the street from the Harrison Street Café—she had found like-minded creative friends, and Richmond started to feel more like a home.
Although Dacus initially enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University—also located near the café—to study film, she left after her second semester sophomore year to travel in Europe. Before leaving the country, she recorded what would become No Burden to help out now-bandmate Jacob Blizard on one of his college recording finals at Oberlin. It never occurred to either of them to release the recordings. “We were just going to put it on Bandcamp for our friends and family to see,” she says. “It’s the only accessible place for start up musicians to put their work.”
When Dacus returned, EggHunt Records’ co-founder Adam Henceroth saw her opening for his label’s own signees, Manatree. As Henceroth remembers, he only intended to watch Dacus for a few minutes.
“I sat in the front row like, ‘Hey lemme catch a few seconds of this before I meet this other guy backstage.’ Well, I forgot about whatever I was doing. Forty minutes later after being glued to her set, I was speechless,” he says. “The thing about Lucy is that, literally within 60 seconds of listening to her, you’re immediately drawn into her world. You’re caught in a tractor beam of sorts. She hits you square in the head and speaks to your heart.”
Tumblr media
Both in person and on No Burden, Dacus radiates that emotional authenticity that Henceroth describes. Part of that stems from her Richmond upbringing—specifically, the fact that Dacus was adopted. That fact is a bit oblique on the record; she never sings about her experience directly. But the lessons she learned reveal themselves in certain places—the album title itself is a reminder that we are not a duty to those who love us. They reflect Dacus’ desire to seek meaningful connections, especially when we are at our most vulnerable.
“[Adoption has] totally impacted what I write, because one of first things I learned as a philosophy was that life is worthwhile,” She says, “So much so that a bunch of people had to sacrifice a lot so that I would have one. As a four-year-old, that’s what I already knew.”
The most impressive element of Dacus’ debut is that while so much of No Burden resulted from growing up in Richmond, its messages transcend the city that raised her and embraced her. And everyone from EggHunt to Matador to the fans she’s gained in the meteoric past nine months seem to realize it. “It’s real cool how Lucy has seemed to stay true to her roots,” says Henceroth. “She talks about Virginia a lot, and she never had any obligation to include [EggHunt] in her story, but she did. She comes across as really honest. You can hear it in her music. There’s no pretense. She’s not trying to be something she’s not. It’s all coming from her. That’s the magical part of it.”

Darling of the Diskoteque
4/30/24
When I read that Cindy Lee was on her last American tour, I knew that I had to see her play in Salt Lake City. When her new album was released on March 30th, I was streaming it within hours and have been since. I panicked even more when I saw that the advance ticket sales were sold out. Fortunately, I was able to secure a press pass last minute, thanks to the folks who run International Lounge, where the show was. At 3:50pm on Saturday, I threw my sleeping bag, my camera, a change of clothes, and my laptop into my car and took off for Salt Lake. I didn't have much money, or a secure plan at all, but I arrived at the venue at exactly 7:54pm, 6 minutes before showtime.
It was worth the anxiety. After covering Treefort Music Festival last month, I was sure I had lost my love for seeing live shows, which I feel like I am still recovering from. A reminder to never force myself to watch bands I don't care much about. Cindy Lee's show was just another reminder to be so selective, her show definitely transcended me to a different place, one I am not familiar with but want to visit more often.

“I will stay here, playing the third Saturday of every month, for as long as they want me. So, I will be back next month, 17 February 2024 at 9pm. Hope to see you then.”
Well, I didn’t see you. I missed that gig because the state yanked the bars beer and wine license, and they reduced their hours to work around it.
Tumblr media
So I stayed home. I’m bummed not to be playing, but I understand. I will do whatever they ask of me. But they are in a really tough spot. Going without a liquor license is hard, and merely having a beer and wine license after having hard alcohol is not ideal.
Zack and Will continue to fight though. Crowdfunding and advocating for themselves in the media and statehouse. It’s an uphill battle, the old boys network is hard to penetrate.
instagram
All of this came to fore right after Will gifted me a team jacket. It was an honor to receive it.
I am back in the booth on the 16th of March, my traditional pre Treefort weekend set. I will be playing music in the festival with my band, eL Dopamine. I hope I have energy for it all.

Spoon Benders and Friends Throw Punk Rock Party in Portland, Oregon
By Greg Homolka
In the few short years since singer/guitarist Katy Black willed Spoon Benders into existence, the band has combined garage-psych musical sensibilities with a punk rock DIY ethos, and turned it into a tangible success. Over the past several months, Spoon Benders has been invited to join one tour after another, and filled the time in between with appearances at rock festivals around the western U.S. On April 1st, Spoon Benders returned to Portland, Oregon, and, along with fellow Portland bands Kill Michael and Help, hosted a sold-out, all-ages show at the Mission Theater.
Hard and heavy rockers Kill Michael opened the show. Their sludge sounds and growling vocals were embellished with intermittent congas and an enthusiastic, maraca-wielding, slam-dancing hype man. Their set culminated with Kill Michael’s lead singer getting the best of the maraca shaker in a staged boxing match on the dance floor.
Portland noise punk favorites Help then offered up a set of no-holds-barred thrash-and-burn ragers that channeled angst and energy in true punk fashion. The members of Help spent time in popular indie rock bands before getting together and finding cathartic release in laying down raucous rockers that speak to trying times, and literally screaming for help in the fight for freedom and equality. Black, along with fellow Spoon Benders Leo Pastor and Velvet, all made it on stage to participate in the musical mayhem.
It wasn’t long before Spoon Benders took the stage and got down to business. They played a majority of the songs on their first release, 2020’s Dura Mater, as well as some more recent singles, including 2021’s “Cut Behind” and latest release “Rm. 157,” which features Pastor on lead vocals rather than Black. The crowd was an active participant, head banging, moshing, and literally supporting the band when one of the members decided to play horizontally, riding atop the outstretched arms of fans. Help’s Ryan Neighbors joined the fray toward the end of the set, coming onstage to play some guitar and get in on the crowd surfing action.
It’s been a little over a year since I first saw Spoon Benders at Treefort Music Fest in Boise, Idaho. In that year, they’ve gained confidence and cohesion as a band, driving forward and crowd surfing the ensuing wave to more shows and a devoted fanbase. It will be fun to see where their youthful exuberance and dedication to their craft takes them next.
Catch Spoon Benders at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge on May 12 for the celebration of the release of sophomore album, How Things Repeat.

San Fermin- Arms (Better Company Records)
San Fermin- Arms (Better Company Records)
Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s band San Fermin is back with their fifth album. Nine songs filled with heartbreak from not one, but two breakups Ellis experienced. The emotions truly rise up on this album through the music and the lyrics sung by alternating vocalists Allen Tate and Claire Wellin. The first track, “Weird Environment,” has a rockin’ guitar melody resembling New Order in parts. Allen sings the most toe-tapping song on the album filled with those heartfelt lyrics I mentioned. “Burned my life down to the ground. Emptied out the Hungry Ghost. Wrote a sad song to get it out. If it helped, I didn’t notice.” The song builds to a punch later with driving instrumentation. Here’s the video:
youtube
Next up, “Didn’t Want You To,” Claire steps in to sing with a subtle twang, “I’ll find my way; Out of this place soon; If you didn’t want me, I didn’t want you to.” A beauty of a song complete with added horns. You can watch the video here:
youtube
Track 3, “Can't Unsee It,” brings Allen back on vocals with a gorgeous song that kind of reminds me of Lord Huron or The National for some reason. Love the horns on this one as well. Next is the title track, “Arms,” a bouncy piano ballad where Allen’s vocals shine here. A beautiful guitar solo adds to its lyrics. “Oh, I’m falling for you so madly; As soon as I leave, I just want to come back; And I know this is going to end badly; Cuz it feels like you are the one thing that I have; And who am I to hold you when you have arms for the whole world?”  Here’s the video:
youtube
Track 5, “Makes Me Want You,” Claire takes over with multiple layers of her vocal tracks. Along with gorgeous piano and trumpet, this “makes me want (the song) more.” Claire is also lead vocals on the next track, “My Love Is A Loneliness.” The third single off of the album is one you’re sure to sing along with in no time. I know I have. More multiple-layered vocals that will move any listener to tears. Powerful imagery also in the lyrics: “If everyone leaves and everyone dies; It’s just a question of when; If everyone cheats and everyone lies; Rather it me than them; If the worst should happen; And it will, and will again; I will still be standing; With loneliness, my friend; To start again.” The video can be seen here:
youtube
Next up, “Useful Lies,” is a beautiful, soft acoustic guitar melody sung by Allen. And then wait for it, here come the strings, the harmonies, and the horns that make this song truly soar! Track 8, “Wasting on Me,” Allen and Claire’s harmonies really blend here on this more upbeat song. The beauty of the boy/girl vocals really makes this one stand out. “Never meant to lead you down a road of sadness. But we’ve arrived where there’s nothing to be done. Could pretend there was a moment when we lost it. But we were running different races from the gun.” The album ends with “You Owe Me.” It’s back to Claire on lead vocals with a soft, sad piano-driven melody. In comes the brass that really helps capture the mood. Emotional heartbreak here with, “And I had to get my stuff out of your parents’ place. Your father wouldn’t even meet me in my eye.” The album was recorded at Better Company Studios in Brooklyn by none other than Allen Tate, the male vocalist. A national tour begins in the middle of March(see below). The last time I saw San Fermin was ten years ago at FRZN FEST in Madison. You don’t want to miss this album performed live; I know I won’t.
