"SHE WAS MADE FOR VIOLENCE! Trained to be an assassin since birth, Kwannon chose to be an X-Man. But there are still some jobs too dirty for the X-Men. And some paths have to be walked alone. When the mission is brutal, Psylocke unsheathes her blades to punish those who prey on mutants. Psylocke ongoing with an Asian writer is pretty exciting
Psylocke (2024) will be written by Alyssa Wong and illustrated by Vincenzo Carratù. #1 will be in stores this November.
I'm looking forward to it. This and Storm are the honestly only new X-Men titles that I have any real interest in. Kanon's emancipation and growth into a fully-fledged, independent character with her own world and her own stories is truly one of the only good, lasting things to come out of Krakoa, and I'm very happy that they're not letting her fall by the wayside in this new era.
I haven't read all of Wong's work, but everything I have read, I've enjoyed-- they even managed to keep me interested in Deadpool, and as much as I have criticized the overall premise, I think that Captain Marvel has been consistently engaging. Wong has a vivid imagination, their original characters feel fresh and exciting, and I feel like they have a tendency towards magic and fantasy elements which obviously suits my taste.
I don't like pinning the responsibility to "fix" characters like Kanon onto authors of color, and to my knowledge, Wong isn't Japanese, but I am hoping that this book will finally bring some authenticity to the character and deconstruct or repair some of the orientalist tropes that I think are still haunting her. There's been a really exciting trend towards better, or at least more mindful representation of characters of color, particularly when it comes to how they're drawn or named-- little details that I do think make a difference. I do think that Psylocke would benefit from some intentional care in this regard, so I'm definitely glad that her first solo series will be written by an Asian American author.

Psylocke is Getting a Solo Comic Series
Tumblr media
Announced during San Diego Comic Con 2024, Psylocke is getting her own solo comic book series. Psylocke will be written by Alyssa Wong and illustrated by Vincenzo Carratù.
Psylocke will tie into Jed Mackay and Ryan Stegman's current X-Men run where Psylocke is a member of Cyclops' X-Men team. "But there are still some jobs too dirty for the X-Men. And some paths have to be walked alone.
When the mission is brutal, Psylocke unsheathes her blades to punish those who prey on mutants." (Marvel Comics) The comic will also feature appearances by Greycrow, shed light on Keannon's upbringing under the Hand, and introduce a new villain called the Taxonomist.
Psylocke #1 goes on sale on November 13, 2024. The first issue sports a main cover by Mahmud Asrar, a pink foil variant cover by Rickie Yagawa, a variant cover and virgin variant cover by Artgerm, and a variant cover by Hicham Habchi.
