“Pile out, you tramps. It’s the end of the line!”
“In this cage, you get tough, or you get killed.”
“Who’s the cute trick?”
“Kindly omit the flowers.”
“Keep it active. She’ll be back.”
Screenwriter Virginia Kellogg went behind bars to capture slang and elements of prison routine, and boy did it pay off. John Cromwell’s CAGED (1950, TCM, Plex) is a punchy good time, even when it’s hectoring the audience about the need for prison reform. It set many of the tropes of the women’s picture, but stands on its own perched on the dividng line between camp and high drama. It’s also unusual in that it got veiled lesbianism and references to drugs and prostitution past the Production Code. Eleanor Parker stars as the young innocent sent to prison because she was in the car while her husband got himself killed trying to rob a gas station. She’s thrown into a world of corruption, sadism, sexuale exploitation and terrific character women. A lot of the fun comes from watching the situation change her, and Parker gives a carefully modulated performance in which the young innocent is as interesting and believable as the woman she becomes. She’s not the whole show. You also get Ellen Corby as a crazed husband killer, Jan Sterling as a dumb blonde, Betty Garde (the original Aunt Eller) as the recruiter for a shop-lifting ring, Lee Patrick as a vice queen who could be the dictionary illustration for “lipstick lesbian,” Olive Deering as a suicidal inmate, Jane Darwell as matron of the isolation room, Gertrude W. Hoffmann as a lifer and Gertrude Michael as a fallen society woman. Best of all are Agnes Moorehead, who could ring nuance out of a laundry list, as the sympathetic warden and Hope Emerson as the sadistic matron who looks on Parker as a source of income and possibly something more. Cromwell was always a whiz at directing actors and melds the cast into a solid ensemble. He and cinematographer Carl E. Guthrie create some powerful visuals, but one of the most stunning effects uses sound. In her first night in the cell block, Allen has to adjust to sleeping in a room full of people as the soundtrack fills with coughs, yawns, and sobs that gradually overwhelm her and us.

TCMFF Day One
Opening night of TCMFF includes a healthy dose of crime. The gala event will be PULP FICTION (1994), 6:30 PM at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, with John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Harvey Keitel in conversation. FNF prez Eddie Muller will introduce Raoul Walsh’s WHITE HEAT (1949) at American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre, 7:00 PM. On the lighter side, CLUE will play poolside at The Hollywood Roosevelt , 7:30 PM with Lesley Ann Warren in attendance.
Tumblr media
The second round of screenings include Richard Brooks IN COLD BLOOD (1967), introduced by producer Michael Uslan, 9:30 at the TCL Chinese Theatres Multiplex, House 1 and the world premiere restoration of GAMBIT (1966), introduced by writer and film historian Sloan DeForrest.
WHITE HEAT
(1949): “Top of the world, Ma!” A G-man (Edmond O'Brien) infiltrates a gang run by a mother-fixated psychotic, James Cagney in a standout performance. This film marks the cinematic movement away from the traditional Warner Brothers’ portrayal of the gangster to the more cynical and psychological film noir interpretation. Virginia Kellogg garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story for the film. Pointless trivia: Naked Gun 33 1/3 borrowed the plot. Dir. Raoul Walsh
IN COLD BLOOD
(1967) Bleak adaptation of Truman Capote’s groundbreaking true crime book. Two men (Robert Blake and Scott Wilson) brutally murder a small-town Kansas family, thinking that ten thousand dollars is hidden in the house. They flee with the forty-three dollars that they actually found, and the FBI hunts them. Dir. Richard Brooks

Okay, so, I’m thinking about Stav’s post regarding the TFS casting weirdness and the audition casting vs the announced casting and, keeping the ton of victor-owens parallels in mind (see here, and here) and keeping multiple timelines in mind and keeping the idea of Owens possibly being Victor in another timeline/in the Edward timeline in mind:
Is it just me, or does the actor who was announced to play Victor in TFS resemble Owens WAY more than he resembles Young Victor/Kevin L Johnson???
Tumblr media
Like look at those two and then look at Kevin:
Tumblr media
The TFS actor for Victor, Mike Jibson, resembles Owens WAY more than he resembles Young Victor in the show/way more than he resembles Kevin L Johnson IMO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like there IS a resemblance between Mike Jibson and Kevin, but a.) I think the resemblance between Mike Jibson and Owens is much stronger and b.) there’s also a resemblance between canon Victor/Kevin and Owens which complicates things
Tumblr media
And the Virginia Creel that they cast for TFS has blue eyes versus canon Virginia’s brown eyes (i know contacts are an option here but just setting that aside):
Tumblr media
Versus Connie Frazier/the actress that plays her/Catherine Dyer:
Tumblr media
And versus Owens’ current S4 wife/the actress that plays her, Christine Kellogg-Darrin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Canon Virginia seems to resemble the TFS casting for Virginia the LEAST put of all of these ladies!! Even setting the eye colour aside and just looking at the face, especially the nose and jaw!! PLUS the fact that Alice is weirdly missing from TFS vs the fact that in the Edward timeline, Alice is the mother (which would explain TFS “virgnia’s” blue eyes vs canon Alice’s blue eyes)…..
And also, I wonder if the Creel daughter is here after all- I mean, the casting for Karen Wheeler certainly could pass as a Creel, and as James pointed out, she really does resemble Alice:
Tumblr media
And with what I talked about here about Karen likely being daughter-Virginia/being the Creel daughter in the Edward timeline…. SOMETHING IS GOING ON HERE!!
And also, as a brief final note, isn’t it a Little Tiny Bit Interesting that Connie might be Edward Timeline Alice/Mother Alice vs Connie being Played by Catherine “Cathy” Dyer vs Owens’ S4 wife being named Cathy???

tell me about your fallout fic bestie!!!! i want to Know
Hello it’s time to talk about crawl out through the fallout
So its a rewrite of a fic I was writing in 2017-2018, but I wanted to redo it bc I think my style is a lot better now and also I have some themes i want to look at, namely how do you find a place in a world that’s suddenly shifted from what you knew
So it follows a few people,
Delilah Edwards who’s an anchorage vet bc I decided the gender-segregated veteran/lawyer thing the actual game has was lazy. She’s very dear to me, one of my first really fleshed out ocs.
Her husband Nate, who has a fun lil secret I won’t spoil just yet bc I want to practice mystery writing (I’m throwing in a fun connection to 76 in that his folks are from West Virginia and knew my 76 character Jackaby)
And then the third oc is Bishop Abrams, who is new-ish but very special, he comes in later. But he’s sent by the institute to bring Delilah to them when their first two plans go haywire, and he misinterprets his orders as ‘fight Delilah’. So he becomes the overboss of Nuka World.
I’m essentially rewriting the campaign and making actual choices with it, since the actual game you don’t really get to make any real decisions. (I’m mostly mad about Kellogg, bc he reminds me of Daud from dishonored and I want to do more stuff with him)

James Cagney and Margaret Wycherly in White Heat (Raoul Walsh, 1949)
Cast: James Cagney, Virginia Mayo, Edmond O'Brien, Margaret Wycherly, Steve Cochran, John Archer, Wally Cassell, Fred Clark. Screenplay: Ivan Goff, Ben Roberts, based on a story by Virginia Kellogg. Cinematography: Sidney Hickox. Film Editing: Owen Marks. Music: Max Steiner
It still baffles me that Raoul Walsh's terrific crime thriller White Heat received only one Oscar nomination, and that one for the scenario devised by Virginia Kellogg, which was notoriously revised not only by Kellogg but also by the credited screenwriters Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts with much uncredited help from James Cagney and his friends Humphrey Bogart and Frank McHugh. Where were the nominations for Walsh's no-nonsense direction, Cagney's superbly over-the-top performance (especially the scene in which Cody Jarrett goes berserk on learning of his dear old mother's death), Margaret Wycherly's tiger mom, or even Virginia Mayo's tough broad? Mayo was one of the more underrated blond bombshells of the era. She could have been a rival to Dorothy Malone and Gloria Grahame for tough-girl roles, but under contract to Samuel Goldwyn, she got stuck in forgettable musicals and comedies in which she played the foil to fellow Goldwyn contract player Danny Kaye. The good reviews she got for playing Dana Andrews's cheating wife in William Wyler's 1946 The Best Years of Our Lives showed that she had more acting talent than Goldwyn had revealed, but with a few exceptions -- White Heat being the most notable -- she got stuck in movies that played off her beauty more than her acting ability. Edmond O'Brien also shines in the part of the undercover detective who buddies up to Cody, and a good deal of the suspense of the film hinges on his hair-breadth avoidance of having his cover blown. It's to the credit of Walsh, the supporting players, and the fleet of screenwriters that although Cagney's performance fires the film, it never completely burns it up -- there's always someone or something else to watch.

The financial system would be in great peril if one or more big banks fail. "When we get to a downturn, banks won't have the cushion to absorb the losses. Without a cushion, we will have 2008 and 2009 again."
Tumblr media
Student debt, which has been on a steep rise for years, could figure greatly in the next credit downturn. "There are parallels to 2008: There are massive amounts of unaffordable loans being made to people who can't pay them"
Tumblr media
The US national debt has spiked $1 trillion in less than 6 months! "If we keep throwing gas on flames with deficit spending, I worry about how severe the next downturn is going to be--and whether we have enough bullets left ,"
Tumblr media
Total household debt rose to an all-time high of $13.67 trillion at year-end 2019. "Any type of secured lending backed by an asset that is overvalued should be a concern… that is what happened with housing." Get in touch with an expert using the button down below:
