Astronomers discover signs of life in a star’s explosive death

After a distant star’s explosive death, an active stellar corpse was the likely source of repeated energetic flares observed over several months – a phenomenon astronomers had never seen before, a Cornell-led team reports in new research published Nov. 15 in Nature.

The bright, brief flashes – as short as a few minutes in duration, and as powerful as the original explosion 100 days later – appeared in the aftermath of a rare type of stellar cataclysm that the researchers had set out to find, known as a luminous fast blue optical transient, or LFBOT.

Since their discovery in 2018, astronomers have speculated about what might drive such extreme explosions, which are far brighter than the violent ends massive stars typically experience, but fade in days instead of weeks. The research team believes the previously unknown flare activity, which was studied by 15 telescopes around the world, confirms the engine must be a stellar corpse: a black hole or neutron star.

“We don’t think anything else can make these kinds of flares,” said Anna Y. Q. Ho, assistant professor of astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. “This settles years of debate about what powers this type of explosion, and reveals an unusually direct method of studying the activity of stellar corpses.”

Ho is the first author of “Minutes-duration Optical Flares with Supernova Luminosities,” published with more than 70 co-authors who helped characterize the LFBOT officially labeled AT2022tsd and nicknamed “the Tasmanian devil,” and the ensuing pulses of light seen roughly a billion light years from Earth.

Ho wrote the software that flagged the event in September 2022, while sifting through a half-million changes, or transients, detected daily in an all-sky survey conducted by the Califrnia-based Zwicky Transient Facility.

Then in December 2022, while routinely monitoring the fading explosion, Ho and collaborators Daniel Perley of Liverpool John Moores University in England, and Ping Chen of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, met to review new observations conducted and analyzed by Ping – a set of five images, each spanning several minutes. The first showed nothing, as expected, but the second picked up light, followed by an intensely bright spike in the middle frame that quickly vanished.

“No one really knew what to say,” Ho recalled. “We had never seen anything like that before – something so fast, and the brightness as strong as the original explosion months later – in any supernova or FBOT. We’d never seen that, period, in astronomy.”

To further investigate the abrupt rebrightening, the researchers engaged partners who contributed observations from more than a dozen other telescopes, including one equipped with a high-speed camera. The team combed through earlier data and worked to rule out other possible light sources. Their analysis ultimately confirmed at least 14 irregular light pulses over a 120-day period, likely only a fraction of the total number, Ho said.

“Amazingly, instead of fading steadily as one would expect, the source briefly brightened again – and again, and again,” she said. “LFBOTs are already a kind of weird, exotic event, so this was even weirder.”

Exactly what processes were at work – perhaps a black hole funneling jets of stellar material outward at close to the speed of light – continues to be studied. Ho hopes the research advances longstanding goals to map how stars’ properties in life may predict the way they’ll die, and the type of corpse they produce.

In the case of LFBOTs, rapid rotation or a strong magnetic field likely are key components of their launching mechanisms, Ho said. It’s also possible that they aren’t conventional supernovas at all, instead triggered by a star’s merger with a black hole.

“We might be seeing a completely different channel for cosmic cataclysms,” she said.

The unusual explosions promise to provide new insight into stellar lifecycles typically only seen in snapshots of different stages – star, explosion, remnants – and not as part of a single system, Ho said. LFBOTs may present an opportunity to observe a star in the act of transitioning to its afterlife.

“Because the corpse is not just sitting there, it’s active and doing things that we can detect,” Ho said. “We think these flares could be coming from one of these newly formed corpses, which gives us a way to study their properties when they’ve just been formed.”

In einem Artikel der Berliner Morgenpost wird die Sorge geäußert, dass die etwa 300 Atomsprengköpfe für U-Boote und für Kampfbomber in Frankreich und die etwa 120 Raketen Großbritanniens und die 180 Atombomben vom Typ B-61 der USA in Europa nicht ausreichen, um die Welt zu vernichten - ähm sorry, dort heißt es natürlich "Europa zu verteidigen".

Jedenfalls sagte der Chef der Europäischen Volkspartei (EVP), CSU-Vize Manfred Weber, jetzt gegenüber der Morgenpost Redaktion: "Letztlich braucht die EU dauerhaft eine nukleare Abschreckung – innerhalb und ergänzend zur Nato".

"Die europäischen Staaten müssen schnellstmöglich selbst verteidigungsfähig werden." Das sagt nicht nur Weber, denn hinter solchen Forderungen stehen auch Ex-Außenminister Joschka Fischer und der Politikwissenschaftler Herfried Münkler. Sie fordern ebenfalls eine eigene atomare Abschreckung der EU.

Zwei Jahre Kriegsgeschrei haben scheinbar alle europäische Zurückhaltung auf Null reduziert. Jegliche Überlegung zu den Folgen eines Atomkriegs und eventuell mögliche diplomatische Schritte zur Vermeidung eines Weltungergangs werden einfach ausgeblendet.

Dabei gilt weiterhin die Maxime des Kalten Kriegs: Wer zuerst schießt, stirbt als Zweiter. In welchem Bunker haben die oben Genannten ihr Gehirn abgegeben?

Do szkoły muzycznej pojechałam jednak wcześniej, na miejscu byłam parę minut przed ósmą. Pan w portierni powiedział, że pierwsza dziś przyjechałam xD. Ranne ptaszki tak mają. Ale nie no, sympatyczny typ. W domu byłam jeszcze później niż sądziłam bo wstąpiłam jeszcze do biedry po zakupy. Coś mnie tkhęło żeby popatrzeć na książki, bo raz na jakiś czas rzucają coś wartego uwagi... I jest! Jo Nesbø, Pierwszy śnieg, obie części, razem 22 zł. Myślałam że posikam się ze szczęścia xD.

I mniej radosna nowina... Istnieje możliwość, że wraca mi okres 💀. Doczytałam dzisiaj w ulotce, że lek na ADHD, który biorę, może mieć wpływ na hormony. Ostatnia miesiączka skończyła mi się 25 listopada i nie pojawiła do teraz. To znaczy, teraz też jeszcze nie mam okresu, ale czuję taki charakterystyczny (u mnie, nie wiem czy inni tak mają) ciężar w okolicy macicy i ten "mięsny" ból (XD czy ktokolwiek wie co mam na myśli?). Co gorsza, skończyły mi się leki przeciwkrwotoczne, a że nie miałam od pół roku okresu to nie przedłużałam recepty, a nie wiem czy da się to zrobić telefonicznie. No nic, muszę zadzwonić do hematologa w spróbować albo umówić się do kogoś na cito, nawet prywatnie. Bez tego leku nici ze stuprocentowej frekwencji w maju. Nawet nie chodzi o postanowienie, po prostu muszę być już na każdej lekcji bo inaczej nie zdam, a krwotoki skutecznie uniemożliwiają chodzenie do szkoły.

Der Weg zur und über die Grenze nach Zimbabwe 

03.09.2022 – Mosambik/Zimbabwe - [Tobi]: 

Wieder eine Grenze vor uns. Ich bin da immer sehr nervös, ist man da ja immer der Gunst der Beamten ausgeliefert. Heute ging der Wecker um 6.00 Uhr, damit wir rechtzeitig weg kommen. Zelt abbauen, Auto beladen und die Schlaglochpiste wieder zurück bis nach Inchope (1 Stunde Schotter, 1 Stunde Schlaglochautobahn) um dann die schön ausgebaute Autobahn bis zur Grenze zu nehmen.

Auf der Buckelpiste haben wir mit der Drohne versucht, die Schlaglöcher festzuhalten und flogen während der Fahrt. Sama am Steuer und ich am Controller, um die Drohne zu fliegen. Als ich dann mal mit der Drohne vor Flug um die Fahrt von vorne zu filmen passierte es irgendwann. In einer heiklen rückwärts- bergauf- Busausweich-Situation landete sie dann im Baum… 

Der Baum stand direkt an einer kleinen Siedlung. Ich stieg aus und musste mich erstmal orientieren, in welcher der vielen Bäume sie überhaupt gelandet ist. Natürlich habe ich erst im falschen Baum gesucht. Ich hatte die Drohne nämlich nur vom Bildschirm aus gesteuert und nicht nach draußen geschaut. Glücklicherweise lief die Kamera aber noch und zeigte durch die Blätter hindurch auf die Straße.

Da ich anscheinend ziemlich auffällig mit meiner Aktion war, bemerkten die Dorfbewohner schnell, dass ich was suchte. Alle Kinder kamen angerannt und wollten wissen, warum ich denn in die Bäume schaute. Ab und an konnte ich ein Kind durchs Bildschirm der Kamera laufen sehen, konnte aber nicht das Kind ausmachen, welches dort stand.

Als dann aber mal ein Taxi ins Bild kam, sah ich, dass dieses Taxi locker 50 Meter entfernt fuhr. Nun wusste ich, in welchen Baum ich suchen musste. Ein kleiner Junge fand dann auch auf Anhieb das arme Ding zwischen den Ästen hängen und noch bevor ich zum Stamm kam, kletterte bereits ein Teenager hinauf und rettete sie.

Glück gehabt, das war bereits der zweite Absturz.

Als wir in Inchope ankamen, tankten wir das Auto nochmal voll und steuerten in Chimoio einen anständigen Supermarkt an. Da wir noch ziemlich viel Metical (örtliche Währung) in Bar hatten, machten wir einen Großeinkauf und zahlten auch beim Tanken bar. 

Leider hatten wir dann immer noch 8000 Met in der Tasche. Auf dem Parkplatz sprach uns ein windiger Typ an, ob wir Geld wechseln wollen. Ja, schon komisch, aber ich rechnete so bald vor der Grenze mit solchen Geldwechslern. Also ja: "Gib mir deinen Wechselkurs und wir schauen mal."

Er gab uns den normalen Wechselkurs und hätte uns die 120 US Dollar dafür gegeben. Hätte. Ja, Ihr ahnt es schon, Tobi hat sich abziehen lassen. Mitten aufm Parkplatz.

Irgendwann waren es natürlich zwei Typen und die haben andauernd die Scheine hin und her geschoben. Doch jedes Mal, wenn ich sicher den richtigen Betrag gezählt hatte, hatten sie wieder einen anderen Grund, weswegen sie das Bündel nehmen mussten... Ja, am Ende gaben wir denen die 8000 Met und hatten nur 75$ in der Hand.

Zwischendurch hatte ich sogar gesehen, wie der Typ einmal aus der Hinterhand ein weiteres Bündel an das Übergebene dran legte, aber ich fand nicht den Moment, die Aktion abzubrechen und dachte, ich habe die Situation unter Kontrolle. Naja, soweit dazu. Ich durfte mir im Auto auf jeden Fall was anhören.

Trotzdem war das Auto vollständig, uns wurde nichts weiter geklaut, das Auto hatte ich nämlich extra im Auge und es waren "nur" 50$ futsch. Für 1,5 Monate quer durch Afrika schonmal ne gute Bilanz.

Ab zur Grenze.

Gelesen hatte ich vorher, dass unsere Richtung eigentlich problemlos ist. Mosambik entlässt einen nach 10 Minuten und Zimbabwe 1,5 Stunden im Schnitt. Andersherum ist es der Horror, das kann locker auch 10 Stunden bei der Einreise nach Moz dauern, da die wohl sehr auf Bestechung beharren.

Doch es lief alles glatt, immerhin hier. Zum Grenzübergang durften wir erstmal kilometerweit LKWs überholen. "Agenten" quatschten uns direkt am Grenzposten an und versuchten uns unbemerkt ihre "Dienste" für einen schnelleren Grenzübergang anzubieten. Wir lehnten jedes Mal dankend ab. Wir würden es auch ohne deren Hilfe schaffen. Man musste nur echt vorsichtig sein, wen man da abwimmelte. Die Agenten liefen nämlich zwischen den Beamten rum, die auch nicht immer förmlich gekleidet waren. 

Doch die Ausreise ging wirklich entspannt vonstatten. Zwar wirkte der Grenzposten auf mosambikanischer Seite eher wie eine Sportsbar (vor der Theke viel Gewusel… vermischt aus Agenten und Reisenden, die wirr durcheinander redeten und immer wieder riefen, wie schnell sie alles organisieren könnten. Hinter der Theke, die Beamten die locker lässig in ihren Stühlen saßen und nebenbei Fußball schauten), aber dafür waren wir nach 10 Minuten mit leichten Chaos durch. 

Die Einreise gestaltete sich da schon etwas langwieriger. Erstmal 20 Minuten anstehen, um nach einem Formular zu fragen. Formular ausgefüllt. Wieder 30 Minuten angestellt. Als wir unsere Pässe vorzeigten und ein Visum für Double Entry beantragten, mussten wir zu einem persönlichen Interview beim Oberboss antanzen. 

Wir wollten ein Double Entry Visa, da wir in einem Monat nochmal für die Victoria Wasserfälle kurz ins Land wollen. Somit würden wir uns Kosten und den großen Prozess sparen, aber der Oberboss wollte den Grund dafür im persönlichen Gespräch erfahren. Natürlich fragt er nicht direkt. Mit viel Laberlaber und frauenfeindlichen Scherzen befand er uns dann letztendlich für würdig. Ich hab schon mit großen Bestechungswünschen gerechnet, als wir vom öffentlichen Bereich in ein Hinterzimmer geführt wurden. Aber nein, er war fast der Einzige, der nicht nach einer Nettigkeit gefragt hat. Immerhin sind in Zimbabwe alle hilfsbereit und locker drauf gewesen und wir konnten die Leute, sowie Formulare auch wieder halbwegs verstehen. Denn die Amtssprache wechselte an der Grenze nun von portugiesisch zu (unter anderem) englisch. 

Ein weiterer Punkt war noch das Auto. Für Menschen ein Visum zu erhalten ist ja das eine, aber ein Auto mit massig Inhalt durch den Zoll zu bringen ist nochmal genauso stressig.

Kennzeichen, Hersteller, Modell, Chassi- und Motornummer, Wert, Baujahr, das geht ja alles noch, aber heute wurde ich nach dem Herstellungsland gefragt. Uff, ja, Land Rover sind ausschließlich in UK handgefertigt, das ist quasi ein Werbeslogan. Aber wisst Ihr wo Euer VW oder Audi gefertigt wurde? Ein Werk in Deutschland, oder doch eins in Polen, Ungarn, Spanien oder gar noch weiter.... Aber die Dame war geduldig und es war auch nicht stressig. "Bitte zahlen Sie noch Straßensteuer, Versicherung und CO2-Steuer an diesem Schalter...." Immer ein hin und her, besonders weil ich diese bereits in meiner regulären Versicherung inklusive hatte, was auch noch eingängig geprüft werden musste. Somit hatten wir 30$ gespart…musste ich ja wieder vom Mittag rein holen.

Als es dann dunkel wurde, waren wir entlassen. 

Die Ausfahrt ist auch immer noch so ein Thema, da dann erst auffällt, welches Dokument/Schritt wir ausgelassen haben. Aber alles war in Ordnung. Es gab mit den Beamten wieder Scherze hier, Scherze da, sie fragten wieder nach was zu trinken oder Geld… danach waren wir raus.

Und ich bin stolz, sagen zu können, dass wir wieder nichts an Bestechungsgeld rausgegeben haben. Es wird zwar meist höflich gefragt, aber die Beamten sind auch mit der Antwort zufrieden und behindern den weiteren Prozess dann nicht.

Nach weiteren 20 Minuten durch die Stadt, waren wir bei unserer AirBnB Unterkunft angekommen. Ein Häuschen am Stadtrand, vermietet von Horst aus Berlin.

Ich denke, der Familie seiner Frau gehört das Grundstück und wenn diese in Deutschland sind, wird das Haus vermietet. 

Glücklich, dann die Fahrt abgeschlossen zu haben, wollten wir das Auto auf dem Grundstück parken, wird es ja von einem Zauntor geschützt. Doch leider ist der Carport ganze 10 cm zu niedrig. Langsam fuhren wir Stück für Stück drunter um zu sehen wie weit wir mit unseren Aufbauten auf dem Dach drunter passten. Es half nichts. Wir waren einfach zu hoch. Unsere große Box musste runter… dabei war die doch besonders toll festgeschraubt. Also nochmal 10 Minuten Handwerker spielen und dann unsere wichtigsten Sachen ins Haus gebracht. Und tatsächlich! Danach passten wir wirklich haargenau rein.

Debby steht nun zu 3/4 unter dem Dach und mit dem Hintern direkt am Zaun. Dafür bleiben wir hier ein paar Tage, besichtigen dann das erste Mal zu Fuß die Stadt Mutare und mit dem Auto auch das Umland.

Jórvík is a trading strategy game set in the world of the Vikings who settled in Britain and is a reinterpretation of the games "Kaispeicher" and "Die Speicherstadt".

The game is played over the four seasons, which offer an increasing number of incoming events to which the players must react. Depending on the number of players, cards are revealed from a deck and brought into play, in which players can express interest with their respective Viking figures according to a certain scheme.

These can be ships with valuable cargoes of goods, craftsmen who process the goods and thus generate victory points, merchants to sell goods, scalds, warriors, oracles, festivals and other elements, each of which has different abilities and meanings during the other phases of the game.

The aim is to gain the most victory points at the end. This can be achieved in many different ways. Fulfilling craft conditions, gaining a high level of power through warrior cards to successfully fend off attacks by the Picts, collecting multiplying feast cards or through the beguiling songs of skalds, which grant a high bonus for certain card constellations.

If a player was successful in the bidding phase, he can decide whether to buy a new card that has been brought into play and to which he is then entitled. If he can pay for it with the corresponding amount of coins, the respective card effect is triggered.  For example, he receives the goods loaded on ships and can then redistribute them to his advantage, or he receives new warriors for his defense, etc.

It is important to understand that you cannot get all the good cards.  This is because the other players will try to obtain a valuable card themselves by cleverly placing their pieces, or they will inflate the purchase price by feigning interest in their opponents.

The game is not particularly fast-paced and for the impatient there may be too little action, but in the last phases of the game, before the end, there can be dramatic turns. This means that players who have been relatively far behind so far can gain a lot of bonus points to turn the tide.

You should also have a relatively high frustration threshold, as you really don't always get the cards you want or can use for your game strategy. You should be flexible and possibly switch to a different victory condition if things don't go the way you thought they would.

Gespielt wird über die vier Jahreszeiten, welche einen steigenden Grad  an eingehenden Ereignissen bieten, auf welche die Spieler reagieren  müssen. Das können Schiffe mit wertvoller Ladung von Waren sein, Handwerker,  welche die Waren verarbeiten und dadurch Siegpunktegenerieren, Händler  zum Verkaufen von Waren, Skalden, Krieger, Orakel, Feste und weitere Elemente, welche jeweils unterschiedliche Fähigkeiten und Bedeutungen während der anderen Spielphasen haben.

Ziel ist es am Ende, die meisten Siegpunkte zu erringen. Das kann auf  vielfältige Art passieren. Das Erfüllen von Handwerksbedingungen, das  Erlangen einer hohen Schlagkraft durch Kriegerkarten um Angriffe der  Pikten erfolgreich abzuwehren, durch das Sammeln von sich  multiplizierenden Fest-Karten oder durch die betörenden Gesänge von Skalden, welche für bestimmte Kartenkonstellationen einen hohen Bonus gewähren.

War ein Spieler der Bieterphase erfolgreich, so kann er sich  entscheiden, ob er eine neu ins Spiel gebrachte Karte, auf welche er  dann ein Anrecht hat, zu kaufen. Kann er sie mit der entsprechenden  Menge an Münzen bezahlen, wird der jeweilige Karteneffekt ausgelöst.  Z.B. erhält er die Waren, welche auf Schiffen geladen sind und kann  diese dann zu seinem Vorteil umverteilen, oder er erhält neue Krieger  für seine Verteidigung u.s.w.

Wichtig ist zu verstehen, das man nicht alle guten Karten erhalten kann.  Denn die anderen Spieler werden durch geschicktes Platzieren ihrer  Figuren versuchen, selbst ein Anrecht auf eine wertvolle Karte zu  erhalten, oder sie schrauben den Kaufpreis durch vorgetäuschtes  Interesse für die Gegner in die Höhe.

Das Spiel ist nicht besonders schnell und für Ungeduldige vielleicht mit  zu wenig Aktion unterlegt, aber in den letzten Spielphasen, vor dem  Ende, kann es noch einmal zu dramatischen Wenden kommen. So, das  Spieler, welche bisher relativ weit zurücklagen, noch einmal viele  Bonuspunkte erlangen können, um das Blatt zu wenden.

Auch sollte man eine relativ hohe Frustrationsgrenze haben, da man  wirklich nicht immer die Karten bekommt, welche man möchte oder für  seine Spielstrategie gebrauchen kann. Man sollte flexibel sein und  eventuell auf eine andere Siegbedingung wechseln, falls es nicht so läuft, wie man es sich gedacht hat.

Page 21 & 23. ---- Toronto and Mimico Men Are Hard Hit By Demotions and Deductions --- MAY ASK FOR BOARD --- Special to The Star Ottawa, Aug. 17. - To be demoted from clerk at $120 a month to be call boy at 30 cents an hour; from a car checker at $120 to messenger at 50 cents an hour; to Five a ten per cent. cut on even the pittance still received and then to be threatened. with another ten per cent. cut. Therein lies the germ of the protest of the Brotherhood of Railway Employees against the threatened wage reduction on the Canadian railways.

In an upper room on Laurier Ave. four men sat yesterday afternoon, grappling with the problems. The unions involved in the brotherhood have been notified of a second ten per cent. cut. They have pretested. The railways are insistent and have applied for a board of conciliation, without which they cannot make the reduction effective.

The minister of labor has proffered a board. Specifically the clerical workers are directly affected, but all other unions have received the same notification. In the brotherhood there are the clerks in all railway departments, the freight handlers, the station employees such as baggagemen, etc., the porters, sleeping and dining car men, the steam ferry men, the classified and unclassified laborers, the roundhouse, and shop men, the store employees, the stationary enginemen and fire-men. None Highly Paid They are the lower-paid wage earners, not in the aristocracy of the railways, the conductors, engineers, firemen and brakemen. Their wages before the cut ranged from 150 to $150.

A. R. Mosher. president: J. G. McGuire, chairman central region; W. C. Smith, Chairman Atlantic region, and T. MacGregor, chairman of the western region, met in Mr. Mosher's office to figure it all out. The Star sat in.

"An appeal is made to us to take. this extra ten per cent. cut. Our people have done all they could; they can take no more without facing destitution. What with demotions and wage reductions hundreds of married men with families are putting in a full day's work and accepting pay lower than the relief paid out to their neighbors. In Winnipeg, for instance, men with families get as much as $60 a month, and have responsibility. We have scores of men getting only $50 and even $35, and carry- ing on; glad to be working, doing office boy and messenger jobs rather than go on relief. Surely it isn't fair, it isn't just to ask these men to make further sacrifices."

"Take Toronto, the Simcoe St. freight sheds," said Mr. Maguire. "They have taken the high rated work out of Toronto and are now having it done in Montreal by girls operating machines and getting $60 and $75 a month. And look what's happened to the men let out at Simcoe St., let out after years of faithful service."

He held out a list with scores of men whose normal rate of pay had been $50 to $150 and were now down well below the 5100 mark. These were the men fortunate to retain any kind of a job. There were others who had no jobs. Instancing a trans- shipping clerk getting $106, he had been reduced to $53, then there was a ten per cent cut, leaving him $47.50 on which to keep himself and family. Many were down to $50 a month, less than ten per cent. And all now threatened with still another ten per cent.

Western Cases "The public don't understand, they can't understand," said Mr. McGregor, producing western wage lists. "Our men are not highly paid, never have been highly paid. The demotions have cut them down to nothing. Look at this list."

"That isn't the whole story," said Mr. Smith, of Halifax. " Those are the basic rates for full time. Many of our men are only working part time. The men in the shops are getting about 10 days work a month And the freight handlers are only getting the old few hours. None of them have a chance to make any overtime."

Mr. McGuire produced a pay list for Mimico.

"Here's a typical example of what has happened," he said.

The senior bill clerk, formerly getting $131 had been demoted to be ear checker at $111. One of his clerks. was now a call boy at 30 cents an hour. The storeman who had $115 a month was glad to be a receiving checker at 53 cents an hour.

Prices Going Up "It is nice to ask the railway employees to carry their share of the burden of the industrial crisis. through which we are now passing," said Mr. Mosher. "But surely all reasonable people will agree that we cannot be expected to carry any mare. Is it right to ask men getting only $18.38 a month to take a further seduction of 10 per cent."

Will Go To Courts Senator James H. Murdock, vice-president of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, the organization of conductors, enginemen, firemen and brakemen, intimated that so far as they concerned they were prepared to go to the courts to sustain their refusal of the second ten per cent. cut and to claim compensation for the first cut.

"We claim that there has been legally taken from the men 10 per cent. of the basic wage rates as from February 1, up to and including March and April, and 20 per cent. of the basic rates from May 1 to the present," the senator said. "These monies were deducted without any agreement being in force between the companies and the railway unions. other than that continuing in force the base wage rate."

"An agreement is an agreement," the senator said. "We have had in effect 21 schedules affecting the various railway organizations. In those schedules were embodied rules and rates constituted by agreement be tween the men and the companies.

"On Feb. 4, 1932, we agreed to a reduction of 10 per cent. from the basic rates to be effective until Jan.. 1, 1931. The undertaking was also. agreed upon that prior to Jan. 31, 1933, we would get together and try to reach an agreement which would obtain after the expiration of the preceding one. That was not done. "The only agreement between the companies and the employees which existed on Feb. 1. 1933, was that of the basie wage rates, In spite of that the reductions of 10 per cent. continued to the end of April, and in May these deductions were increased by another 10 per cent.

"We have been advised that we can collect these money which, we aim, have been deducted in contravention of the agreement. This we propose to do, and instructions have been issued to that effect."
