The glorious white gypsum sand dunes at White Sands National Monument south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Located nearby the Army military test facility at White Sands Missile Range, the height of summer is a scorching time to visit any desert. Dunes dominate the area, although scrubby vegetation and scattered blades of grass do pop through. If you watch long enough, you might be able to spot a beetle or lizard race across an open patch of ground.
