Back to School Season Doesn’t Mean the End to Family Travel
Tumblr media
It’s back to school season and I hope that like us, you’ve had a wonderful summer break enjoying amazing memories with your family. Back to school time doesn’t have to mean the end of travel and adventure. Weekend getaways, day trips and visits to family are one of a kind opportunities to continue using adventure to learn while maintaining a “regular” school schedule.
Local travel is still travel. I challenge you to take your kids on adventures, by exploring your own state, region or country. Technology also offers us unique opportunities to take our children on educational “trips” around the world.
Throughout the academic year, I’ll continue to share our adventures and also resources that will help you keep your child(ren)’s minds on a constant adventure.
These are some of the resources that I’ll be using with my kids this week in order to take trips as we attempt a soft start to our homeschool, school and extracurricular year. What are some of your favorite family travel, geography, culture and history resources that inspire wanderlust?
What were some of your favorite family travel moments from this past summer?
This is what we were up to:
- California road trip. We started our adventures with a direct flight from Boston to LA. We drove from LA to Sequoia National Park. One day at Yosemite National Park. 2 nights in San Francisco, followed by a 1 night drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. 1 night in Anaheim and one full day at Disneyland. 2 nights in San Diego and flew back out of LA. Yes, we did that all in one week and had an amazing time.
- Day trip to Block Island, RI
- A long weekend at Shenandoah National Park
- Day trip to Boston
- Trip to Hershey Park and Lancaster, PA
- Week long trip to the Greater Albany area
- 4 nights on Martha’s Vineyard
- 4 nights at Smuggler’s Notch in Vermont

Easily Confused Words: Atchafalaya vs. Appalachia
Easily Confused Words: Atchafalaya vs. Appalachia
Atchafalaya and Appalachia are easily confused words. Both relate to topography of the contiguous United States.
The spell-check application of most word processing software programs would not catch a slip-up of these two words. Spell-check is looking for words that aren’t in its dictionary, and words that resemble words in its dictionary, but are possibly spelled wrong. Spell-check isn’t…

The spell-check application of most word processing software programs would not catch a slip-up of these two words. Spell-check is looking for words that aren’t in its dictionary, and words that resemble words in its dictionary, but are possibly spelled wrong. Spell-check isn’t perfect. The Top 3 Most Populous States in the U.S.
Photo: Miami
The top three most populous states in the U.S. are California, Texas, and Florida. Previously New York held the third spot, however the Census Bureau reported at the end of 2014 that Florida had officially surpassed the Empire State in its number of residents, coming in at nearly 20 million (NY 19.7 million.) California has 38.8 million residents, Texas 27 million. Seems the USA Today is right- all those snowbirds are starting to stay.
*Snowbirds are what we call northerners who head south to warmer places during the winter months. So many New Yorkers now retire to Miami-Dade County, it's become known as the sixth borough.
