Podunk Golf Course Tour 2024 - Deming, NM
Tumblr media
We drove from Tucson to Deming today, lots of beautiful wildflowers along the way....but hard to get a good picture at 60 mph!
Tumblr media
We arrived in Deming around noon, got settled at Dream Catcher's RV Park, had a little lunch, and then headed to Rio Mimbres Golf Course to get in a round of golf. We have played this course in the past, so we thought it would be a perfect spot to start off our summer of '24 golf course tour. Our goal this spring/summer/fall is to find small-town and inexpensive courses to play as we travel across the western U.S. and parts of Canada.
We paid $20/person to walk 18 holes at Rio Mimbres. This is an 18-hole course, the fairways are dirt, weeds, crabgrass, and, occasionally, grass. The greens were rough, bumpy, and a bit "furry".
Tumblr media
This ball is lying in the middle of a fairway, just to give you an idea of fairway conditions.
However, it is a nice course to walk, the staff is friendly, and it is not crowded. There are even a couple of holes where water comes into play:
Tumblr media
We are working on a rating system for the courses we play, we would give this course a rating of 2 out of 10, due to the fairway and green conditions. If you miss the fairway, the punishment can be harsh, especially on your clubs. The course layout is a bit hard to follow, Doug actually played the wrong hole when he played this course one time. There is no water on the course, there are bathrooms on the course. No drink cart and we did not see a clubhouse, however, there might be one, we just couldn't find it!
Tumblr media
We survived our first round and were still smiling! Time to head back to the campground for an adult beverage and dinner. On to Texas tomorrow.

Fallout new vegas companions taking the courier's place in lonesome road (+ cut companions if that's cool with u) (thanks!!)
The problem with trying to adapt Lonesome Road to another character's experience is that so much of its story hinges on the courier's missing past and the former Frumentarius' struggle to make them understand what happened, why it caused a shockwave across multiple lives, locations and generations, and whether to avenge or let go of the harm that was unknowingly done to the Divide. So if you bring the companions into the mix instead of Courier Six, you either have a long-running story of mistaken identity (a hilarious concept, Ulysses being absolutely positive that the companion is the one who wrecked his dream home while they have no idea who this angry, verbose man is), or a drastically different history for the companions themselves. I say let's give that second option a shot, it seems fun and headcanon-y.
Arcade Gannon: While I don't think Arcade would be directly responsible for the destruction of the Divide, I think he would pale at hearing Ulysses' message searching for Enclave agents and would set out to confront the angry courier on behalf of his hidden family. The Enclave remnants are already hunted by the NCR and the Brotherhood of Steel, and the last thing they need is to be chased out of yet another home over something they didn't personally do. He'd accept ED-E's help wholeheartedly and consider turning back every time he ran into marked men or tunnelers, but his own resolve to save his loved ones would urge him to persevere. I think his determination would intrigue Ulysses, enough to engage the young research scientist in conversation if he arrived at the end of the road in one piece, and the courier might even let go of his vendetta if Arcade revealed that he was doing this out of the goodness of his heart rather than a sense of duty. Arcade would cancel the nuke launch, but would seriously consider blowing up the Legion.
Craig Boone: We know the NCR and Legion were fighting over the Divide before the ICBMs leveled the area. But what if that was by design, rather than by accident? Maybe Boone has more skeletons in his closet than just Bitter Springs, and he was part of a strike team that used old Enclave technology to surprise the Legion forces and seal off an access route, a decision based on math and made by men who had never met the people of Hopeville and Ashton that they sentenced to death. It's yet another weight on the sniper's conscience, and yet another debt he feels obligated to pay, so when Ulysses' call goes out, he answers. The usual dangers of the Divide wouldn't slow him down, but the turbulent weather would irritate him to no end. Upon arrival at the temple, Boone wouldn't mince words because he already knows he's guilty of the charge and he knows Ulysses used to walk for the Legion. If he survived the encounter, Boone would take the opportunity to rain the same destruction down on Caesar's troops.
Lily Bowen: There are about 119 years of Lily's life as a super mutant that are unaccounted-for, and we know she suffers from schizophrenia like many other nightkin. Perhaps it was Lily who discovered the Enclave package and unwittingly left it in the home of America's missiles: Perhaps it was Leo. I'm inclined to think it was Leo, who was probably searching for a cache of Stealth Boys in the old military installations across the desert, and who simply didn't care when a new hole in the earth opened up behind him. Lily, on the other hand, cares deeply, and would set out after Ulysses in the interest of making amends where she could. More so than any other companion, I think Lily would be disturbed by the tunnelers and would go out of her way to crush them wherever they popped up. The marked men would earn her sympathy and she would do her best to knock them out without killing them. After doing the same to Ulysses, Lily would cancel the launch and weep over the subsequent loss of ED-E. She would likely bring the little eyebot back to the Mojave and search for a way to fix it.
Raul Alfonso Tejada: We already know that Raul goes to extreme lengths to avenge the people he cares about, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to mix his backstory into the story of the Divide. Following the murder of Claudia in Tucson/Two Sun, Raul chased Dirty Dave and his brothers across Arizona and into the town of Ashton before killing them. Unbeknownst to him, Dirty Dave had a package with him that could speak to the nuclear missile silos hidden in the Divide, and the earth crumbled behind the vaquero as he made his way back home. Though he'd heard of the devastation, Raul didn't put two and two together until Ulysses sent out his summons, and because he didn't have anything planned that week, the old mechanic decided to answer the call. He would put up with Ulysses' messages like a good sport until he encountered the man in the temple, where he would refuse to fight until the two talked things out like civil people. I think Ulysses would be surprised at the revelation that the ghoul he had cast as a villain was following his own quest for vengeance and unaware of the package, and would come away somewhat amused by the situation. They would most likely team up to fight off the marked men, and Raul would cancel the launch and take a wrench to the machines to prevent any more "misunderstandings."
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: Let's say one of Cass' caravans delivered a package back in the day. Let's say that package accidentally buried the caravan crew and an entire community along with it. Let's say Cass knows, and that's one of the reasons she drinks. While Courier Six walks the Divide out of curiosity about their missing past, I think Cass would do it as a form of penance in and of itself, with a little desire for self-destruction thrown into the mix. The journey would start out as a bender fueled by self-loathing and the fanciful notion of giving her missing caravan a proper funeral, and by the time Cass runs out of whiskey she's already halfway through the Cave of the Abaddon and punching holes through the tunnelers with her shotgun. She would largely ignore Ulysses' cryptic messages and holotapes, but she'd grow fond of the little eyebot that took a shine to her and would tear after it once the mysterious courier repossessed it. Following the final battle, Cass would cancel the launch, but only at the very last second, just to revel in the fleeting feeling of control.
Veronica Santangelo: I just can't see Veronica knowingly or unknowingly waking up a nuclear arsenal with a careless application of tech, but I can totally see her stumbling upon the aftermath of something her old mentor is responsible for. Father Elijah already has a tenuous grasp on the consequences of his own actions, and we know that the prototype tech that controls the Divide's weather is a Big MT project. Maybe Elijah paid Hopeville a visit to check it out and took his investigation a little too far when he discovered the nukes. This would explain Ulysses' directions to the old man to find the Sierra Madre, sealing his doom inside the casino. But where does that leave Ulysses? Along comes Veronica, following her mentor's trail of destruction, and the courier can't help but guide her along the path, show her the meaning of the wreckage and the danger of pre-war technology when left to the discretion of those with old-world values, like the Brotherhood. Along that line, I think Ulysses would try to test her like he does Courier Six, and would schedule a launch to see what she does. Veronica would cancel the launch and resolve to never tell her brothers and sisters in Steel about the secrets of the Divide. She might dump some water on the consoles for good measure. More importantly, I think she might finally realize that the unchanging family she clings to can only die out, or go down the same path that Elijah did.
ED-E: Given that ED-E is a robot, I think Ulysses would be hell-bent on finding whoever sent the little guy rather than consider that the eyebot saw a package with Enclave markings on it, picked it up of its own accord, and deposited it wherever it next encountered old American symbols. Through its communication with the other eyebots in the Divide, I think ED-E would get the picture about the courier's quest for the responsible party and play dumb for as long as possible. The other ED-E would help conceal the mistake to save its new friend, but Ulysses isn't stupid and would eventually figure it out. But how do you effectively punish a robot? Maybe he would set the nukes to target the Divide again, to send any remaining eyebots to the scrapyard for good, but it's a long shot. If he did, ED-E would cancel the launch, but would join its override system capabilities to its counterpart's and use the combined decryption power to ensure that both eyebots make it through the ordeal unharmed.
Rex: This good boy would never even consider entering the Divide. Seriously, what dog in their right mind would go in there? What cyberdog? No thank you. Still, the idea of a dog being responsible for the nukes and Ulysses continuing to hold a grudge is beyond funny. Maybe Rex was part of a mission for the Legion when he still belonged to Caesar, part of the group that leveled the Divide on behalf of the Bull. Maybe that's why Antony says he was "lost in battle," and maybe he's the only surviving member of that squad. I don't see why Ulysses would hang around the Divide waiting for the dog to look upon the hell he'd wrought, and he would more than likely seek the canine out himself as soon as he heard about the King's new pet. From there, the story turns into Courier Six investigating an assassination attempt on a goddamned dog, and the events of Lonesome Road play out pretty much the same way they were written - plus plenty of asides about how Ulysses is going to way too much effort over a creature that can't comprehend what nukes are.
Benny Gecko: Few people know that Yes Man was actually one of two securitrons that Benny managed to incapacitate and reprogram, and while the head of the Chairmen hid his favorite in the Tops for safekeeping, he sent the other out into the world for some recon and experimentation. Imagine his surprise when Yes Man was able to remotely hack into a nuclear missile silo and wipe out a budding trade community. And who would've thought that test run was going to come back to bite him in the ass, right after he was sprung from the Legion camp? I think Benny would do everything in his power to avoid entering the Divide, but I also think Ulysses would have little patience for him and would actively force the disgraced city boy into walking the Courier's Mile by blocking any other path out of the Mojave. Benny would form an attachment to ED-E, similar to Yes Man, but would complain the whole way and confront his tormenter with little remorse. He would also nuke both the NCR and the Legion if he came away alive, probably with some snarky one-liner about "letting the chips fall where they may."
Vulpes Inculta: Vulpes already has a few scorched-earth badges on his Pioneer Scouts belt (Nipton, Camp Searchlight, etc.), so eliminating the Divide is just another tactic in the grand strategy playing out between the Bull and the Bear. All he needed to do was leave a certain package in town, and the problem basically solved itself. Unfortunately, that deserter of his wasn't buried under the wreckage, and now Caesar has ordered him to assassinate the renegade. The fool keeps announcing his whereabouts every few hours or so, making tracking an easy task, but by the third time he feels eyes on the back of his neck and turns to find nothing there, Vulpes can't help but wonder whether the student has surpassed the teacher. The final showdown of Frumentarii would be something for the ages, a clash of philosophies and loyalties with plenty of verbal sparring between the bullets. If he survived the encounter with Ulysses, Vulpes would definitely nuke the NCR.
Ulysses: This cut companion can't very well face off against himself, can he? Unless... he was the courier who accidentally brought the Enclave detonator that sealed the Divide's doom. Given the weight of this grief, I think Ulysses would similarly force himself to walk the length of the Divide, take in the utter destruction that his own actions had wrought, and reflect on the meaning of one man changing the course of history. When it came down to the final room, the final decision, our disillusioned courier would activate the launch as a way of testing himself, testing his own resolve. Like Cass, he would stare at the machines shuddering to life around him until the very last moment, before shutting the system down for good, smiling under his breathing mask and walking away forever.
Victor: The robot cowboy doesn't really know what the angry man on the eyebot keeps talking about. He certainly doesn't remember delivering a package to a place called Hopeville or Ashton. Why would he? Mr. House is very good about covering his tracks, particularly when it comes to eliminating business rivals. Really, it could have been any old securitron. Nevertheless, Victor rolls merrily along in search of the courier who summoned his master, letting his own optics passively take in the devastated wasteland left behind by bombs that launched 200 years too late. Because of his robotic nature, I think it'd be a lot easier for Ulysses to get the drop on Victor and disable him at the temple, then wait until House sent another envoy or came himself. House would probably lose interest as soon as he got his data, which I don't think would stall Ulysses much: Once he figured out the Strip's owner isn't coming, he'd find some way to get inside the Lucky 38. If, however, Victor prevailed in the final struggle, he would nuke both the NCR and the Legion on behalf of Mr. House.

Blog XIV: Ditch the Desert, Come to the Ocean State
Benjamin Franklin is famous for saying there are only two things that are certain in life: death and taxes, I would also add water as another thing in life that is certain and without water, life as we know it is impossible.
Here in Rhode Island (the Ocean State) the majority of our identity is based around water, yet even we squander the water resources we are blessed to have.[] Water has increasingly been the subject of national headlines in the past decade.
As Chapter 20 of Living in the Environment points out, we kicked off the 2010s with the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Petroleum leaked from the off-shore oil rig for three months and polluted 1,300 miles of coastline, enough to cover Rhode Island’s entire coastline three times.
Chapter 20 also notes that 2014 saw the start of the half-decade long Flint Water Crisis. Michigan’s state government poisoned the city of Flint’s water supply with lead in the name of austerity.[] The water was so corrosive that autoparts manufacturers in the city complained that they could not use the water as it tore through their parts, and people who drank the water suffer life-altering effects from the government’s cruel policies.[]
While Flint, MI held its grip on national headlines for months, if not a year or two, there is one place in particular that has held the nation’s attention since the 2010s and into the current decade: California.
Between 2011 and 2017, Californians endured the most prolonged, severe drought in recent memory, and among the longest and most intense in the state’s history.
Speaking for my fellow urban studies majors at Fordham University, from the endless sprawl and crisscrossing freeways of Los Angeles, to the expansive gentrification and strict housing covenants of San Francisco, California is the embodiment of everything that makes our blood boil. As an urban studies major, I also tend to look at California’s water woes through the lens of urban planning.
The guiding case study for Chapter 13 in Living in the Environment centers around the Colorado River. The system of dams and reservoirs that make up the river’s anthropogenic patrimony provide cities from Los Angeles, California to Boulder, Colorado with electricity, farming irrigation, and drinking water just to name a few.
The ecosystem services the Colorado River provides are already stretched to its limits. The spectacular growth of cities like Los Angeles takes a chainsaw to the natural capital it relies on from the Colorado River.
The mammoth amounts of water consumed by metropolitan populations in desert climates obscures the fact that they are in fact in the desert. Why do we continue to be shocked when there is a drought in the desert?
There is a reason why so few desert cities rise to populations as high as Los Angeles, or grow as fast as Tucson. Deserts are notoriously harsh, its arid climate coupled with scarce sources of water is the reason why many people have died crossing them.
Industrial methods of irrigation, construction of dams and reservoirs, plus the advents of air conditioning and hydroelectricity give Los Angeles the ability to hold over ten million people, and former president Trump the ability to plan his next coup attempt from what was once swampland.
Industrial technology advanced to a point where we can thickly settle environments once too harsh for us. Now, the population of Americans living in desert climates has become too large to sustain the ecosystem services and natural capital that industrialism in part helps deliver to them.
To escape what anthropogenic change has wrought in the form of endless drought, frequent wildfires, unbearable heat, and smog, I am arguing that people currently residing in desert cities should consider moving to the Ocean State.
I know that the entire state of Rhode Island can fit into a lot of desert counties multiple times and that the entire population of the Ocean State is only one-tenth to that of Los Angeles County, believe me, I know.
Rhode Island is so small, however, that if desert climate migrants concentrate in Providence, growth will not only encocmpass the entire state, but also include other states like Massachusetts and Connecticut. As the center for new climate migrants from the southwest, Providence could possibly hold its own against Boston, perhaps even New York.
I can already hear people saying that moving from the desert to the ocean is just swapping one climate crisis for another.
What I would say to that, however, is that although Rhode Island is the Ocean State, most of it is not directly at sea level as, for example, Florida is. A defining characteristic often found just feet away from our shoreline is the state’s steep rolling hills. Providence, in fact, is so steep that for a time we had the cable car system in New England, as trolleys often could not climb College Hill. For the amount of coastline that we have, I do not anticipate that even our settlements that are at sea level will be permanently lost at the mercy of the ocean. Encouraging climate migrants to move to Rhode Island could help fund sustainable coastline resilience initiatives to stave off the sea.
Booming population growth, of course, requires a lot of urban planning. We could forgo the mistakes of last century and create vibrant, affordable, sustainable, and dense communities and revitalize those that are still feeling the pains of deindustrialization.
As for what climate migrants from desert cities get in Rhode Island that they do not get in the desert: plentiful water supplies (no, we don’t just have salt water.) Although we may have to source water from other places, we have plenty of options, unlike most desert settlements that are simply not equipped to sustain such mammoth human populations.
I know that this is a far off and lofty vision, marketing the Ocean State as a climate refuge sounds like an oxymoron. To at least have a vision, is to begin lending a hand to future and current victims of the climate crisis.
Rhode Island is my favorite place on Earth, I want nothing more than for other people to make it home.
Epilogue: Waterfootprint.org is a website where you can calculate your water footprint, i.e. the amount of water you consume in a given year
My water footprint is 645.4 meters cubed, however, the website only calculated this from my country of residence, gender (somehow,) my diet (vegetarian) and the amount of yearly income consumed by myself which I had to estimate. I do not believe that this is accurate, in fact it is likely significantly higher considering that I have a front and backyard with a swimming pool. If my parents and I lived in their childhood neighborhood of Federal Hill it would be significantly lower considering we would not have a yard, garden, or a swimming pool to tend to.
Population density within cities makes them more environmentally friendly. People in dense urban areas often use less water and less inputs of almost everything since dwellings are smaller and proximity to basic necessities is often within walking distance. Cities have to be part of the equation if we are to solve the climate crisis, just because I am closer to "nature" here on Conanicut Island does not mean living here is more environmentally friendly and less wasteful.
WC: 1,067
Question: Is anybody tracking potential migration patterns as water resources become more scarce?

Hey, Sunflower!
"Chico Jimenez here, on KELP, on a sunny morning, Monday, November 17, 2025 at 7.24 am, with the best of Latin music por los chicos y las chicas de El Paso, Texas."
"La vida está una bella cancion! Woof!"
"Some words of wisdom from our mascot, Charlie Chihuahua. And that last song by Tomas Andrzewski, Tierra del Amor, bouncin' up the Latin charts, was surely a beautiful song.
"And now we have a special guest on KELP Morning. Let me welcome La Princesita!"
"Hola! Muchas gracias! El Paso,  vos quiero muchá!"  says the Princess.
"De nada, princesita. Now I've noticed you always say that, everywhere you go. What is it? Vos . . ." asks Chico.
"Vos quiero muchá!"  says the Princess.
"Now, in Tex-Mex, that doesn't mean a hell of a lot. What exactly are you tryin' to say, say in English?" asks Chico.
"Oh! It means 'I love you all!'" says the Princess.
"Oh. Around these parts, we'd probably say something like 'Los quiero a todos'," says Chico.
"Yeah, I can understand that but it sounds really formal, like I'm not that close to them. I want to be a close bessie of me fans in Texas!" says the Princess.
"OK, and I think you are. You're really popular around here, with Latinos and Anglos alike," says Chico.
"I'm so happy! Love to be loved! That's why I said I love them too!" says the Princess.
"I hear you've got a new song, just to introduce to El Paso," says Chico.
"Right 'tis! Every Monday I do a new song for the week. Last week, it was 'Princesistos, Princesistas'," says the Princess. "I sang that in . . . let me see if I can remember all the names . . . Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Salt Lake and Trinidad," says the Princess.
"And I have to say somethin': I heard some terrible news that ladrones were copyin' these radio broadcasts off the radio and sellin' them like podcasts at like 50 Units a pop. I want to kill them, truth be told, grubby li'l snide creatures they are! Dunno' give yar brass to los ladrones! No le des vos pisto a los ladrones!" says the Princess.
"Dad says there's somethin' about I'm not allowed to release videos on the ICT except Latin ones through Pina Colada. I want to do these ones about Guatemala in English, so everyone can understand them, not just Latino people, because Guatemalans need all the help they can get now," says the Princess.
"But, at Christmas, at the same time we release our Spanish-language videopack, "Princesita", Pina Colada will release these songs about Guatemala in English and Spanish, in another videopack, called "Princess At War." So you can buy them off the ICT at their normal prices. Just don't try to jump the queue or it'll cost you a fortune!'" the Princess says.
"OK, thank you for warnin' our listeners, princesita. Now, what is your new song?" Chico asks.
"It's called 'Hey, Sunflower!' It's about the flowers and we are livin' in the same world but they're the lucky ones! Like the junta in Guatemala doesn't affect them at all. They stay beautiful while the people get hurt," says the Princess.
"Well, that surely sounds interesting! OK, your band is here now so you can go over and do the song for us," says Chico.
"Cheers, Chico!" the Princess says.
Coco Loco leads on acoustic guitar. It is a classic flamenco rumba but played fast: Am G F but instead of going down to Em, it is what the Princess calls “rolled down and quickly wound back up” : Am G F G Am. It sounds something like the video at the bottom of the page.
The Princess joins in, improvising melodies off that chord pattern on her electric piano.
Then Pom-Pom starts the drum machine.
The Three Angels are shaking three tambourines and banging out the machine's beat on them too.
All-About-The starts the bass line.
Then everyone is doing Am in unison and the Princess starts singing  . . . or is it shouting?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!
Then everyone plays that Am G F G Am pattern and the Princess really does sing.
The sun is shining, just like every day
We can go out and play the same games we always play
But something's changed today, we cannot see
We're no longer equal, no longer free
We must be careful
They're [the Three Angels back up the Princess with harmonies here] watchin' you and me
[Then the Princess alone] Watchin' you and me
[A little melody with Coco's guitar and the Princess' piano in unison]
[The whole band backs up the Princess]
Hey, sunflower
As beautiful as you were yesterday
Hey, hey, hey, sunflower!
Golden [clap, clap] shining [clap, clap]
You don't care
Our country's dying
'Cos you can always be free
You can laugh at the people you see
[Stop]
[Musical Interlude - The Princess starts a melody on the electric piano and the whole band copies it - Then everyone plays chords except the Princess, who does the "supersonic" improvised melodies, with flourishes and glissandoes, for which she is famous]
[As the band plays chords, the Princess sings, playing the same chords on her piano]
Diego, he walked out of his factory
Because what they pay him's not enough to eat
He and all the workers took their cries to the street
Now they're all gone
The Army's victory
But their children are cryin'
[The band provides singing back-up for the Princess on the next two lines]
"Mummy, feed me!"
"Mummy, feed me!"
[The whole band backs up the Princess]
Hey, sunflower
As beautiful as you were yesterday
Hey, hey, hey, sunflower!
Golden [clap, clap] shining [clap, clap]
You don't care
Our country's dying
'Cos you can always be free
You can laugh at the people you see
[Musical Interlude -  The Princess and Coco "duel" on the piano and guitar with melodies]
[Then the whole band plays Am louder and louder and the Princess shouts:]
Wo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-h! Ya! Ya! Ya! Ya!
[Then the Princess reverts to singing and playing chords as the band backs her up musically]
The Army chased the people out of their houses
Droppin' fire from the sky shootin' all around
The fathers can only come back to work
By sunset they're in town with their wives and boys and girls
They have nothin' but food and bunk beds
[the Three Angels back up the Princess with harmonies here]
No more land
[Then the Princess alone]
No more land
[The whole band backs up the Princess]
Hey, sunflower
As beautiful as you were yesterday
Hey, hey, hey, sunflower!
Golden [clap, clap] shining [clap, clap]
You don't care
Our country's dying
'Cos you can always be free
You can laugh at the people you see
[The Princess and the band, slowly] Hey ... sunflow . . .er
[The Princess shouts, alone] As beautiful as you were when we were free
[The Princess and whole band sing together]
Hey, hey, hey sunflower
Nothing has changed for you
Take me to yesterday with you.
[Musical conclusion - The Princess leads the band on melodies]
"OK , thank you, that was great!" says Chico.
"De nada, Chico! Cheers for lettin' me sing it here!" says the Princess.
"Come sit down and have some water, muchacha. You sound winded!" says Chico.
"Cheers!" says the Princess.
[The sound of the Princess drinking]
"See, your band is breakin' out Cokes and . . . all kind o' stuff to chill out [Laughter from Chico and the band]. Just make yourselves at home, ladies and gentlemen. Nuestro estudio es su estudio!  Princesita, it's a cute little song about flowers but you sure did get the politics into it," Chico says.
"It's not politics like Democratico Revolutionario and Cristiano Nacional anymore. They used to argue. But this is different. This is life and death. And I cannot sing songs about flowers and let people forget what's happenin' to el pueblo de Guatemala, like everythin’s fine," says the Princess.
"And President Hemingway reported to Congress about Guatemala this week,” Chico says.  “And she said basically what you've been saying. I guess you're happy about that?" Chico asks.
"Of course, everyone who's tellin' the truth is gonna wind up sayin' the same thing, aren't they?" says the Princess. "And your President is tellin' the truth. Full marks. She's honest. But where are the troops? Why are the junta still there? Tellin' the truth is good. It's godly. But ya have to DO somethin' too or it's music to watch people get killed to. So we've got to keep on beggin' and pleadin' until she gets it straight and DOES somethin'!"
"I'm sure that'll come," says Chico.  "I'm sure that'll come, muchacha. Our system is kind o' slow here but eventually things do get done.”
“Like I always say, ‘Pronto llegara, nuestro tiempo,’” says the Princess. “Can your listeners understand that?”
“Yes, they sure can,” says Chico.

NASA's Treasure Map for Water Ice on Mars NASA has big plans for returning astronauts to the Moon in 2024, a stepping stone on the path to sending humans to Mars. But where should the first people on the Red Planet land? A new paper published in Geophysical Research Letters will help by providing a map of water ice believed to be as little as an inch (2.5 centimeters) below the surface. Water ice will be a key consideration for any potential landing site. With little room to spare aboard a spacecraft, any human missions to Mars will have to harvest what's already available for drinking water and making rocket fuel. NASA calls this concept "in situ resource utilization," and it's an important factor in selecting human landing sites on Mars. Satellites orbiting Mars are essential in helping scientists determine the best places for building the first Martian research station. The authors of the new paper make use of data from two of those spacecraft, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and Mars Odyssey orbiter, to locate water ice that could potentially be within reach of astronauts on the Red Planet. "You wouldn't need a backhoe to dig up this ice. You could use a shovel," said the paper's lead author, Sylvain Piqueux of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "We're continuing to collect data on buried ice on Mars, zeroing in on the best places for astronauts to land." Buried Treasure on Mars Liquid water can't last in the thin air of Mars; with so little air pressure, it evaporates from a solid to a gas when exposed to the atmosphere. Martian water ice is locked away underground throughout the planet's mid-latitudes. These regions near the poles have been studied by NASA's Phoenix lander, which scraped up ice, and MRO, which has taken many images from space of meteor impacts that have excavated this ice. To find ice that astronauts could easily dig up, the study's authors relied on two heat-sensitive instruments: MRO's Mars Climate Sounder and the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) camera on Mars Odyssey. Why use heat-sensitive instruments when looking for ice? Buried water ice changes the temperature of the Martian surface. The study's authors cross-referenced temperatures suggestive of ice with other data, such as reservoirs of ice detected by radar or seen after meteor impacts. Data from Odyssey's Gamma Ray Spectrometer, which is tailor-made for mapping water ice deposits, were also useful. As expected, all these data suggest a trove of water ice throughout the Martian poles and mid-latitudes. But the map reveals particularly shallow deposits that future mission planners may want to study further. Picking a Landing Site While there are lots of places on Mars scientists would like to visit, few would make practical landing sites for astronauts. Most scientists have homed in on the northern and southern mid-latitudes, which have more plentiful sunlight and warmer temperatures than the poles. But there's a heavy preference for landing in the northern hemisphere, which is generally lower in elevation and provides more atmosphere to slow a landing spacecraft. A large portion of a region called Arcadia Planitia is the most tempting target in the northern hemisphere. The map shows lots of blue and purple in this region, representing water ice less than one foot (30 centimeters) below the surface; warm colors are over two feet (60 centimeters) deep. Sprawling black zones on the map represent areas where a landing spacecraft would sink into fine dust. What's Next? Piqueux is planning a comprehensive campaign to continue studying buried ice across different seasons, watching how the abundance of this resource changes over time. The more we look for near-surface ice, the more we find," said MRO Deputy Project Scientist Leslie Tamppari of JPL. "Observing Mars with multiple spacecraft over the course of years continues to provide us with new ways of discovering this ice." JPL manages the MRO and Mars Odyssey missions for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space in Denver built both orbiters. JPL built and operates the Mars Climate Sounder instrument. THEMIS was built and is operated by Arizona State University in Tempe. The Gamma Ray Spectrometer was built and is operated by the University of Arizona in Tucson. TOP IMAGE....The annotated area of Mars in this illustration holds near-surface water ice that would be easily accessible for astronauts to dig up. The water ice was identified as part of a map using data from NASA orbiters. LOWER IMAGE....This rainbow-colored map shows underground water ice on Mars. Cool colors represent less than one foot (30 centimeters) below the surface; warm colors are over two feet (60 centimeters) deep. Sprawling black zones on the map represent areas where a landing spacecraft would sink into fine dust. The outlined box represents the ideal region to send astronauts for them to be able to dig up water ice. The map was created by combining data from multiple NASA orbiters, including the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and its Mars Climate Sounder instrument; Mars Odyssey and its Thermal Emission Imaging System; and the Mars Global Surveyor.

Tired of Putting Up with Hard Water?
Almost ninety percent of homes in the US have hard water. While the exact chemical composition of the water is different from one area to another, the results are the same. A terrible taste, stains on all the porcelain, appliances that require premature replacing, and irritated skin are just a few of the hassles that hard water brings to a household. The costs of bottled drinking water, extra detergents, lotions, and new appliances are staggering, as are the frequent plumbing repairs. More Money than Realized Hard water affects more than just drinking water and appliances. Clothing is another cost that becomes exorbitant when hard water is present. The extra detergent to get clothing clean is only one added cost. The water also breaks down the fabrics, fades the colors, makes seams fray, causes pills on sweaters and jackets, and makes clothing scratchy. Clothing needs to be replaced earlier than expected because it stretches, becomes ruined, and looks drab. Furniture is also damaged by hard water. puretec water becomes dry, which can cause splintering, warping, peeling, and fading. If the damaged is noticed early enough, it may be counteracted with oils and sealants. That will also add to the monthly expenses but may avoid replacing the furniture. Carpets, flooring, fabrics, and upholstery also fades and breaks down because cleaning is done with the same hard water. Enough! Once homeowners add up all the costs of dealing with hard water, the situation is unacceptable. There is a cost-effective and long-lasting solution. Getting a phoenix water softener system installed will eliminate all the hassles, replacements, and costs associated with hard water. The first step is an assessment by an experienced company. The hard water in Phoenix is caused by naturally occurring magnesium bicarbonates and elevated levels of calcium and minerals. tucson water company is important in determining what system will work best in the home. A system will be recommended based on average water usage, the size of the home, and the number of occupants. High-efficiency units are available in four models that range from the capacity to handle a small home with one to three occupants to one with up to ten occupants. ge water softener on each model is twenty-five years. The return on the investment is high, with many people enjoying a full return within one to two years. Saving time and money by eliminating extra cleaners and detergents and freeing the family from related skin irritations are well worth the initial cost.
