THE MISFORTUNE AND REDMPTION OF DIEGO BUONANOTTE, A STAR ONCE BILLED AS THE NEW AIMAR

“Why couldn’t it have killed me?” pondered Diego Buonanotte years later. His father’s black Peugeot 307 was almost unreckonable, a twisted lump of gnawed metal rendered completely useless. The French hatchback had skidded off a rain-soaked and below par-maintained Route 65 before smashing into a tree.

A trio of Buonanotte’s closest friends – Gerardo Sune, Alexis Fulcheri and Emanuel Melo – made the mistake of not wearing their seatbelts and were pronounced dead at the scene. As well as terribly claiming three young lives, the accident, in late December 2009, would shape the future of a 21-year-old star with the world at his feet.

In April 1988, almost two years after his famous namesake had lifted the World Cup trophy for Argentina in Mexico, Diego Buonanotte was born in Teodelina, a small Santa Fe town on the border with the province of Buenos Aires.

Buonanotte had joined River Plate as a 13 year old and he made his full professional debut in April 2006, ten days short of his 18th birthday, replacing Gonzalo Higuain in a game against Instituto.Daniel Passarella, the River Plate legend who captained Argentina to the World Cup in 1978 in their very own stadium, El Monumental, was the man who gave him his first taste of action in the famous white shirt with the diagonal red sash.

In November 2007 Buonanotte’s rising star was acknowledged by World Soccer, with the attacking midfielder making the magazine’s ’50 Most Electrifying Teenagers on the Planet’ list. The diminutive forward, whose five-foot three-inch stature earned him the nickname El Enano (The Dwarf), was named 12th, ahead of future World Cup winners Toni Kroos, Juan Mata and Mesut Ozil .

Forecasting the future of young footballers is far from an exact science and while several have gone on to do great things – including the abovementioned trio – it must be noted that an equal amount have faded into darkness. Regardless of what the future would or wouldn’t hold, Buonanotte’s selection was a sure sign that his appearance and potential had clearly been noted.

Buonanotte stamped his name into River folklore in June 2008 by inspiring his team to victory and sealing the 33rd domestic championship in their history, in the process. River Plate were greeted by the traditional El Monumental ticker-tape welcome, with the stimulated atmosphere inspiring the hosts to take the lead with a practiced set piece.

With the Olimpo defence expecting a deep, whipped-in free-kick, the ball was instead cunningly dragged to the edge of the box. As the defence were drawn to their own goal like a magnet in anticipation, Buonanotte went in the opposite direction, finishing first time from 20 yards with his left foot. The jubilant youngster ran straight into the waiting arms of his manager, a black-suited Diego Simeone.

The visitors, not reading the script, equalised in the second half but that only set the scene for Buonanotte to once again take center stage. Ariel Ortega , by then a 34-year-old veteran suffering from alcoholism, was still capable of moments of magic and he proved it in this game.

Receiving a pass from Radamel Falcao, El Burrito, the necromancer to Buonanotte’s apprentice, played a clever disguised pass that split the Olimpo defence, allowing Buonanotte to finish from a tight angle with his weaker right foot. El Enano crossed the running track encircling the pitch, before diving to the ground and taking up the applause of the adoring River faithful. A new king of El Monumental was crowned – or so it looked.

Two months later, Buonanotte’s star would continue to rise when he was selected for the national team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The team, captained by Juan Riquelme and including such stars as Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria, won their first two group games. Buonanotte received his chance to shine in the final match of the first phase, a nail biter against Serbia in front of 54,000 fans at the Workers Stadium.

Argentina held a slight 1-0 lead until the 84th minute when Buonanotte was tasked with the taking of a free-kick, despite the presence of set-piece luminaries such as Ever Banega and Riquelme. Showing a perfect technique, Buonanotte wrapped his left foot around the ball, bending it over the wall and into the goalkeeper’s bottom left-hand corner, before being embraced by his legendary captain. Although he failed to make a further appearance, Argentina went on to win the tournament, giving the youngster a gold medal and memories to last a lifetime.

Further international recognition, this time in a more noticeable role, came when Buonanotte inspired Argentina to a third-place finish at the prestigious Toulon Tournament in 2009. Ravishing opponents with his dribbling, through balls, and the ability to draw a foul, Buonanotte finished as the tournament’s joint top scorer and emerged as one of its brightest stars. It seemed that the gifted midfielder was next on the long Argentine production line of potential stars, until the fateful accident in December later that year that turned his world upside down.

Whilst in ICU, Buonanotte was heedless to the plight of his three friends, with concerned hospital staff keeping the bad news from him for as long as they could. A broken collarbone and humerus, as well as a lung contusion, were just some of the injuries suffered by Buonanotte. However, the physical injuries would pale in comparison to the mental scars he would carry with him for the rest of his life.

Less than four months after the crash, and three ahead of schedule, Buonanotte returned to the pitch as league leaders Godoy Cruz visited El Monumental. River were on a dismal run of five games without a goal, they were dangerously close to the bottom of the table with only 14 points from as many games.

Two weeks later he scored the first goal of his comeback in a 2-1 victory over Vélez Sarsfield, controlling a cross before half-volleying the ball home. The roar of the crowd was deafening, and it seemed that the demons had been momentarily exorcised. The thrilled player removed his shirt in the midst of the wild celebrations, displaying a support on his right arm to protect the humerus he broke in the car crash.

The joy of his second coming at El Monumental wasn’t to last. In late December 2010, Buonanotte complained that River Plate’s technical staff weren’t showing him sufficient respect, although he claimed that Passarella was always nothing but supportive. The following month his boyhood club accepted a £3.8m offer from Spanish side Málaga, backed by the billions of Qatari royal Nasser Bin Abdullah Al Thani.

With Chilean Coach Pellegrini in the dugout who previously coached Los Blancos , the Andalusian club were hoping to stop the La Liga duopoly of Barcelona and Real Madrid, and the exhilarant signature of a talented young Argentine star was another piece in a team with big name signings. Buonanotte signed a five-year contract with the La Rosaleda outfit, joining his new teammates in the summer of 2011.

A burden was lifted off Buonanotte’s shoulders in March 2011 when a Junín court ruled that he was not responsible for the accident that caused the death of his three friends. He was deemed not to have been speeding or driving dangerously, and his bloodstream was clear of drugs and alcohol. The weather and a meagerly maintained road were both looked at as causes in what amounted to a tragic accident. Although the emotional torment couldn’t be erased with the striking of a judge’s gavel, it at least meant he was declared innocent of a potential manslaughter charge that could have led to five years in prison.

His first season in southern Spain represented a transformable period, with Buonanotte making just ten league appearances as Málaga recorded a fourth-place finish, the highest in their history. Starting just five games and recording 454 minutes of playing time in all competitions, the youngster played second fiddle as big-name signings such as Isco, Santi Cazorla, Van Nistelrooy and Argentine compatriot Martin Demichelis stole the show.

Despite the departure of some big names as Al Thani’s Málaga project appeared on the verge of collapse, Buonanotte still couldn’t manage to force himself into Pellegrini’s plans. He started just nine games in all competitions in 2012/13 before bidding farewell to Málaga, moving across Andalusia to Granada in January 2013 for €2m. However, the same lack of football that blighted his stay at La Rosaleda followed him to the Estadio de Los Cármenes, with just 15 starts in 18 months ending a far-from-fruitful three years in Spain which saw his progress stall.

In recent years, Buonanotte has become somewhat of a nomad, spending six-month loan spells in Liga MX with Mexican side Pachuca and with Quilmes in his homeland. Under the auspices of Uruguayan manager Gus Poyet, He enjoyed a more enjoyable spell in Greece, scoring 11 goals in 19 starts to help AEK Athens win the Greek Cup. However, he would start 25 games on the bench and, as his career wore on, looked more like a squad player, one could not make a significant impact on a usual basis.

Buonanotte’s most recent move came in July 2016 when crossed the Atlantic once more, heading back to South America to join Chilean side Universidad Católica. His form was imperious as Los Cruzados captured the 2016 Torneo Clausura, scoring a total of eight goals including two braces and a purple patch of four goals in five games. Nonetheless, his journey to the domestic championship, his first since 2008 when he got onto the scene as a fearless happy-go-lucky youngster, was not without its hiccups on the road.

In November 2016, in a 2-2 draw with rivals Colo-Colo, an opponent of the other team did the unthinkable and attempted to use Buonanotte’s agony over the fatal car crash to unsettle him. “Hey murderer,” Colo-Colo midfielder Esteban Pavez shouted, “you killed your three friends!” Showing a maturity that belied his age and physical stature Buonanotte, visibly upset by the comments, kept his composure. Refreshingly, Colo-Colo stalwarts rounded on Pavez, scolding him for his ungentlemanly behaviour and apologising to the Argentine on his behalf.

Buonanotte later remarked that he was used to hearing it from opposition fans, par for the course given the tribal nature of football fandom, yet hearing it from a fellow professional was a different matter altogether.

Playing dazzling football, Universidad Católica’s 2016 Torneo Apertura triumph ensured they kept their title and won back-to-back championships for the first time in their history. Buonanotte was voted MVP of the tournament and made up a great bond with Nicolás Castillo on and off pitch, with the duo combining to score 21 goals.

However, as has seemingly always been the case for Buonanotte, a peak preceded the furrow. Castillo’s loan spell ended and the productive partnership was prematurely broken up. This was one of the factors that explains UC’s poor 2017, which produced one of their worst seasons in recent memory. Buonanotte suffered further emotional heartache in October 2017 after hearing the news that his father had a stroke. The doting son immediately flew across the Andes to his homeland, missing three games with the support of his coach, Mario Salas.

It’s almost a bit of fate that, given his father’s ill health, Buonanotte connected with a fatherly figure such as Salas. The Argentine posted a photograph on Instagram with him and his coach in a tight embrace in that clearly displayed the mutual affection and fondness shared by the pair. In the accompanying words, the player thanked Salas for helping him rediscover his love for football, for reminding him that they are humans before they are footballers and coaches, and for calling him every day whilst he was in Argentina to offer his support when it was most needed.

13 years after that whirlwind few months where he helped River Plate to the league title and picked up an Olympic gold medal, it remains to be seen what the future holds, though lifting the 2018 Primera División with La Católica has given him another career highlight.

A talented youngster who seemingly had the world at his feet, he’s perhaps never truly recovered from the terrible car crash that killed three of his friends, temporarily injuring the footballer physically but leaving him with indelible psychological scars.

Parenthood and the ill-health of his father recalibrated his priorities to the point where football wasn’t always his number one focus anymore. Although he hasn’t achieved what he threatened to during those halcyon few months in 2008, there are still moments to look back and cherish, and the mental strength he has shown to forge any sort of career following the events of December 2009 is truly remarkable.

The New Year is always synonymous with regeneration and, after his club’s glory in 2018, perhaps the fire will burn for a while yet in Buonanotte, a man many in Argentina would be proud to see return home.

I haven’t been to many therapist offices after I started high school. This one was free, on student-life. Reproduced images of the sea were comforting enough, but it was the dreary stained carpet that reminded me where I was.

“Do you think they’re related to the night you were assaulted?”

“Yes. But I don’t know how to get rid of them. I lose sleep and then when I do sleep, I have these nightmares and I wake up more restless than if I’d just stayed up all night.”

“Hm. And how do you feel about Harry?”

“Harry?”

She nodded. “Yes, the boy in your dreams.” Her French manicured nails squeezed the top of her clipboard.

“That’s not an easy question.”

“Try.”

I sighed. “Okay…” The painted seagull in her office looked like an on-clearance print at TJ Maxx, and suddenly I wished I’d called my mother for her own version of therapy instead. Bargain shopping. “I think I hate him. But then I know I don’t. But then… I don’t necessarily like him either.”

“Do you love him?”

I laughed. “No, I don’t love him.”

“Why do you laugh?”

“I said I almost hated him and you ask me if I love him!” But my voice was a little too loud. The question stayed with me, stirring in my mind. “I think I’d know if I loved him.”

“Love looks different to different people. Finding a healthy version of love for yourself and your partner is where things can go awry. Or right.”

I remembered Harry and I talking at Alta about Madame Bovary, and how I’d told him that people love to the best of their abilities, from what they’ve learnt by their circumstances. Silence weighed in the room, and I knew she was waiting for me to elaborate on my feelings. Bleh.

“I don’t know,” I finally said. “But if this is what love looks like to him… We’re not even technically dating so this question doesn’t even apply!” I laughed again. “But then… even if we were, then... it’s not enough.”

“And what would be enough for you?”

“Stability.”

“And do you think this is possible with him?”

“Umm…” Zayn’s voice popped in my head - Harry was a magnet for infamy - and I laughed. I laughed, and I laughed...“No.”

“And why is that?”

“Because he self-sabotages. And he says things he doesn’t mean.”

“Such as...?”

A puff of breath left my lips. “Like last night, he said I didn’t have a life. And then he was comparing me to another girl. Viv. She’s like his… sister, basically. She grew up with him. But… he got really defensive and said at least she fucks me. But the fact that he said I don’t have a life?? A LIFE?? I mean shit, it’s not my fault he’s infiltrated my dreams is it?”

She shook her head. “It’s very important for you not to blame yourself. Show yourself the same kindness you’d show your friends. Renny, for example.”

Be kind to yourself.

I nodded. Those were the words my mother would say whenever I’d critique myself. Just like all those times before, the words registered, but it didn’t change anything about the frustration I felt. I was the one dumb enough to let him in. I’d let myself be dragged into him, even with every red flag hitting me in the face. I was collecting them for a meme bouquet at this point!

“Do you believe him?” she asked.

It took me a minute to hear her.

“The words he said to you,” she said. “That you don’t have a life.”

A timer beeped on her phone. She muted it. “I’d like you to write out what you want in your life for next time. Not what anybody else wants. But what Y/N wants. When you see it written out, no matter how silly it seems, having concrete answers might help.”

I was staring at my notes page, trying to think of what I wanted. I didn’t exactly have the chance to ask her what she meant by that. Did she mean career goals? Education goals? Relationship goals? What did this have to do with ending my nightmares?

A text at the top of my phone distracted me from the blank page.

Kiki: “Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about you. Get your hands on the special airhead pills from Harry’s and bring them to the DG Pretty Please Party next week. On the DL obvi.”

Viv chimed in on the group chat. “Congrats bitch! It’ll be fun for all of us.” She included the devil emoji.

This is what I got for stalling up until the last minute to walk into work. The practice was now a blatant reminder that Harry was out of my life and it didn’t help whenever I saw Lionel. It felt weird that I was seeing his dad more than him. Wrong, even.

Voices carried through the lot along with the clicking of heels. I turned my head.

Boss Lady Samantha was headed towards the elevator.

Shit, Y/N. Shit shit shit.

I got out, quietly closing the door. Better to walk with my boss than walk in late after her, right? Her red hair was let down today, ringlet curls in full effect. I could meet her at the elevator before it arrived.

But right when I was about to shout out hold the elevator Lionel walked right behind her. And I mean RIGHT behind her - there was hardly room for a Bible between them.

I hid behind my car, unsure if I was supposed to be seeing this.

Their voices were too low to hear, but his arm lingered at her lower back before the elevator opened. She got in. Alone. Lionel looked over his shoulder and I ducked further.

Through Grandpa’s windows, I saw the elevator door close. Lionel waved goodbye to Samantha and he pressed the button again.

Before chickening out, my shoulders straightened. I shouldn’t have to be the one hiding. I jogged to make it. His brows shot up in surprise as he held the elevator for me. The kindness I’d gotten used to seeing in his eyes looked hesitant this time.

“A little late today?” he asked, as soon as I’d made it in.

I avoided his eyes, nodded. It was a quiet elevator ride.

My family’s house was a ten minute drive from the practice. Enough drive time to sit on what I’d seen outside Coast Shores Medicine. It could’ve been friendly. I didn’t have to do anything about this. But in my bones, I knew that friendly isn’t what I’d seen. Lionel avoided me the rest of the day, assigning me to print out billing statements. I hadn’t seen them make out or anything, but there was a certain intimacy I couldn’t write off right away. Did Mrs. de Saude know about his close work relationships? Did Harry?

The sickening uneasiness dissipated when I heard my parent’s Home Improvement HGTV hour. Dad was already passed out on the couch, snoring at a whopping 8 PM when I walked through the door. Ignoring Mom’s tutting of “they keep you too late,” we went to my bedroom.

“Pick the nude ones,” Mom said, adjusting the spectacles she only pulled out on rare occasions (magazine reading and shoe selections). “It makes your legs look longer.” It looked like there was something more she wanted to say.

I adjusted them in the mirror, wearing the blush dress I’d bought for my aunt’s beach wedding almost a year prior. It’d never been worn. Her Spanish fiancé she’d met three months prior stole her TV set and ran off with his gay lover a week before. As I stood, the dress just barely touched the floor. Simple, really, but the way the thin straps exposed my chest rendered it elegant. I felt like I needed a long cigarette and fur coat to make it complete.

Without context, Mother suddenly burst into an annoyed huff.

“You okay?” I asked.

“Hm?” Her lashes fluttered as if she hadn’t realized she’d made a noise. “Oh, yes. I’m fine. Your father just took another one of those sleeping pills. You should never get too dependent on medication, Y/N. Drink warm milk or something.”

“Mom.”

“I’m serious!” Her stony face certainly wasn’t comical.

“I know.”

She looked me over in the dress again and caught herself, pulling me in for a rushed hug. “I’m sorry,” she breathed. She rocked me a little. “It’s just been a little rough this week.” She squeezed me tighter, then let me go. All negative energy shoved into a box that’d spring open when we all least expected it. “Have a good night tonight. Say hello to Harry for me!”

When I walked to the car she threw out, “And tell him next time he can ask you with a Cartier ring! HA! I’m joking!! ... Kind of!!!”

I smiled, waving to her at the gate as I got into my Grandpa mobile. I didn’t have the heart to tell her Golden Boy wasn’t my date.

There were two cops for every solo cup I could see littered on the ground. They patrolled the streets, but the frat house seemed unphased and restored to its former glory as I walked with Andre. Club music pounded beyond the doors, practically shaking the windows. Girls huddled up outside, holding each other’s hair back and trying to block anyone’s view from the bile, as the guys snickered over their shoulders and some pretended not to see. But the cops weren’t here to reprimand for underage drinking and public intoxication tonight. They were on watch. Stationed around the perimeter of the house and on either end of the street.

They were waiting for something else. For somebody else.

Andre seemed oblivious, practically skipping past them he was so excited. I, on the other hand, was already limping from the nude pumps.

“Wanna switch shoes?” he called back.

“Don’t make a deal you aren’t willing to keep,” I smiled, quirking a brow. “The nude would actually match your navy suit…”

He’d already walked on, fist bumping the bouncer who raised up a professional-grade camera and snapped a photo of us. When my eyes recovered from the flash, I spotted Officer Ramirez from the uniforms just beyond the frat’s ramshackle fence. He was already watching me. He raised two fingers above his brow and I nodded, curtly, even though I wanted to shrink inside myself. I hadn’t had the time to think about what I would say if he contacted me again, or if I should be the one to reach out to him.

Andre led me inside, and for once, I was glad I couldn’t hear my own thoughts. It raised ten degrees just from stepping inside. The boys were in Bond suits, but most had abandoned their jackets wherever they could - on the banister, the couch beneath the staircase, or the entrance hall. The girls had dressed up, too. This was the most covered up I think I’d seen some of them, though others still opted for above-the-knee slips.

“Oi, where’s your drink?!” Niall’s familiar voice shouted above the bass.

He pulled Andre into a side hug before we reached the dancefloor. When he saw me, Niall practically fell over.

“Y/N! What’re you doing here?�� He spluttered, whiskey in his breath. The knot of his tie was already to his chest, but he loosened it even more. He looked over his shoulder, then back to me. “Renny’s just gone to the bathroom.”

“She’s my date,” Andre stepped in, placing an arm around my shoulder. It was completely platonic but Niall’s face went to stone.

Suddenly it cracked, and he laughed, running a hand over his stubbly chin. “Oh, shit.” He laughed again. “Shit!”

Andre smiled, unaware of anything else besides the fact that Niall must be proud he showed up with a date. He patted Niall’s shoulder. “We’re going to see the big bro, I’ll find you later.” Andre nodded his head for me to follow, leaving Niall cackling to himself in the entranceway.

“Niall’s THE. MAN,” he put his hands up for emphasis. “He’s my favorite in the house besides my big. We gotta say hi, then you can run off. Oh, Renny’s here too!” He squeezed my shoulders as if to excite me, as if she’d be the reason I’d stay. Loved the girl, but I knew she’d be back on top of Niall five minutes after she was out. I just didn’t want to have to watch.

I wrung my hands together, growing nervous. I knew the reason Niall had reacted that way was because Harry was going to be here. I knew this coming into it. But I’d been expecting him to ignore me the entire night. With Niall’s reaction, I wasn’t so sure anymore. What had Harry told Niall?

Someone sloshed their beer on me as I passed, and I turned sour, rolling my eyes as Andre pushed us forward. I picked up the pace before he could notice I’d stopped and wiped the glare off my face. Or, tried. I probably just looked constipated now.

WHY WAS HIDING EMOTION SO HARD??

I felt bad feeling so annoyed. Andre was excited. I should be excited, right? Sloshed beer and sweaty bodies came with the territory. Though I’d forgotten how humid it got in here. Hell and Florida were probably cooler. I picked up the ends of my dress, hoping for some sort of ventilation to reach parts of me that were on the verge of overheating.

The coffee tables and couches had been moved from the center of the living room to the fringes beneath the stairwell to make designated smoking and dancing sections. I could’ve stayed on the outside of the dance crowd. Hell, I could’ve joined the spaced-out smokers on the couch. But I didn’t. I followed Andre to the middle of the dance floor. I could barely see above the tops of people’s heads until we reached a bit of a clearing. And by clearing, I meant the sweaty dancers in front of us who made a break for freedom and gave us about ten seconds of space before other bodies rushed to fill it.

I felt him before I saw him. A tiny prick of consciousness that directed my gaze. And Andre’s finger.

“AYYYY!!!!!” Andre pointed to the DJ booth, waving his hands as he hollered.

Even with the rocking vibration of the bass that chattered my teeth, each nerve in my body went alert. Harry stood, flashing a white smile to the crowd before downing the rest of whatever potion was in his cup. I hated how my stomach clenched just by seeing him. He saw Andre and his smile grew, grabbing the mic. I was still unnoticed, hidden by dim lighting and nameless peers.

“Who’s ready for us to win tomorrow!?” His voice was low, demanding. It was a question for the crowd, but he was looking at Andre. I could sense the intensity even there, and it was then I realized it couldn’t be just me who feels so vulnerable around Harry. Each person he traps in his gaze stays there, until he lets them go.

The house erupted in cheers, but I was locked in place. The suit he was wearing looked similar to the one from the Halloween gala, and every bit of him looked just as stunning. His beautiful body swayed on the makeshift stage.

“Then let’s see you jump in-” His hand held up 5, 4, 3, 2… He spun another song and the crowd sprung from the floor before crashing back down. They jumped to the beat he made. A modern-day puppet master.

Andre wrapped an arm around me as he jumped. So I did, too.

“That’s my big!!” he yelled, mid-air.

“WHAT??”

He pointed to the DJ booth, but there was no one there besides Harry.

“.... HARRY??! HARRY’S YOUR- your…” I stopped jumping the same second Harry saw us together. It’s funny. It takes only a second to flip a dime on its head. His party boy mask dropped in an instant. The low lighting turned his eyes black, but they couldn’t conceal the daggers he shot straight at me.

“I have to use the bathroom,” I muttered.

Andre nodded. “S’UP THE STAIRS!” He found a friend nearby and latched on to him instead.

The small (okay, medium) part of me filled with nothing but Petty™ wanted Harry to see me with his little. But another part of me couldn’t handle his judgmental glare. Somehow, I was embarrassed. I didn’t want him to think I’d come here tonight to make him jealous. That I was so obsessed with him I’d found another in to the frat. I didn’t want him to think he controlled any part of my heart. What did it say that I ran away at first sight, though?

I’d already done it. It didn’t matter. Either way, I didn’t win.

I raced upstairs, weaving my way between couples sitting on the stairs, hoping that the line for the restroom was really long and Renny hadn’t already left. It was, and she was next in line.

“Oh my God, what are you doing here?!” she screeched, arms out and eyes squinted until I could no longer see her pupil.

“Why do people keep asking me that.”

She pulled me into an extra-long, extra-tight Renny hug. “Love yousoooomuch,” she rushed. Her breath smelled like Niall as she pulled away. She lifted the cup to my lips and I shook my head. She frowned.

“I talked with Niall,” she said. “He says Harry’s just going” - she hiccupped - “through a lot right now. S’best to leave him alone.”

The other girls in line perked up at the mention of his name, subconsciously leaning closer. I huffed. “Trust me. I am.”

When three girls stumbled out of the only bathroom stall, Renny rushed in. “Thank God I was about to pee on the carpet.” She tried tugging me in with her, but my eye was on the end of the hall. And the stupid DG pretty please.

“I’ll be back,” I muttered, squeezing her hand.

“Nooooo,” she drawled.

I squished her cheeks, checked her pupils. She didn’t need me to hold her hair back this time. I gave her cheek a lil slap.

“I’ll go with you next time you have to go. Which will be in like... twenty minutes. You broke the seal rookie!” I teased.

I didn’t even bother looking over the railing at the party below to see if he was watching me. I still had my DG task and a nonrefundable deposit to think about. I didn’t think I’d get many chances to be in this house again unless I swindled Andre or Niall into letting me in. But that would require an explanation, and I wasn’t sure I could tell them that.

Forget explanations. I needed to do it now. Lots of noise. Tons of distractions. I’d just think of it as… borrowing?

His door was locked and I groaned, kicking it and leaving a smudge beside all the others. I reached for a bobby pin in my purse and put it to work. I’d done it before in his bedroom, I could do it again here. The curve of the hallway protected me from onlookers waiting in line in the bathroom. Downstairs was a mixed bag. People could probably see through the railings running along the top floor.

Not that they’d think to look.

My knees were starting to hurt by the time I heard it click. I crept in, and for some reason, I expected his room to look different. But it was still the same. Dusty desk across from a queen-sized bed. Only one photograph atop his bedside mantle. And it didn’t smell like sweaty soccer clothes, but clean. With hints of a woodland spice and books. It felt like eons had passed since I was first here, undressing him like the drunken baby he’d been. As an act of betrayal, my body rushed at the thought of how his fingers had looped around my belt loops, tugging me closer. I swallowed, the image of his tightened pants expanding in my head. He’d almost been hard, then.

It was then, at that moment, that I decided that the one sip of alcohol I’d had must have been spiked with SOMETHING because I would NOT be that girl. I would NOT. I reFUSED TO LET MYSELF-

Seconds later, my fingertips grazed his soft gray sheets. He’d been sprawled out right about here, and the rush of seeing unseen skin on Harry had been too intoxicating an offer to refuse. Even if every ounce of me wanted to dislike him, the legitimate biology behind my body responded to a chemistry I couldn’t control.

“What are you doing?”

He caught me on my knees, with one hand clutched in the sheets.

He could whip out PSYCHO magazine informing people of highly-dangerous murderers with my mugshot plastered across the cover - and I’d believe him in that moment. Oh my gosh. Omgomgomg. He didn’t say what I expected him to say when he swayed in, though.

“Andre. Really?” He laughed to himself, but it was cold. “Fucking” - he stumbled, leaning on the desk chair to catch himself- “really?”

It wasn’t the alcohol that’d put him on edge. I’d seen him handle liquor before, but this time he looked… different. I stood up, realizing his eyes were racking down my dress. I crept towards him, hoping to make it past the door. Not because I was scared of him. But because I was mortified. I’d just looked like an absolute fucking psychopath AND I’d snuck into his bedroom. Maybe I could distract him. Maybe he was too drunk to ask me-

“What’re you doing here?”

“What are we… all doing here? At parties?”

“…in my room,” he clarified.

Welp. My philosophical question fell flat. Wouldn’t be the first time.

I waltzed past him, tight-lipped. In defense of my dignity, I still didn’t owe him anything. Not after how he’d treated me.

“Hey,” his arm jutted out, blocking my way. His brows crossed as he turned to a petulant boy. “S’rude to not answer.”

My blood boiled. “You are not about to give me a lesson on how bad it is to ignore people right now. Nor on being rude.”

“Can give you another one.”

He reached for me, but I stepped back, somewhat living in the hurt that flashed in his eyes at my rejection.

“You’re not leaving.” But his demand sounded like a plead.

“Thought you didn’t want me around you,” I scoffed, tearing past him. “Just because you’re drunk or high or whatever the fuck it is you are right now, doesn’t mean you can just… get a free pass! For a week! A whole week of awful-” I turned quickly, too frustrated to find the words. I took a step towards the door but-

“Y/N.” He was right behind me. His breath warmed the nape of my neck, the delicate hairs standing on end. No matter how much of an absolute mess he was, my body didn’t know better. I could practically feel him behind me, his presence radiating an alarm that blared through my veins. I wanted him. Badly. He trailed a finger down my arm, and his hand brushed against my own against my side. “I’m sorry,” he breathed. “I’m sorry, Y/N.”

His fingers gingerly interlaced with mine, turning me around.

Something wet was on my cheek. I touched it, quickly rubbing it away in horror. Why were tears running down my face?! What unfair cruelty was this!? He saw my tears and leant down, suddenly defeated, pulling my body with him.

“Why did’ya ever want me hm?” His nose went along my jaw. Full lips pressed against the base turned my legs weak. There was an underlying desperation to his words though, a prayer in his kiss. But my thoughts were turning anything but holy.

“Who says I did…” I wanted to pull away, ask him why he’d used past tense or why he’d completely ignored me this past week, but I was frozen by the softness of his hands. Self-respect was surely slipping away each moment I lingered. I could literally see Jane Austen parting the heavens and sticking her angelic head through Harry’s room to shame me with a glare. I do all this mental work to try and figure this guy out and… for what? I should be waltzing out that door, declaring I’d never talk to him again. I should give up messy and confused and pursue my own sanity. But the air only ever turned electric with him, in all his messiness, in all this confusion… and each time the spark appeared, it pushed us closer together until he was here, like this, soft hands gently running along my lower back, skilled fingertips feeling the dress fall slightly inwards at my waist, tracing a map of uncharted waters…

“You’re not thinking straight,” I breathed. And that went for both of us.

“Au contraire, I’m thinking clearer than I ever ‘ave.” There was a swirling madness shining through, but he bat his eyes and it was veiled again, vanished beneath the dark surface. He tilted his head, appraising my body, noticing my legs were no longer tensed to run, but in apprehension for another reason completely. A smirk settled in. “Why do you still want me?” he demanded, pulling me against him towards the bed.

“Arrogant ass,” I sniped, but I landed on him anyway. His fingers tightened around my waist, a hand snaking up behind to entwine with my hair. I felt him harden beneath me as he pulled my head to the side, just the right amount of rough. But he stalled over vulnerable skin, lips ghosting featherlight up to my ear. He let out a soft breath and I clenched in anticipation. For once, I had no thoughts. “You should be with me,” he breathed. “Should be mine.” His voice grew frustrated and he practically growled, lips kissing my neck, steady, before they started to suck in a rhythm. The shock of the sensation masked the shock from his words and my back arched, a spider’s shiver crawling down my spine. He stopped suddenly, shooting back like he’d been shocked. His grip softened ‘round the nape of my neck, and he looked so… confused. “Can’t mark you again,” he noted, despondent. But then the corners of his lips twitched up in a smirk. “Least where it’s visible.” My breath caught. His black ink eyes showed the slightest ring of green. I don’t remember lifting my hand, but fingers trailed along dark circles. These were a new development. I shook my head lightly. Something was wrong. This was wrong. I leant in, resting my head against his. “Harry-” but his lips cut me off before I could mention it.

I felt like I’d been feeling his lips everywhere but my own. They were eager, but kept pace, switching it up just when I was getting comfortable, slowing to make me feel the soft fullness of raspberry-pink lips. They were pillows, and clouds, and everything else soft and wonderful that I’d want to feel forever. He slipped in his tongue, deepening the kiss, and I ground my body against him, using his shoulders as leverage.

This wasn’t me. But I didn’t care enough to think about ‘who I was’ anymore. What did I want?

I felt him pulse between my legs.

“Harry,” I bit my lip, and I knew then. I’ve been wanting more, I’ll always want more. I was more aware than ever of an emptiness he could fill.

I heard the hesitancy in his voice, some unforeseen disappointment he wouldn’t just spell out for me. “What’re you saying.”

“Just that there’s few things I want t’be sober for these days.”

The thought hit my stomach like the sharpened blade of a knife, and it hurt worse than any wound from my nightmares. “Why would you say something like that?” I demanded.

“Because it’s true.” His eyes searched mine, and I saw the sadness pulling him in. Like the tumultuous water of the middle of the ocean spirally inwards into itself. A treacherous water hole that’d carry you into its deepest abyss.

I shook my head as if to find a way out, as if that would clear away what I was seeing. “I never… know what’s going on with you,” I admitted. I thought to the interaction with Lionel and Samantha. “Is home life really that bad?”

“What home?” He huffed when I looked at him. “M’serious. I feel more alone when I walk in there than I do when I’m here. And nobody even fucking knows me here.”

“Everyone knows you.”

“You’re smarter than that, Y/N.”

“What’d you take tonight, hm?” I cooed. My hand traced the dark circles under his eyes, and he leant against my touch before looking to the window, still allowing me to touch him. No doubt from whatever stimulant or depressant he’d taken, his words had been more candid than ever before.

“A cocktail of sorts. Will fucking regret it in the mornin’. Probably.”

He looked back to me, and I didn’t have time to wipe the concern from my face. “Hey, don’t look at me like that. It’s okay. It doesn’t matter,” he stated.

He really believed it when he said it, and the way there didn’t seem to be enough energy left in him made me settle back in his arms with a frown. Because it did matter. It mattered a lot. A few moments later, he squeezed my sides. “You didn’t answer my question,” he mumbled.

“What question?”

He waited until I looked up at him, and even then he was hesitant. His voice was quiet when he spoke, intimate, so if even if someone was standing at the foot of the bed they couldn’t hear what he was about to ask.

“Why do you want me, Y/N?”

The vulnerable question hung in the air. And though it was presumptuous of him to ask, he wasn’t wrong. His eyes read me like a book he’d read a hundred times over. He saw me. I swallowed, my brain and heart at an all-out war. Unfortunately for me, they captured my tongue in a stale-mate. “I don’t know what I want.”

And it was true. The dilemma was the following:

The only thing my body wanted was him.

But my brain didn’t know if that’s what I should be wanting anymore.

And my heart was left in the middle of them both, not sure what it was feeling.

I felt him shrug. “I get it. I have so many opinions shouting at me in my head right now. About soccer, my fucked family, about” - he threw his hands between us.

After Niall had greeted me at the door, I was sure Harry had talked about us in some capacity. But how many people had opinions on our relationship? “Let me guess. Viv shares her opinion about us.”

“I don’t listen to hers.”

“But hey, at least she fucks you right.”

He sucked in a breath, shaking his head. “I didn’t mean that.”

“But it’s true, right? So no need to apologize.”

The room froze over. Just the thought of her whispering in his ear was enough to trigger an entire week’s worth of pent-up animosity.

“So maybe people are confused why Viv and I aren’t together but I couldn’t give a fuck about what they think. I fucking hate that we’re even talking about her right now.”

“What do they say?”

He rolled his eyes, hurriedly slanting his voice, “Viv’s gorgeous mate, she clearly wants you. What the fuck are you doing now?”

I flinched. He noticed. “Look, I seriously hate talking about this. Can we talk about the fact that I didn’t invite anyone tonight?”

“Aw, was Viv busy?”

“Alright, stop.”

A chill shot down my spine at the rejection. As much as I wanted to appreciate the fact he didn’t invite anyone, it didn’t help. This wasn’t helping at all. “I’m sorry if I want to talk about your relationships that directly affect me,” I said, rolling out of his arms.

“Y/N, please. It’s not like that.” His voice was tired, pleading, coaxing me to forget.

“But why are you like this? Why did you just say what you did to me?”

“You asked me-”

“It was very belittling.” I changed my voice to a dopey British accent, “Viv’s gorgeous what the fuck are you doing with Y/N?” I ignored his scowl. “Really, thanks for the best compliment of the night.” I pushed against his chest, annoyed. “And why are you being like this now? All cuddly and-”

“It’s not one-sided.”

I felt my cheeks heat. “Not tonight. But it’s one-sided any other time.”

“S’that what you really think of me?” He pulled me closer, and I fought the urge to twist away. His forehead pressed into my hair. “Firstly, you’re fucking beautiful Y/N. You have to know this. And you have to know you’re important to me. And secondly…”

“Thirdly,” I corrected.

His eyes turned somber. “They’re watching,” he mumbled, pleading. “This is hard for me, too.”

The gang, the cops, both, whichever it was, it didn’t matter. The effect was the same. No matter how special he claimed I was to him, we always went in circles. Maybe he had gotten it right. Maybe it was better for both of us if we weren’t together. “Why is it so hard then?” I whispered.

“Nothing good comes easy.”

I remained silent. It was a cop-out response.

He ran a hand down his face and sat up. “Because I’m fucked! I’m fucked, Y/N and there’s only so many people I can hide from. And you aren’t one of them.”

It was the most candid he’d ever been with me, without revealing anything at all.

A knock sounded at the door.

I went to move, but he kept me against him, covering my ears as he shouted-

“FUCK OFF!!”

But even with his hands over my ears, it wasn’t very muted. The knock grew louder, more obnoxious.

“Sorry,” he grumbled, moving to open the door. When it opened, a boy wearing a snapback around the same height as Harry leant against the doorframe.

“Wassup, man-” Snapback almost burst in.

Harry’s back went stiff as the stranger’s snapback practically poked Harry in the eye. If their overcompensating confidence and too-familiar smile told me anything – freshmen. At least Snapback’s friend wore a Bond-inspired bow-tie t-shirt.

Harry put a hand to Snapback’s chest, backing him back out of the room. They watched me walk up behind him.

“Hey, relax man, we just wanted to get some zombies,” Bowtie bargained.

“You’ve got some fucking balls,” he snarled.

My ears pricked. He was looking for the same thing, then. From Harry. My heart sunk to the lowest part of my belly after remembering why I’d come here in the first place. The sliver of hope I’d had was that maybe what Zayn had witnessed was just Harry’s past. A summer blunder. A summer fling with an illegal hobby. You know, some kids did drugs, some kids sold drugs... It was a ridiculously stupid comparison now that I thought about it. But still, I had hope. Now my undeniable denial was being shred up right in front of me.

The cops, the gang, the drugs circulating campus…

Harry had made his bed, and I was lying in it.

I squeezed past him.

“Wait, are you leaving?” He still blocked his doorway.

I ignored the pang of guilt I felt at his boyish disappointment. He looked at me, body still intimidatingly rigid, but his eyes, impossibly soft. Snapback tried to move past him again and Harry whipped his head back with a growl. “Get the fuck out of here.”

“Excuse me?” Bowtie came closer, puffing out his muscled chest. Testosterone, angst and alcohol were never the best combination. I grew nervous at the tension, looking from my escape at the end of the hall, back to Harry.

“C’mon, we have the cash. We’ll pay double!” Snapback whined, cornering him.

The words made me nauseous, conjuring the image of Viv sliding Harry the cash. I didn’t want to see this again. I didn’t want to see anything again.

“I don’t do that shit anymore.” He strode through their barricade, determined, but Bowtie tugged him back. His nostrils flared and I could tell he was trying to keep his cool. He could ruin these guys if he wanted to. I don’t know why he was letting them keep him. But I also didn’t know why I didn’t run away. It was like watching a train wreck seconds before it happened.

I stood alone, in the center of the hall, the only person on Harry’s horizon. A lighthouse hoping to steer the sailor home.

“C’mon, please man, everyone’s talking about them. We just need one,” Snapback exhorted. He put up his hands, pleading. “We’ll split one. We’ll seriously cut it in half.”

Even from here, I could see the muscles in his neck tense. I tried doing to him what he did to everyone else. I trapped him, wide-eyed, anchoring him to me. He didn’t break our stare.

As if each word scraped against his skull, “I said I don’t do that shit.”

“That’s a fucking joke. Mark got some last week,” Bowtie barked.

I saw the moment I lost him. In what world I thought I could be enough to harbor him, I had no idea. Harry snapped, kicking the steroid-pumped kid so hard in the knee, it knocked him down. It wasn’t a broken bone, but it’d leave one hell of a bruise.

“Dude, are you crazy?!” Snapback cried.

Harry raised his fist, bringing it flying. I gasped and hid my face. But I didn’t hear an impact. I faced them again.

Harry’s fist froze inches before his cheek. Facing what would have been a badly broken nose, Bowtie shook on the floor. Slowly, ever so slowly, Harry relaxed his hovering fist and folded his arms, squatting next to the quivering guy. “You’re fucking welcome I was in a good mood ‘fore you came, otherwise I wouldn’t be acting so polite.”

The squeak of a floorboard shook Harry back to Earth. He caught me walking away and his whole body straightened, once again hyper-focused on me, trying to tune in and trap me exactly where I stood. Taking advantage of his distraction, Snapback and Bowtie ran for it. Bowtie limped, running into me and knocking me off-balance as he passed.

In a second, it was just us.

“Y/N,” he began, walking towards me cautiously.

“No.”

He stopped in his tracks. He was tall, but his shoulders hung in despondent defeat.

“You were right, Harry.”

I could see how tired he was. I could see the broken pieces fitting into something beautiful. He looked so sad and regretful, I already felt guilty for saying,

“You can’t hide anymore.” And with one last look at the broken boy before me, “You are fucked.”

Suddenly, the beer on the floor was just stale and sticky. The couches were filthy from strangers’ mistakes. And the air would never be clear. Harry had been right. This entire house was filled with people who didn’t care and if they did, they were trying to forget; a place more empty than if it were vacant. It was a mess just like the boy living in it. And just like the grand house, impressive at first glance, not all of his parts were beautiful.

I ignored the way his broken pieces seemed to shatter as soon as I said it and the way it hurt me ten-fold. I ignored him calling out my name as I maneuvered through the blur of bodies, until I lost his voice on the dance floor. I could breathe better outside and I walked past the cops without acknowledging them.

From complete chaos to relative quiet, my ears rung, filling the new silence.

Maybe this was the last time we’d speak. Maybe this was how it all should’ve ended that first day in September. Because in that house, that wasn’t the Harry I thought I’d knew. That was a boy far-gone, confused, and I was falling down with him. I was ANGRY. I PITIED him. And I was angry for feeling something else I should never have felt for him.

Somehow, in this fuzzy ringing world buzzing with heated thoughts and cop lights that blurred my vision, I heard a notepad scribble as soon as I passed a squad car.

Lucky for me, Momma always said I had selective hearing.

DINNER AT EIGHT

February 18, 1940

The Campbell Playhouse (1938–1940) was a live CBS radio drama series directed by and starring Orson Welles. Produced by Welles and John Houseman, it was a sponsored continuation of The Mercury Theatre on the Air. As a direct result of the front-page headlines Orson Welles generated with his 1938 Halloween production "The War of the Worlds", Campbell's Soup signed on as sponsor. The Mercury Theatre on the Air made its last broadcast December 4, 1938, and The Campbell Playhouse began December 9, 1938.

The series offered hour-long adaptations of classic plays and novels, as well as adaptations of popular motion pictures. When Campbell’s exerted more creative control over the selection of material, Welles left the show.

Bernard Herrmann was the series’ composer and conductor. The opening theme was “Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor” by Tchaikovsky.

DINNER AT EIGHT was originally written by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber as a play which opened October 22, 1932, at Broadway’s Music Box Theatre, and closed May 6, 1933 after 232 performances.

In 1933, (the same year Lucille Ball arrived in Hollywood), the play was turned into an MGM film by George Cukor. The role of Kitty (played by Lucille Ball on radio) was played by Jean Harlowe.

The play was also revived on Broadway several times and was made for television.

Synopsis ~ The Jordan family are planning a society dinner. The story concerns what they, as well as various friends and acquaintances - all of whom have their own problems and ambitions - do as they prepare for the event.

CAST

Lucille Ball (Kitty Packard)

Orson Welles (Host / Dan Packard / Larry Renault) was three months away from embarking on his masterwork, Citizen Kane, when this radio play was aired. Before Lucille Ball dated Ed Hall and Desi Arnaz, Welles was often seen on her arm at public events. Lucy and Desi later allowed him to reside in their guest house and starred him in an episode of “I Love Lucy”.

Hedda Hopper (Millicent Jordan) was then broadcasting her own radio show “Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood” as well as writing a syndicated column. She appeared on “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.” As an actress, she did two with Lucille Ball: Bunker Bean (1936) and That’s Right – You’re Wrong (1939). Hopper was best known for her flamboyant hats.

Charles Trowbridge (Oliver Jordan) originated the role of Oliver Jordan in the Broadway production of Dinner at Eight although the role was played by Lionel Barrymore on screen. He did two films with Lucille Ball: Her Husband’s Affairs (1947) and A Woman of Distinction (1950).

Marjorie Rambeau (Carlotta Vance) was only a month away from the premiere of her film Primrose Path, which would earn her an Oscar nomination in 1941.

Benny Rubin (Max Kane) was heard on “My Favorite Husband” as well as doing an episode of “I Love Lucy” and several appearances on “The Lucy Show.”

Clara Blandick (Hattie Loomis) had just created the role of Aunt Em in The Wizard of Oz, which is what she is best known for despite her many other credits. including four films with Lucille Ball, three of those in 1934 alone.

Mary Taylor (Paula Jordan) had previously worked with Welles on Mercury Theatre of the Air.

Edgar Barrier (Dr. Talbot) was previously directed by Welles in the 1938 film Too Much Johnson.

Ernest Chappell (Announcer) served in the same capacity for TV’s “The Big Story” (1951-57)/

THE EPISODE

Orson Welles introduces the show, Kaufman and Ferber’s play Dinner at Eight. He tells the audience that we never see (or hear) the actual dinner in Dinner at Eight. He talks about his three leading ladies:

Hedda Hopper “who was a distinguished actress before she branched out into her present career of acting and ‘columning’.”

Miss Lucille Ball “is the beautiful and talented young lady who’s position in Hollywood is becoming increasingly more important.”

Marjorie Rambeau “one of the first talents of the theatre who is carving out a new career in motion pictures.”

Welles introduces Ernest Chappell, who does a pitch for Campbell’s Vegetable Soup.

“Whether you’re having dinner at eight or supper at six.”

As the story begins, Millicent Jordan (Hedda Hopper) is on the telephone inviting people to her dinner party. Her husband, Oliver (Charles Trowbridge), comes in. She tells him how the guest list is shaping up. He suggests she invite Dan and Millicent Packard, although she thinks she’s a horrible woman. Paula (Mary Taylor), her daughter, comes in. She’s engaged to be married to Ernest but is still maintaining an active social life. She’s been seen nightly at 21.

MILLICENT: “Some day I’m going to find out what goes on at 20 -- and at 22, too!”

Paula runs out. Hattie (Clara Blandick) comes in and she and Millicent gossip about that “Packard Woman”. As Hattie leaves for her shopping trip, Millicent reluctantly phones Mrs. Packard to invite her to her dinner party.

The scene cross fades to Mrs. Packard (Lucille Ball) hanging up with Mrs. Jordan. She is in bed awaiting the doctor with her maid Tina. Mrs. Packard is eating chocolates, guessing what is inside each one.

Meanwhile, Carlotta Vance (Marjorie Rambeau) barges in while Oliver Jordan is in his office on the telephone. She demands to know why the Customs Office says she cannot own six fur coats. They discuss Mr. Vance’s assets, including a theatre she is longing to sell - calling it a fleabag. She is a stockholder in Mr. Jordan’s company. He urges her not to sell. They reminisce about their younger days, when they were courting. He once proposed marriage.

Dan Packard (Orson Welles) enters the office. He recognizes her from her days on the stage. Before she departs, Jordan confirms that she is coming to dinner next Friday. Jordan and Packard talk business. The Jordan Line Shipping is in financial straights and he wants a loan from Packard, who promises to consider it.

Back at the Packards, Dan arrives to find Kitty still in bed. He complains that Jordan cannot handle his business and he aims to buy them out. Dan says he won’t go to dinner there and Kitty is not happy about it. She tries wheedling him and she mentions the dinner is for Lord and Lady Ferncliff. He says he is going to buy out Jordan using dummy stock holders.

Doctor Talbot (Edgar Barrier) arrives to examine Kitty. We learn that they are having an affair. The music swells and the scene transitions to...

Mrs. Jordan, still planning her dinner party, looking for one more man to balance her table. Hattie and Mrs. Jordan, suddenly get a brilliant idea for their final guest - movie star Larry Renault.

Meanwhile, Paula visits her paramour, Larry Renault (also Orson Welles). They are in love. She warns him not to drink so much. His agent Max Kane (Benny Rubin) has gotten him a part in a play. He tells her she should just marry Ernest. Renault has been married three times and is almost 40! His second wife drove off a cliff and his third is now the biggest star in Hollywood. Paula impulsively says she is going to tell everyone about their love - including her parents!

Kane arrives and Paula leaves to find urges him to stop drinking and get in shape. Kane breaks the news that the play is off! The new producer doesn’t want him. He’s been replaced by an English actor. Kane suggests he take a smaller role in the play. Kane suggest he humble himself to the new producer, but Renault is indignant.

“I’m Larry Renault! I don’t go to managers with my hat in my hand!”

At the Jordan home, Carlotta and Millicent talk about the party, including the invitation of Lord Ferncliff, who everyone calls “Stinky”. When Mr. Jordan comes home, she confides to Oliver that she has sold her Jordan stock. It seems she isn’t the only one who has sold Jordan stock that day.

A phone call informs Millicent that the Ferncliffs are going to Florida and can’t come to dinner after all! Just then, Paula comes home to tell her mother urgent news about her engagement to Ernest. Oliver says he is feeling unwell, and wants to go to bed instead of having dinner. Millicent is at wits end with the party cancellations and her family’s drama!

END OF ACT ONE

Ernest Chappell returns to urge mothers to get their child’s recommended serving of milk by adding it to Campbell’s Tomato, Celery, and Asparagus soups.

ACT TWO

That night, Renault is drunk. Kane brings up Mr. Stingle, the new producer of the play. Renault bullies Mr. Stingle calling him a hack. Stingle abruptly leaves. Renault blames Kane, who tells him he’s washed up in show business.

KANE: “You’re a corpse and you don’t know it! Go get yourself buried.”

Kane leaves and Renault pours himself another drink - the last one in the bottle. He’s visited by a hotel manager who tells him he’s being evicted from his suite. He calls the operator and tells him not to put any calls through. Larry turns on the gas.

At dinner, introductions are made. Seems as if Mrs. Packard already knows Dr. Talbot. Mrs. Jordan says that Lord Ferncliff’s absence is due to ill health. Carlotta brings her little dog, which she wants fed lobster. She inadvertently announces that Lord and Lady Ferncliff are vacationing, not ill at all. Everyone wonders where Larry Renault is. Paula enters and Mrs. Jordan decides they shouldn’t wait for Renault.

Paula is distracted. She phones the hotel to speak with Renault and they refuse to connect her. They mention the police and then Paula goes silent. The police would like to speak with her.

END OF PLAY

Ernest Chappell, having addressed the women at the intermission, addresses the men in the audience, touting the hearty comforts of Campbell’s Soups.

Orson Welles returns for an interview with the female guest stars. Welles insists that her participation tonight will lead to something vile in her column tomorrow! He points out that her character spent a lot of time on the telephone in the story. Welles attributes the modern gossip column to the invention of the telephone, who he jokingly credits to Don Ameche!

The Story of Alexander Graham Bell is a somewhat fictionalized 1939 biographical film of the famous inventor that starred Don Ameche as Bell and Loretta Young as his wife Mabel. Coincidentally, the film also featured Charles Trowbridge (Oliver Jordan in tonight’s radio play).

In scripted banter, Miss Rambeau recalls happier days when there were no columns, which gets Hopper hopping mad! Welles begs Miss Ball to intervene.

LUCY: “On behalf of Kitty Packard, I think Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Vance ought to call it a day - both of them. Just because a girl likes to have a bit of fun and not sit around like a piece of furniture or something you’d think butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths---”.

Welles interrupts the cat fight to bid everyone goodnight, but not without a reminder that next Sunday, Only Angels Have Wings, starring Joan Blondell.

‘DINNER’ TRIVIA

This is one of four characters named Kitty that Lucille Ball has played. Others were in Follow The Fleet (1936), Without Love (1945), and The Facts of Life (1960).

In the 1933 film version, Elizabeth Patterson plays Miss Copeland, secretary to Oliver Jordan (Lionel Barrymore). Patterson went on to play Mrs. Trumbull on “I Love Lucy.”

A clip from the 1933 film was included in “Toast of the Town’s 30th Anniversary Tribute to MGM”, a program that also featured its star Lionel Barrymore (Oliver Jordan), Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

Paul Harvey, who played the New York Times Art Critic in “Lucy the Sculptress” (ILL S2;E15) had his greatest success on Broadway as Dan Packard in the original cast of Dinner at Eight. His role was taken in the film by Wallace Beery.

A 1955 CBS television version of Dinner at Eight featured “Lucy” cast members Eleanor Audley (as Carlotta Vance), Pierre Watkin, and Tristram Coffin. She is seen above on “I Love Lucy” with Peter Bucco.

In the 1989 TV movie of Dinner at Eight, Kitty Packard (the character played by Lucille Ball on radio) was played by Ellen Greene, famous for playing Audrey on stage and screen in Little Shop of Horrors. In that musical she sings about “Lucy”!

The 1966 Broadway revival of Dinner at Eight was at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon), the same theatre where Lucille Ball did Wildcat five years earlier.

Season 4 episodes of “Here’s Lucy” were sponsored by Campbell’s Soup. The DVD includes a commercial that features Dodie Goodman and Eddie Bracken. Coincidentally, Bracken is credited with introducing Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz when they were starring in the film version of Too Many Girls in 1940, the same year as this radio broadcast.

Campbell’s Soup was immortalized in paint by artist Andy Warhol in 1962. Twenty years later he used Lucille Ball as his muse.

The 2002 Broadway revival of Dinner at Eight at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre starred Emily Skinner as Kitty (the role played by Lucille Ball on radio). Skinner played Lucille Ball on Broadway in The Cher Show which played at....yes...the Alvin Theatre!

FC Barcelona and the Indian National Congress: The uncanny resemblance

The following is a piece by Anunay Chowdhury. Anunay is a second-year student of Law at King’s College London.

Perhaps this is the strangest analogy that you would read today. FC Barcelona and Indian National Congress do not have any substantial similarity but, atypically, two of the most prominent organizations in their respective fields have much more in common than one would expect. The exit of a brilliant Brazilian player, Neymar in 2015 made Barcelona vulnerable and has been witnessing some of the most embarrassing moments in the club’s modern history. On the other side, the Indian National Congress is barely keeping up in the wake of Bhartiya Janta Party’s dominance in the national scene. A closer look at two organizations, who operate in two very distinct professions may reveal a similar flaw.

The recent headlines have put the Grand Old Party on a very fragile tactical ground. After the episodes in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, Indian National Congress is trying to salvage whatever remains of its minuscule repute in the state of Rajasthan. Sachin Pilot, a next-gen leader of the Indian National Congress and has been rumoured to be in direct conflict with local state leadership. He had single-handedly helped INC win the Rajasthan state elections in 2018. In 2015, INC only won on 21 seats out 200 in Rajasthan. The number increased to 100 seats in the 2018 election. Post his absence from the state Indian National Congress meeting; he has been dishonourably relieved from his duty as the INC Rajasthan President. As a mitigating response, the party leadership has called all the MLAs to gather in a fancy resort to contain the horse-trading from the other side – somehow the epistemology of this idea always escapes me. There were widespread rumours that Sachin Pilot was denied CMship in 2018 after the so-called resurgence of the Indian National Congress in the national scene after the near-lethal drubbing of INC after the 2014 national and state election.

The story of FC Barcelona of 2019, however coincidently, mirrors the near demise of Indian National Congress in the Indian political landscape. The FC Barcelona is the 2nd biggest club in the world by revenue - 2nd only to the national rival Real Madrid. Despite having, inarguably, the best player in the history of football, FC Barcelona has only been consistent in their dreary and insipid football. Under their former manager Pep Guardiola, FC Barcelona played one of the best football and embraced much of the identity for which they were known till date. The oozing display of possession and creativity has now decayed into relentless horizontal passing with no intent to threaten the opposing side. Almost all of their offensive movement goes through Lionel Messi, who in his day can still manage to outperform all the of the rest of the players on the field. Managers still fail to draw tactics to contain a single player in a game of 22. Lionel Messi has been, for the past two years, in a Super-Saiyan mode and has been dragging Barcelona alone. But the miracle-man still plays a team game, despite creating havoc on the field, the rules of the game remain the same – one who scores more will win. The ageing squad of FC Barcelona and dystopian management is at the core of the problem. Messi is himself 32, and he has to respect the biological limit of his body. Eight of the 20-player squad is above the age of 30. On average, 5 of the ten outfield players in a match are above the age of 30. The team does not have a classical wing player and depends on newly promoted 18-year-old Ansu Fati for occasional help. The team often seems confused and static and depend only on Lionel Messi to produce an opening for an attack. The management has spent more than 800 million pounds after the exit of the star player Neymar. Amidst the race to replace Neymar, FC Barcelona nearly killed the career of Phillipe Coutinho who joined Barcelona on the premise of winning big trophies. He has, since then, seen his former club, Liverpool FC, win everything that he was meant to win at FC Barcelona.

The ageing squad has run out of ideas, strength and passion for competing at a higher level. The manager seems reluctant to preclude ageing players due to their enormity of stature in the team. Management is disinclined to allow youth players into the first team. There seems to be a kind of hegemony of older players which undermines the managerial authority in the team selection process. Imbecilic man-management lead to expenditure on players that do not fit the requirement of the team. Barcelona is often seen succumbing to the pressure by other teams if they press high or lay deep back in defence. It only exposes off the field leadership in the hierarchy of players.

In short, Barcelona does not inspire confidence among fans, like me, that they can compete with the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Liverpool and Real Madrid. As long as they are dependent on just one man supplemented with their boring and dull tactics, lack of speed on the wings, midfielders not having freedom and creativity to anchor attacks, Barcelona is doing just everything to fall into oblivion like AC Milan and Manchester United. Fans have nothing but to sporadically orgasm on historical achievements of the club.

That surely rings a bell. The story of the Indian National Congress is the same. The recent ousting of Sachin Pilot from the Rajasthan state wing of the Indian National Congress has been linked to the weakened relations with the current Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot. Some political analyst speculates that the souring relationship is due to the growing prominence of Sachin Pilot in the Rajasthan cadre of the Indian National Congress. Ashok Gehlot felt threatened due to diminishing prospect of his son growing in the ranks of the Indian National Congress in Rajasthan. Previously, Ashok Gehlot’s push to favour his son for the post of Rajasthan Cricket Association had created a concern for the local leaders of the party[1]. This is not the first time we have seen that despotic top tier party members exercise influence over the party decisions resulting in neglecting deserving candidates.

In recent times, the progression of the local leaders to the higher posts in the party has become a big concern. Much of the consternation is due to the power-hungry party veteran that does not let grassroot-workers to climb up the ladder. Former spokesperson of the party Sanjay Jha had penned the same concern in recent columns in Times of India. Instead of introspection, party discharged Sanjay Jha of his duties. He grew very critical of the lack of transparency in the internal party matters[2]. As for the matter of corroboration, he further wrote that his colleagues in the party expressed appreciation that he raised a very pertinent issue but simultaneously was left aghast by the lack of public support[3].

The leadership vacuum is another major problem. It emanates explicitly from the fact that Rahul Gandhi does not understand politics – plain and simple. Recklessness aside, BJP installed LCD TVs in the remotest of the areas in West Bengal during the Covid-19 pandemic for Amit Shah’s virtual rally for the upcoming West Bengal state elections. As against, Rahul Gandhi uploaded a video on Facebook critiquing Modi’s policies only to realise that around 70% of the voters in the elections do not have access to Facebook. Some student in 2017 wrote to Guinness Book of World Record to enlist Rahul Gandhi as the man who lost most elections [4]. He assumed the responsibility of the President in 2017 from his mother, Sonia Gandhi. After the 2019 Lok Sabha election, as Salman Khan would choke on 21st-century film-making after watching likes of Inception, Rahul Gandhi could barely fathom the enormity of the loss. As a response, Rahul Gandhi resigned from the post of President and submitted the letter of resignation to his mother, who has since taken charge instead. Initially, Sonia Gandhi was reluctant to accept the resignation but accepted it eventually. Rahul Gandhi was projected as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Indian National Congress. The man has not held any administrative post in his entire life and managed to lose his constituency of Amethi, Uttar Pradesh was is nearly considered to be the family heirloom of the Gandhi’s. INC won 13 out of the 15 Lok Sabha elections that were held in Amethi before 2019 Lok Sabha election. The seat has been previously held by Rahul Gandhi’s father and mother – Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. These days, the former President of the INC has been reduced to memes and a universal symbol of political comic relief. In the times of alleged historical appropriation by Bhartiya Janta Party, Rahul Gandhi can be seen invoking his great grandfather – Jawaharlal Nehru, advocating on his behalf about the magnificence of his stature and his contribution to building modern India. Rahul Gandhi is nowhere near the acclaim of Jawaharlal Nehru. If resuscitated, Nehru would prefer going back to his grave than to witness the abysmal result of his progeny.

It is not the first time that the politicians are jumping the ships but what is surprising in the case of INC is the level of leadership and how they quit. Jyotiraditya Scindia was not any other leader in the Indian National Congress. He had a firm grip on the central Madhya Pradesh constituencies and had the support of 22 MLA’s while quitting the INC. As the media outlets reported, he grew discontented by the INC leadership or lack of it. Part of leadership is to maintain a close grip on prominent regional leaders and to make sure that their efforts are reciprocated. Despite delivering, Scindia did not feel having an essential role in the Madhya Pradesh government.

Once the beacon of freedom and liberty, the Indian National Congress is now in complete shambles and has been showing every symptom of an imminent implosion. The party has run out of ideas and lacks a democratic structure internally. All the next-gen leaders that were given an early opportunity by the INC, Like Sachin Pilot, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora, Priya Dutt and Jitin Prasada seems to have only cemented their resolute against Sonia-Rahul hegemony over INC. The party has no one to blame but itself for its fallout with leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot. Rahul Gandhi is not a leader and can never be a leader, in the race of gladiators; he is merely a loony tune character.

Indian National Congress needs to revamp its internal structure to revive confidence among the party members and local party workers. The party needs a leader with inherent qualities to man-manage the party to march them forward. It is running out of time to be trying to groom and spoon feed a baby adult into believing that he is a leader. The party requires a more liberated federal structure. A fresh approach to reach masses at grassroot level is the need of the hour. If there is any chance for INC to salvage anything before the 2023 election, the time is of the essence. In the period from 1998 till today, INC has had only two presidents irrespective of the result as against Bhartiya Janta Party has had ten presidents in the same period. While the one is a beacon of democratic liberal values and the other one is regarded as a fascist organization. The party has to look beyond the clutches of the Rahul-Sonia leadership. An apposite effort-reward equation has to be set among the party lines, so the deserving candidates have necessary means to prove their mettle. The communication divide between the so-called “High Command” has to be bridged by delegation and more transparency.

FC Barcelona presidentship is up for elections in 2021 with the leading candidate, Victor Font promising a bright project including bringing back Xavi Hernandez, one of the leading squad member of 2011 Barcelona squad and a close apprentice of Pep Guardiola, as the head coach of the team. Xavi promises to bring back the electrifying football of FC Barcelona with particular reliance on youth and academy players. It remains to be seen what Indian National Congress would do to stop leakage of prominent next-gen leaders out of the party. How congress party will approach the 2023 general election would set the tone for the ultimate future of the party.

Messi muted as 10-man PSG draw with Marseille

Lionel Messi was kept quiet as 10-man Paris Saint-Germain settled for a 0-0 draw with bitter rivals Marseille in a heated atmosphere in Ligue 1 on Sunday (Oct 24).

The meeting of French football's biggest rivals was briefly held up on more than one occasion as objects were thrown from the stands when PSG players went to take corner kicks.

There was another interruption in the second half when one young man invaded the pitch and approached Messi before being escorted off by a legion of security staff.

It was that sort of night for PSG, who could not get into their stride and were reduced to 10 men when Achraf Hakimi was sent off in the second half following a VAR review for a last-man challenge on Cengiz Under just outside the box.

The game was also marked by two goals that were disallowed in the first half for tight VAR offside decisions, one an own-goal by Marseille defender Luan Peres and another at the opposite end from Arkadiusz Milik.

It is a perfectly acceptable result for Mauricio Pochettino's side, who have lost just one of their opening 11 matches in Ligue 1 and are seven points clear at the top from Lens in second.

However, the performance of PSG's attacking superstars will again come in for scrutiny.

Pochettino selected Messi, Neymar and Angel Di Maria in a line of three behind Kylian Mbappe but that quartet was kept quiet for most of the game by a hard-working Marseille side.

Messi was coming up against Jorge Sampaoli, who coached the six-time Ballon d'Or winner at the 2018 World Cup when in charge of Argentine, and who is now on the Marseille bench.

The former Barcelona man scored twice for the Qatar-owned club in their 3-2 midweek win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League, but here he rarely looked finding the net.

A close-range header that was tipped over by home goalkeeper Pau Lopez in the first half was the closest Messi came.

All of his three goals in a PSG shirt have come in the Champions League, while he is yet to score in the French league, even if this was just his fourth Ligue 1 appearance.

Hakimi sent off

The visitors, who were deprived of any travelling support amid concerns about potential crowd disorder, thought they had gone in front in the 14th minute.

Neymar's ball across goal looking for Mbappe was turned into his own net by Peres, but the goal was disallowed for an offside against the world's most expensive player.

Milik then had a goal at the other end ruled out midway through the first half.

The Polish striker controlled a low ball into the box from the right and fired in but the goal did not stand because Pol Lirola was just offside before crossing.

PSG lost Marco Verratti to injury just before half-time and had Hakimi sent off in the 57th minute for shoving over Under, a yellow card upgraded to red after another VAR review.

Di Maria was sacrificed to allow Pochettino to send on another defender and Marseille had chances, with Valentin Rongier and substitute Konrad de la Fuente both missing from close range.

Mbappe was denied by a brilliant William Saliba challenge at the other end, and Marseille are fourth with a game in hand.

Earlier Lens beat Metz 4-1 to stay second, with Wesley Said scoring twice, while Nice are third after coming from two goals down to beat Lyon 3-2.

Karl Toko-Ekambi gave Lyon the lead and Houssem Aouar doubled the away side's advantage.

Youcef Atal got one back for Nice with nine minutes left before Lyon had Tino Kadewere sent off.

Andy Delort equalised with a penalty in the 89th minute and 20-year-old forward Evann Guessand won it in stoppage time for the home team.

There were also wins for Monaco, Rennes and Troyes.

Messi is now one Ballon d’Or win ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or award for the world’s best player for a record sixth time.

It is the 32-year-old Argentine’s first Ballon d’Or since 2015 and comes after he scored 54 times for club and country in 2018-19, in which Barca won La Liga.

Virgil van Dijk was second – one of four Liverpool players in the top seven, including Sadio Mane in fourth.

Juventus and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the award five times, was third in the voting.

England defender Lucy Bronze was beaten to the women’s award, finishing second behind Megan Rapinoe, who was Golden Ball winner as USA claimed a second successive World Cup in 2019.

Liverpool keeper Alisson won the inaugural Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper, ahead of Barcelona’s Germany international Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Brazilian compatriot Ederson of Manchester City.

Defender Matthijs de Ligt took the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best under-21 player and selected by former Ballon d’Or winners.

The 20-year-old, who joined Juventus this summer after helping Ajax reach the semi-finals of last season’s Champions League, beat Borussia Dortmund and England forward Jadon Sancho to the award.

Messi’s win means the Ballon d’Or award has been won by a player from Spain’s La Liga in each of the last 11 years, including last year’s winner Luka Modric, who broke the 10-year Messi-Ronaldo monopoly on the prize.

The Argentine forward recently notched up 700 appearances for Barca, during which time he has scored a phenomenal 614 goals while winning 34 trophies, including 10 La Liga and four Champions League titles, and a host of other records and awards.

“I was close, but there was just someone a little bit better.

“I’m very proud of what I achieved last year with Liverpool and Holland, and hopefully we can do that again this year. But that will be tough with those guys around here still.”

What is the Ballon d’Or?

The Ballon d’Or has been awarded by France Football every year since 1956, with England’s Stanley Matthews the first winner.

It was only for European players until 1995, when it expanded to become open for any player at a European club. From 2007 it opened up to the rest of the world.

The 30-man list of nominees is compiled by the editorial staff of the French magazine, with the winner voted for by journalists from around the world, with one representative per nation.

From 2010 to 2015 it merged with Fifa’s awards, but they split and the world governing body set up its own awards again in 2016.
