toya and snowglobes

one of the things that stuck out to me in mirai's 2DMV is the heavy use of snow globes.

snow globes, are an ornament filled with snow, they are an encapsulation of our memories through a glass dome. they essentially are a representation of “permanance” — the snow inside would never melt, and the images inside would never fade. they are a constant.

what does this mean for toya? in the event, we find out that toya doesn’t have much life experiences in this world. a lot of the things vbs has done before, are his "firsts". more importantly, we find out that toya loves and holds all those "firsts" deeply in his heart, like how he wants kohane to send him the photos she took for keepsake. he no longer is a bystander, keeping a distance from everything. instead he is surrounded by all of these fun experiences he can reminisce for the rest of his life.

snowglobes resembling the idea of "permanence", means they are often "proof" of an experience. with many of toya's "firsts" being with vbs, he never ever wants to let go of those colorful and loving memories with them. he's in the snowglobe together with them, because it is a memory of his happiest self, where he feels at home. he isn't just experiencing those memories unfold from the outside, he is experiencing those memories from within, with him as the center.

snowglobes essentially, are the embodiment of all of toya's happy memories. this links to the lyrics, "finally, i found a place where we can all laugh."

so even in the worst snowstorms where he feels alone, where the snow shakes up, eventually, the snow still settles down to show vbs surrounding him — the idea that toya isn't and will never be alone. vbs is the one constant in toya's life, no matter what happens.

he has the most vibrant, most colorful snowglobe, because what matters to him most is the experience. not just for himself, but to experience all these new things together with the people who he holds dearly in his heart, to share his happiness and joy when he discovers all the world has to offer for him, and when he successfully does something he has never done before for the very first time.

there's so much love and gratitude, that words cannot describe. that’s really the beauty of toya and snow globes.
