As I get ready to return to Park City for the first in-person Slamdance in years, I’m so incredibly excited and proud to produce the first ever in-person presentation of our Unstoppable program that showcases work by filmmakers with visible and non-visible disabilities. For those of you who don’t know I was born with clubbed feet and hip dysplasia which caused me to be in and out of a wheelchair until the age of 6. As someone born with a disability I’m so grateful to have a role in creating a space that recognizes disabled artists. To all our filmmakers, programmers and my colleagues, thank you all for making this possible. If you’re in Utah January 20th-26th don’t miss this program, if you’re at home catch on the slamdancechannel.com January 23rd - 29th!!! #slamdance2023 #unstoppable #unstoppable23 #universityofutah #treasuremountaininn #parkcity #slamdance https://www.instagram.com/p/CnYcVvsO8kH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It appears the University of California, Berkeley will offer a course on the superstar. The professor who is rumored to be teaching the course took to Twitter to reveal the title “Nicki Minaj: The Black Barbie, Femmecee & Hip-Hop Feminisms” But not everyone is cheering the idea as the singer has come under fire before for some themes and lyrics. But many students believe her music offers a new take on feminism from a female artist at the top of a male-dominated rap scene. “I think she had broadened the definition of what it means to be a feminist and how we are reciprocal to music that portrays our bodies in different ways,” said Escobar. Cal students are practicing their own rap skills, hoping the 10-time Grammy nominee will make a guest appearance after she tweeted about the course saying she would love to stop by. It's not the first time pop culture has entered the classroom. UC Berkeley studied Frank Ocean in the past and San Diego State and NYU have hosted courses highlighting Bad Bunny and Taylor Swift. A deep dive into music culture students believe is more about society than the artist themselves. UC Berkeley released a statement Monday afternoon thanking everyone for their interest, but noting the course is still in the idea stage and under review. "We appreciated the interest in this topic. The instructor’s course proposal is in the idea stage and is in the early process of departmental planning and review. Once developed and approved, the course would be part of an African American Studies Special Topics in Cultural Studies course the instructor is scheduled to teach this spring. It is too soon to offer much more information at this point. Thanks again for your interest,” the university said. —Velena Jones, NBC Bay Area Follow @inkagnedotv #umass #fightingirish #whyilovephilly #southbay #universitycity #mrscarter #igers_seattle #riri #pacificbeach #universityofutah #kardashians #syracuseuniversity #sdsu #upenn #loveandhiphop #illini #bhadbhabie #sandiegolife #harvard #katyperry #uofa #oregonducks #queenb #philly #phillysupportphilly #southphilly https://www.instagram.com/p/CjrDqiPpW6L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A mental diagnosis that helped my college career
“Uh, I’m ok,” I say as my friend urges me to come meet her friends. I’m reluctant to go, but I introduce myself anyway. Meeting new people means I have to actually talk. My friend ignores my silent resistance as she drags me closer to the large, intimidating group. The circle opens up as we approach, and a happy burst of energy exudes from the group. I’m uneasy. Sweaty palms, dry throat, and trying to muster up a smile. I could hear the heartbeat in my ears. They start greeting me, and I greet them back the best I can. My face feels hot, and it felt like I was having an out-of-body experience. I felt pathetic.
Tumblr media
(My mind is in a constant limbo)
I was officially diagnosed with social anxiety around the age of 18. As a child, I was stamped as, “oh, she’s just shy,” or “it’s just a phase, she’ll grow out of it.” I could feel the anxiety even as a young child. I never invited friends over for birthday parties, because I hated being the center of attention. At school, I grew a habit of averting my eyes whenever the teacher asked for an answer to a question. Unlike most people, I favored group projects, because then at least I could present in front of the room with three other members.
Tumblr media
(Looking at the uncertainty from the inside, out)
My confidence rose a little in high school. I still felt judged no matter where I went or who I talked to, but an inner voice would tell me it was silly to worry about things like that. My freshman year of college was tough. I was staying in a dorm with five other girls and the amount of college work was overwhelming. Everywhere I went, a constant, “It’s ok” looped over and over in my head. Even in my classes with over 70 people, I worried about them judging me. Was I sitting weird? Why were they staring? My suitemates didn’t help the situation. They would invite friends over every other night, and when I opened the door, I could feel my face turn red even though I knew they weren’t looking at me.
Tumblr media
(The rest of the world vs me)
I didn’t want to admit I had a problem, but eventually I caved and went to get diagnosed. I felt slightly relieved when she said I had social anxiety disorder. It was step one into figuring myself out. Because my symptoms were not crippling, I decided to go the non-medicated route. I would be lying if I said that everything is all flowers and sunshine now. I still feel nervous when I step out of the house. I still practice conversations in my head thousands of times before saying them out loud. But I am facing my demons.

a summer in montepulciano ✸

I leave for Italy in a little less than a month. I also just spent a good 45 minutes writing this cute and ~ quirky ~ post on my phone, to then check an italian word on google translate, just to come back and haven lost all the words. Dope. Here we go!
Okay, so I’ll try again – I leave for Italy in a little less than a month! AH! Through the University of Utah, I am participating in an Intensive Language Learning Abroad program for a month in an Italian town called Montepulciano.
The photos above are from my first time in Italy a few years ago with my family. (Milano, to be exact.) Most tourist you talk to that have been to Italy will say that you don’t need to know Italian because most of the locals do.
Well, I’m an asshole and my family is a little bit too, but in the way that we are pretentious and go travel the ~ unbeaten path. ~ (Wow, sorry mom, dad and Ash for describing us as assholes…)
Anyways, unbeaten path… this is why I was happy to have my dad traveling with us, who is fluent in Italian. After this trip, I knew that my remaining time spent getting my bachelors would also include learning the Italian language.
This is when Montepulciano comes in. Mondays through Thursdays will be spend in town at class, learning Italian. After class might include traveling to nearby towns, eating gelato, exploring the town we are staying in, eating pasta, studying by the pool (again, I’m an asshole and where the students are staying has a POOL!) and probably eating more gelato.
Weekends will include all of the above as well as excursions to Assisi, Sienna, Firenze, Roma, Cinque Terre and Venezia.
We are this far in and I realized that I should probably let you know… this. is. not. a. blog. What is it, then? I don’t know yet, but I am doing it anyways. (Plot twist - at the end of this, I will refer to it as a blog. Are you confused yet? Good, me too.)
Okay, now that thats out of the way… I should also let you know more about, not me, but my writing. A few weeks back I completed my remaining finals for spring semester and submitted my final paper for Rhetorical Criticism.
Soon after that, I received feed back on a peer review on that paper. First comment was that I am, “not professional enough.” Immediately, I took to twitter to share such a helpful and professional (lol) comment. Offended? Never. I’ve gotten similar feedback… that I’m TOO sarcastic, TOO creative, TOO much.
So… not professional enough. I am headed in the right direction because a 9 to 5 job sounds like my living hell. So… welcome to this little… dare I say… blog. An unprofessional, too creative, too sarcastic, too much of everything… blog.
Here’s to run on sentences, mediocre grammar, beautiful photos / videos (I’m a decent photographer but I will also be in ITALY.. so like heaven on earth,) an obnoxious amount of parentheses, a cuss here / there and more of what I enjoy most, sharing stories.
STA SUCCEDENDO TUTTO (!)

All images, ideas and words are my own unless other wise stated.

Sell Yourself
Overall my experience in my undergrad has been nothing short of extraordinary. I have gone from a young girl unsure of her future, no direction, no prospects to a mature woman with years of education that tell the story of who she became. I treasure the lessons I learned about my resilience through failure. I have learned a lesson today. A big one.
After applying for the Presidential Internship and not being selected even for an interview, I have decided that I am more than qualified for that position, but did not do a great job at showing it. My resume could use some work. My personal statement is not thought-provoking. I have been through a lot and have worked hard to get where I am. More so than many of my peers, but I have never been willing to milk that.
I come from a poor family and have raised most of my siblings. Neither of my parents graduated high school. I am the first in my family to go to college and I have fought for everything in my career. I have been told by those who have worked with me that I am definitely going places. These people can vouch for my work ethic and abilities. However, I am not often chosen for the things I apply too. It wasn’t until I was nominated for prestigious positions that I realized that I wasn’t setting my sights too high and that I was, in fact, good enough. If people just took the time to get to know me, they would see. I am not often given that chance.
It is time to take action. I need to work on my applications and personal statements. I need to learn to sell myself. It was something I have hated the thought of. I know so many fake people who lie and exaggerate to get that interview. This doesn't mean that I need to lie or cheat my way to the top, but I do need to be more competitive. I can rise to the challenge. Time to roll up my sleeves and get to work.
