GILLIAN ALEXANDER
Designer at Critical Mass
Sheridan Web Design Alumna from 2016-2017
http://gillianalexander.ca
https://www.linkedin.com/in/gillian-alexander/
Last week, our class had 2 guests who came and had an interesting presentation about their work and their experiences in web design jobs. They are Dylan Bobier and Gillian Alexander. They studied the same course with Amy and Anya – our previous guests, and graduated from Sheridan's web design program a year ago. Interestingly, their backgrounds are quite similar to mine - fashion design. Dylan has a bachelor degree in theater production and costume design from the University of Toronto. He designed the costumes for various theater programs. After deciding to study and graduating in web design at Sheridan, he joined Critical Mass as an intern and then he became an official designer here. He has been working for CM for nearly 2 years.  Through his online portfolio, he represents himself as a talented designer with aesthetically pleasing ability and creativity. Besides, the websites he designs also show a very effective interaction with the users, which is also what I need to learn. Gillian graduated from visual merchandising art, Sheridan in 2016 and continued her studies in web design. She has many years of experience working in the fashion field. After graduating from web design program, she worked at NIIT as a UX / UI designer and later joined Critical Mass.
In the talk, Dylan and Gillian talked about the company they were working on - Critical Mass, and the projects they had done. At the same time, they also share with me a lot of useful work experience in web design.  First, they introduced Critical Mass, a full-service digital experience design. This is a large company with more than 950 employees working in 11 countries around the world. They have provided many brand solutions to many big and famous customers such as Infinity, Mercedes Benz, Rolex, Gucci, etc. for many years. Dylan has shown us the criteria of Critical Mass through which I can learn how to work as a professional design company:
Rising tides lift all ships: When you work with a team with many different areas, you can help each other and learn from each other. This helps the job to be completed effectively and also a good opportunity for you to develop yourself.
Own your mistakes, learn from them and don’t make them again: Making a mistake is not necessarily bad. It is your chance to gain experience and opportunity to learn to do better and not make the same mistake again.
Never stop ideating: That's the way you can create new things to impress your customers and get them to choose your designs.
** One important thing that he reminded is consumers are really concerned in how your design influences their brand.  Your design does not satisfy your taste but must reflect the image of the customer.
Dylan also outlined Critical Mass's mission is to improve the lives of their users in a meaningful way. It is also an important mission of a designer because if we do not focus on our customer’s needs, our work is no longer meaningful.
During the rest of the talk, Dylan presented us with some of the projects he did with his group at Critical Mass. The most recent project he has made is the 2019 INFINITI QX50 with the main purpose of approaching this new car product to the Canadian market through digital.  His work on this project includes UX & UI design, ideation, animation, Facebook AR. These works require a lot of skills accumulated during his working and learning. The Canadian 150 project, which Bobier participated in as UI design, Illustration and Social, was very impressive. This is a highly interactive website with great colors and impressive content. I enjoyed the idea of this site. It presents the necessary information, showing the sophistication and intelligence of the designer.
A very good experience that I learned from Bobier was never said "no". If you do not know to do something during the work, always say "yes" and try to find out later. It is a great opportunity for you to learn new things and you may have more chances to get the promotion in your career.
I learned a lot from Bobier’s work experience as well as design ideas, especially about UI design. I hope that after graduation, I will be equipped with the knowledge to be able to enter a professional working environment and have the opportunity to learn more things.

Anya’s Agency advice
Definition of Agency
: a business or organization established to provide a particular service, typically one that involves organizing transactions between two other parties.
an advertising agency
This weeks guest speaker, Anya Hamman is also a recent graduate of the Sheridan Web Design Program. She graduated in the spring of 2017. Anya says when she studied at Sheridan, people came from many different backgrounds and creative disciplines. Her creative background is in art history, which she did for approximately 8 years. She had taught herself some graphic design skills while freelancing, which lead her to the Sheridan program. She believed this was the best way to enter the industry, without studying in a 4 year program.
Tumblr media
School Work:
Anya presented us her Sheridan portfolio, which was created during the program. She also reflected on her time at Sheridan and left us with some helpful advice.
showcase the work you’re extremely proud of, be picky about your portfolio work
pride of ownership translates well in an interview
your school work will touch on all aspects of knowledge you’ve gained in the program, so show the complete body of work
when designing your sites, focus on a subject matter you’re passionate about, it could be a fictitious business, actual business or service
make all your designs responsive
design mainly for mobile and desktop
Professional Work:
Anya is currently an Art Director at Publicis-Hawkeye working with some high profile brands.
Publicis - Hawkeye specializes in:
CRM
Direct & Digital Marketing
Loyalty Marketing
Customer & Data Intelligence
Customer & Data Analytics
Print & Digital Production
Database Management
Marketing Automation
She began working at Publicis as a freelance junior Art Director for the first 3 months. She worked on the Red Lobster account doing lots emails, and banner ads. She is now Art Director and works on Red Team One, which consists of Anya and a writer. They are mainly responsible for all Red Lobster digital and print campaigns.
Tumblr media
She has also done email work with Citibank Canada. She says they’re doing some interesting work with Movable Ink which lets email marketers deliver jaw-dropping customer experiences. Their cloud-based software activates any data to generate intelligent content at the moment of open. Really cool stuff!
Some other clients include Walmart, Dairy Queen and Canada Post where Anya works on DM’s, emails, magazines, brochures and newsletters.
Tumblr media
Industry standards:
Anya believes there are some industry standards we should all be aware of before we venture out into the workforce. Many of these will be learned on the job, but it doesn’t hurt to be ahead of the curve.
be proficient in Adobe CS (Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, etc.)
know how to read/follow a creative brief
be ready to search for stock images
you will be working on many pitches
jobs turn-around quickly, 1-3 days, so be ready for long nights, don’t worry, you’re not alone - many agencies work long hours
lieu time is usually offered for overtime put in
Agencies usually take a play hard, work hard mentality
use resources to help you learn like Lynda.com
expect a salary range of $40K - $60K based on previous experience
Public Speaking:
Presenting your work and public speaking are very important to your success in this industry. You will be presenting your work to your peers, colleagues and clients, often. Presentations are in person or over the phone. When presenting creative, think of all the decisions you’ve made about the work. Dig into the details and have reasons for everything you’ve created.
Feedback and Criticism:
Being able to accept positive or negative criticism is paramount in this industry. Your work will be judged by your superiors, account team members and especially the clients. Be cool! Stay calm! Take the feedback and learn from it. Ask questions and get clarity on what to focus on with the feedback. Sometimes you will be surprised at the outcomes.
Career Direction:
When you graduate from this program, you should have a clear understanding of the path you want to take in your career. Do you want to be a web designer, UX/UI designer, print designer, etc? Sell yourself through your life and work experiences. Research the companies you wish to work for before applying for the position. There are many outlets for finding work. You can search talent agencies like Creative Niche, Creative Circle or job sites like Glassdoor, Indeed and network sites like LinkedIn as well.
Personal reflection:
Anya’s experience working in an agency is quite accurate. It’s a fast paced environment which is not for the faint of heart. You must be sure working at an agency is right for you as opposed to Amy Aschaber’s in-house gig. I’ve had the luxury of experiencing both of these careers which are quite unique and rewarding in their own way. As Anya mentioned, working in an agency you will learn things much quicker than in-house. You have many creative individuals in the office to collaborate with and get feedback from.
I’ve had many all-nighters, working on pitches and campaigns for that 9am meeting with the clients. You and your teams will work late nights and weekends, but the benefits and rewards will come. The play hard, word hard philosophy is true of the agency experience. They really know how to let loose. You will attend events with your colleagues and celebrate your successes together at awards ceremonies, conferences or just out for a beer.
My experience with print is extensive, but web design was an area I didn’t fully grasp. As Anya has done, I want to use my previous experience, through this program to be a more marketable Art Director. I look forward to building my web portfolio and showcasing my talents in the web space.
Public speaking is an area, I get nervous about. I know that this is the most important aspect of being an effective Art Director. I am considering joining Toastmasters which empowers individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders. There is a Toastmasters club meeting every Tuesday night at 7:00 pm in Thornhill. I think this would be great therapy to overcome the fear of public speaking.
In closing, I want to thank Anya for taking time from her work day to speak with us regarding her agency experience. It was well received and appreciated.
