Siedow was the only returning cast member‚ with his role developed and character expanded‚ and he's truly brilliant#as the weirdly endearing cannibal cook among this dysfunctional serial killing family; Moseley's whole performance is a delight too‚#a high energy‚ constantly chattering bit of dangerous clownery that's the perfect balance to the (newly childlike and sensitive) Leatherface#Williams is great‚ one of the all time final girls‚ while getting Hopper (right at the beginning of his career revival after several years#in the critical wilderness) was a huge boon: he gives everything to this bizarre‚ ridiculous role. where the og film was actually#surprisingly discreet in its onscreen violence‚ relying more on the building of unbearable tension and uncomfortable editing#this film is a gory mess from the very outset‚ and it does feel at times like Hooper is challenging the viewer after the response to TCM

ooc: Woke up with So Many Thoughts on the Fifteenth Doctor… and I am TRULY at war with myself about whether or not I wanna wade into fandom discourse…

But WOW, what a fascinating and beautiful knot the production team has created for themselves…
#ooc#the long and short of it is essentially… I saw someone complaining about how RTD still writes The Doctor as if he’s white#and… controversially perhaps… I think that’s correct#because uh. as a black person myself… I’m quite confident in saying that Becoming Black and stepping into that as part of who you are#does NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT.#it takes some people their whole lives to step into that#and The Doctor has been white for EONS#a white MAN for most of that#I quite liked Dot and Bubble especially at the end watching him have to grapple with ‘oh. things are Different.’#it stung to watch. in a way a LOT of DW stings now that does make me feel… unsafe and uncared for as a viewer of color#but unlike when they did the Rosa Parks episode THIS felt deeply necessary#and honestly… I HOPE The Doctor was thinking back to how they acted during that episode. what they put their companions through.#how thoroughly and completely 13 failed to protect them in a way no previous doctor had.#and now… standing on the other side of it..#and maybe getting that little flicker of clarity. of… this is WHY we protect them. besides just being decent.#i think it’s gonna be healthy for the doctor to get some hard fucking lessons in this regeneration. to act like he always has and have it#just Hit Different. and then he has to carry that forward. THAT’S the real challenge.#I don’t want a doctor who Acts Black. that’s offensive.#I want a doctor who lives through something that mirrors my experience and pulls hope and joy out of that#someone who carries that awareness and uses it to make a difference the way The Doctor is supposed to#I don’t think that defeats the purpose. I think that IS the purpose#he’s never BEEN an iteration of The Doctor that looks or is received like this. Same as when he was a woman.#he’s having his eyes opened to old patterns and ingrained. and that’s so SO NECESSARY.#if this show is going to carry on another sixty plus years he has to see who he’s been and what he’s been privileged to…#and then carry on pushing back even harder with love and empathy and everything he’s learned and gained and become#he has to be an accumulation as much as an individual. otherwise… the hope he brings is only for Some People not everyone#there are gonna be stumbles… but I think that’s actually great#… I said I wasn’t gonna go off. but at least I did it in the comments where the trolls can’t find me

i'm currently working on a text-based python bfdi simulator using stats and probability: i don't know how it'll turn out but i'm excited to try my best!
#melonposting#the idea is that a character's stats affect how likely they are to succeed in challenges and interpersonal interactions#where successes and failures affect each character's 'popularity' and thus how many votes they get for elimination#so i have to decide on each character's stats as well as which stats would be helpful in each challenge#and of course i have to code the framework for all of this. the relationship aspect is going to be the most complicated i think#because a character's relationship with another depends on the following:#if one hasn't met the other their impression of them increases or decreases when that other instigates positive or negative interactions#an interaction between characters causes them to meet if they hadn't already#and the outcome of the interaction (positive or negative) depends on the existing relationship:#what's their impression of one another? are they in the same team or alliance? do they like/dislike each other already?#and trait stats like kindness and calmness affect how likely a character is to offend or be offended#each character's positive/negative interactions as well as their helpfulness score (helpfulness in the current challenge)#affect their fan score - which is how much the 'viewers' like them#in addition positive relationships would give some sort of stat boost to both characters in challenges#and that all increases or decreases the character's PAL (personal amiability level) score#which in turn affects the PAL - the level of their relationship (enemy/adversary/annoyance/acquaintance/friend/best friend/soulmate)#i think it'd be cool if the characters could have unbalanced relationships and interactions#where one sees them as friends while the other sees them as enemies. y'know?#but that would complicate it even more#in any event i have lots of cool ideas for this :D yay

#funny games#1997#austrian cinema#horror imagery#blood tw#michael haneke#susanne lothar#ulrich mühe#arno frisch#frank giering#stefan clapczynski#doris kunstmann#christoph bantzer#wolfgang glück#susanne meneghel#monika von zallinger#although it's been on my to watch list for a long long time‚ this is also exactly the kind of film that I'd never take any particular#effort towards finding‚ content to spend years saying 'oh yeah i really should watch that'. so I'm most grateful to @bimbobussy for taking#the initiative and providing me with a copy; years and years of interest in film and in horror have meant that i was more than familiar#with the plot‚ the layout‚ the fourth wall breaks‚ and that might have been something subconsciously putting me off getting round to this#but im really glad i did. what an experience. my prior knowledge didn't feel like a hinderence; instead it leant an awful expectation to#the earlier scenes‚ allowed for dreadful recognition of what was coming. and i still got played! the misdirection with the knife‚ dropped#in an early scene‚ the planting of a seed of an idea that's there just to be subverted‚ a blackly comic bit of sleight of hand.#Haneke fills the film with such subversions: it's in the 4th wall breaks‚ the first of which is brief and subtle enough to go nearly#unnoticed‚ but which build in defiance of audience expectation to become outright challenges to the viewer‚ a kind of accusation of#complicity in the horrors unfolding; and then again‚ those horrors: Haneke actually keeps most of the violence offscreen and for all its#reputation for shocking horror‚ you actually see very little; except for the aftermath of that violence‚ which we do see‚ which we're left#to sit with for an uncomfortably long time‚ another accusation perhaps‚ or simply acknowledgement that the worst can sometimes be for those#left behind‚ the witnesses and the mourners. something very like genius at work here‚ a troubling masterpiece on violence and its impact

sometimes i think about how all my formative niche fandoms have, one by one, been adapted into huge tv series that majorly departed from the source material and suddenly catapulted the story into the mainstream (and generated mountains of discourse) - first sherlock holmes, then good omens, and then fuckin vc of all the things 😂 like an extremely particular low-level curse
