Unlocking Success: How Brands Harness Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) technology integrates digital information with the physical environment, live and in real time.
In 2023, the number of potential mobile AR user devices is expected to reach 1.4 billion.
On a consumer level, the AR hardware market was valued at 2.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2023.
Augmented Reality (AR) has swiftly become a game-changer for brands looking to engage users in novel and interactive ways. Google’s ARCode Geospatial API is at the forefront of this revolution, enabling users to interact with virtual objects seamlessly within the real world through their mobile devices. These ARCodes are generated using a customized QR code format, containing information about the virtual object, such as its location, size, and shape. When users scan an ARCode with their mobile device, the code’s information is leveraged to overlay the virtual object onto the real world.
ARCodes can serve various purposes, including:
Displaying Additional Information: ARCodes can provide supplementary information about an object. For instance, an ARCode might reveal a plant’s name, a building’s history, or product usage instructions.
Offering Interactive Experiences: They can facilitate interactive experiences, allowing users to play games, watch videos, or learn about specific subjects.
Enabling Purchases: ARCodes can streamline purchases, enabling users to buy products or services with a simple scan.
Google’s ARCode is a relatively new technology but has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with our surroundings.
Current Applications of Google’s ARCode
Retail Sector: In retail, ARCode is being employed to provide additional product information, offer interactive experiences, and facilitate purchases. For instance, Walmart uses ARCode to enable users to visualize furniture in their homes before making a purchase. Here’s another example of how Augmented Reality (AR) is pushing the boundaries of creativity and engagement. In the heart of New York City’s iconic Times Square, a unique celebration unfolded with the Gap x Barbie clothing collection. Google, in collaboration with Adobe Aero and Unit9, orchestrated a virtual storefront, effectively transforming Times Square into a vibrant pink Pop-Up Store.
WELCOME TO GAP X BARBIE? We’re transforming our iconic Times Square store into an immersive Gap X Barbie AR experience where you can sneak peek the collab that’s dropping later this month. ??Experience powered by @Google Geospatial Creator in @Adobe Aero. // @Barbie pic.twitter.com/PCGDd8BvS0
— Gap (@Gap) May 11, 2023
Gaming Industry: Celebrating the 45th anniversary of the legendary “Space Invaders World Defense“, an extraordinary digitalization of New York City occurred. The city became overrun by invading spaceships, bringing the beloved game to life like never before. What’s even more impressive is that this immersive experience is accessible through Street View in over 100 countries.
Tourism Sector: In tourism, AR provides visitors with information about attractions and points of interest. London, for instance, utilizes AR to enable visitors to delve into the city’s history and culture.
Google’s ARCode is a rapidly growing technology with immense potential. As it continues to evolve, we can expect to see more ARCode applications integrated into our daily lives.
Brands that embrace Augmented Reality are not only enhancing user engagement but also creating immersive and memorable experiences for their audiences. AR is no longer science fiction; it’s the present and future of brand interaction.

Samsung: The Art of Innovation 2.0

The Galaxy S10 | S10 + is the most powerful and innovative phone on the market. Samsung wanted to showcase some of its impressive features in never-before-seen ways. The Art of Innovation 2.0 This was the second set of windows commissioned for KaDeWe. To do more than create innovative, eye-catching installations; we wanted to push the boundaries of what was possible within the windows and find new ways to let passersby interact with and affect what was inside. We looked at every window to translate the features of the phone so people understood how components like superior connectivity, enhanced intelligence and a powerful camera could improve their lives.

A challenging project from start to finish due to the short time frame, complexity and amount of work to be done all at once. A few windows used infrared sensors allowing people to engage with and trigger reactions inside of the windows themselves. Other highlights included fun interactive games, a multi-angle photo booth and a miniature infinity room. The project was led by Creative Director Kate Lynham. Yet I was asked to fill her shoes for some weeks, having to conceptualise some of the windows and lead the development throughout. ES DEVLIN / TED TALK
Es Devlin talks about the poetic aspect of design and her being a stage sculpture, but in fact she actually sculpts the experience for the audience. She’s always seeking to create the most articulate sculpture and “we're always seeking to create the most articulate sculpture, the most poetic instrument of communication to an audience. When I say poetic, I just mean language at its most condensed, like a song lyric, a poetic puzzle to be unlocked and unpacked.”
She said something that really resonated with me: that she is creating illusions, making things that are false but trying to make it look real. She asks herself if “can we communicate truth using things that are false?”

Killbear National Park!
I have many fond memories and continue to make them year by year in the surrounding areas. You see, Killbear park does not end at its boundaries, but the wildlife is protected in the boundaries. I enjoy interpreting nature because interpretation is management (459)! Surrounding cottages also work to protect any animals that might wander through their properties! Surrounding area is largely forested which allows for boundaries to be blurred for a more cohesive natural area! This is why I have become fond of the area!
youtube
Killbear National Park is somewhere close to my heart and is very close to my cottage on Rose Island as it's a 5-minute boat ride across! My family and I enjoy the surrounding nature on walks and swimming and cliff jumping which is a tradition for people to do when they visit the park! I am currently obsessed with the area for its beauty and for the protection of what I love! Seems to be the most untouched place by humans other than the campsites which are so well maintained! There is a tree on the peninsula of Killbear which happens to be the most photographed tree in Ontario which is a windswept pine often captured in front of the magnificent sunsets you will surely see if you visit!
Killbear Windswept Pine, the most photographed tree in Ontario (Friends of Killbear)... Looks Picturesque don't you think?!

My cousins and I cliff jumping at Killbear Peninsula!
Killbear Park contains wetlands which are created by surrounding beavers and provide habitat for other organisms and a self-sustaining ecosystem! I find it so special that the area is not only created because of the wildlife instead of humans, but also maintained by itself too with no help from mankind. Wetlands are vital pieces of an ecosystem as they harbor many species of birds, amphibians, and insects by providing nursery areas (Friends of Killbear).
Where did Killbear’s name come from?! Bears are very common in the park as well as at my cottage! My family and I often find our wild blueberries depleted and our neighbor loves sleeping in a hammock outside during the summer and has spotted a few over the years, thankfully dodging any danger. In the spring we often find footprints in the mud double the size of our hands, which is crazy to imagine. Killbear had a history of logging before becoming a national park and protected area. There are stories of a logger killing a bear or vice versa, but the timeline does not line up (Friends of Killbear). Across the lake behind my cottage on rose island is Perry Island which is attached to the mainland by bridge. On Parry Island is a First Nations reserve Anishinabek (Ojibway) called the park which comes to a point ‘Mukwa Nayoshing’ which translates to bear point. To this day bears still swim back and forth, often making a pit stop on Rose Island, and the name is thought to be a mistranslation from Bear Point in Ojibway to Killbear Point in English!
Bear sighting at Killbear National Park (Friends of Killbear)
Killbear National Park is an incredible natural place that has many functions which allow it to sustain wildlife and...what is most important to most humans; to be profitable and provide ecosystem functions to us! I find the space incredibly peaceful, especially around the water which I am often most comfortable around!

The process of FMP: initial idea and concept 2

I looked back at dumpling culture after the first week and find out that basically square and circle shape is being an important role in Chinese Culture.
Description:
In western country, the word circle derives from the Greek, it is a metathesis of the Homeric Greek. It means "hoop" or "ring". The origins of the words circus and circuit are closely related. In the early science age, particularly geometry and astrology and astronomy, it was connected to the divine for most medieval scholars, and many believed that there was something intrinsically "divine" or "perfect" that could be found in circles.
For the Chinese culture, the circle contains different meaning. A Perfect circle stands for “fulfilled”, “oneness”, “perfection”, “unity” and “round. A Square stand for “straight” and “angle”. China uses the circle and square as a representative of the concept of in Chinese philosophy. It applied in different areas such as pattern, architecture and food in China. It is the process of something coming full circle that bears the most importance.

Therefore, I analysed keywords based on the research. Keywords: Circle, Square, Chinese philosophy

Research Focus: To look at the research in Chinese culture which is around the shape of circle and square.
Audience: Cross-Culture seeker
Media: Branding, Editorial design, Art direction, infographic
Why: Classify Circularism as a new art movement Make it become a new universal language. Promote the new art movement to the western country. Suggest the new way of communicating the Chinese philosophy concept in order to promote the thought of conditing oneself to others to western people by using shape as a language.
Outcome/How: An editorial project with an interactive function.
What: An innovative editorial project translates a circularism art movement and provides a new experience of Chinese philosophy.
