#UFO Robot Goldrake

Il 4 aprile 1978 alle 17:15, più o meno, andava in onda il primo episodio di quel cartone animato che avremmo chiamato Atlas Ufo Robot e che invece avrebbe dovuto chiamarsi Ufo Robot Grendizer (o Ufo Robot Grendaiza, nella pronuncia alla giapponese), invece per noi italiani divenne Goldrake.

Già dalla sigla lo stile dell'animazione era molto diverso da quelli di Supergulp, il contenitore di programmi per ragazzi ideato dalla Rai in onda fino al giorno prima. Anche i personaggi apparivano meno caricaturati, più verosimili, in un certo senso.

Il robot protagonista era il mezzo con cui un principe di un pianeta lontano era scappato dal proprio pianeta, Fleed, invaso dall'esercito di un pianeta vicino, per trovare rifugio sulla Terra dove un astronomo lo aveva fatto passare per suo figlio.

Purtroppo le truppe di Vega, gli invasori del pianeta Fleed, ben presto spostano le loro mire espansionistiche sulla Terra e il principe di Fleed dovrà salire nuovamente sul robot Goldrake per combattere in difesa della sua nuova patria.

Goldrake mi è sempre piaciuto per l'idea del robot che viene inglobato in questo disco volante grazie al quale può volare nello spazio, una soluzione ingegneristica che mi affascina ancor oggi.

Ne sarebbero arrivati molti altri di robot, inclusi i due Mazinga che erano in realtà precedenti a Goldrake nella timeline, ma non lo sapevamo all'epoca: Goldrake era il primo per noi e lo è tutt'ora.

Non lo sapevamo ancora ma quel 4 aprile assistemmo al primo giorno dell'invasione nipponica nei canali televisivi italiani.

Nulla sarebbe stato mai più come prima.

Il disegno in alto è il mio personalissimo omaggio a Goldrake.

Dopo Cutie Honey, Devilman, Mazinga e Getter Robo, prosegue il grande revival delle opere firmate dal maestro Go Nagai. 

Quello in cantiere presso lo studio GAINA (Il Piano nella Foresta), dietro alla supervisione di Mitsuo Fukuda (Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, L'Invincibile Dendoh), è un reboot della storica serie tv anni ‘70. Il titolo ufficiale è GRENDIZER U (n.d.r. In originale Goldrake si chiama Grendizer, quindi la potremmo chiamare GOLDRAKE U).

Da che è arrivata la notizia è stato da subito un putiferio.

Faccio una premessa, per me l'originale resta e resterà comunque imbattibile. Una cosa perfetta non può essere migliorata.

Ma può essere rielaborata, reinterpretata rivista sotto un altra chiave.

E comunque prima di giudicare la nuova serie Grendizer-U va vista e capita.

Perciò mi riservo pensieri e commenti una volta che l'avrò compresa.

Intanto vi lascio con l'originale che come ripeto è il meglio

One of my old obsessions is coming back violently and I have to rant about it...

I'm pretty sure that in my country they butchered it with the adaptation but I don't care. I love it so much it hurts!!! (Like They mistook mothers for sisters, etc)

Does someone remember Goldrake or Grendizer? idk- however, it was called in your country, please!?!?!!? It was one of the first cartoons(yeah anime but I didn't wven know what those were when I was 4) my parents showed me from their childhood paired with Kyashan and Candy (however they're called in other countries)

Can we talk about the fucking villain character designs????? Like- hello???? CAN WE BRING THINGS LIKE THESE BACK????

There was a dude with a computer in his eye with no pants, a giant t-shirt worn as a dress, long boots and slutty waist

A dude with HIS WIFE (small redhead screaming lady) coming out of his face???? Like breaking it in half, screeching and then going back inside???

A dude with the head of a bird on his shoulder

And I can go on!!!!

You don't understand. I was so obsessed with this series that a friend of my mother gifted me the entire series in DVD with the censored episodes still in Japanese with terrible subtitles, and I ATE THOSE EPISODES. (The dvds were NOT official)

I remembered hearing a long time ago that UFO Robo Grendizer (Goldrake 🇮🇹/ Goldorak🇫🇷) was supposedly getting rebooted and holy cow! That's true!

Grendizer already had a manga reboot a few years ago, but Grendizer Giga looks trashy to me. While I haven't read it, the reviews aren't favourable.

So here's what I hope, or, more precisely, what my ideal Grendizer remake would be like:

Keep the story, characters, and setting the same. They work! Buuuut...

Make a 26 episode series. That's likely, as it's both a common anime length and would trim lots of the filler. The original anime, just like so many other productions at the time, is a lengthy monster-of-the-week series that gets old pretty quickly - unless you are a kid from the 70's-80's

Take 👏 better 👏 care 👏 of 👏 the 👏 side 👏 characters: even emotionally relevant characters often last a single episode. Less episodes and more focus on the story would make a hell of a difference 😔👌

Keep a similar color direction please!! The original anime has, in its most taken care of drawings, color schemes that kick major ass

Isn't that glorious? I should search for some shots of the enemy base, I remember there are some super vibrant orange hues there

In conclusion, they just need to take the best of what's already there!

But Go and colleagues could also just go for a different direction and hopefully surprise us all. After all, remakes that dare being different from the original stick in memory - but you have to know how make them. Grendizer is an incredibly beloved franchise around the world, and nothing would be better than just doing something good.
