Barro Selvagem - experiência com alunas do ateliê

Oi gente! Decidi criar um diário sobre meus caminhos com a cerâmica. Registrar minhas investigações, aprendizados, compartilhamentos e etc, dispondo esses registros de forma a contribuir coletivamente com pesquisas independentes. Lê-se, fora da academia. Mãe, antes de concluir a graduação, vi o ambiente acadêmico e de pesquisa cada vez mais distante, e toda a validação e oportunidades que ele oferece. No entanto, a vontade de seguir no caminho do ensino e pesquisa permanece. Quem sabe possamos estar, ser e contribuir apesar de. <3  

Aqui segue o primeiro relato, bem aleatório, mas o mais recente de colheita e beneficiamento de um barro selvagem local. Minha história com a cerâmica e com investigação de materiais locais, formas primitivas de queima e outros processos vem de muito tempo, mas uma outra hora conto sobre e vou subindo os registros mais antigos. <3

A coleta desse barro aí da foto acima aconteceu em um dia de campo sobre argilas e materiais locais com as alunas aqui do ateliê, Lu e Carol. 

Coletamos dois baldes de 4kg de material e levamos até o ateliê onde foi possível investigar melhor, ensaiando um teste simples de plasticidade (com a formação de um cordão e seu arqueamento). 

Pelas características de umidade que o material apresentava, optamos pelo processo de beneficiamento lento à úmido.  

Quebramos os torrões maiores em pedaços pequenos, de aproximadamente 2-3cm, dispomos dentro de uma bandeja rasa e expomos ao sol durante alguns dias (2 dias são o suficiente) para que secassem muito bem. A reidratação se deu no início da tarde (uns 5 dias depois do início da secagem). A hora do dia para fazer essa reidratação é bem importante, pois o processo fica mais fácil e mais eficiente quando o material está BEM seco. No final da tarde, por exemplo, o material ficou exposto por muito mais tempo a um calor muito maior (sol e vento) durante todo o dia. Se optássemos pelo primeiro horário da manhã, a umidade estaria significantemente mais alta por ter passado a noite exposto à uma umidade maior, seja por sereno ou umidade relativa que aumenta na noite/madrugada.

Estando o material bem seco, foi vertida uma quantidade de água para cobrir-lo em excesso em mais ou menos uns 3 dedos de altura. Então deixaos descansando para uma boa reidratação por algumas horas (30 min é mínimo observado). O material desagregou muito bem, mas ainda sim utilizei uma hélice de batedeira de cozinha acoplada à uma furadeira para misturar melhor. Isso pode ser dispensável, depende do bom senso/intuição. A consistência ficou parecida como a de um iogurte encorpado. 

Passei na peneira malha 10 (aquelas encontradas em agro shops) e depois na malha 18 (peneira comum de cozinha, com abertura de orifício de 1mm). O material passante foi vertido, uma parte e uma lona grossa (se você optar por esse modo, cubra a parte de cima, fazendo um sanduíche) e a outra em uma placa de gesso (de aproximadamente 4cm de espessura). Utilizei duas superfícies por questão de quantidade. No gesso, é interessante ir virando conforme a massa vai descolando do lado em contato com ele e fazer furos com o dedo em toda extensão para ajudar a ter uma secagem mais rápida e homogênea. O tempo de secagem até uma umidade próxima do ideal demandou quase 2 dias. 

Cada argila tem uma capacidade distinta de absorção de água e quantidade especifica para que se estabeleça uma boa plasticidade (ponto que não gruda mais tanto nas mãos, no caso de modalgem manual). Esse barrose mostrou  muito plástico, com alta capacidade de absorção de água e partículas muito finas. Essa constatação se dá de modo empírico por sensações táteis e pelo peso/volume. É uma massa bem compacta e com resistência considerável no ínicio da sova, apesar do excesso de umidade. 

O barro foi acondicionado em saco plástico grosso. O peso resultante do processo foi de aproximadamente 5,5kg de barro úmido.

Agora com ma massa pronta, fareoms pequenos ensaios para avaliar retração de secagem, retração de queima, resistência a cru, temperatura adequada de queima, etc. Em breve posto mais relatos e o resultado dos testes.  <3

Pink! This Yunomi from the collection @theleachpottery is made from two types of clay from my local area, the body is Saltburn clay and the bright pink slip is from my local woods at Kilburn right next to the White Horse. I have processed the Saltburn clay slightly less on this one leaving in stone inclusions to create planned texture but also to allow the clay to naturally pit and bloat to add an uncontrolled element to the work. Both are fired to around 1100c. There are two Earthenware Yunomi like this one in the collection and they signal the start of a new direction that I am exploring in my work. I am becoming more conscious of my impact on the environment as a potter and I am searching for ways to create work with exclusively local materials that I harvest. I’m really enjoying learning more about wood firing my pottery. These five pieces are my first tests of the clay I dug up recently. They fired into a beautiful earthy red. Each one has varying amounts of grog mixed into the clay body. I used crushed terra cotta as grog with a range of 0-40%. A couple ended up with hair line cracks and all but one of them broke under the force of my hands. Through this experiment I learned that this clay seems to be strongest with 10% grog added.
