Born on this day: fabulous 1950s rhythm and blues queen Ruth Brown (12 January 1928 - 17 November 2006). I have cherished memories of seeing “Miss Rhythm” perform several times over the years at Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly weekenders. Even in declining health, she exuded earth mother warmth and rocked the house. And Brown knew how to milk it for dramatic effect. “The doctors told me I’d never walk again,” she’d declare. “And here I am!” Which always elicited an eruption of applause! Ruth Brown was a woman and a half! For John Waters fans, Brown is synonymous with the role of Motormouth Maybelle in the original (and definitive!) 1988 version of Hairspray. As Brown told NPR in 1997, she almost declined the part. “I had said, well, I'm not going to do this film, especially when they took me to wardrobe and brought that white wig out. I said, not on your life … (But Divine stepped in.) I called him the divine Divine. He came to me, and he said, “Girl, put that wig on your head and make some money.” And I said to him, “No, I'm going to lose every fan I've got in the world if I come out with this white wig.” And Divine said, “Well, I tell you what. For every one you lose, I'm going to bring you two.” And every time I see that film - and it runs continuously, and I've gone into grocery stores and see young people following me around - my ego says, “Oh, they know who I am, Ruth Brown,” that kind of thing.  And then they will eventually say, “Aren't you Motormouth Maybelle?'” That was my role and continues to be my claim to fame, you know. That cult film has really been wonderful. I go to the mailbox quite often now and find a little cheque with John Waters - God bless him - on it. Per non parlare del suo look: se ne frega altamente delle mode ed ha il suo stile inconfondibile, che è solo il suo, ed è al di sopra di qualsiasi stereotipo di bellezza. ❤️ Non ha complessi: porta orgogliosamente il suo naso importante, senza pensare ad alcuna forma di chirurgia plastica, con tanto di brufolo, se c’è, e se ne frega altamente del giudizio degli altri. Con personalità ignora i parrucchieri: niente tintura e niente piega e...ciao! Raccoglie i capelli bianchi sotto il cappello e va al lavoro.

Accetta se stessa e il passare del tempo come poche, con disinvoltura e tranquillità: niente botulino, acido ialuronico. Le sue rughe le piacciono e vanno bene così. 🔝🔝🔝🔝

E gli uomini? 😆Non ha nessuna smania di piacere ad alcuno. Da sola sta bene, quasi meglio. Sono anni che non se ne vede uno al suo fianco; single incallita, ha costruito la sua vita intorno a se stessa.

Ma quello che mi piace di più di lei è, oltre alla generosità mai sbandierata, la sua meritocrazia: dolci 🍩🍦🎂 a chi fa il bravo e agli altri carbone, ma sempre con un fondo di dolcezza. Ha un suo senso della giustizia la befana e, senza leggere letterine, decide cosa dare e a chi.

The Issue With ‘Viva Las Vengeance’:

A Mini Review of Panic! at the Disco’s New Single

I’ve enjoyed Panic! at the Disco’s music for just under a half of my short twenty years of life; starting with their 2013 album ‘Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die’ before slowly falling in love with their previous works over time. Their new single, ‘Viva Las Vengeance’, feels like Brendon Urie’s ego is pandering to an era of music that ended five years ago.

Although I personally dislike Urie (frontman of the band), this review will have nothing to do with his person, rather it will look into the song itself.

The band dominated alternative spheres of music from 2006-2016, before a less successful sixth album in 2018. The ideas presented lyrically throughout the song are clearly meant to remind fans of a more nostalgic and successful time of the band. Urie fails in this regard. With references to their previous works with lines like ‘I don’t wanna be a diva’ paralleling ‘I’m a diva’ from their debut record, as well as referencing Urie’s stage persona - which is always flamboyant and slightly camp. There are continuous ideas of Vegas are meant to echo a vibe of their TWTDTRTD, but instead makes it sound like cookie-cutter, played in the supermarket type pop music. There is no resounding interesting idea conveyed in the song; it just sounds like someone with a victim complex whining about being famous and wanting vengeance.

Sonically, I actually enjoy the song; the guitar tone is good, the rhythm is catchy, the bass is somewhat interesting and - as usual - the way Urie uses keys does add to the feel of the song. However, just because you have a large vocal range, Mr. Urie, does not mean you have to consistantly sing in a range that only dogs can hear. You are 35 years old, Urie, and you smoke a lot of weed - your voice will change over time, you can sing in a lower range and keep your songs interesting. Urie does has a fantastic voice and a healthy belt, in this song though, it sounds so incredibly strained throughout the chorus that it’s almost uncomfortable to listen to. LA Devotee, a song from 2016′s Death of a Bachelor, is performed half a step down live and I reckon that ‘Viva Las Vengeance’ will have a similar treatment.

Overall, if you enjoy pop music that is too much, unoriginal and forced - then this is the single for you.

Mr. Urie, as a fan of Panic At the Disco, I implore you to drop the title and release your own music under your own name. This mediocre slop is ruining the integrity of the band.

Sharon Cohen was born in Tel Aviv in 1969. She came out as trans to her family when she was 13.

At 18, she became Israel's first drag queen. She adopted the stage name Dana International during this time, and continued to use the name after her transition.

When it was announced that Sharon would be representing Israel at Eurovision, many Orthodox Jewish people were opposed to the idea.

After winning the contest Dana International stated: “My victory proves God is on my side... I want to send my critics a message of forgiveness: try to accept me.
