Review: Qualia the Purple by Hisamitsu Ueo and Shirou Tsunashima
Summary: Hatou "Gaku" Manabu is just an ordinary high school student when her life is changed forever by meeting Yukari. Originally strangers, they become fast friends after Yukari crashes into Gaku in the hallway of their high school, leading to an unexpected kiss. Gaku quickly learns that Yukari is far from ordinary; her bright purple eyes are extremely special, as they cause her to see all humans as nothing more than robots. This ability allows grants her many talents, including the ability to fix anything, but it also makes her valuable to all kinds of people. When Yukari goes away to join a secret organization, Gaku goes on a deadly mission to bring her back, and she will do anything to achieve that goal.

Review beneath the cut
The Good: Qualia the Purple is undeniably original and steeped in philosophy and allegory. The narrative takes its audience to places they would never expect, and with each turn, this manga gets weirder and weirder in the best possible ways. This makes it enjoyable from the get go and very difficult to put down. However, the value of Qualia goes much deeper than being a wholly original work. As the story develops, this manga subtly transforms from a quirky work about a girl with strange powers, to quite possibly the most poignant and powerful allegory for grief that I have ever experienced. The heartache the characters feel is visceral, and as you watch the characters struggle, you can't help but see the natural conclusion of their actions: a hopeless and futile struggle that only leads to more loss.
The Bad: This story relies on very complicated concepts from both quantum physics and philosophy, which leads to the characters lecturing -- internally and externally -- for pages at a time in order to provide exposition and definitions that the audience needs to understand the events of the story. Unfortunately, due to the contents of these speeches, the lectures themselves are difficult to follow, sometimes bordering on nonsensical, and interferes with the pacing of the story.
Overview: Qualia the Purple is a must read manga. it is weird, and gut-wrenching, and dense, making it not only entertaining, but also uniquely memorable and long-lasting. Gaku is an excellent protagonist; it is through her eyes and thoughts that allows the reader to lose themselves in this story and experience this wonderful tragedy that will keep you guessing to the final page.
Rating: A

192023 murasakiiro no qualia // 2011 // hisamatsu ueo, shirou tsunashima completely brimming with ideas, for both better and worse. i think a lot of its thoughts specifically when it comes to concepts like fate and perception to be really fascinating but its logic and feelings can come off as particularly heavyhanded. still, i had a lot of fun with this and i love its visual style.

Love Transcends Time And Space In Qualia The Purple
Qualia The Purple is a SciFi romance manga written by Ueo Hisamitsu and drawn by Tsunashima Shirou. The following pages should be read from right to left. Marii Yukari sees the world differently. Manga: Murasakiiro no Qualia
By: Hisamitsu Ueo (Story), Shirou Tsunashima (Art)
Genres: Fantasy, Mystery, Psychological, Sci-Fi, Shoujo Ai, Shounen, Tragedy
Description: “Hatou Manabu has a very odd friend at school named Marii Yukari. Yukari has purple eyes and a bizarre way of looking at the world: she sees all living things as robots. This has not always worked out well for Yukari, even costing her a best friend when she was younger. However, Yukari insists that the things she says she sees is true, and her vision seems to give her insight into the abilities of others. Manabu thinks she’s just weird, but she soon realizes that Yukari has unexpected talents. Her eyes allow her to view the world in a different way, and even the police come to hear her insights. Eventually, her eyes also get Manabu wrapped up in dangerous plots, and force Manabu to not only step up and take a much more proactive role in her own life, but also to question what being a human or a robot actually means.”
Status: Completed; 18 Chapters
Personal Thoughts: I remember hating some parts of this story (including the ending) but still love it at the same time...

Super Robot Wars T’s Second Trailer is Coming on January 11
Bandai Namco announced next month’s stream for the Super Robot Wars series. It’ll be held on January 11, 2019, at 21:00 JST. The stream will include new information for Super Robot Wars T, the new mobile game Super Robot Wars DD, and the ongoing mobile game Super Robot Wars Cross-Omega. Links for the stream itself weren’t published yet, and this post will be updated with them at a later date.
Guests appearing on stream will be voice actor Kenji Akabane, who’s always there, and Youhei Azakami, who voices Dido, the main character of Super Robot Wars DD, which we detailed in the article covering the game’s announcement.  Moreover, the stream’s description lists two mysterious guests, who should definitely turn out to be voice actors for the Original main characters of Super Robot Wars T. Series Producer Takanobu Terada said on the last stream, which we made a summary of, that the reveal of Super Robot Wars T‘s Original main characters would be in January. We’ll learn more about the VTX company too.
Super Robot Wars T‘s latest screenshots on Famitsu featured some characters not shown in the first trailer, including Magic Knight Rayearth‘s Umi Ryuuzaki. Producers Takanobu Terada and Shouhei Mogami also shared many comments on the game. Terada-san shared more comments a few weeks ago on the series’s official radio show.
I’m really looking forward to Super Robot Wars T, and as always I’ll be covering the stream. You can be sure to find here a summary with all the new info as soon as possible after it’ll end. I’m looking forward to seeing which voice actors they picked for the Original characters, and which mecha designer created the Original mechas. I’m betting on mangaka Shirou Tsunashima as character designer. He worked as an animator on games in the past like Super Robot Wars Z, where he did multiple cut-ins, and he contributed slightly to the third anime adaptation as well. For mecha designer, I’m betting on mangaka Yunosuke Yoshinaga, the mangaka of the mecha manga Break Blade. Super Robot Wars V‘s Original mechas were designed by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi, the duo behind the Linebarells of Iron manga. Super Robot Wars X‘s were by popular figure designer and Max Factory co-creator Masaki Asai. So now for T, I bet they went with a mangaka again.
Super Robot Wars T launches for PlayStation 4 and Switch on March 20 in Japan. The game’s Southeast Asia version, launching the same day, will include an English translation.

Manga You Might Have Missed
Manga You Might Have Missed
…and other amazing alliterations. No Power Rangers this week, for the simple reason that my back acting up delayed Sunday’s post to Monday, which gave me a shorter timeline to pop out today’s post, and the Power Rangers Retrospectives take longer to do than other posts. Instead, I’m going to review and recommend two of my favorite obscure manga series: Double Arts and Qualia the Purple. Both of…
