1. tsukki appreciation time (once again)

he is a brilliant strategist. i'm not sure if i would put him on one level with kenma, but he's definitely close.

he is also rather manipulative, and i mean that in the best way. he knows how to make people act the way he wants them to, but he uses his great power responsibly. he knows exactly which buttons to push to get kageyama to play better.

yea my entire post was about him in week 10 but obviously i'm not done talking about him. i think i might make another, separate post to compare him to hinata and hoshiumi eventually because it's interesting that they all started out similarly ("too short" and thus needing to "make up for it") but all took slightly different routes.

this parallelism is perfectly captured in this panel. these three know the feeling of that tall, tall wall looming in front of them so intimately.

3. kageyama

i love kageyama so much. he is a "genius" when it comes to volleyball because that's something he genuinely cares about and invests time and energy in, but outside of that he is just a guy.

Haikyuu Book Club Week 10: 336 - 340

Udai Tenma vs. "It's just a club"

an important part of haikyuu is the debate over whether volleyball is just a club. tsukishima and kenma are two characters who (for most of the story) didn't consider volleyball to be all that important to them. kenma didn't even think it was particularly fun to play. on the other hand, we have characters like hinata and kageyama to whom volleyball means everything. it's pretty much the foundation of their identity as people. i don't think these two could even imagine a future without volleyball. especially hinata, whose main goal it is to stay on the court for as long as he possibly can.

to him, it was obvious that the player he looked up to all his life would feel the same way about volleyball. of course he would become a professional player after high school.

except, udai tenma didn't do that. he quit volleyball. it's not that he suddenly stopped liking volleyball. there were just other things he liked more. it also doesn't change the fact that he loved playing volleyball in high school.

but does quitting volleyball mean that it was "just a club" to him after all? that's hard to say. it does open up the question of what "just a club" even means, though. does that refer to an activity you do after school just to pass time? is it something you attend every day without it causing any sort of emotion in you, simply because you have nothing better to do?

exemplified in the arcs we have seen tsukishima and kenma go through, i think it's safe to say that none of the characters in haikyuu feel that way about volleyball. it seems almost impossible to be entirely indifferent towards the sport, to your team. volleyball is about forming connections at its core. you cannot join a team and leave it without at the very least having formed bonds with your teammates.

so, i don't think volleyball can ever be "just a club" in that sense to the characters in haikyuu. it's about making friends and having fun, about having fun with your friends. what you're going to do in the future doesn't really matter - whether you will continue to play volleyball for a professional team or a neighborhood association or maybe quit altogether - playing volleyball is about being in the moment, about making sure to connect with the ball and the next player on the court. those moments that make you realize volleyball is fun won't ever disappear, no matter what you decide to do in the future.

udai tenma is a character that shows us that it's okay for our passions to change. it's okay for something to be "just a phase," to be "just a hobby." it doesn't take away from the passion you once felt for it, or the joy it brought you.

its the way the tiny giant puts himself in the narrative and stays there, following hinata through his journey to nationals, being his hero and inspiration, the way he haunts the story entirely, some godlike figure in hinata’s memory—and then you meet him. and he’s just a guy. and he doesn’t even play volleyball anymore.

and this should be disappointing, this is a hero who has fallen off his pedestal, but. but it’s not. it’s not disappointing because hinata doesn’t need to chase this shadow anymore. he doesn’t need a memory to push him forward. he’s strong enough on his own. if he has to have a name, the strongest decoy is a good one.

i think akaashi deserves a spin-off about his misadventures in the manga department honestly

tenma gifts him a planner for his birthday and the first thing he does after opening it is mark all of tenma's deadlines. which he also has recorded in his phone calendar. AND he has them memorized. AND on sticky notes scattered throughout the office

tenma: you know i got you this planner so that you wouldn't have to put sticky notes everywhere, right? akaashi, sleep-deprived and running on five cups of coffee: time waits for no one, udai-san

the office has a special "akaashi keiji emergency rest kit" for when he falls asleep at his desk

it's got a blanket if it's cold, a pillow they tuck under his head, a bottle of water and snacks they leave next to him if he gets hungry/thirsty when he wakes up, and an eye mask that they put on him after they take off his glasses

idk i think the whole office really loves akaashi

and he really loves them back!!!! they're a team!!! they work together!!!! deadlines might be hell but at least it's a hell they're united in!!!

akaashi finding love and contentment and happiness in a place he initially wasn't sure about is everything to me okay

also i think he wingmans tenma and akiteru. i think it'd be very funny.

akaashi knows it's bad when he catches tenma drafting a whole new romance plot and he's like "udai-san. please. you have something due in five days you canNOT be doing this right now"

honestly akaashi just wants them to get together so that tenma will stop being dreamy and distracted and ACTUALLY focus on getting his manuscript done on time

and then they DO get together and akaashi is subjected to even more dreamy sighs and staring off into the distance and whatnot

tenma is such a disaster you guys i love him

god everything about it makes me want to cry actually. tenma who is still chasing after his dreams. and akaashi right there, learning how to be better. learning how to be passionate. learning how to give tenma his all. because he's TENMA'S editor and he'll be damned if he doesn't do it well.
