What could've been--the untold odyssey of the Megaroad-01 across the great milky way!
Ever since the original broadcast of Super Dimension Fortress Macross and the release of the music video Flashback 2012, many fans have always wondered what happened to the original cast before the.....how should I put it....."arbitrary narrative decision" [and their rather "questionable" participation via the last piece of Macross Delta content] and since I got on a rather Protocultural mood I decided to make this little Fanart! a mock-up comic cover inspired by The Comico Comic Company's adaptation of Macross through it's Robotech counterpart [specifically: issue 35 ].
[Sidenote: to be honest--its one of the few covers I liked from their work] Basically what I did was: setting it up in the Macross universe and stripping away it's Robotech robes, changing the context of the original [and to quote one of my friends, make it less "Instinctively patriotic" feeling in comparison to the Comico ver.] with "the Eve of the Space Emigration Initiative" as the background/new context.
To be frank with you fellas: Originally I was going to just leave the drawing alone like that--but the idea of making a "mock-up comic cover variant" won me over and honestly it makes me want to practice my skills on creating cover art not just for Macross related content [or any franchise really] but also for my original projects in the near future as well.
Before I end the post with the variants of this Fanart I have some special mentions/credit to give:
Mechaban
I recommend y'all give him a watch or check out his work, as he not only does Macross but also work based on Mospeada and Southern Cross [especially in their Robotech counterparts + the Robotech EU among other cool stuff], and he's the same cool dude who provided us Protoculture Fans a mock-up of what Hikaru's dress uniform might look like which I used for this Fanart.

SDF Macross
超時空要塞マクロス
(Anime)
Mecha romance musical by Shoji Kawamori
Era: Early 80s
Rating: S
Plot: In the late 90s, a giant spacecraft of unknown origin falls on an island, leading to the creation of the UN Spacy, to both protect earth from a possible alien invasion and to rebuild the spacecraft. 10 years after, the SDF-1 Macross is ready to be launched, and in attendance are Hikaru Ichijyo, a young stunt pilot at the invitation of friend Roy Focker, Lynn Minmay, a waitress in a Chinese restaurant in the city that grew around the Macross during the rebuild process and Misa Hayase, a first lieutenant working on the bridge of the Macross. However, during launch the solar system is invaded by the Zentradi, who identify the Macross as a ship of their former enemies.
Length: 36 episodes + 1 film + 1 OVA
Thoughts: And here's one of the big ones. Hard what may have come to the heads of two Gundam fans to think "what this needs is jet fighters with legs and singing", but I'm guessing saying "we can sell a lot of toys and soundtracks" at a meeting was probably it. How they *convinced* them it could work is another issue, but oh boy, does it work. It pretty much defined what the series would be known for in the following iterations - the variable fighters, an aspiring music star with a connection to protoculture (after all, what is music but an universal language) involved in a love triangle and the tensions between the civilian side of the Macross and it's military leadership in what's often terrifying life-or-death situations.
The weakest point of the story is probably the love triangle itself, making it where all vertices are very wishy washy about their feelings is just messy. Extending the story to the aftermath of the conflict also didn't seem such a good bet for this show (would payoff in terms of exploring the role of the Zentradi in the post-war) and probably would be better served focusing on different characters. Animation varies a lot (unsurprising for a show that may have had more than a handful of studios involved in, including very young Gainax), but the action scenes are pretty thrilling and you can still feel the impact they had on the medium as an whole, if only for the "this machine transforms into another machine" thing. Wonder if that picked up.
Might do a DYRL post separately, but in brief it's a condensed version of the story with some changes (Hikaru is already a rookie pilot and Minmay a up and coming star) and outstanding production values and maybe *the* defining song of the franchise that gives the movie it's title. Flashback 2012, which serves as the epilogue to the story, is a video album featuring Minmei's songs over footage from both series and movie and new sequences planned but not directed showing her final gig at earth, as she boards the Megaroad (captained by Misa), humanity's first colony spaceship. I don't think it replaces the series (for instance, it compresses the Jenius - Fallyna relationship to a bare minimum, and their kids appear all over the place over the rest of the franchise) but it allows you to get to the basics of the story.
Recommended to: fans of big robots and idols
Plus:
The variable fighter design by Mikimoto is one of those for the ages.
While animation can be a bit spotty, combat is generally on point. Ah ah missiles go brrrrrrrrr
Asking the important question, can singing save the world, which feels very 80s
Unsurprisingly, the music. Iijima is great as Minmei and this role as a virtual idol launched her career and is what best remembered from the show, but Kentaro Haneda's work on incidental music is incredible as well.
Inconsistencies between the TV series and DYRL being attributed in-universe on it being a war film? That works.
Minus:
Other than the infamous baby tossing scene, the added 9 episodes feel like a complete afterthought and feel the only reason to reignite a love triangle is to change it's shape.
Said triangle narratively is a complete mess.
Some bits of animation were very, VERY rushed.

Weekly Anime Comics: Macross - page 10
Seriously, it's funny to me every single time.  A little piece of the world was lost when Google Translate became available.
Also, just an aside: the UN Spacy officer uniform, when presented just in line art form, actually looks a lot more like the classic Klingon uniform than I expected.  Those shoulder things and the belt are is JUST the right spots to distract me.

YES! My very first fanfic (handwritten 40 years ago) was Robotech! The VF1-J Valkyrie is my favourite fighter (it featured in gyrfalcon mode in my fic). I Mary-Sued myself into a squadron with Rick, Max, and Miriya (look, I was 12, gimme a break). Robotech was the first box set hubs and I exchanged, we played the battle theme as our walk out for our wedding, and his wedding ring is based on the UN Spacy.
All that to say, yes, Robotech fans exist on the hellsite!
Have a Max vs Miriya dogfight just for funsies!

Illo-9 Shapes
Topics of Interest
Scan Lines. Disrupting, spacy, tech
Rays. glorifying, radial, religious/political
Triangulation. Block-like, formulaic engaging
Final Selection, Scanlines
Because I’m interested in the digital implications scanlines carry. Even if they're not disrupting something tech-like they make me think artificial.
Scanlines
A graphic technique that consists of intersecting something with thick, usually uniform, horizontal lines. This can give whatever the scan lines are overlaid on, an airy un-solid, or techy feel.
Keywords
Obscured
Digital
Cinematic
Implied
Interrupted
Creative Concept
I'm interested in taking the Idea of scan lines and applying them with a tongue-in-cheek twist. What if I implied scanlines on a photo-realistic object by removing all the content the scan lines touched? Or had the scan lines be a window into a different scene entirely? The idea of a candle missing most of its stick in segments could be a powerful and interesting image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design Decisions
I went on a couple of detours with this one but eventually rained it back into the original concept. I drew up my roughs and then started searching for stock images. Ran into body candles and thought the notion of a person-shaped candle with segments missing was an excellent idea. Maybe if we had more time but I felt like my message got lost pretty fast with all those factors. But that’s how this happened.
Tumblr media
With my final, and much simpler concept I was able to spend time making the segmented candle look more believable. After creating it, the image invoked a feeling of scarcity and grit, so I leaned into that direction with the caption.
I'm not going to deny it, this Illo was a pretty disorganized scattered project. I could have benefited from a stronger starting concept.

Artificial Intelligence in Action: Hands-On Project Ideas for Final Year Students
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field that has become an integral part of our daily lives. From virtual personal assistants like Siri and Alexa to self-driving cars, AI is revolutionizing the way we interact with technology. As a result, there is a growing demand for professionals with expertise in AI, making it an attractive field for final year students to explore.
While theoretical knowledge is essential, hands-on experience is crucial for students to truly understand and excel in the field of AI. Here are some project ideas that final year students can undertake to gain practical experience and showcase their skills in AI.
1. Develop a Chatbot Chatbots are computer programs that use AI to simulate conversation with humans. They are widely used in customer service, education, and various other industries. As a final year student, you can develop a chatbot that can handle basic customer inquiries, provide information on a specific topic, or even assist in online shopping. You can use popular AI tools and platforms like Dialogflow, IBM Watson, or Microsoft Azure to build your chatbot. This project will not only help you understand the fundamentals of AI but also improve your programming skills.
2. Build a Recommendation System Recommendation systems are widely used in e-commerce, entertainment, and social media platforms to suggest products, movies, or posts based on a user's preferences. As a final year student, you can develop a recommendation system that uses machine learning algorithms to analyze a user's past behavior and make personalized recommendations. You can start by building a simple movie recommendation system using collaborative filtering techniques, and then expand it to include more complex algorithms like content-based filtering and hybrid filtering.
3. Create a Virtual Assistant Virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant have become an integral part of our lives. As a final year student, you can create your own virtual assistant that can perform tasks like setting reminders, answering questions, and controlling smart devices. You can use open-source AI libraries like TensorFlow or PyTorch to train your virtual assistant and natural language processing (NLP) tools like NLTK or spaCy to understand and respond to user commands. This project will allow you to explore different AI techniques, such as speech recognition, NLP, and machine learning.
4. Design an Image Recognition System Image recognition is a subset of AI that enables machines to identify and classify objects in images or videos. As a final year student, you can develop an image recognition system that can identify and classify objects from a set of images. You can use deep learning techniques and popular frameworks like TensorFlow or Keras to train your model. This project will not only enhance your coding skills but also give you an understanding of image processing and computer vision.
5. Implement a Predictive Analytics System Predictive analytics uses statistical algorithms and machine learning techniques to analyze historical data and make predictions about future events. As a final year student, you can develop a predictive analytics system that can forecast future trends, identify potential risks, or make recommendations based on past data. You can use programming languages like R or Python and data analytics tools like Tableau or Power BI to build your system. This project will give you hands-on experience with data analysis, machine learning, and data visualization.
In conclusion, these are just a few project AI ideas that final-year students can undertake to gain practical experience in artificial intelligence. As the field of AI continues to evolve, there are endless possibilities for students to explore and develop innovative solutions. By working on these hands-on projects, students can not only enhance their skills and understanding of AI but also demonstrate their potential to potential employers in the future.

Macross Plus
マコロスプラス
(OVA)
Mecha romance by Shoji Kawamori
Era: 1990s
Rating: A
Plot: 30 years after the events of SDF Macross, the UN Spacy is deciding on the next generation of variable fighters. After disobeying orders far too many times, flying ace Isamu Dawson is sent to the testing facility in the colony planet of Eden to become a test pilot. On arrival, he meets childhood friend, the half-Zentradi pilot Guld Goa Bowman, but their old grudges quickly endanger the selection process. Things don't get better once another old friend arrives on Eden, Myung Fang Lone, now the producer for Sharon Apple, an AI singer that became the most popular in the galaxy.
Length: 4 episodes (~40 minutes)
Thoughts: After the disappointment in Macross II, Studio Nue and Shoji Kawamori returned to make a true follow-up to the original series and the results are... Good, I guess? Biggest problem I have with it is that it feels more of a techno-thriller about skunkworks programs and AI gone wrong than the follow-up of the show with the idol singing in a battlefield. Music takes a more of a secondary role here (although coming big with the human factor in the finale), and there also isn't a love triangle as much as a particularly messy unresolved one that for the sake of one of the parts was left with a ton of unresolved baggage in the past. However, what it lacks on the soap opera musical department, it makes up on the main story, and if rampant AI is a staple of sci-fi, it did got things right, like the AI that is just a mechanical turk with someone pulling the strings, the attempt to replace human talent with a machine, and also how "civilian" and "military" research aren't usually very far apart. That sort of scheming is, plot wise, the most Macross thing in Plus.
Technically speaking, it looks incredible, far better than Macross II (released only three years before), it uses some of the pioneering 3D effects over traditional cel shading we'd see throughout the rest of the decade and until digital animation became the norm, and the flying scenes look fantastic, that kid Shinchiro Watanabe is going places. The music of Sharon Apple in itself is... well, extremely mid 90s jazzy/electronic downtempo pop. It's fairly decent but the song that really sticks is Voices, sung by Akino Arai and composed by Yokko Kano, who also did the score. So, where does it leave us? It's a bit hard to judge, as an anime by itself it is quintessential mid 90s sci-fi viewing, but as a Macross title, it feels more like a new Super Dimension title in the darker and edgier 90s OVA market. I think the rating I ended up settling in is a reflection of that.
Recommended to: fans of 90s animation, aerial fights and "fans" of LLMs.
Plus:
Yes, it is.
Maybe the best Macross ever looked, particularly the flight action scenes
AI gone rogue isn't particularly fresh, but it did get a lot of stuff right, somehow.
Minus:
All in all, the story feels a wrong match for Macross

Recalling I had this entire aside in mind for my macross/mech OC Jenny Brink where due to the UN Navy/Airforce and nascent UN Spacy using an overtechnology-enhanced F-14D+ Tomcat variant as their fighter of choice, Jen's flight training included a brief period of practicing ways to recover from sudden jet engine compressor stalls, an issue that notoriously afflicted the original engines of the initial F-14A variant, even though this issue wouldn't have been present on any of the F-14s she herself flew.
(worth noting: Kara Hultgreen, the first US military pilot to die in a crash, did so due to her F-14A suffering a compressor stall during final approach)
also while I never quite decided where exactly Jen is from outside of "somewhere in europe", I do like the idea of her initial pilot training before being put in an F-14 might have been in either a Saab 39 Gripen/Griffin or a Eurofighter Typhoon - both being about the same size as the VF-1A Valkyrie she'd eventually fly on board the SDF-1 Macross, and thus significantly smaller than the comparably sizeable F-14
