what's the context about david malukas?
ok quickfire recap:
david malukas signs a contract to drive the #6 car for mclaren this season
david breaks his hand in a cyling accident before the season starts
callum ilott fills in for him for the first two races
david's injury is worse than expected and the recovery is taking a while
callum has a wec clash so théo pourchaire fills in and does decently well
david still has not recovered and there is a clause in his contract that mclaren can fire him if he misses a certain number of races. mclaren takes that out and fires him
théo signs with mclaren full time for the rest of the indycar season (except the indy 500, which callum does), dropping out of super formula
théo has an incident with agustin canapino on track in detroit, gets hate messages and death threats, mclaren rallies behind him and publicly stands up for him and ends a business partnership with JHR, agustin's team
JHR suspends agustin for a race, nolan siegel races road america for them instead
david malukas finally recovers from his injury :) and signs with meyer shank for the rest of the season, starting with this weekend
nolan siegel wins le mans in the lmp2 class with united autosport (which is owned by zak brown)
yesterday: théo tweets about how excited he is to race at laguna seca this week
today: mclaren announces that nolan siegel will drive the #6 car for the rest of the season starting this weekend AND that nolan has a multi year contract
which leads us to david malukas's tweet which was deleted within less than 10 minutes
basically it's a response to mclaren putting a 3rd replacement in the car when david is already back on track himself
also edit: IMPORTANT CONTEXT, théo was not doing badly for a rookie and it does not seem like there is any reason to replace him from a results standpoint at this point

mick schumacher is interviewed about his decision to join wec and what he's learned from sebastian vettel and his family [part 2/2] - 2024 (transcript under the cut)
Interviewer: "Did Sebastian Vettel help you with your decision?" Mick: "We've spoken about it a couple times, and obviously I always go back to people that I can trust in understanding on also what their thought is of, let's say, some of the choices that I would wanna make. Obviously we spoke about different things, and for me, there was the least compromise that I had to do in going to WEC, and Sebastian definitely agreed with that." Interviewer: "Sebastian and you are friends, and he gave you some advice for your career. Which is the most important, from your point of view?" Mick: "Honestly, I don't think I could pinpoint one of them because there were so many. We've spent so much time together, especially when we were racing together in '21 and '22, and there was just so much that I learned from him, so much that I put into place for my own, let's say, racing career. Yeah, a lot of the challenges that he faced, which I had thought were maybe not normal, he said they were very normal, so it really helped me to understand autosport a bit better." Interviewer: "Okay. Many F1 drivers choose WEC, like Giovinazzi, Buemi, and how do you explain it?" Mick: "Formula 1 is a very European-based championship. It always was, and I think most of the time it will always be that way, which means that a lot of people have their homes in Europe. Obviously if you move to Japan or if you move to the United States, that's your choice, but it is gonna be a very different life to what you have in Europe, and to me that was one of the criteria, so I iamgine that that's probably going to be one of the criterias for other people." Interviewer: "Okay. And your father, your uncle were F1 drivers. Your cousin, David, is a racing driver. How much do you talk about motorsport in your family?"
Mick: "As you can imagine, we talk quite a lot. It's always a big topic, and sometimes we have to go into the position where say, okay, look, let's not talk about motorsport right now, 'cause we've talked about it the whole year. Let's keep one day where we don't talk about it. But most of the time… I think there hasn't been a day in my life where I haven't at least once either thought or talked about racing, or motorsport, or cars, in that sense, so I think that will be the same way for the rest of my life, to be honest." Interviewer: "I asked you that because I had another questiona bout that aspec.t Have you ever been tired about being surrounded by people so involved in motorsport? Because your father, your uncle, your cousin are all drivers." Mick: "No, because, at the end, it becomes a second family and you get to know so many people and people that are great; great personalities, great people. Also people off the track that you can hang out with. Obviously you also have the complete opposite, of people that you don't want to see outside of work, but it's the same in any… If you go a nine-to-five job and you work at an office, there's also gonna be that one person that you understand yourself pretty well with and you're gonna spend some time with outside of work, but then also the people that you cannot deal with outside of work but have to work with. So no, the answer is I don't get tired of motorsport and of motorsport people, because we share the same passion and we have the same love for racing." Interviewer: "And what did you learn about from them? Sorry." Mick: "You mean in general, from people in racing? Interviewer: "From your family; father, uncle…" Mick: "As I said about Sebastian, I think there's so many things I have… Everything that I know and everything that I've learned is because of them, and obviously I've made my own experiences, but the roots and the basis is always gonna be what I've learned as a kid, and that's from my dad and from people around me who have supported me since day one." Interviewer: "Okay. So, Mick, thank you and, in Italian, buona fortuna." Mick: "Grazie."

Some excerpts from the new Lando Norris biography
Tumblr media
Although Lando was born into a rich family, his dad, Adam Norris, did not come from wealth himself. Adam's dad was a farmer & mum was a teacher. Adam has dyslexia and he was terrible at school and hated it. So he always has the mentality of working harder than anyone else to success
Lando and his brother Oli tried horse riding, quadbike and motorbike before eventually got into karting. Lando was 7 yo when he first started racing in karts
Adam was not willing to just buy the best equipment for his sons, instead he wanted to develop them. He approached Mark Berryman and Fraser Sheader in 2011 for help, Mark and Fraser has just founded ADD management in 2010 and their philosophy is on "developing and nurturing talents" rather than "just place them in teams", so they matched perfectly.
Mark on first meeting Lando: "for at least the first nine months he didn't listen to a word I said. "(😂😂) They were doing great with Oli because he was listening, but Lando just wasn't listening, but even then he's still winning races because he's really fast
Lando is the polar opposite now: he listens to everything Mark suggests. Brazil GP 2022 when Lando was on track, Mark texted Jon some suggestions, and Lando tried it straightaway. Out of Mark's students now, Lando is the best at "if you put something forward, he just does it".
Lando was so incredibly fast at that early age that people were convinced he/the team was cheating. One race when he was in the junior category, his lap time was so incredible that it would have put him in top 6 in the senior category
Lando had two crucial meetings in 2014, one was Jon Malvern, who's still his trainer to this day, the other was Trevor Carlin, who's the boss of the Carlin team, with which Lando competed from 2015 to 2018
Fraser approached Zak Brown in August 2016 to help bring some commercial values to ADD management. Zak at the time was the co-owner of United Autosports, a sports-car team. They agreed on a deal, and Zak then became part of the core Norris team together with Jon, Mark and Fraser. Little did they know Zak would soon became CEO of McLaren (😂)
February 2017. Charlotte Sefton was setting up a filming event on the Boulevard of MTC. She was making sure no one is on the Boulevard, tours was canceled, etc, apart from one guy "Lando Norris", who's a "VIP guest" and "it's top secret". Charlotte went "who's this guy?" and looked up on the Internet. (😂) Later that day she saw this shy kid got out of a Mini, said "hello" to her and walked to Zak's office. Days later Lando was confirmed as a junior driver for McLaren
(This book isn't as interesting as I initially thought, it's mostly "Norris raced in xxx series in year xxxx and did xyz"; but it does have a lot of quotes from people around him & some behind-the-scenes stories)

ARTICLE: "How to stay friends when you're F1 rivals" (Autosport Plus, 2019)
There's always one, isn't there? Just after you've comfortably settled into your seat, clicked the seatbelt across your lap, and are scanning for a decent film on the seat's screen in front of you - someone asks you to move.
It was on the late-night flight out of Bahrain after this year's race that F1 Racing became aware of such a scenario unfolding: passengers being politely asked if they wouldn't mind moving seats so two chums could take up seats together. The architects of this kerfuffle, the two friends who became reunited at 30,000 feet, were none other than Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc.
"We grew up together," explains Gasly. "We first met in 2005, when I was about nine and our parents became really close. As families, we spent holidays, staying on boats together in the south of France and five years later we became team-mates in karting. That year I probably spent more time with Charles than I did with my own parents.
"One of my first F1 memories was when I went to visit Charles at his Monaco home during the grand prix weekend. His parents' house was miles away from the track and yet I could hear the cars, 3-litre V10s, in morning practice. We were so far from the circuit - yet it was super impressive."
Perhaps it was no surprise Gasly was so enchanted by the sound of a racing engine, as he comes from a family steeped in motorsport. In fact, he is the third generation of Gasly to become successful on four wheels.
"I don't think a lot of people know this, but my grandmother, Yveline Gasly, was a karting champion. My father was also a racer in karting, rallying and in endurance events - and a French champion too. I also have four older brothers and three of them raced in karting.
"So, from three years of age, my mother used to take me in a buggy that she pushed around and I would make engine noises. From a very young age, I was always part of motorsport."
Tumblr media
Gasly won the French karting championship in 2010 driving for Sodikart when he was team-mate to his younger friend Leclerc, who was runner-up that year. It is the pictures of the two of them together (aged 14 and 13) that Gasly has shared with F1 Racing this month.
"We had a really good fight for the championship and it was a good time testing on tracks together and racing," says Gasly. "Although I moved on to single-seaters before Charles, we still have a very close friendship as he's a nice, kind guy."
Fifteen years after they first met the pair find themselves racing together in Formula 1, and following their recent graduation to Red Bull and Ferrari, they could easily find themselves sharing a podium once more.
In the early part this year, it's been Leclerc that has made more of an impression with his assured performances for Ferrari, while Gasly admits he still isn't yet fully comfortable behind the wheel of the Red Bull RB15.
Pre-season was blighted by two large accidents in testing and it's taken him time to get up to speed.
"It's fair to say that I don't feel as comfortable in the Red Bull as I was in the Toro Rosso last year," concedes Gasly. "In a way I found a direction quickly in the Toro Rosso to get the best out of it.
"But I've found it's a bit tricky in the Red Bull. I don't feel I can have the input I want inside the cockpit - it's quite inconsistent. It doesn't do what I expect it to do in one corner and then in another it's different again. The main thing is trying to drive the car as I would like it to be."
Tumblr media
The environment at Red Bull is notably pressurised, as former drivers and power unit suppliers will attest, but Gasly hopes he will be afforded the time to adapt. Before the season began, team boss Christian Horner admitted Gasly has been "elevated 12 months before we'd ideally like" but more recently suggested his confidence had been growing.
"He had a tough pre-season, with the two incidents in testing putting him on the back foot, but at each grand prix he's got stronger and stronger," says Horner.
"I think more seat time will be extremely beneficial to him and as we come back to circuits that he's more familiar with, I think we'll see him make further progress."
The continuity for Gasly after his first full season at Toro Rosso has been the Honda power unit - which Red Bull is using for the first time in 2019. In addition, his engine engineer has moved over from Faenza to Milton Keynes with him.
Gasly has a familiarity with the Japanese manufacturer's working practices and culture, learning much when he spent most of 2017 racing in Super Formula in Japan.
Tumblr media
Gasly made a surprise F1 debut in Malaysia that year when Daniil Kvyat was dropped by Toro Rosso, and he was surprised again when he was promoted to Red Bull for this season when Daniel Ricciardo made his unexpected decision to quit the team for Renault.
"When [Red Bull consultant] Dr Marko called me I could not believe it," says Gasly about the turn of events last August that led to his drive at RBR.
"I was so sure he [Ricciardo] was going to stay at Red Bull. At first Marko told me they were going to take their time and look at the options for next year - he said to enjoy the summer break and to try and disconnect from everything.
"Of course, it's not possible when you have something like a Red Bull drive in your mind.
I was waiting and there were two clear options, either to stay at Toro Rosso or move to Red Bull. Then Helmut called me back about two weeks later to say they had decided to take me for this year and that they thought I was the best option for the team for 2019."
Gasly's promotion has pitched him as a direct rival to his old friend Leclerc, but don't expect their on-track duel to come between their friendship. Indeed, don't be surprised to see the pair holidaying together again this year.
"We still text a lot, although it's harder now with our agendas to organise things, but every year we try and plan a trip away together in the summer," says Gasly. "It didn't happen last year, but we'll try again this year."
Better make sure they book the plane tickets at the same time then, to avoid any more last-minute seat-swapping...

Tumblr media
Robert Kubica, Louis Deletraz and Rui Andrade overhauled pole sitters and early leaders Filipe Albuquerque, Phil Hanson and Frederick Lubin in the No.22 United Autosports car to win comfortably. It was Filipe Albuquerque who controlled the early running but when Kubica took over the No.41 WRT Oreca-Gibson after Rui Andrade's first stint, the Belgian team started to take control of the race.
