Adding on to the discussion of An's grief with personal experiences:

I lost a very dear relative of mine (to pancreatic cancer, coincidentally) right before LUtF was leaked. It was leaked around the time of the funeral. It's a bit hazy now, but I would alternate between sobbing and being completely numb. And when I was numb, it was easier to act normal. It was easier to push aside the grief for a bit to focus on other things, because the world doesn't just stop even though you want it to. Work and school (the latter wasn't applicable to me for a number of reasons but still) and such still happen. Compartmentalizing happens as a result.

I think An might have done some compartmentalizing herself. Plus, she had been grieving at least slightly since Nagi "left to tour in America" without saying goodbye. That probably made it a bit easier for her to compartmentalize.

Also, grief is not linear regardless of what psych books say. It's just... it's not. Sometimes people skip or repeat steps, and I imagine she repeated a lot of anger and depression even after she had accepted Nagi's death. I still don't think she's really over it, and probably won't be for a long time. Do I wish we got to see more of An grieving? Absolutely. I wrote a platonic MizuAn piece specifically for that reason. But I also understand they couldn't exactly stop the plot just for An to grieve.

(in reference to this) Thank you so much for sharing. I agree, I do think An probably had to compartmentalize with things. She had exams happening at school and rad weekend to surpass so it was definitely something that she would have to be pushing to the side. there's definitely shades of this when we see her talking about nagi in vbs related content vs what she's doing in mixed events and such like lsh.

i feel like a lot of characters have undexplored/underutilized angst. this post is going to be extremely biased™️towards my favorites, but characters like ichika, kohane, and all of more more jump really but especially minori and shizuku are who i'm talking about. i'm not saying that proseka should be needlessly slapping angst onto their stories just for shock value and fun because that's just pointless and not enjoyable to read; i just think that the angst these characters already have is usually underexplored by the fandom and game itself.

i know that ichika and kohane had the majority of their angst material covered/resolved in the main story (kohane also had vbs wl2 so it's probably covered there too but i havent actually reaad it), but i think we as a fandom should dwell on what they were like and what they were experiencing back then more often fr 🗣️. i think this kind of angst allows exploration of certain character aspects that are usually left forgotten or undiscussed. (bro ichikas closest friends left her with no real explanation so she she thought it was her fault and was extremely lonely because of it man can we talk about that please 😭)

minori is another example. i know mmjs overall story and her themes especially revolve around hope and not giving up, but c'mon she had her auditions rejected 50 times and she still kept going strong. that takes some serious passion, determination, and willpower, and i feel like that should be acknowledged more often because if i was rejected like that for at most 10 times i would have straight up folded and given up. minoris first focus and airis first focus both have a lot of minori struggle that i just never see talked about?? (read: "sorry we're not hiring your team because of that faceless amateur. we'll hire everyone else individually if you kick her out though 😁) its just a shame because its so important to her character and the angst potential is crazy!! (ok im sorry lmao)

shizuku also has a lot of angst material in early game (main story argument with airi, masking perfection, the entire thing with her old group in general) that i was really surprised wasnt featured in like...those angsty tiktoks and fanfics LMAO. i did end up finding some for her but the roots of the angst were mostly fanmade and not completely applicable to her character. i personally don't have any issues with making up tragic backstories/angst material for characters (in fact i love to see it and actively do it myself) but like the canon material is right there, there's a lot to work with already it doesnt have to be completely fanon lol /nm /lh

i know the rest of leo/need is probably also lacking in good angst content, but honami and shiho already got a ramble from me so they're on standby for now smh /lh. (airi and haruka might also be lacking but iirc airis the most popular mmj character and the recent haruka events have some good angst coverage so idk about their current standings). saki has a weird situation where her angst content definitely isnt lacking but most of the time its only used to fuel tsukasa angst. i don't actually think theres anything wrong with that because so much of his motivations were initially based off of her (wanting to be a star and making other people smile), but once it becomes only about him and has nothing to do with her, who is actually the one suffering, i just dont feel like it's used fairly. angstkasa is wonderful and all but saki is her own character :[

anyway sorry that was kind of an incoherent rant about my favorite characters, but i really enjoy angst and would absoultely love to see more depictions of it for the blorbos. thank you for reading o7

VBS rocking up to the shinonome household only to find n25 in various stages of grief after watching a movie where a dog dies. (something like Hachiko that movie fucking destroyed me). states of grief include mafuyu sitting at the dining table looking relatively normal to mizuki laying on the floor with their head in their hands.

haruka having the absolute wildest compilation video titles compared to the rest of MMJ. airi’s favorite example is “haruka has vaguely questionable reactions to other idols for 7 minutes.” shizuku likes likes the “haruka holding various penguin memorabilia for 8 minutes straight!” video.

in the same vein as tsukasa rocking shiho’s shit w a door from my last post, tsukasa has crushed the fingers of at least 12 other students flinging doors open and closed. how saki has gone uninjured via tsukasa her entire life is beyond everyone around her.

honami casually striking up conversation with kanade when they see each other in public for the first time. n25 is astounded kanade is having human interaction with someone who isn’t them; l/n is concerned as to why honami is talking to a girl who looks like she’s never seen the sun.

mizuki livetweeting (or whatever sekai equivalent) mafuyu’s reaction to literally everything. “guys she’s tryin caramel ice cream for the first time” at 12:41 PM, quickly followed by “SHE HATES IT” at 12:42 PM, which is also followed by “nvm she liked it false alarm” at 12:44 PM. this is also applicable to a call or facetime.

minori once threw a pudding cup at airi so hard it left a mark for three days. she claims it was an accident; airi believes otherwise.

Chose flower meanings. Reasons for each one under the cut. The PSDs were made to match the flag, which were made based on colors of the flowers (because the original flags repeated the same color palettes and just put the flower on top).

Flags: Bluebellian (Ichika), zinnian (Saki), cireraean (Honami), irisian (Shiho), dandelinian (Minori), dahliaic (Haruka), daffodilian (Airi), lotusean (Shizuku), magnolic (Kohane), chrysanthean (An), sunfleurian (Akito), daisyan (Toya), peonian (Tsukasa), poppyic (Emu), hibiscian (Nene), lavendrian (Rui), hyacinthian (Kanade), pansyean (Mafuyu), marigoldian (Ena), and roseian (Mizuki)

Flower choices (usually when I say "and more," it means there's a negative connotation or one that isn't applicable):

Ichika: Bluebell, meaning loyalty, constancy, humility, and gratitude. Seems self-explanatory.

Saki: Zinnia, meaning thinking of you, remembering absent friends, and sentimentality. Considering Saki's return is what brought Leo/need back together, I thought it fit.

Honami: Cherry blossom, meaning (in Japanese flower language) transience of life, gentleness, and kindness. Seems self-explanatory.

Shiho: Iris, meaning (in general) eloquence, good news, light, faith, valor, wisdom, friendship, and a message. Shiho has (as of 20 November 2024) had two focus events featuring faith in the title, and Leo/need in general is about friendship. Also, White Day knight Shiho card (the 3* from the first set) gives me the valor vibes.

Minori: Dandelion, meaning overcoming hardship, faithfulness, happiness, and more. Minori is basically the poster child for overcoming hardship, given her struggles to become an idol.

Haruka: Dahlia, meaning elegance and dignity, among other things. Seems self-explanatory.

Airi: Daffodil, meaning regard, respect, self-love, and more. A bit more of a stretch, but the respect stood out to me.

Shizuku: Lotus, meaning purity, chastity and elegance, and more. Seems self-explanatory.

Kohane: Magnolia, meaning perseverance, love of nature, and nobility. Following Light Up the Fire, it was a Kohane event that showed Vivid BAD SQUAD persevering in their goal to surpass RAD WEEKEND. And then it was a Kohane event where they did that.

An: Chrysanthemum, meaning (in general) fidelity, optimism, joy and long life, "you're a wonderful friend," rest, and cheerfulness. I saw this and immediately thought Anhane (platonic but could be romantic too). I know she has a sunflower association already, but I used that for...

Akito: Sunflower, meaning adoration, pride, and more. Immediate Akito vibes from this.

Toya: Daisy, meaning (in general) loyal love, gentleness, innocence, purity, fidelity, patient endurance, and more. Tell me this isn't Toya, especially towards VBS and the Tenmas.

Tsukasa: Peony, meaning (in Japanese flower language) masculinity and bravery. I think it fits the new card, okay?

Emu: Poppy, meaning sleep, imagination, fantastic extravagance, and more. Ignoring all the negative connotations that were there, I got wonderhoy vibes.

Nene: Hibiscus, meaning delicate beauty. Nene was hard to come up with one for, so I went with something a bit generic.

Rui: Lavender, meaning love, devotion, and loyalty, among others. Leo/need can't be the only one getting loyalty meanings, alright? He's loyal to WxS and is deeply devoted to them.

Kanade: Hyacinth, meaning (for blue and purple) constancy, grief and sorrow, and, "Please forgive me." Seems self-explanatory given her father.

Mafuyu: Pansy, meaning thoughtfulness, merriment, remembrance, you occupy my thoughts, and, "Think of me." Mafuyu was another difficult one to come up with for, but I do think Kanade (and the rest of Niigo) occupies Mafuyu's thoughts, and Mafuyu can be thoughtful.

Ena: Marigold, meaning pain and grief, jealousy, and more. I know Ena has an association with daffodils, but this screamed Ena between her issues with art, her jealousy towards Mafuyu, and more recently with Where Does the Path of Thorns Go?

Mizuki: Rose, meaning (in general) love, silence, privacy, and conversations held in confidence. I mean... Where Does the Path of Thorns Go? Enough said, I think.

I think it’s funny that in the MMJ/WxS sekais everyone is employed, and in the VBS sekai almost everyone is employed (I guess you could count rin/len as apprentices), and in the L/N sekai they’re students, but in the niigo sekai everyone is unemployed. Maybe they couldn’t afford to buy shoes maybe that’s what’s happening. “It’s called the empty sekai for a reason what job would they even have” that’s not my problem. they need to get on indeed.com and start sending in those applications.

the way i only JUST realized that in An's "The Overflowing Feelings" card behind her isn't An's reflection no that is NAGI.....

and im pretty sure there is a bunch more symbolism in it because like. i think nagi is wearing a hospital gown in that card instead of her regular clothes but it is kinda hard to tell

sometimes i see an ask and think "i could make this so much worse" and this is one of those times.

that's not a reflection, that is straight up ghost Nagi. if you notice the grunge texture is actually overlaid over the entire illustration, not just behind the fence. it's not a mirror, it's a fence that separates the living (an) and the dead (nagi). i also like how everything except Nagi on the dead side is blurry even the plants that are right next to her. i can't give an actual explanation because annoyingly this set didn't get a blog post, but my personal interpretation of this is that it's meant to show how Nagi is still close to An even after she's gone (personally I like to connect it to An carrying her memory of Nagi in her heart becase she's clutching her shirt over her heart, but i think you could interpret it as Nagi watching over An from the spirit world too if you want).

i think it could be a hospital gown based on general appearance and the way it ties at the back, but as you said it's hard to tell. it would make some sense though since she died in hospital. but it could just be a generic black dress, since it doesn't look like the hospital clothes she wore in the story. also if you look closely you'll notice her lineart is in a white-grey color which makes her look more ghostly than An.

Also notice how all the other pillars have the red flowers on them (the ones from the gekokujo jacket). I believe these are gerberas, which are sometimes used as funeral flowers. i.e the flowers placed on the other pillars are to say goodbye, but she's actually right there with An.

contrast with An's card from Vivid Old Tale. y'know, the one all about her relationship with Nagi and the first time they actually implied that Nagi's dead (they subtly hint at it in BFBY but it was far more obvious in VOT).

This set actually did get a blog post so I can go on about the symbolism. The cards in this set were based on the theme of "warmth and nostalgia", which heavily connects to the event being about An looking back at her childhood and time spent with Nagi, and how much she loves her home.

Sunflowers obviously tie in to that warmth, but they also symbolise positivity, happiness, and hope (the color yellow does as well). These connect with both her dreams in the present and memories of the past.

Also this part of the interview:

The people she loves have seen her grow up and smile compared to when she was a kid and crying after running away. Now while people she loves who have watched her grow up could be her mom or dad, or even Taiga, considering the untrained card...

The person she's smiling at is Nagi.

And that's what makes the LUTF set so fucked up because just LOOK there's so much contrast between them. Sunflowers representing VBS' hope compared to the despair in the LUTF set caused by their defeat to Taiga. The bright colors next to greyscale (and red, which has several different connotations multiple of which are applicable here), how cold the LUTF set is next to the VOT set. An holding flowers in both but in one they're flowers symbolising joy and in one they're flowers symbolising grief. The VOT set is youthful and lively but in the LUTF set everyone is angry, despairing and grieving a life lost.

The fact that the POV in An's VOT card is probably Nagi watching her all grown up (which she never got to do in reality) vs Nagi being dead and separated from An in her LUTF card, not to mention that Nagi is not watching her anymore but instead facing away because she's left An behind (but was she ever really with An in the VOT card in the first place?). An crying in both untraineds but in one she's being comforted by Nagi and in one she's crying because Nagi is gone.

In some ways it's like the VOT set is An's idealistic look at what life will be like when Nagi gets home and the LUTF set is An coming to terms with the reality.

Ok well, Lance Harbor is the starring quarterback of a small town in texas that idolizes football, to the point where they keep seniors back a few years to bulk them up for uni applications. He's a major hometown hero, like there are fully billboards of his face up, he's that important to the town ecosystem. Well loved, perfect player, but hiding severe knee injuries that actually end up ruining his chances of a football career, despite being the most promising. In the final game of his team's senior year he settles into being a coach who cares about the players, coming to terms with the fact that he may never leave this town but this is how he can make his impact.

He's charming, charismatic, everybody loves him. He's shown to like the idea of public sex/semi-public sex, goes to a strip club with his boys, and has an adorable southern accent. I just know he likes it dirty ok, I just know he can talk his pretty little cheerleader girlfriend into letting him fuck her ass, or suck his dick in his car out by the fields. He's your perfect all American boy and I need him so bad 😭

Something to note about VB is it's about dismantling this idea of the ideal american youth by showing the problems these kids were facing in this small town. So while his relationship to his girlfriend seems very sweet and clean cut, she's actually with him because she knows he's the starring quarter back and has already received scholarships to good universities. He was her ticket out, so there might be something to play with in the fact that he may or may not know this relationship is transactional. When lance loses his scholarships because of his Injuries she tries to fuck his best friend who's become the new starring quarterback, and then breaks down about loser her ride too, and no one understanding.

He's just so clean cut, so pretty, so all-American, and because he isn't one of the main characters we don't really get to dive into the nitty gritty of his development. I wanna muddy him up, I wanna know how he fucks, I wanna figure out what makes this guy tick. I just keep spinning him in my head because he looks pretty.
