JMJ: Frankenstein; or, the Modem Prometheus

Originally this was going to be titled "So Your Favourite Couple is Dead." but that would probably be a better outcome.

Spoilers for The Magnus Protocol episode 1, and all of The Magnus Archives by implication, below the cut.

This is going to be building on a couple of ideas I've seen throw around. Too often to cite any particular source, unfortunately, but I've not seen this conclusion reached and I think it might have more backing to it. Additionally, it's built upon the assumption that because "Chester" and "Norris" share VA's with Jon and Martin that they are Jon and Martin. Which naturally leaves that other J for "Augustus" being Jonah.

A very common thread in the conversations around episode 1's incident reports is that they're foreshadowing the major themes/beats of the show. The second one is obvious enough; don't got to the Magnus Institute. A sentiment we can all get behind. The other, a story of partial reanimation, has been taken to be a warning that the people you love don't always come back the same. I think that's likely the implication but a potential clue hasn't seen any attention AFAIK.

Before we get there though I need to briefly explain the history of JMJ. If you were a part of the ARG you'll know all about Colin's Code Collection. For those who don't know out favourite OIAR code monkey kept a selection of projects on the OIAR servers and through some covert means we gained access to this. Lots of it was normal stuff like Colin thinking he could improve Linux. However there were several encoded strings left by _6A1F7106A_$. These strings contained a few things but of importance for us is a few code blocks encoded in a monoalphabetic substitution cipher where the ciphertext was alchemic symbols. 6A1F7106A itself is an encoded string but unlike the rest of the ARG it was encoded in three layers. 6A is hexadecimal for "J", while 1F710 is Unicode for "🜐", and 🜐 was "M" in the aforementioned alchemic cipher. JMJ.

Now back to that incident. Coming back wrong was the entire premise of why that incident was scary. JMJ have come back too., and as that incident was about partial reanimation everyone ran with that idea mapping onto JMJ. But "Reanimation (Partial)" wasn't the only option for it as it could have bee "Reanimation (Amalgamative)".

This whole time they've been saying JMJ. It's not ever just been J, or M. Even before we knew it was JMJ it was 6A1F7106A. Always one string; like one name. We've been talking about how shunting the Fears through the portal could've mixed them together but they're not the only ones that could've happened to. So what if it's not about JMJ coming back wrong, but coming back pieced together into a new whole?

It's not just the naming either but how they act. An amalgamation of Jon, Martin, and Jonah vying for control. Jonah, again presuming Augustus is Jonah, is the rarest of the three because it's 2-on-1. Jon and Martin can try to suppress him. Additionally, the .jmj error also makes more sense if you treat them as a single entity rather than three entirely separate ones. The trailer initialises them all as separate things but any effects of them we see is a single name and given all the above they don't seem to be able to act independently. The reason the trailer mentions errors and undefined drives for the master–slave drives would then be because there is no singular consciousness in control of the whole. There is a lack of authority, no truly dominant aspect to them, no hierarchy. So they're vying for control and causing those errors. The .jmj error, the encrypted text when plaintext would have been more useful, Fr3-d1 breaking down, the fact they seemingly can only manifest single personalities at once, Jonah's rare appearances. There is an obvious conflict at play here.

The opening to this wasn't a joke either. I was planning on writing about how they're likely dead for real. We've known Elias' VA wasn't coming back for a long long time so if it's Jonah in there it's OG Jonah. OG Jonah who doesn't have a body, which means more than likely whatever has trapped them hasn't stored their bodies. They're in there forever. No getting out. No returning to life at all. Just a cyberspace hell.

But at least they've got some close company.

Dashboard Stuff: Palettes for Tumblr

Download and install from this page (scroll down to Installation). This small plugin got a brief mention here but I think it's so good that it deserves its own post. It's from the same creator who made the XKit-Rewritten plugin which is widely popular within the Tumblr rpc.

As you might know by now, I'm a total customization freak and always looking for ways to improve my dashboard experience here and there. Those modifications are rather small but can have a huge impact in terms of usability and overall enjoyment of being here. The usual disclaimer: I'm on desktop 90% of the time. My Screen is 1920x1080p ; 17,3" standard notebook. The results may differ depending on your setup. Make tweaks to your own preference.

Access the settings from the Extension Manager Menu of your browser. Create your own dashboard colors by clicking on Manage… and starting from a default palette.

Click on New.. and start from True Blue for a light palette and from Dark Mode for a dark palette. If you are using Firefox, having a Hex to RGB converter on hand is recommended. In Chrome you can type in a Hex Code directly. Name your palette and save it when you're done. You can also import/export palettes to have a backup at hand anytime and switch palettes easily. Return to the dashboard and apply the palette from the drop down menu. It should appear at the very bottom of the list.

Making custom colors is great enough but you can also change the font-family and font-size. This is what makes this plugin really worth using. Do you hate Tumblr's default font which looks like ass as much as I do? I would recommend Helvetica Neue for best readability. It also fixes a lot of unicode, making most tags using symbols look better. But there's a few options for serif fonts, too, if you are going with this certain type of aesthetic. The default font size is 16, I like to use 15 for a more compact look and use a 110% zoom setting for my browser to go along with it. (CTRL+/- to change the zoom level and CTRL0 for 100%) Both small font and normal font look really good with this setting, in my opinion.

I had a good week. I fixed several bugs, cleaned some jank unicode characters out of tags, improved quality of life, and added new tools to duplicates auto-resolution. The Linux test build last week went well, so that should be back too.

It's technically not a matter of the fonts, or only indirectly.

Those are different Unicode characters than the "standard" Latin characters (derived by way of ASCII). They are meant to have specific other meanings/uses. And either only specific odd fonts have those special characters, or the character is meant to have a specific look, and fonts keep to that.

for example "𝕚" is "Mathematical Double-Struck Small I" "𝔣" is "Mathematical Fraktur Small F" "𝒽" is "Mathematical Script Small H"

Which may be what some screen readers read... for example "hello" written with that last style would in some cases be read aloud not as "hello" but as:

"Mathematical Script Small H, Mathematical Script Small E, Mathematical Script Small L, Mathematical Script Small L, Mathematical Script Small O"

NVDA (and open source and free screen reader) on Windows 10 just skipped the fancy text entirely, as does Windows Narrator.

But! I note that I just used Read Aloud on my phone with Android 13 (fully updated), and it read the the whole of OP's post just fine. In the past I have experienced the reading out of each letter name though.

So at least some platforms the accessibility may be improving, but it isn't there yet, and we shouldn't rely on it. In any case, these special characters get used as a way "change fonts" on a platform that only allows plain text or just bold and italics. If a system supports rich text of the right kind, as in Word docs, PDF, HTML/CSS etc, you can use the correct "normal" Latin letters and still change fonts. Which is fine for screen readers, they know not to care about the font metadata like that.

For example, Tumblr doesn't let you use just any font, but it does allow some fancy fonts (at least from the app, web interface can only do a whole paragraph of Lucille font for some reason), and those use HTML/CSS, if you select those in the tumblr interface, they will be read correctly. (Which is why many "plain text IDs" on tumblr are pointless, I see people putting them on things where the font is just bigger or colored or a different font (but not different characters), but like... the screen readers are going to ignore the CSS font info anyway and just read it normally, and if people have visual difficulties that might make it hard to read, they can easily have personal CSS that overrides e.g. font color changes. And it is just a standard setting in FF that you can force it to use your fonts and ignore the websites fonts.)

AO3 lets you use workskins to style things with CSS, including being able to use different fonts. So you can use that to get fancy fonts without destroying screen reader accessibility. It's not as simple as it might be, but it isn't too bad, once you get it

Civilization VI: Gathering Storm Cheats

Enable Console

Start by head to the following file location:

C:Users[USER NAME]DocumentsMy GamesSid Meier’s Civilization VI

Now, make a backup of the AppOptions.txt file. Open that file and scroll down to the [Debug] section of the file. Look for a line containing the following text:

EnableDebugMenu 0

Change the 0 in that text so that it reads 1, and start playing the game like usual. Then press ~ (TILDE, THE KEY ABOVE TAB) to access the debug console.

Easy Deity Win (Exploit)

You can win the game on Deity difficulty and score some easy achievements by taking the following steps:

Choose your civilization.

Create a custom game with only “Score Victory” checked, and change the turn limit to 1.

Load the game and choose the Found City option.

End your turn as soon as the option becomes available.

You win the match, just like that, and you will unlock numerous achievements. This works on any difficulty setting.

Reveal the Entire Map

Use a text editor to edit the “Config.ini” file in your Steam Apps folder or the “DocumentsMy GamesSid Meier’s Civilization 6” directory.

Find the “DebugPanel = 0” line and change it to “DebugPanel = 1”

Save and close the “Config.ini” file.

While playing the game, press ~ to display the debug panel.

Select “Reveal All” to reveal the entire map.

There are also other debug options you can enable.

Now you can easily access Debug Console in Civilization VI in-game. In order to activate it you just need to PRESS TILDE “~”. It will open a Debug Window, from there select “Reveal All” option.

Trading Glitch

When trading with the AI, you can use two major glitchs:

1- Give any strategic or luxury resources and as much gold per turn as possible, then click the option whatwill you give me for this?, the AI will break and will offer insane amounts of goldand gold per turn just for the resource.

2- Ask for whatever you want from the AI (cities included) and start putting gold (not gold per turn, only normal gold) untilthey accept the deal, then reduce until you’re as close as possible to the required amount, Ex: 25890 Gold of 26000 required, and click on the option make this trade equitable, this will break the AI and will ask an amount of gold per turn proportional to how close you were to the real price. (I bought 5 cities for 3 gold per turn and a jeans in emperor difficulty). This glitch can also be used in multiplayer matches that include AI, but will surely get patched soon.

Early Domination

If you want to enjoy Civilization 6’s battle systems, it’ll be best to pick up the Aztecs, Scythia, or the Spartan Greece. Aztecs allow your own territories to have more tile improvements as their Eagle Warriors convert slain units into Builder units. Meanwhile, Scythia’s units have bonuses against targeting wounded enemy units. Lastly, the Spartan Greece units generate Culture per enemy unit killed. Waging war in the earlier eras yields fewer Warmonger penalties, so feel free tosiege other Civilizations or City States if you need something from them. If you manage to take every Capital or wipe out every leader in the match, your Civilization will attain the laborious and difficult Domination Victory.

Camera keys

With Civilization VI now out in the wild, one of the biggest gripes is the camera control not being mapped to WASD. The good news is that camera keys can be changedwith some simple file editing. Open the “WorldInput.lua” file in a text editor such as Notepad or Notepad++ Find the DefaultKeyDownHandler section Find the line if( uiKey Keys.VK_UP ) and then make the changes as follows if( uiKey Keys.VK_UP or uiKey Keys.W) if( uiKey Keys.VK_RIGHT or uiKey Keys.A) if( uiKey Keys.VK_DOWN or uiKey Keys.S) if( uiKey Keys.VK_LEFT or uiKey Keys.D)

Next you need to add the same entries above to the DefaultKeyUpHandler section. Note that you will also need to rebind the default Attack and Great Works default keys to something else so your new camera keys do not conflict.

Rename Cities

1) Go to the Civilization VI installation folder – C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonSid Meier’s Civilization VI.

2) Go to Base > Assets > Text > install language – ..SteamsteamappscommonSid Meier’s Civilization VIBaseAssetsTexten_US.

3) Then open the file named “CityNames_Text.xml” with any text editor, then search for the city/civilization that you want to rename. Change the name there and save. Once you are all done reload the game and you will find your city name changed.

Disable Unit Auto Cycle

Go to ..UsersDocumentsMy GamesSid Meier’s Civilization VI

Then open “UserOptions.txt”

After that go to “line 60” then change “AutoUnitCycle 1” to “AutoUnitCycle 0”

Save the file “UserOptions.txt”

Once you are all done then save (Ctrl + S)

If you are an engineer but didn't see the above yesterday, I strongly recommend it, the whole thing. We're clearly in the inflection point of this tech right now, and if you aren't experimenting with integrating some variant of it in some way into your work workflow, I think it is time. So autocomplete has a couple new things. First off, there's a new 'all files ever imported/deleted' entry under the file domain button. This searches everything your client has ever seen, runs super fast, and works with 'all known tags'. Also, when editing tags, I've tightened up the selection rules and reduced the sibling spam--now, you should get the 'ideal' of what you typed at the top, then what you actually typed (if that differs), and then normal results. Also, the various paste buttons tucked into edit autocompletes now only ever add items--if any of what you paste is already in the accompanying list, it won't be removed now.

And I changed the '(displays as xxx)' sibling indicator. It is now a simple unicode arrow, and because I wanted to play with gradients, I made it fade its colour from one namespace to another. If you don't like the text or the fade, you can change them under options->tag presentation.

There's a new Deviant Art downloader, thanks to a user's work, that pulls the 'original' quality from the 'download' button, which some creators turn on for logged-in users. There's also five new File URL URL Classes, which you can search with system:known url, that will categorise your existing DA downloads according to their quality. Enterprising advanced users might like to play around with this!
