To say that Twitter’s actions are disgraceful is an understatement. Whether or not they comply with Twitter’s API terms of service, the lack of any advanced notice or explanation to developers is unprofessional and an unrecoverable breach of trust between it and its developers and users.
Twitter’s actions also show a total lack of respect for the role that third-party apps have played in the development and success of the service from its earliest days. Twitter was founded in 2006, but it wasn’t until the iPhone launched about a year later that it really took off, thanks to the developers who built the first mobile apps for the service.
The fact that Elon Musk’s Twitter has cut off third-party developers isn’t surprising. Franky, I expected it sooner, but I didn’t expect it to be done with an utter lack of respect for the developers who played such a critical role in the service’s success for more than a decade. The developers of Twitterrific, Tweetbot, and every other app that has lost access to Twitter’s APIs deserved better than a silent flip of the switch late one Thursday night.

A Twitterrific for Mastodon?
I’m heartbroken that Twitterrific had to die and I don’t suppose Iconfactory plans to build a Mastodon app. Twitterrific developer Craig Hockenberry mentioned in his blog post that the new Mastodon apps are excellent to help with the transition but they ignore the scale and possibilities of ActivityPub.
I can understand that. I mean, Mastodon is clearly the flagship ActivityPub client right now but its nature means you can see status updates or posts from people posting using other environments such as Pleroma, Misskey, CalcKey, Friendica, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Takahe, micro.blog, etc which are not Mastodon and not fully compatible with the Mastodon API, but they kind of work similarly in some ways yet at the same time quite differently as well.
Should one build an all encompassing Activity Pub app? I don’t think so because it would end up as a big confusing hot mess. Apps optimized for individual services are still the way to go  in my opinion. I’m still hopeful that there’s an Iconfactory take that can accommodate the Fediverse because the team has always managed to come up with innovative designs and user experience. They’ve never been afraid of experimenting with different approaches to the same problem.
Maybe they have something in mind already or secretly have been building something, maybe they haven’t. Given the response they gave to being abruptly shut out of Twitter, maybe they’re going to take some time before deciding on their next step.
Right now there’s already plenty of upcoming third party Mastodon apps to choose from for iOS even if they’re still in TestFlight, not to mention existing ones as well as web apps that can work across platforms, but a buffet of choices never stopped new ones from appearing.

This is actually the first time I've taken Ollie out of its box.
Oh well. I will miss Twitterific for the art of Mac and iOS app it represented. But I had already been gradually finding Twitter a bit noisy before Musk, and been intentionally limiting and controlling how much attention I put there. This is now one more reason (of so many) to stay out.
Like Hockenberry though, I am looking forward to seeing ActivityPub evolve.

Well, this is heartbreaking:
Twiterrific, the app I used to browse Twitter for years, is being closed down after undocumented changes in the twitter 3rd party API is making it not work and the Twitterrific devs couldn't manage to get any word from Twitter about what's going on for weeks.
Other Twitter client apps are going through the same issues, and even if there hasn't been any official communication on the matter, the word of mouth is the Twitter is just killing any way of consuming its content that's not the official site or apps.
This is bleak as hell.

The Iconfactory
The latest update to Linea Sketch is now available! From textures to thumbnail cropping, version 4.3 is packed with clever new features to make sketching on your iPad easier and more fun than ever.
By now I think you all know about my deep love for The Iconfactory. They are the brains behind Twitterrific — may Ollie rest in peace — and Wallaroo. But they also make this amazing drawing app called Linea Sketch!
The Iconfactory also does design work and consultations. They recently did the artwork for Stream’s feature in the App Store . They’re extremely talented and so easy to work with. Give them a shout if you needs some design work!
If you’re an artist you should give it a try and see how you like it.
Thanksgiving FYI
Hi, I’m Jim, an enthusiastic and dedicated home cook with more than a dozen Thanksgivings under my belt. I’ve hosted everything from small friendsgivings to giant multi-family affairs in foreign kitchens and I’ve assembled some strategies to help make the day great.
Jim is an internet pal and extremely nice fellow.
Thanksgiving FYI is Jim’s Thanksgiving newsletter chock full of tips and recipes for, you guessed it, Thanksgiving!
Who doesn’t like a good thanksgiving recipe?
I’d imagine you can still sign up and get everything he’s already published if you’d like and at $5 it’s a real steal! You even get access to a Slack so you can chat with others about the big day! 🦃

It’s not quite the end of Tumblr, but when management is supposedly sending memos with the Lord Tennyson quote about having “loved and lost,” it doesn’t look like there’s much of a future.
I’ve had a Tumblr account for years and years and I cross post to it, like I do Mastodon, but I’ve never used it as my primary blog. I’d considered it multiple times but I was never happy with their fixed taxonomy. I like to publish my posts in a Y/M/D format and Tumblr doesn’t support that. They also don’t publish static HTML which is another strike against them.
I’m bummed out by the possibility of it disappearing. It’s one of those internet properties I’d like to see stick around. It’s also looks like they’re gonna drop ActivityPub. 😔
Jason Snell • Macworld
There’s no real way to gloss over the fact that Mac sales went down 34 percent versus the year-ago quarter. And yet, for some reason, Maestri and Cook got out their Tom Sawyer paintbrushes and got to work.
At some point hyper-growth will stop. It’s just the way it is. Of course Apple offsets this by raising prices, which isn’t a surprise.
I got my first M based Mac early last year and didn’t unwrap it and start using it until early summer because I felt that my x86 Mac was fine. Luckily I decided to take the plunge to M2 land because I went from being a Director back to being a Software Engineer.
For me I’d guess this M2 could easily go for five years before it feels sluggish, and who knows, maybe beyond that?
As I like to say. I’m not compiling Photoshop or Microsoft Word. I’m just compiling iOS Apps. Even big iOS apps written in Swift build super fast. I’d even wager an M1 MacBook Air would blow the doors off my old x86 based Mac. They’re fast!

Disney’s combined Disney Plus and Hulu streaming app is on the way. As part of its fourth-quarter earnings results, Disney announced it’s going to launch the new app in beta for bundle subscribers in December, with the official launch coming in early spring 2024.
We are Hulu subscribers, Kim loves it. It makes me wonder how much it’ll change or will it literally be merging what Hulu offers directly into the app? So far Max seems to be fine with this strategy, although I’d prefer to have HBO content front and center instead of the mix of items we have today. Here’s hoping they do a great job combining the properties. I think they will.

a wide range of third party apps like Twitterrific, Tweetbot, Echofon, and many others had been disabled.
There’s been no official word from Twitter about what’s going on, but that’s unsurprising since the new owner eliminated the employees dedicated to keeping the API up and running smoothly, including the developer evangelists who previously provided communication with third-parties.
We wouldn’t know whom to reach out to at Twitter even if such people existed. We’re in the dark just as much as you are, sadly.

The death of third party Twitter apps
On Friday, 13 January 2023, Twitter turned off access to most third party Twitter clients. People who used apps like Tweetbot, Twitterrific, and Echofon were suddenly shut out of their apps, faced with a screen that told them there’s an authentication issue.
It’s not the first time third party apps were given the shaft by the company but this time there were no warnings, no official statements acknowledging the matter, no explanations. It’s as if millions of voices were suddenly silenced.
While there had been internal discussions about the ban, it wasn’t until almost a week later that there was an official word and even then there was no public communication that third party apps are no longer allowed. Engadget found out by diving into Twitter’s developer terms which were only just updated yesterday.
Twitterrific developer Craig Hockenberry was rightly incensed about the move, and his Iconfactory colleague Sean Heber wrote about having to shut down the app after 16 years. It’s absolutely clear that Twitter is no longer the same company as it was a year ago or even six months ago.
Unlike companies such as Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, or TikTok, Twitter had always been reliant on third party apps and solutions even near the beginning, which was why the 2012 API restrictions were met with massive backlash to which Twitter then relented. This time, though, no such luck.

Twitter
Twitter (origin: to tweet – to Twitter) is a social service on the Internet that allows the user to disseminate information in real-time. The special feature is that only 140 characters can be used. The prerequisite for using Twitter is the creation of a Twitter account. Twitter is well-known among social services and is available free of charge.
Tweets
Twitter contains small pieces of information called tweets. A tweet can contain a maximum of 140 characters. With the ability to include hyperlinks in tweets, Twitter users can post photos, videos, and links to directly in tweets. When a tweet is posted, it’s shared with the account’s followers in the NewsFeed in real time. If the followers like the tweet, it is usually shared by means of a retweet.
The principle
The principle of communication between Twitter users is based on following or subscribing to other Twitter users. If you find a Twitter account that is posting interesting information, you can track what it has posted (tweeted). “The pursued” does not necessarily have to follow back.
The followers are called followers. The number of followers can be classified as a measure of the notoriety or trustworthiness of an account. The more followers an account has, the more trustworthy the source of the information that was tweeted. Conversely, the following accounts are referred to as followings.
Among other things, private messages are offered, which can only be read by the addressee and not by his followers. For privacy reasons, accounts can be kept protected, i.e. not public. Only the followers see the posts that come from a protected account.
@-Sign
In order to strengthen communication between users, the Twitter service enabled dialogue between Twitter users themselves. The @ sign can be used to specifically address an account.
#hashtags
The hashtag setting has a special meaning on Twitter. The topic that affects the information content is emphasized. If a tweet is published on the topic of SEO, the hashtag SEO (#SEO) will be mentioned at the end of the tweet to clarify the topic in question. If a hashtag topic receives special attention within a country or worldwide, it is traded as a trending topic. Trending topics appear on the Twitter home page and in each account’s profile summaries.
Technology
Twitter is based on the Scala programming language and uses a framework known as Bootstrap for the application interface. Bootstrap is an open-source project and is open to the general public for further development. The integration of Twitter into websites and applications is easily possible via the Twitter API.
Twitter Services
In order to make Twitter easier to use, many services are offered on the Internet which, for example, enable multiple Twitter accounts to be merged or automated replies to be provided. The best-known so-called Twitter clients include Twitterrific, HootSuite, TweetDeck and Echofon.
Twitter in the company
Twitter is also increasingly used in companies as a communication tool. Examples have shown that Twitter is an excellent support and information channel between companies and customers since the reactions are real-time and companies can respond very quickly to support requests, for example.
Importance for SEO
The Twitter component plays a major role in the discussion about social signals in search engine optimization since they are real user signals. In addition, it can be used to increase the number of visitors to a website, since Twitter can spread information as an additional channel. Controlling the social signals via Twitter can be carried out using the web-based web analytics tool Fanpage Karma. A direct effect of Twitter use on search engine rankings has not been traced so far.
