"We're never going to get out of here by tomorrow." She complains, looking out the window where the snow is already probably half a foot high, and it's not forecasted to end any time soon.

Maybe the idea to use some of their remaining vacation time to retreat to a little cabin in the Vermont mountainside wasn't well thought out. Although it was almost Christmas break, apparently, it was too cold for serial killers to kill, so the BAU workload was light, and Hotch was more than willing to give them time off.

But the chance planes will be leaving, or even be able to land in DC if the cold snap had traveled south, is next to zero. By morning, they might be completely snowed in.

She turns back to look at her gorgeous boyfriend, who is snuggled under a blanket on the couch, tucked up like a burrito with a mug of tea on the table. "How are you not freaking out about this, Mr. Planner?"

"Doctor Planner." He jokes. "And I'm not freaking out because I like spending time with you here."

She smiles, stepping away from the window and to the couch where she sits next to him.

The inside of the cabin is cute yet luxurious, fitted with polished wood, a grand fireplace, and nice furniture. Most importantly, it's cozy, with one bedroom off the side of the open-planned kitchen and living room. The windows are impressive, floor-to-ceiling glass that shows the rows of pine trees covered in white snow. It's peaceful and quiet, and that's what they needed.

Spencer takes his arm out of the blanket and wraps it around her, pulling her closer. "I'm not worrying because, for once, I don't feel stressed." It's remarkable, really, since he's been stressed since he was five. "Who cares if we don't get home tomorrow or this week?" He asks rhetorically. "We've got food, power, a backup generator, and, this might be my bias, but good company."

She giggles, nuzzling further under his arm. "You're right."

"I always am." He reminds her. "Now get out of your coat and shoes, and come cuddle with me."

She obliges. It's warm enough with the fire on that she doesn't need anything more than sleep shorts and a hoodie of Spencer's. She hurries back to the couch where Spencer has set up snacks.

The news on the TV is on, a weather reporter talking about a snowstorm coming over the east coast. It's not good news. "Are you seeing this?" She asks Spencer, turning the volume up as she stands behind the couch to watch the show.

He nods, unphased as he pours more tea. "Let it snow, Y/n. Just let it snow." He instructs, taking the remote and turning the TV off.

Y/n huffs, sitting down next to him. He pulls her closer so they can both see out the wide windows at the settling sun and pink-painted sky.

"Don't you think it's so beautiful?" He asks. There's a soft wonder in his expression that's usually not there. She imagines it's what baby Spencer looked like opening his college textbooks at thirteen.

She places her fingers on his cheek while they both stare at the scenery. He hasn't shaved since they left, and it's a good look on him. "Not much snow growing up in Vegas, huh?" She asks.

"Maybe twice." He recalls, turning back to look at her. She leans forward to kiss him a couple of times, appreciating how warm he is to be around. "I don't mind it, though, because it makes me feel like a little kid now." He confesses. "Like I had encyclopedias when I was a kid and I still love learning facts, but it's not a novelty."

He could not be any cuter, all soft. It melts her heart completely. "You're adorable." She tells him, holding his cheek tighter when he tries to hide his blushing by turning away. "Stop. I'm your girlfriend, I'm allowed to say you're cute."

"Can we just lay here forever?" He wonders. "Stare at the bright stars, then watch the sun come up, see the snow falling all day, and look at the sunsets."

It does sound ideal. "We might need sleep, though." She reminds him.

Spencer's already thought of that. "We can do that here, too. I just want you to always be this close."

She leans forward to kiss him a few more times. "Sounds like a good plan." She agrees, pressing her cheek to his so they can both look out the window. "This is going to be my happy thought now." She admits. "You know when there's something horrific at work and you have to think of a good thing to balance it?"

Spencer can feel his happy thought changing as well. "What was it before?" He asks curiously.

"The first time you kissed me." She reveals.

He pulls back in shock. "God, really? That was horrible."

She shakes her head. Maybe he was sweating because of how nervous he was, and maybe his lips were only on hers for a short second and he had no idea what to do afterward, but it was them. "It was sweet."

"I'm just glad my Ph.Ds were a redeemable quality." He jokes.

She laughs with him. "Baby, everything about you is a redeemable quality, even though you don't have anything that needs to be redeemed."

"I really love you." He says softly.

"I really love you too." And she really doesn't hate unpredictable weather events anymore.

how dare you call him that mormon guy but I’ll ignore it because I love you. hunky dory is his mission. that’s one of the fun facts he said he found hunky dory at 19 and never went on a mission trip, so that was his mission. his parents met in a trailer park. he moved to a town with no stoplight when he was 9 but ran off back to vegas when he was 16 and got a fake id. his father was an alcoholic from a long line of alcoholics who his mom would take brandon with her to look for drunk in casinos but stopped drinking when he converted to mormonism (so there are layers here). he used to say he gets angry when he sees happy college students and he still gets a bit of an ache about it because it was never an option for him. he was a fat kid who got called a fag and felt completely out of place. andy of andy you’re a star fame is a real person he went to school with. he used to religiously read every morrissey and noel gallagher interview he could get his hands on. he stole morrissey demos from morrisseys guitarists bag when he was a bellhop. he kept the teacup morrissey drank out of when he came into the restaurant he worked at. he stalked morrissey for an entire night at a hotel while morrissey knew what he was doing the entire time. his first band was a synth pop band called blush response with a guy named trevor he met at a golf course job who he felt like was one of the first people he ever truly clicked with. they bonded over morrissey and depeche mode and the pet shop boys erasure etc they used to dye each others hair black. and when brandon was kicked out of the band and trevor moved to la with his girlfriend he almost drank himself to death. seeing don’t look back in anger at the hard rock in a show he only managed to get into at the last minute because someone handed him their ticket as they were leaving was what made him think he could really do it and that he wanted to be in a guitar band specifically. he hates any oasis song not written by noel. he made lou reed laugh by showing him that perfect day has the same chord progression as perfect day when they were recording tranquilize. he said every emo band needed to be beaten to death and never took pete wentz up on his offer to get sushi. his teeth were all falling out by the time he we like 26. he used to have to drink to get through every show. sam’s town is a real casino and he said it was like a beacon on the road from the trailer park where his parent were from that showed you were getting some place, you were getting to the city soon. he used to sleep on a morrissey pillowcase. he met his wife at a vegas thrift store and her cptsd has factored into his writing quite a lot. he almost fired that one annoying lorde producer that isn’t jack antonoff but almost as annoying 4 times while making the desired effect (I feel like you might appreciate this one idk why). he references a paul simon song in caution by the killers (another one for you). he’s notoriously tactless and mouthy and has tried to tone it down sometime after sam’s town because it became all that people could say about him (alt rock azealia banks) but it’s not really entirely worked (partially because a lot of that is just….him despite what he says so it hasn’t gone away but) it just got replaced with harping on the mormon thing despite him kind of being theologically all over the place with that in reality/seemingly clinging to it in name etc for a multitude of complicated reasons. he almost got an oasis tattoo as a teenager. he called hunky dory a working class album. uhhhhh I think he’s very interesting and a bundle of contradictions in the best way and funny and one of our last great frontmen who is also a great and varied songwriter. is that enough fun facts some of these aren’t fun. he’s been saving his beard trimmings in a plastic ziplock bag for years to give to neil tennant of pet shop boys fame.

The Ghost of Bugsy Siegel

One of the few original hotels and casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada that remains today is the Flamingo Hotel. This hotel has a very famous ghost residing in its Presidential Suite. At 10:30 P.M. on June 20, 1947 Benjamin Bugsy Siegel a well-known gangster was shot and killed at his girlfriend’s home in Beverly Hills, California.

Siegel rose from the poverty-ridden slums of Brooklyn, New York to become a famous racketeer. Ben as he liked to be called, was tall, charming, athletic and handsome. He had the gift of gab, was a sharp dresser and it was said his piercing blue eyes were fearless. From his early teens Siegel was a successful criminal.

Siegel was also the classic textbook sociopath. He took what he wanted without a thought for his victims. He was a master manipulator of people. He had a long history of robbery, rape and murder. His fellow criminals dubbed him Bugsy because he was known to take jobs others wouldn’t take. He became the mob’s most feared hit man. Bugsy is a fitting nickname because Siegel often would go bugs with anger if others crossed him.

Yet Siegel is not remembered for his crimes but for his flamboyant lifestyle, which included many mob connections and Hollywood friends. He is also remembered because he was one of the first to see the opportunity that Las Vegas, Nevada presented. Because of this his name is synonymous with gambling in Las Vegas. But it would be his association with this town that caused his death.

Siegel seeing Vegas’ potential convinced his mob and Hollywood friends to invest in a project that he assured them would result in quick profits. He started to build a hotel/casino called the Flamingo. The project turned into a money pit costing over 6 million dollars. This drained his mob friends treasury dry. To add insult to injury his mob friends back east, including Meyer Lansky, learned that Siegel was skimming money from the building budget and putting it in numbered Swiss bank accounts.

The mob decided to put a hit out on Siegel. Lansky, who was a close friend of Siegel because Bugsy had saved his neck on several occasions in the past convinced the Syndicate to hold off. He convinced them that the Flamingo was going to be a moneymaker therefore they could get their money back. At its first opening the Flamingo flopped but months later when Siegel reopened the hotel it was a success. But this did not save his life. To this day it is not known if the Syndicate fulfilled the hit contract they had out on Siegel or if other enemies had him killed. His murder was done mob style. The Syndicate did take over the Flamingo after Siegel’s death.

Las Vegas is no longer owned by the mob. The Hilton Corporation owns the Flamingo Hotel and Casino today. In 1997 the Flamingo celebrated its 50th anniversary. It is the fourth largest hotel in the world with more than 3,500 guest rooms. Siegel was not mentioned during the anniversary celebration. As one writer put it:

“…the lesson that the life of Benjamin Bugsy Siegel imparts on us: a killer with a good idea is, after all, just another bum.”

But the sightings of Siegel’s ghost indicate that he is pleased that his predictions for Las Vegas came true. Since his death, many witnesses have seen Siegel’s ghost at the Flamingo Hotel. For four years before his death in Beverly Hills, Bugsy lived in the Presidential Suite at the Flamingo. Guests that have stayed in this room have reported many strange encounters.

Moving cold spots are reported and objects vanish or are moved around the suite. Witnesses have seen his apparition in the bathroom and near the suite’s pool table. It is reported that he appears to be happy and content to still be present. Some witnesses state he looks to be pleased about something. Maybe he is happy that Las Vegas turned out how he envisioned it.

Whether they replace the weasels as the Slasher Villains or they are Las Vegas' group of killers? How much different do you think they and their relationships would be (not just with each other but other people, like Maya and Kingstons parents)? What kind of irl slashers would you compare them to?

If they are slashers alongside the weasels... Ohhh boy Shiny, Poppy, and Lottie are in for a shit show when they get on the road, I imagine.

Slasher!Rena is Freddy down to a T. She's an orphan, she's a Huge Tease, she's terrifyingly cunning, and she'd absolutely come back for her daughter just to use her when she needs her. So Rena's basically herself, but with a taste for bloodshed. As opposed to King and Ryan, Rena probably always had a little bloodlust in her, from childhood; I can see her being bullied when she was little (she was a lanky, awkward thing who looked just like her brother- they called her a boy, boyish, masculine. As she grew up she became more and more the character we know- addicted to drama. Except its even worse, because... well, she's not satisfied with a little sex. Yes, thats great, but she starts to think that if she can kill... and then go to the funeral, too,... t h a t would be perfect. And of course, she targets kids she grew up with and their families. (And at this point, she's the most popular woman in the little australian farm town. She knows everyone, she's friends with everyone- So she has access, to everyone.)

After they move to Vegas, america's capital of bad mistakes, Rena really hits her perfect stride. Everyone there is her puppet.

(And *cough* I have this thought where, after Poppy/Shiny/and Lottie come to Vegas and meet the Roo's, and Lottie naively thinks she's finally found a parent who wants her (Rena's spinning it like Smartass took her and hid her from her mother- which we both know is nothing but lies), Rena digs into her daughter. She finds out everything that happened, convincing Lottie with gentle motherly touches and warm openness to tell her all her secrets. Then, for fun, Rena sells Lottie out to Greasy)

Slasher!Kingston is Chucky for sure XD Oh! And also Foxy and Stu!! Kingston still seems to think pretty clearly (Unlike, say, Otis or Baby. Or Tiffany. Or Billy.), he k n o w s the difference between right and wrong, he can explain ethics, but he just doesn't care ('wrong's the fun one'). Kingston basically started developing a bloodlust after Rena started killing. He was always pretty popular in school (AFL star) and in town; he was never bullied, but he's always up for trying something new! King's a bit of a thrill seeker (He drove before he had a licence way over the speed limit, he drank before it was legal, he smoked, he did drugs, he was up for really any dangerous stunt, etc), so when he stumbles upon his girlfriend with blood on her pretty face and his old football coach laying still on the ground, he's basically like... 'oh is this what we're doing now?? Well- shit- I'm down! Whadawe do with this??' *gesturing to the body of the man who kindly taught him football all through highschool* Who's next??'

And its not personal for him at all like it is with Rena, he'll kill anyone. Doesn't matter. He has very little in the way of empathy.

King just jumps on board immediately- following Rena's lead but quickly ~flourishing~ on his own. And, being a thrill seeker, he almost blows their cover so so many times! Rena gets so annoyed 😅 She has tied him to a chair with military grade knots through the night before on multiple occasions because they need to lay low now goddamnit!

As for his parents... he would absolutely kill them, no guilt no shame. He doesn't want to, he's not gonna go out of his way to do it (They're his mum and dad! He loves them, in his way), but if they found out about his extracurriculars and they started creating problems then he will shoot them in the heads.

Slasher!Ryan, true to his character, was never a really cruel person (Just complicit)... until Maya** was killed. So, I'd liken him to... maybe... Needy? From Jennifer's Body? After Jennifer and Chip were killed, she lost a l l semblance of being the 'good guy'. She went basically monotone, and just... pissed. And thats definitely Ryan (In the original universe too, but its definitely more violent in this one). Ryan definitely also has a mindless, wrathful Michael Myers thing about him.

He wants to destroy whoever did it, whoever took Maya away. But once its done... he still doesn't feel better. Ryan will never feel better. He's lost something very important inside him, he doesn't care anymore, and it will not ever go back to the way it was. He's like a mindless soldier for King and Rena to use as they will. (To their credit- they do try not to treat him that way though. Thats their brother, who's been with them no matter what since the start, and... they love him. He's their soft spot!! But sometimes they have to use him.)

Ryan goes into dissociative states where he will hurt anyone near him, and King has to hold him back (Which is a struggle- Ryan's stronger then any of them) while Rena forces a pill down his throat; covering his mouth until it goes down and he goes to sleep.

** Maya did not know about Kings and Rena's killings when she was alive. Ryan kept it from her, and though King made some odd jokes sometimes around her, and she might have had some suspicions... she never outright found out.

The Kolchak Report :The Night Stalker 1972

Welcome to the Kolchak Report where I am gonna review every episode of Kolchak the Night Stalker,but before I do that Im going to talk about the two TV movies that lead to the series ,starting with 1972's The Night Stalker

Hasbeen investigative reporter Carl Kolchek (DArren McGavin ) is investigating A mad killer known as Janos Skorzeny(Barry Atwater ) is going around draining women of blood in Las Vegas ,when he starts to realize theymight be dealing with an actual vampire

SO in the 70's the vampire started being seen as a kind of a quaint idea ,so a few writers thought "What if a vampire attacked in modern times",so we got stuff like Salems Lot and Blacula but I think the best of them is Night Stalker .Its a pretty realistic take on a vampire .Like all the tropes are there(The crosses,the stakes,the fangs) but the feel is very much that this is a murder mystery/thriller where the villain happens to be a vampire ,and that groundedness makes it legit spooky .Barry Atwater is legit chilling ,with an imposing physical presence and acts more like a cornered animal then a person .However he isnt the main focus,the focus is on the utter denile by the police and politicians to admit there is a real vampire going around

Cast is solid including Ralph Meeker as the token buddy of Kolchak ,Claude Akins as the bullheaded sheriff ,CArol Lynley as Kolchaks girlfriend,and the always awesome Simon Oakland as Kolchaks boss Tony Vincenzo,who would go on to be the main supporting character for Kolchak going forward

The standout however is Kolchak himself played by the great Darren McGavin.....Im gonna see if I keep thios thought to the end of the series,but Kolchak maybe one of my favorite horror heroes .Hes an obnoxious blowhardt but he belives in the truth ,and as a newsman his job is to lay out all the facts,no matter how absurd they maybe and who doesnt want them said .When the supernatural is staring him in the face ,he rolls with it and has to do what it takes to take it on

This is a great TV horror movie ,and a perfect watch around Halloween time .The film has a clear ending so if you wanna watch it as a stand alone,you can find it on youtube

THE ROOKIE REACTION

Today's reaction is to the season 5, season opening episode titled "Double Down" which originally aired on September 25, 2022. The episode was written by Alexi Hawley and directed by Tori Garrett. Spoilers ahead!

The Rookie is one of those shows I was introduced to during the height of the pandemic. I've always been a huge fan of Nathan Fillion. I find him very charming and an unconventional leading man. As our titular rookie, John Nolan, Nathan has never been more charming. Or unconventional. I got hooked immediately and have stuck around for the last four seasons - even though they got rid of two of my favorite characters. Justice for Talia Bishop and Jackson West!

Anywho, it's September which means all of my favorite shows are back! In our season opener, we pick up where we left off at the end of the previous season. I do wish I'd watched the final episode of season four just so I was better prepared for this episode but allow me to catch you all up. In the season four closer "Day in the Hole", Nolan is sent to a border town called Frontera where he comes into conflict with a violent gang. Tim Bradford goes undercover as Jake Butler who just so happens to look exactly like him. Chen gets roped into being Jake's girlfriend during the mission and let me tell you, the sexual chemistry between the two of them is so THICC. They share a kiss and, ladies and gentleman, we officially have Chenford!

Fast-forward back to Sunday's season five premiere, Nolan was reinstated to his old department by the Chief and is given a golden ticket which means he gets to choose any assignment in the LAPD. His main squeeze, Bailey (ugh, she's still here) suggests he can go work with the K-9 unit because he would get the job but Nolan is clearly not about to abandon his ultimate goal which is to become a training officer. Meanwhile, to put a damper on things, Nolan and the rest of the squad are informed that infamous serial killer, Rosalind Dyer, is due in court for a new trial and needs to be transferred from her prison to the courtroom. The entire area surrounding the courthouse is placed on lockdown and everyone in law enforcement is enlisted to aid with the transfer, including Nolan. 

I'm not going to lie - even though 9-1-1 did something similar for their season five premiere last year (exchange a serial rapist for a serial killer and you pretty much have the same plot), I found the scene where Rosalind is led out of her cell and the process of getting her to the courthouse so thrilling. I knew something bad was about to happen but admittedly I didn't see her lawyer being in on her escape. What frustrated me most about Rosalind getting away is that it felt like everyone involved in the transfer dropped the ball. Rosalind Dyer is playing chess and the entire LAPD is playing Connect Four. 

With Rosalind on the loose in Los Angeles and three people (a cop and the parents of the crazy lawyer accomplice), everyone, with the exception of Brandford and Chen (more on them later) meet up at the station for safety reasons. Even Bailey, Sergeant Gray's wife, Tamara, and Wesley are there. I kept thinking that Rosalind would come after Tamara because she is the closest to Chen who is one of Rosaliind's victims, by proxy, but the flip is script when at the end of the episode we see that she has gotten to Chen's current boyfriend, Chris. When we last see Chris, both his wrists appear to be slit and he is breathing profusely. However, it is confirmed he is still alive. Will Chris survive? Hopefully we find out next episode. 

Now let's talk about our newly-minted The Rookie pairing. This show has been teasing Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen hooking up for seasons and now that we finally have it, I'm still in somewhat disbelief. With everything going to shit back in Los Angeles, Bradford and Chen go back undercover as Jake Butler and his girlfriend to infiltrate a drug lord named Madras who is rumored to be hiding out in Las Vegas. Thorsen helps them charter a plane so that they and some hired guns can make the trip to Sin City. Chen learns of Rosalind Dyer's escape while in the air and Bradford takes her to the plane's lavatory so they can talk it out. They pretend to hook up and to make it convincing to the others, Chen kisses Bradford.

When they arrive in Vegas, they head to a casino where Bradford is immediately recognized by Jake's former girlfriend. Chen deescalates the situation before their cover is blown and the two rendezvous with Lopez and Thorsen to get more intel on Madras. When Bradford and Chen arrive at their shared hotel room, Bradford gets a call from Lopez and learns that the operation to extract Madras has been initiated and that he and Chen can return to LA. As the phone call ends, there is a knock at the door. Bradford sees that it's Jake's ex-girlfriend and when he opens the door he is bombrushed by the three men whom he and Chen are working with. They easily dispatch Bradford and tie him up but Quickdraw McGraw Chen manages to take down all three men and save her man.

The two return to Los Angeles and everyone, including the FBI, seem convinced that Rosalind has headed for the border. Chen and Bradford feel conflicted about their feelings for each other, mostly because they are currently in relationships with other people, but when Chen invites him inside, Bradford cannot resist. Yes, these two are finally making moves to get together. And just when I was starting to also feel conflicted about them cheating on their respective partners, Chen discovers her lawyer boyfriend, Chris, sitting in her apartment with his wrists slit. I feel so bad for writing this but when I saw him, I assumed he was dead and my first thought was, well, that's one way to break him up with Lucy. But, alas, he is not dead so perhaps we will get to see Lucy breakup with him after he almost died. 

So, that was our first episode of season five and I'm so ready to see what happens next. Admittedly, of all the shows I currently watch - 9-1-1, Abbott Elementary, New Amsterdam - this season premier was the one I was least excited about. Don't get me wrong, I do still love the show but I've felt that over the last few seasons the show has forgotten its thesis statement. I miss the days of seeing John Nolan make it as a rookie and now every episode is like a mini-action movie. I do want to stress that the show is still entertaining. It's just ... different. With that said, I'm all for Rosalind being on the loose and wreaking havoc for our crew. I just hope they don't drag out the storyline for too long. Oh, and she definitely needs to die after they apprehend her. Especially since she's prone to creating followers. I'm also here for the Chenford romance. Of all the couples on the show, they have the most chemistry. No shade to Nathan and Jenna Dewan, but every time I see them interact as a couple, it makes me want to throw up in my mouth.

09•24•22 - Vegas Day 2

Every year we go to the iHeartRadio Daytime Stage, and every year we suffer haha. We forgot to bring our mini fans, so we Amazon Primed them to Lisa's the night before, and thank goodness for those. They save us.

We got to the festival a bit late, which kind of sucked because we were actually interested in the first performer - Lauren Spencer Smith. We had a hard time figuring out where to park, but decided to go back to Treasure Island and walk from there since that's what we did last year. It was a long, hot walk, and took longer than expected, which is why we were late. We could hear Lauren's last song from outside the gates, but that's not quite the same.

It was almost 100 degrees, and right off the bat we were dying. We really hate the Area 15 venue, because it's just an asphalt parking lot. It just reflects the heat back at you. There's hardly any shade, and nowhere to sit down. They need to find something more like Coachella, with grass and shade and all that.

But anyway, thank goodness for the little fans to blow on our sweat and cool us off. They were running on full blast nearly the whole time.

We stayed in the crowd for Ryan Hurd, Girl in Red (who reminded me so much of Heather Fuhr), Chloe, Avril Lavigne, Gayle, and Chase Rice before we took our first break, and it was a lot. We were sitting in the dirty parking lot between each set and getting disgusting haha, but our backs and feet needed a break.

Avril was literally the best thing ever. She sang so many of my favorites - Girlfriend, Bite Me, My Happy Ending, I'm With You, and Sk8er Boi. She had a killer punk princess outfit on, and sent big balloons off into the crowd. Her visuals were insane, and the whole thing was great. My 7-year old self would have been psyched. I only wish she'd done Complicated, and Love Sux. And maybe What the Hell. She has so many bangers. Now I want to go to a strictly Avril concert.

Gayle did her iconic ABCDEFU and Beach was thrilled.

During our break for a couple people that we didn't care to see, we got a cup of ice water, and found a patch of shade to sit in (albeit, still on the asphalt). It was so nice to have a break (although brayden was still complaining about the venue and he hated the asphalt hahah, it made us laugh).

Then we got back up for 5SOS, and they were SO GOOD as always. We've seen them at iHeart before, and they just bring the party. We saw Lauv, sat in the T-Mobile lounge (TURF!) during Latto, and then went back out for Willow - who looks just like her dad, and has such a powerful, strong voice. I was impressed.

Then we left before Big Time Rush came out, because we didn't care too much about them and we were tired, hot, and ready for dinner!

The walk back also felt SO LONG, but at least it had started to cool off.

We were so happy to be back to the car! We got dinner at Chili's, and it was life changing. I was so happy to wash my hands, and drink all kinds of beverages. And the food was so great. I love the relief of attending to basic needs after neglecting them all day.

Then we made a quick stop at the outlets, so I could get a new Kate Spade bag - that's the only place I ever want to get them since they're so much cheaper. They were on a great sale, and I'm so happy with it. We also found a dress for Beach to wear to brunch while we were shopping, so that was good.

Then we stopped to get drinks before going home to take such amazing showers, play pool, and get some much needed sleep!!

The Ghost of Bugsy Siegel

One of the few original hotels and casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada that remains today is the Flamingo Hotel. This hotel has a very famous ghost residing in its Presidential Suite. At 10:30 P.M. on June 20, 1947 Benjamin Bugsy Siegel a well-known gangster was shot and killed at his girlfriend’s home in Beverly Hills, California.

Siegel rose from the poverty-ridden slums of Brooklyn, New York to become a famous racketeer. Ben as he liked to be called, was tall, charming, athletic and handsome. He had the gift of gab, was a sharp dresser and it was said his piercing blue eyes were fearless. From his early teens Siegel was a successful criminal.

Siegel was also the classic textbook sociopath. He took what he wanted without a thought for his victims. He was a master manipulator of people. He had a long history of robbery, rape and murder. His fellow criminals dubbed him Bugsy because he was known to take jobs others wouldn’t take. He became the mob’s most feared hit man. Bugsy is a fitting nickname because Siegel often would go bugs with anger if others crossed him.

Yet Siegel is not remembered for his crimes but for his flamboyant lifestyle, which included many mob connections and Hollywood friends. He is also remembered because he was one of the first to see the opportunity that Las Vegas, Nevada presented. Because of this his name is synonymous with gambling in Las Vegas. But it would be his association with this town that caused his death.

Siegel seeing Vegas’ potential convinced his mob and Hollywood friends to invest in a project that he assured them would result in quick profits. He started to build a hotel/casino called the Flamingo. The project turned into a money pit costing over 6 million dollars. This drained his mob friends treasury dry. To add insult to injury his mob friends back east, including Meyer Lansky, learned that Siegel was skimming money from the building budget and putting it in numbered Swiss bank accounts.

The mob decided to put a hit out on Siegel. Lansky, who was a close friend of Siegel because Bugsy had saved his neck on several occasions in the past convinced the Syndicate to hold off. He convinced them that the Flamingo was going to be a moneymaker therefore they could get their money back. At its first opening the Flamingo flopped but months later when Siegel reopened the hotel it was a success. But this did not save his life. To this day it is not known if the Syndicate fulfilled the hit contract they had out on Siegel or if other enemies had him killed. His murder was done mob style. The Syndicate did take over the Flamingo after Siegel’s death.

Las Vegas is no longer owned by the mob. The Hilton Corporation owns the Flamingo Hotel and Casino today. In 1997 the Flamingo celebrated its 50th anniversary. It is the fourth largest hotel in the world with more than 3,500 guest rooms. Siegel was not mentioned during the anniversary celebration. As one writer put it:

“…the lesson that the life of Benjamin Bugsy Siegel imparts on us: a killer with a good idea is, after all, just another bum.”

But the sightings of Siegel’s ghost indicate that he is pleased that his predictions for Las Vegas came true. Since his death, many witnesses have seen Siegel’s ghost at the Flamingo Hotel. For four years before his death in Beverly Hills, Bugsy lived in the Presidential Suite at the Flamingo. Guests that have stayed in this room have reported many strange encounters.

Moving cold spots are reported and objects vanish or are moved around the suite. Witnesses have seen his apparition in the bathroom and near the suite’s pool table. It is reported that he appears to be happy and content to still be present. Some witnesses state he looks to be pleased about something. Maybe he is happy that Las Vegas turned out how he envisioned it.
