There's a lotta valid criticism to level at horror as a genre or horror movies but there aren't a lot of people qualified to deliver said criticisms much less sweeping statements about where horror is or isn't going, or what is new or what is old.
It's not impossible and I've seen some excellent critical writing, but the vast majority I encounter falls into either (1) "this person seems to be too invested in horror to think critically" or (2) "it's obvious this person is making a sweeping generalization about horror with at best a passing awareness of some mainstream stories or podcasts, because there's a whole bunch of content fitting the criteria of what is supposedly lacking."
And personally the latter is more frustrating to me because the former is just kinda, whatever, they'll give my recommendations a shot, but the latter is dismissing out of hand the idea something could change their minds. It's like yeah if you throw out a bunch of complexity you sure can reduce horror to mundane binaries, and then just grant more complex value to anything you like and it looks like there's just a handful of special new ideas, but that's just being purposefully blind to stuff just outta personal distaste.
Not to say I'm the grand arbiter but I like to take my stories on their own terms, and I'm fully prepared to give credit to a movie that looks like absolute dogshit filmed on VHS just for the potential of seeing a new mind at work.
Mostly I got thinking of this after watching Tumbbad which has so much going on inside it while being a full fat, head on horror movie, but also a fairy tale and a metaphor and a generational story and so on. And it's just gorgeous and it made me remember every last this or that about horror that ever frustrated me because it's so fucking beautiful and complex and I have zero doubts if dismissing or generalizing about horror stuff saw it.
Horror is not faultless or some immutable icon, but just fuck am I sick of hearing about it from down the bridge of a nose instead of the heart.
