As the label says, it's Elenco's FM-88K. The core of this FM radio is the surface mount IC (a TDA7088) on the back, which came pre-soldered; it does most of the radio functions and is tuned by the varactor diode just below it; the yellow button scans through stations while the red button resets to the low end of the FM spectrum. Just as on the other one, things are amplified by the LM386 across from it. There's a left-over capacitor that you could install across the amplifier to boost the gain by another x10, but it's quite loud enough already.
I've done a quick scan across the dial for stations, and it's definitely picking some up; the spacing of the loops in the coil down at L2 can affect exact tuning, so I need to break out a second radio and double-check things — make sure it's going to the edges of the dial — but I'm pretty happy with it right now.
My father in law — an electrical engineer and radio ham — sent a couple of little electronics kits to me. They look like they'll be fun to put together. Nothing too fancy, just little IC-based AM and FM radios, but they're the nice Elenco ones with well-labeled boards and big instruction books. I've been wanting a nice, relaxing build for a while!

DRO - State-Of-The-Art Frequency Timer
Dielectric Resonator Oscillators - also known as DRO’s - use dielectric-material-resonator as a frequency stabilizing element which has a large dielectric constant and a low dissipation factor. The dielectric resonator produces steady-state oscillation at the frequency of the resonator.
Modern-day dielectric resonator oscillators are made using state-of-the-art thin film hybrid micro-circuit technology that gives it the required ruggedness and durability to function under a heavy-duty environment.
DROs are highly stable and have a low-temperature coefficient of frequency drift and are considered to be better than the cavity oscillators, diode oscillators or a voltage-controlled oscillator-VCO. Electrical tuning can be used to compensate for the frequency drift (if any).
DROs are high Q oscillators and hence yield a low rate of energy loss and oscillations die out very slowly. Q factors show how underdamped an oscillator or a resonator is. Therefore the frequency pulling factor is also better than other free-running oscillator references.
Dielectric resonator oscillators are less than 5MHz peak to peak at a 1.5:1 VSWR varying through all the phases.
