LENA YENER —
cis female & she/her

august 8, 1991
artist / owner of the broken spine
south addition
biography
lightening round —
born and raised in washington dc. parents emigrated from turkey. father was a diplomat and mother still works as a translator/interpreter
had a very strict and conservative upbringing. suffered abuse at the hands of a family member and was kept in silence about it
went to nyc for university and her first art project. the first exlorations into her art and ideas began with photography at music festivals, art directing for advertisements and magazines, and music videos
met her first partner and began a relationship with them during this time, even asked them to move back to washington dc with her when her time in nyc came to an end
the relationship always felt as though it were missing something and as though lena kept coming up short. when a new project came up and lena was to relocate for her work (to anchorage) she asked her partner to come with her and proposed. the no on both counts was devastating but she poured her pain into her work. plus it went along with the theme of her life
the move to anchorage was only meant to be temporary but lena ended up in a rebound relationship that fulfilled a void and she ended up staying even after her project was complete. making a home in anchorage and traveling when necessary
upon settling into anchorage, lena opened a book bar called the broken spine and has too much fun running it
as with anything else in her life relating to love, the rebound relationship eventually came to an end. leaving lena to stop making her work about heartbreak and push for something greater
a few of her projects/series have brought her international attention and acclaim. the first being, ‘i could not protect her’, a multimedia work, both her signature cinematic still photography along with a silent film detail her journey though abuse and the unchecked actions by the abuser. the next being her series titled “3ieb!” in arabic / “shame on me!” in english. a series that equally caused an uproar and gave voice to hundreds of thousands of middle eastern women all over the world
recently lena has been dipping her toe into video work once again, beginning to shift away from her decade long photography medium by publishing a book of a compilation of all her work. a little different from the music videos she’d produced in the past and her recent foray into short film, lena is interested in moving forward in long-form video work
the positive shift in her love life, experiencing real love for the first time without the usual toxicity she’d fallen into in the past and finally experiencing healthy love has also made a big difference

MWW Artwork of the Day (11/15/22) Tom Lovell (American, 1909-1997) Balloonists Struggle to Escape a Doomed Gondola (Sept. 1934) Oil on joined board, 58.4 x 62.2 cm. Private Collection
On July 28, 1934, the Explorer I manned by Major William E. Kepner, Captain Albert W. Stevens, and Captain Orvil A. Anderson, attempted to set the new highest-altitude record, but came short of this goal when the gas bag exploded, forcing the three adventurers to "leap for their lives by parachute." This work here illustrates this harrowing feat and was both the cover of the 75th anniversary issue of National Geographic magazine as well as a feature in the same issue. It illustrates the balloon after its crash landing of the first attempt, surrounded by the survivors. The artist, Tom Lovell, was a creator of pulp fiction magazine covers and illustrations, and of visual art of the American West. He once said of himself: "I consider myself a storyteller with a brush. I try to place myself back in imagined situations that would make interesting and appealing pictures. I am intent on producing paintings that relate to the human experience."

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 on a flight from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing, pilots Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan. All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with a few serious injuries.
This water landing of a powerless jetliner became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson", and a National Transportation Safety Board official described it as "the most successful ditching in aviation history". The Board rejected the notion that the pilot could have avoided ditching by returning to LaGuardia or diverting to nearby Teterboro Airport.
The pilots and flight attendants were awarded the Master's Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in recognition of their "heroic and unique aviation achievement".
An NTSB board member called the ditching "the most successful ... in aviation history. These people knew what they were supposed to do and they did it and as a result, no lives were lost." New York State Governor David Paterson called the incident "a Miracle on the Hudson." U.S. President George W. Bush said he was "inspired by the skill and heroism of the flight crew," and praised the emergency responders and volunteers. President-elect Barack Obama said that everyone was proud of Sullenberger's "heroic and graceful job in landing the damaged aircraft." He thanked the crew, whom he invited to his inauguration five days later.
The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators awarded the crew the rarely bestowed Master's Medal on January 22, 2009 for outstanding aviation achievement, at the discretion of the Master of the Guild. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented the crew with the Keys to the City, and Sullenberger with a replacement copy of a library book lost on the flight, Sidney Dekker's Just Culture: Balancing Safety and Accountability. Rescuers received Certificates of Honor.
The crew received a standing ovation at the Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009, and Sullenberger threw the ceremonial first pitch of the 2009 Major League Baseball season for the San Francisco Giants. His Giants jersey was inscribed with the name "Sully" and the number 155 – the count of people aboard the plane.
On July 28, passengers Dave Sanderson and Barry Leonard organized a thank you luncheon for emergency responders from Hudson County, New Jersey, on the shores of Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, New Jersey, where 57 passengers had been brought following their rescue. Present were members of the U.S. Coast Guard, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, NY Waterway Ferries, the American Red Cross, Weehawken Volunteer First Aid, the Weehawken Police Department, West New York E.M.S., North Bergen E.M.S., the Hudson County Office of Emergency Management, the New Jersey E.M.S. Task Force, the Guttenberg Police Department, McCabe Ambulance, the Harrison Police Department, and doctors and nurses who treated survivors.
Sullenberger was named Grand Marshal for the 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.
In August 2010, aeronautical chart publisher Jeppesen issued a humorous approach plate titled "Hudson Miracle APCH," dedicated to the five crew of Flight 1549 and annotated "Presented with Pride and Gratitude from your friends at Jeppesen."
Sullenberger retired on March 3, 2010, after thirty years with US Airways and its predecessor, Pacific Southwest Airlines. At the end of his final flight he was reunited with Skiles and a number of the passengers from Flight 1549.
In December 2010, Sullenberger was appointed an Officer of France's Legion of Honour.
N106US, the accident aircraft, was moved to a salvage yard in New Jersey and put up for auction a week after the accident, but remained without takers for over two years. In 2011, it was purchased by the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and reassembled, minus the engines, in the museum's main hangar, where it is currently on display.
In 2013, the entire crew was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
The ditching was recorded by several closed-circuit television cameras. Television reports and documentaries produced soon afterward contained extensive video of the ditching and rescue, and recorded interviews with the aircrew, passengers, rescuers, and other key participants.
Sullenberger's 2009 memoir, Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters was adapted into a feature film Sully, directed by Clint Eastwood. It starred Tom Hanks as Sullenberger and Aaron Eckhart as co-pilot Jeff Skiles. It was released by Warner Bros. on September 9, 2016.
In May 2011, CBS News hired Sullenberger as an aviation and safety expert.
His second book, Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America's Leaders, was published in May 2012. He was ranked second in Time's Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009, after Michelle Obama.
In December 2018, he received the Tony Jannus Award for distinguished achievement in commercial air transportation.
Sullenberger's speech before Congress concerning U.S. civil aviation is featured in Michael Moore's 2009 documentary Capitalism: A Love Story.
Sullenberger is also referred to in the 2011 romantic comedy film Friends with Benefits. Throughout the film, Justin Timberlake's character repeatedly suggests to people he meets aboard planes that modern airplanes practically fly themselves, and that Sullenberger's feat was less impressive than it was portrayed, an idea for which he encounters incredulity and hostility. Mila Kunis' character is also seen reading Sullenberger's English Wikipedia article.
The 2010 song "A Real Hero", by French electronica artist College and the band Electric Youth, is about Captain Sullenberger and the Flight 1549 water landing. Frontman Austin Garrick was inspired to write the song by his grandfather, whose reference to Sullenberger as "a real human being and a real hero" became the song's refrain.
Radio personality Garrison Keillor wrote "Pilot Song: The Ballad of Chesley Sullenberger III" for the January 17, 2009 edition of his radio variety show A Prairie Home Companion.
Sullenberger appeared as himself in a cameo role in the 2017 film Daddy's Home 2.
"Hudson River Runway", the March 14, 2011, episode of the TV series Mayday, documents the events around Flight 1549's emergency landing, and contains interviews with several of its real-life participants. Captain Sullenberger is not interviewed in the show, but is portrayed in reenactments by actor Christopher Britton.
President George H. W. Bush's service dog Sully, who was assigned to Bush in mid-2018 after the death of Bush's wife Barbara, was named after Sullenberger.
Sully is featured in the pilot of the 2020 Fox cartoon series Duncanville.
Sullenberger was widely celebrated for landing the plane with no loss of life.
Jeffrey Bruce "Jeff" Skiles was flying as a First Officer on flight 1549 due to a staff reduction at US Airways; he had usually flown as Captain prior to the staff reduction and actually had slightly more flight hours than Sullenberger (though he had much less experience in the Airbus A320).
Both Skiles' parents were pilots during his childhood, and he became a pilot himself when he was just sixteen years old. He first worked flying cargo airplanes, and then worked for Midstate Airlines from 1983 to 1986, but at the time of the emergency landing he had been with US Airways for 23 years.
Atul Gawande, author of The Checklist Manifesto, asserted that the successful emergency landing relied on the cooperation of Sullenberger and Skiles. Gawande's central premise is that even really experienced people in any field encounter rare events, and that successfully coping with the rare event requires first the careful anticipation of future emergencies, and second, preparing a well thought-out list of steps to follow, in advance.
In his book Gawande reminded readers that, during an emergency, there are so many tasks to complete, that the co-pilot is working at least as hard as the pilot. Sullenberger had taken on the task of finding a safe place to land, and actually landing, leaving his experienced copilot Skiles the task of following the checklist to try to restart the jet engines. He noted that Skiles was able to complete the checklist in the less than three minute period between the bird strike and the landing, noting this was "something investigators later testified to be "very remarkable" in the time frame he had—and something they found difficult to replicate in simulation."
Skiles went on to become the Vice President of the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations (CAPA) that represents the interests of 28,000 airline pilots in safety and security issues. In this role he was instrumental in the creation of the First Officer Qualification rule which significantly increased the requirements for training and experience of First Officers on the flight deck of US registered airliners. Skiles joined with the Families of Continental Flight 3407 and the National Air Disaster Alliance to mold the creation of and ensure passage of the Airline Safety Act of 2010. This sweeping legislation significantly improved safety in the US airline industry and as of 2020 there has not been even one fatality due to a US airline accident in over 10 years.
Skiles is a writer and since 2011 has published over 100 articles on safety and general interest aviation topics in nationally distributed magazines such as Sport Aviation, FLYING, Air & Space, PilotMAG, Midwest Flyer, Vintage Airplane, and the Physicians Executive Journal.
Jeffrey Bruce "Jeff" Skiles, as of 2020, is piloting Boeing 787 Dreamliners for American Airlines.

OVERALL COMPANY
News of Element’s disbandment spreads fast through staff whispers even before the news is publicly announced. They’re the first group Gold Star’s ever debuted that has disbanded, and the preparation of a new boy group and girl group debuting under Gold Star as a result has the company staff spread thinner than they had already been. It’s not yet apparent if having three new groups debuting under Gold Star in the next year will help the company thrive or be its downfall, but with their soloist leaving earlier in the year still being talked-about news, Gold Star can only hope it at least diverts the talk around them to something else.
Important dates:
June 8-13: Triple Fantasy Festival in Indio, CA, USA.
SILHOUETTE
Riding high off of their latest comeback’s success, Silhouette continues to prepare for their Japanese comeback this quarter up until the single release in May and the album release at the very end of the quarter. It’s also not long before they begin preparing to make their Korean comeback, and they’ll record the songs off of their new album in May. Once their album is finished recording and off for mastering, in June, they’ll quickly fit in the rest of their pre-comeback preparations, from rehearsing the choreography for “Kill Bill” and b-side “Recipe”, shooting the photo book, and filming the music video to wrap up the quarter. It’s a faster comeback preparation process than usual, but after eleven years in the industry, their team trusts they can handle.
Important dates:
April 5: Pretz CF filming.
April 26: B.L.E.S.S.E.D. comeback teaser photo and photo jacket shoot.
May 10: “B.L.E.S.S.E.D.” M/V filming.
May 28: “B.L.E.S.S.E.D.” M/V release.
June 3: Black Box photo book shoot.
June 28: “Kill Bill” M/V filming day one.
June 29: “Kill Bill” M/V filming day two.
June 30: Release of B.L.E.S.S.E.D. Japanese album.
ARIA
This quarter, Aria will hold the concerts they prepared for last quarter (which include the solo stages they prepared) in Seoul and Tokyo. On their tenth anniversary on the nineteenth of April, they’ll release their new fan song and will also hold a special lottery fan sign for their fan club members for a special physical edition of the single. In June, they’ll leave their round of concerts behind to begin to prepare for their second comeback of the year. This comeback will be with a full album, but there won’t be that many more songs for each member to record than usual since several of the tracks are solo songs. At the end of June, with the rough versions of the tracks ready, the Aria members will turn to choreography practice of the title track, “Firework”. The solo tracks are assigned as follows:
“Stay There”: Leader/vocal/rapper
“Two Of Us”: Main vocal
“Actually, This Is A Secret”: Main dancer/lead vocal
“Hush”: Lead dancer/vocal
“Diary”: Main rapper/lead vocal
Important dates:
April 10: Pink Collection: Red and White concert at SK Handball Stadium in Seoul.
April 11: Pink Collection: Red and White concert at SK Handball Stadium in Seoul.
April 19: Release of “Everybody Ready” fan song, Tenth anniversary fan sign in Gangnam, Seoul.
May 1: Aria Japan Live Pink Collection concert at Toyosu Pit in Tokyo, Japan.
May 2: Aria Japan Live Pink Collection concert at Toyosu Pit in Tokyo, Japan.
ORIGIN
For the year’s second quarter, Origin is once again set to pumping up company profits (and meeting fans) with their continued world tour. This quarter, they see Japan, England, Germany, and Spain over the course of several flights out and back into (and back out of) Seoul. In mid-June, they’ll release their Japanese single which is, as everyone is expecting from them at this high a point in their careers, a success. When they’re in Seoul between tour stops, beginning in May, the members will start to prepare their next Korean comeback. Though it will be considered a Korean comeback, it will be their first all-English single — “Dynamite”. Recording will be done by the end of that month and, in June, it will be time for them to use the extra free time that comes with fewer tour dates to spend hours rehearsing the choreography.
Important dates:
April 25: Map of the Soul tour concert at Fukuoka PayPay Dome in Fukuoka, Japan.
April 26: Map of the Soul tour concert at Fukuoka PayPay Dome in Fukuoka, Japan.
May 7: Map of the Soul tour concert at Twickenham Stadium in London, England.
May 8: Map of the Soul tour concert at Twickenham Stadium in London, England.
May 12: Map of the Soul tour concert at De Kuip in London, England.
May 15: Map of the Soul tour concert at Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany.
May 16: Map of the Soul tour concert at Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany.
June 4: Map of the Soul tour concert at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona, Spain.
June 5: Map of the Soul tour concert at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona, Spain.
June 18: Release of ‘Stay Gold” Japanese single.
IMPULSE
They come back pretty early into the month and the comeback is well-received by fans, though also slightly overshadowed by the news that Element will be disbanding that comes out less than a week after Impulse releases their new album. Public attention directed at Gold Star may be diverted, but fans are paying attention and they have to be given content, so the members will have several promotional videos to film over the course of their comeback promotions, as well as a few fan signs. They’ll also make two television appearances on live performance shows. Fan support also earns the fans a special “angel version” dance practice. After Impulse finishes promoting, they’ll be mostly off the radar save for a fan sign in their role as ambassadors of the Face Shop as they dive into rehearsals for the tour they’ll be embarking on beginning next quarter. They’ll perform their recent songs, so they’ll need to brush up on their last few comebacks, and each member will also get to choose a solo stage to perform (as long as it matches their position).
Important dates:
April 6: “All Night” M/V reaction video filming.
April 7: Release of “All Night” & All Light album + press showcase, music show promotions continue through May 7.
April 8: Relay Dance video filming.
April 10: Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook appearance filming (to air: April 23).
April 11: Open Concert appearance filming (to air: April 18).
April 15: Fan sign in Yeouido, Seoul.
April 17: Fan sign in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul.
April 22: Mannequin MV video filming.
May 2: Fan sign in Yongsan, Seoul.
May 3: All Night Special Dance Practice video filming.
May 7: End of music show promotions.
June 15: The Face Shop fansign in Yongsan.
↳ PULS2
No schedules for the quarter.
Important dates:
N/A
FUSE
April proceeds similarly to what Fuse’s schedules have been for the past few months. They begin the month with a photo shoot for the US edition of W magazine and at the end of the month, they’ll give a military performance. In May, the Fuse members not in Fuse B&W are given a mostly free month before June comes around, when they’ll finally begin working on their next comeback, which will release just over a year since their last release. Gold Star has only approved a digital single comeback for them, but by the end of June, they’ll have it recorded and ready to continue preparing for their comeback next quarter.
Important dates:
April 4: Photo shoot for W’s May issue.
April 28: Performance (Psycho & Umpah Umpah) for military at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam (also performing: Lipstick and BEE).
↳ FUSE B&W
Choreography practice continues to be a pivotal point of focus leading up to the actual song releases, but April and the beginning of May will also involve shooting music videos and other promotional videos for the era, as well as photo shoots for the album jacket and teasers. Once they make their subunit debut, they promote for almost two months straight into the next quarter. “Monster” outperforms “Naughty” by a lot, but the latter is intended more as a follow-up track to extend their promotions than a true single focus anyway, so Gold Star isn’t too bothered by it and the fans are happy for the sub-unit to promote so long after an extended period without as many schedules as fans would have liked to see them have.
Important dates:
April 12: Monster photo book and teaser photo shoot.
April 20: “Monster” M/V filming.
April 30: “Naughty” M/V and episode 2 filming.
May 2: Episode 3 (Uncover) filming.
May 17: Release of “Monster” & Monster mini-album + press showcase, music show promotions continue through June 17.
May 30: Fan sign in Mapo, Seoul.
May 31: Fan sign in Yeungdeongpo, Seoul.
June 7: Fan sign in Jongno, Seoul.
June 15: Fan sign in Gangnam, Seoul.
June 17: End of music show promotions.
June 21: Release of “Naughty”, music show promotions continue through July 21.
ELEMENT
Last month, the Element members were informed shortly before their planned late March comeback that their comeback date was being pushed back to mid-March. The next day, this information was shared with the public. Answers weren’t given much at first, but at the beginning of April, the members are pulled into a meeting with a very serious mood if their managers’ expressions are anything to go by. In the meeting, they’re told by a staff member that You will be their final comeback after reviewing the company’s profits and speaking to investors and the company’s board in recent meetings. Element will be disbanding and the company will be re-debuting the members in new groups. They are told not to share this with fans, as the company will take the initiative to announce the impending disbandment the day after Element makes their comeback and the news about re-debut will be made public at a latter time.
Promotions for the comeback itself are kept to a minimum other than fan signs as closure for final meeting with fans as Element, Gold Star apparently seeing little purpose in a big budget for the group’s farewell. Element officially disbands on May 13, 2021, and the members will henceforth be under the schedules of Element’s new upcoming boy group Quicksilver or their new upcoming girl group Marigold. Element members must be moved out of their dorms into their new dorms between May 13 and May 31.
Important dates:
April 5: Company meeting.
April 12: Release of “You” & You mini-album + press showcase, music show promotions continue through June 17.
April 18: Fansign in Gangnam, Seoul.
April 27: Fansign in Mapo, Seoul.
May 10: Fansign in Gimpo.
May 11: Fansign in Yeouido, Seoul.
May 12: End of music show promotions.
FEMME FATALE
Femme Fatale finish comeback preparations in the first few weeks of April before they dive back into promotions at the end of the month after more than a year since their last comeback. The song is received well, as most anything seems to be with Femme Fatale’s name attached to it recently, and becomes their third number one hit. It breaks their record for highest charting in the US as well, and by the time they come to the end of single promotions, fans are once again reinvigorated despite the low quantity of promotions for the release. Luckily, fans won’t have to wait another whole year for their next comeback and in June, Femme Fatale will record their next single, “Ice Cream”, and learn its choreography to prepare to once again comeback in late July next quarter.
Important dates:
April 3: “How You Like That” M/V filming.
April 20: “How You Like That” Performance Video filming.
April 23: Release of “How You Like That” + press showcase, music show promotions continue through May 23.
April 24: Performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
May 23: End of music show promotions.
VIVE
The rumors that Gold Star is already planning to debut another boy group on the heels of Element’s disbandment puts pressure on Vive to cement their place in the company (as much as a supposedly temporary group can) before they’re facing direct competition form within the same company. Their debut rollout is no small task though and they’re getting the most dedicated resources of any other group under the company at the moment. Their debut album sells well, allowing them to mark their place as the company’s third best physical sellers behind the much more established Impulse and Origin right at debut. They manage to chart, too, not a small feat for a brand new boy group relying on fandom power. They’ve got music videos for almost every track on their debut mini-album to show for all of the attention they’re getting, too, and a first win in their second week of promotions. At the end of their debut promotions, Gold Star will reveal their fandom name (’Vivid”), their fandom colors, and their lightstick, and they’ll begin to prepare to perform a series of US showcase shows next quarter. By June, they’ll already be back in the studio to record their first full album so that they can release it before the end of the summer.
Important dates:
April 4: “Crown” M/V filming.
April 10: “Blue Orangeade” Lyric Video filming.
April 19: Release of “Crown” & The Dream Chapter: Star mini-album + press showcase, music show promotions continue through May 19.
April 22: Relay Dance video [2] filming.
April 24: M2 Be Original video filming.
April 26: “Cat & Dog” M/V & “Cat & Dog (English Ver.)” M/V filming.
May 1: Fan sign in Gangnam, Seoul.
May 3: Fan sign in Yongsan, Seoul.
May 11: Fan sign in Mapo, Seoul.
May 19: End of music show promotions.
May 27: “Nap of a Star” M/V filming.
MARIGOLD
The former female members of Element and two trainees newly confirmed for debut will in early May. After Element finishes promotions, all four members will take a trip for four days to stay at a house on Jeju Island together to get to know each other better with all expenses paid for by the company. When they’re back in Seoul, the members will begin to work together, though not yet officially on their debut this quarter as Gold Star needs to get them used to working together first. The team has been picked to have both standout vocalists and standout dancers, but that won’t mean much if they look as thrown into this as they are. Tthey’ll begin to learn and rehearse choreography they’ll eventually record and release only to reveal the members one by one. The choreography is as follows:
Main dancer/vocal/rapper: “16 Shots”
Main dancer/vocal/rapper & Main rapper/lead dancer/vocal: “Baby Don’t Stop”
Main dancer/vocal/rapper & Main rapper/lead dancer/vocal & Lead vocal: “No Tears Left To Cry”
All members: “River”
All members must be moved into Marigold’s dorm by the end of May.
Important dates:
May 13-17: Group trip to Jeju Island.
QUICKSILVER
The former male members of Element will meet their new groupmates in early May. After Element finishes promotions, they’ll all start moving into the new Quicksilver dorm and all members must be moved in by the end of May. At the beginning of June, they’ll follow in the girls’ footsteps and take a trip to Jeju Island together to get familiar with each other. Gold Star is conscious of not letting Quicksilver directly compete with Vive, so their debut will be later than Marigold’s, meaning there’s a bit more time for a predebut rollout for them. In June, they’ll be spending time in the studio learning choreography for some predebut videos Gold Star will upload. They aren’t filming the video just yet, but the following are the choreography they’ll be rehearsing:
“Pick It Up”
“Lick”
“CoCo” (Main dancer/lead vocal solo)
Important dates:
June 1-5: Group trip to Jeju Island.

During the week 15 – 19 February, the preparatory work for WRC-23 agenda item 9.1b continued in ITU‑R Working Party 4C (WP4C). The WRC agenda item has initiated technical studies on coexistence between the radio navigation satellite service (RNSS) and the amateur services in the 23cm band. As usual, the IARU participated in the meeting and delivered key information on amateur activities in this important microwave band. This information is vital to ensure the amateur services are realistically represented in the studies as they move forward.
It remains vital that national amateur communities present their views on the importance of this band to their national regulators in a consolidated and consistent manner.
To assist with this the IARU-R1 is developing supporting material that member societies can refer to when addressing the topic with their national regulator.
The work on this topic will continue throughout the year and beyond both in ITU‑R and in the regional telecommunications organisations and the IARU is committed to ensure every organisation understands the amateur position on this important microwave band.

ARRL CEO David Minster, NA2AA, will keynote the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo March 13 – 14 weekend. Minster’s talk — part of an 80+ speaker lineup — will begin at 2000 UTC (3 PM EST) on March 13. His appearance will highlight ARRL’s featured role at the Expo, which also will include “Ask The ARRL Lab.” ARRL is a QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo Partner.
Minster, who assumed the ARRL Headquarters leadership position last September, has launched major projects and assembled teams to foster innovation and individual skill development in radio technology and communications. In his keynote, Minster will share his enthusiasm for advancing amateur radio and highlight current ARRL initiatives to engage and inspire the current generation of hams. His presentation topics will include:
ARRL’s digital transformation, which promises to bring new value to ARRL members. An all-in digital approach will improve the way members access and engage with content, programs, and systems.
The ARRL Learning Center, a hub for members to discover the many facets of amateur radio and develop practical knowledge and skills.
Increasing video content, opening opportunities for amateur radio content creators and member-volunteers to learn, stay informed, and keep connected.
Improving training and tools to engage radio clubs, emergency communication volunteers, and students.
The ARRL Expo booth will feature “Ask the ARRL Lab,” where Lab staffers will answer questions live. Attendees can come into the booth lounge (featuring the Expo’s latest virtual meet-up and video technology), sit down at a virtual table, and ask ARRL Lab technical wizards for tips about projects or suggestions to address various station installations and problems. Attendees can also learn about Product Review equipment testing by the Lab, see a presentation on how the Lab can help hams with RFI problems, and tour W1AW — the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station — virtually. ARRL booth staff will also point attendees to helpful resources from across membership benefits, services, and programs.
Representing the ARRL Lab will be Lab Manager Ed Hare, W1RFI; Test Engineer Bob Allison, WB1GCM; Senior Laboratory Engineer Zack Lau, W1VT; RFI Engineer Paul Cianciolo, W1VLF, and W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q. Between all of them, they have over 100 years of experience at ARRL Headquarters,
QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo Chairman Eric Guth, 4Z1UG, also announced four live group kit-building workshops. Workshop instructors will guide participants through building a variety of kits, which will be available for purchase and delivered prior to the Expo so attendees can build them at home. Attendees unable to participate during the live sessions can order and build kits by watching the workshop videos during the on-demand period that follows the Expo through April 12.
Workshop kits prices range from $15 to $30. Early-bird discount tickets and links to purchase kits can be found at the QSO Today Expo website. These workshops will include:
Building the NS-40 QRP Transmitter, a 14-component, 5 W transmitter for 7.030 MHz (with instructors David Cripe, NM0S, and Virginia Smith, NV5F).
The Learn-to-Solder Workshop will introduce the basic tools and techniques of building electronic kits. Participants will build a 20-meter transmitter kit (with instructors Rex Harper, W1REX, and Stephen Houser, N1SH).
Building the Cric-Key, a simple CW keyer with paddle, suitable for home and field use (with instructor Joe Eisenberg, K0NEB).
The Mini-Sudden Receiver, a pocket-and-mint-tin friendly direct-conversion 20-meter receiver (with instructors Rex Harper, W1REX, and Stephen Houser, N1SH).

Grace Darmond (born Grace Marie Glionna; November 20, 1893 – October 8, 1963) was a Canadian-American actress.
Grace Marie Glionna was born in Toronto on November 20, 1893. Her parents were Vincent Glionna, an American-born violinist who had lived in Canada since 1877, and Alice Louise Sparks Glionna (1873–1963), an Ontario native.[4] She was of Italian descent on her father's side.
When Glionna was 16, Vincent Glionna died, and she and her mother immigrated to the United States, settling in Chicago.
As a teenager, Grace Glionna began to appear on the stage, changing her name to Grace Darmond. She signed with Selig Polyscope Company in 1914, and made her film debut in the comedy short The Clock Went Wrong.
Darmond was active onscreen from 1914 to 1927. She starred in the first Technicolor film, The Gulf Between (1917), with actor Niles Welch. The film premiered September 13 in Boston and September 21 at the Aeolian Hall in New York City. However, when the film went into limited release in early 1918 on a tour of Eastern U. S. cities, it was a critical and commercial failure. The early Technicolor process ("System 1") was an additive color process that required a special projector, and it suffered from "fringing" and "haloing" of colors.
Darmond was pretty, slender, and starred in many notable films of the period, but she never was able to break through as a leading actress in big budget films. Most of her roles were in support of bigger names of the time, and most of her starring roles were smaller, lesser known films. She appeared in Below the Surface (1920), in which she starred with Hobart Bosworth and Lloyd Hughes, and that same year she played in A Dangerous Adventure, produced and directed by Warner Brothers.[8] This led to her being cast alongside Boris Karloff in the mystery thriller The Hope Diamond Mystery (1921). In the July edition of Motion Picture Magazine, she was featured in an article by Joan Tully entitled "Mantled With Shyness (A Word Portrait of Grace Darmond)".
Her last most notable film was Wide Open (1927), starring Lionel Belmore and Dick Grace. When the advent of talkies came about, Darmond, like so many actresses and actors from the silent film era, was not able to make a successful transition. She ended her acting career, and for the most part disappeared from the public eye until her death in 1963.
Darmond was a lesbian. Although performing in a substantial number of films over roughly 13 years, she was known in Hollywood's inner circle as the lover of actress Jean Acker, the first wife of actor Rudolph Valentino. She was also associated, as many struggling actresses of the day were, with the actress Alla Nazimova, a former lover of Acker, although it has never been verified that Nazimova and Darmond were ever linked romantically. She and Acker attended parties at Nazimova's Garden of Allah, an imposing house on Sunset Boulevard named punningly after a Robert Smythe Hichens play Nazimova had appeared in.
She and Jean Acker met in 1918, and the two became lovers shortly thereafter. Acker met relatively unknown actor Valentino only a few months later at a party at Nazimova's home. She and Valentino began dating, but reportedly never had sexual relations. They married in 1919, but on their wedding night, Acker fled the house and ran to Darmond's home, stating that it was her that she loved. The marriage is alleged to have never been consummated, and Acker filed for a legal separation in 1921; she later filed charges of bigamy against Valentino when he married designer Natacha Rambova in Mexico before his divorce from Acker was finalized.
Darmond married Randolph P. Jennings, an oil man, on January 22, 1928. The marriage was solemnized in Hollywood by a minister called James H. Lash, and witnessed by Lillian Willat (legal married name of actress Billie Dove) and Robert Fairbanks (possibly Robert Payne Ullman, who was known professionally as Robert Fairbanks, brother of the actor Douglas Elton Thomas Ullman, aka Douglas Fairbanks).[16] This probable venue of the wedding was 7065 Hollywood Boulevard, which was the site of the Hollywood Congregational Church in the 1920s.
Darmond evidently lied about her age to her fiancé as well as the county clerk, as she would have been at least 29 at the time the marriage license was issued. There is an issue about whether she was born November 20, 1893, or November 20, 1898, but she could not possibly have been born as late as 1901.[18] She clearly continued this subterfuge with her husband into their marriage, as she is listed as his wife, Grace D. Jennings, 28, on the 1930 census, which also reveals that the couple resided at 712 N. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, California, and that they had a butler called Chris W. Tandoc. The pair divorced in 1935.
Darmond died at the age of 69 in her apartment at 7850 W. Sunset Blvd. (formerly the San Ramon Apartments; currently known as The Villa Rosa) in Hollywood. At the time, she had been being treated for lung pain at the Motion Picture & Television Country Hospital in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.

Oscar Stanton De Priest
Tumblr media
Oscar Stanton De Priest (March 9, 1871 – May 12, 1951) was an American politician and civil rights advocate from Chicago. A member of the Illinois Republican Party he was the first African American to be elected to Congress in the 20th century. During his three terms, he was the only African American serving in Congress. He served as a U.S. Representative from Illinois' 1st congressional district from 1929 to 1935. De Priest was also the first African-American U.S. Representative from outside the southern states and the first since the exit of North Carolina representative George Henry White from Congress in 1901.
Born in Alabama to freedmen parents, De Priest was raised in Dayton, Ohio. He studied business and made a fortune in Chicago as a contractor, and in real estate and the stock market before the Crash. A successful local politician, he was elected to the Chicago City Council in 1914, the first African American to hold that office.
In Congress in the early 1930s, he spoke out against racial discrimination, including at speaking events in the South; tried to integrate the House public restaurant; gained passage of an amendment to desegregate the Civilian Conservation Corps, one of the work programs under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal; and introduced anti-lynching legislation to the House (it was not passed because of the Solid South Democratic opposition). In 1934, De Priest was defeated by Arthur W. Mitchell, the first African American to be elected as a Democrat to Congress. De Priest returned to Chicago and his successful business ventures, eventually returning to politics, when he was again elected Chicago alderman in the 1940s.

De Priest was born in 1871 in Florence, Alabama, to freedmen, former slaves of mixed race. He had a brother named Robert. His mother, Martha Karsner, worked part-time as a laundress, and his father Neander was a teamster, associated with the "Exodus" movement. After the Civil War, thousands of blacks left continued oppression by whites in the South by moving to other states that offered promises of freedom and greater economic opportunities, such as Kansas. Others moved later in the century.
In 1878, the year after Reconstruction had ended and federal troops been withdrawn from the region, the De Priests left Alabama for Dayton, Ohio. Violence had increased in Alabama as whites had tried to restore white supremacy: the elder De Priest had to save his friend, former U.S. Representative James T. Rapier, from a lynch mob, and a black man was killed on their doorstep. The boy Oscar attended local schools in Dayton.
Career
Business
De Priest went to Salina, Kansas, to study bookkeeping at the Salina Normal School, established also for the training of teachers. In 1889 he moved to Chicago, Illinois, which had been booming as an industrial city. He worked first as an apprentice plasterer, house painter, and decorator. He became a successful contractor and real estate broker. He built a fortune in the stock market and in real estate by helping black families move into formerly all-white neighborhoods, often ones formerly occupied by ethnic white immigrants and their descendants. There was population succession in many neighborhoods under the pressure of new migrants.
Politics
From 1904 to 1908, De Priest was a member of the board of commissioners of Cook County, Illinois.
De Priest was elected in 1914 to the Chicago City Council, serving from 1915 to 1917 as alderman from the 2nd Ward, on the South Side. He was Chicago's first black alderman. In 1917 De Priest was indicted for alleged graft and resigned from the City Council. He hired nationally known Clarence Darrow as his defense attorney and was acquitted. He was succeeded in office by Louis B. Anderson.
In 1919, De Priest ran unsuccessfully for alderman as a member of the People's Movement Club, a political organization he founded. In a few years, De Priest's black political organization became the most powerful of many in Chicago, and he became the top black politician under Chicago Republican mayor William Hale Thompson.
In 1928, when Republican congressman Martin B. Madden died, Mayor Thompson selected De Priest to replace him on the ballot. He was the first African American elected to Congress outside the South and the first to be elected in the 20th century. He represented the 1st Congressional District of Illinois (which included The Loop and part of the South Side of Chicago) as a Republican. During the 1930 election, De Priest was challenged in the primary by noted African-American spokesperson, orator, and Republican Roscoe Conkling Simmons. De Priest defeated Simmon's primary challenge and won the general election afterward. During De Priest's three consecutive terms (1929–1935), he was the only black representative in Congress. He introduced several anti-discrimination bills during these years of the Great Depression.
DePriest's 1933 amendment barring discrimination in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a program of the New Deal to employ people across the country in building infrastructure, was passed by the Senate and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His anti-lynching bill failed due to opposition by the white conservative Democrats of the Solid South, although it would not have made lynching a federal crime. (Previous anti-lynching bills had also failed to pass the Senate, which was dominated by the South since its disenfranchisement of blacks at the turn of the century.) A third proposal, a bill to permit a transfer of jurisdiction if a defendant believed he or she could not get a fair trial because of race or religion, was passed by a later Congress.
Civil rights activists criticized De Priest for opposing federal aid to the poor. Nevertheless, they applauded him for making public speeches in the South despite death threats. They also praised De Priest for telling an Alabama senator he was not big enough to prevent him from dining in the private Senate restaurant. (Some Congressmen ate in the Senate restaurant to avoid De Priest, who usually ate in the Members Dining Room designated for Congressmen.) The public areas of the House and Senate restaurants were segregated. The House accepted that De Priest sometimes brought black staff or visitors to the Members Dining Room, but objected when he entertained mixed groups there.
De Priest defended the right of students of Howard University, a historically black college in Washington, D.C., to eat in the public section of the House restaurant and not be restricted to a section in the basement near the kitchen, used mostly by black employees and visitors. He took this issue of discrimination against the students (and other black visitors) to a special bipartisan House committee. In a three-month-long heated debate, the Republican political minority argued that the restaurant's discriminatory practice violated 14th Amendment rights to equal access. The Democratic majority skirted the issue by claiming that the restaurant was a private facility and not open to the public. The House restaurant remained segregated through much of the 1940s and maybe as late as 1952.
In 1929, De Priest made national news when First Lady Lou Hoover invited his wife, Jessie De Priest, to a traditional tea for congressional wives at the White House.
De Priest appointed Benjamin O. Davis Jr. to the United States Military Academy at a time when the only African-American line officer in the Army was Davis's father.
By the early 1930s, De Priest's popularity waned because he continued to oppose higher taxes on the rich and fought Depression-era federal relief programs under President Roosevelt. De Priest was defeated in 1934 by Democrat Arthur W. Mitchell, who was also African American. After returning to his businesses and political life in Chicago, De Priest was elected again to the Chicago City Council in 1943 as alderman of the 3rd Ward, serving until 1947. He died in Chicago at 80 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery.
Personal life
Oscar married the former Jessie L. Williams (c. 1873 – March 31, 1961). They had two sons together: Laurence W. (c. 1900 – July 28, 1916), who died at the age of 16 and Oscar Stanton De Priest, Jr. (May 24, 1906 – November 8, 1983) A great-grandson of Oscar De Priest, Jr., Philip R. DePriest, became the administrator of his estate after his grandmother's death in 1992. This included his great-grandfather's Oscar Stanton De Priest House, now a National Historic Landmark, which still held his locked political office. This had not been touched since about 1951. This great-grandson has been working to restore the office and house, and assessing the political archives—"a veritable treasure trove."
Legacy and honors
The Oscar Stanton De Priest House in Chicago, at 45th and King Drive, has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and city landmark.

Trump Acknowledges Discussing Biden in Call With Ukrainian Leader
By Peter Baker | Published Sept. 22, 2019 Updated 4:41 p.m. ET | New York Times | Posted September 22, 2019 |
WASHINGTON — President Trump acknowledged on Sunday that he discussed former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. with Ukraine’s president as Democrats ramped up calls for an investigation into whether he improperly pressured a foreign leader to investigate a political opponent.
While Mr. Trump defended his July phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine as perfectly appropriate, he confirmed that Mr. Biden came up during the discussion and that he accused the former vice president of corruption tied to his son Hunter’s business activities in that former Soviet republic.
“The conversation I had was largely congratulatory, with largely corruption, all of the corruption taking place and largely the fact that we don’t want our people like Vice President Biden and his son creating to the corruption already in the Ukraine,” Mr. Trump told reporters before leaving for a trip to Texas and Ohio.
Mr. Trump did not directly confirm news reports that he pressured Mr. Zelensky for an investigation. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Mr. Trump urged Mr. Zelensky about eight times during the July 25 phone call to work with the president’s lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, on an investigation of Mr. Biden and his son.
Mr. Giuliani has already publicly acknowledged pressing Ukrainian officials to investigate the Bidens, and Mr. Trump told reporters on Friday and again over the weekend that the former vice president should be investigated without saying whether it came up during the phone call.
The president’s interest over the summer in a Ukrainian investigation into Mr. Biden, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination and the right to run against Mr. Trump in next year’s election, coincided with his administration’s decision to hold up $250 million in security aid to Ukraine. But there have been no indications that Mr. Trump mentioned the money during the call. The president finally agreed to release the money this month after coming under bipartisan pressure from Congress.
Mr. Trump’s interactions with Ukraine are at least part of a whistle-blower’s complaint that has generated intense interest on Capitol Hill. The administration has refused to release the complaint to Congress. Mr. Trump said on Sunday that he would “love” to release a transcript of the call “but you have to be a little bit shy about doing it.”
The revelations increased pressure on Democrats to impeach Mr. Trump after months of stutter-start investigation into other matters and after resistance by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to pursue such an effort, with polls showing only limited public appetite for Congress removing the president from office.
“This would be, I think, the most profound violation of the presidential oath of office, certainly during this presidency, which says a lot,” said Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, the Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. “There is no privilege that covers corruption.”
Mr. Schiff, speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” said impeachment “may be the only remedy” if Mr. Trump did in fact withhold aid to Ukraine in the hopes that the country would pursue an investigation into the Biden family. “The president is pushing us down this road,” he said. “We may very well have crossed the Rubicon here.”
Senator Christopher S. Murphy, Democrat of Connecticut, said Congress had to take action. “If we do have the evidence from this whistle-blower that the president indeed did try to bully a foreign power into affecting our elections, then we have to do something about it,” he said on “Meet the Press” on NBC as he called for release of the whistle-blower’s complaint.
Mr. Murphy, who recently visited Ukraine, said Mr. Zelensky expressed consternation to him that the security aid was held up. The senator said administration officials gave him two explanations for holding up the money — that Mr. Trump was concerned about corruption in Ukraine and that he thought Europe should be the one to assist Kiev rather than the United States.
But Mr. Murphy cast doubt on those explanations and said the situation was clearly suspicious. “Obviously, the timing of this looks really terrible,” he said.
While most Republicans remained silent, one prominent senator added his voice to the chorus of concern. “If the President asked or pressured Ukraine’s president to investigate his political rival, either directly or through his personal attorney, it would be troubling in the extreme,” Senator Mitt Romney of Utah wrote on Twitter on Sunday. “Critical for the facts to come out.”
In Kiev, Mr. Zelensky has not commented on the matter since the issue erupted in news reports in recent days, but Ukraine’s foreign minister, Vadym Prystaiko, was quoted telling a Ukrainian news outlet on Saturday that the country’s leaders did not take Mr. Trump’s phone call as pressure.
“I know what the conversation was about and I think there was no pressure,” Mr. Prystaiko said. “This conversation was long, friendly, and it touched on many questions, sometimes requiring serious answers.”
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Sunday denied any link between the security aid and Mr. Trump’s interest in an investigation into his potential rival. “Well, that I can tell you, that there was no connection,” Mr. Mnuchin said on “Meet the Press.” “I have been involved with Secretary Pompeo and others on the national security team on the issue.”
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, appearing on several Sunday shows, did not answer in specifics when asked if there was a “quid pro quo” agreement between Mr. Trump and Ukrainian officials. He insisted more generally that any discussions of aid delivered to Ukraine were “100 percent appropriate” and “100 percent lawful.”
On the other hand, Mr. Pompeo did not hesitate to advance allegations that Mr. Biden should be investigated for wrongdoing.
“If there was election interference that took place by the vice president, I think the American people deserve to know,” he said on “Face the Nation” on CBS. If “Vice President Biden behaved in a way that was inconsistent with the way leaders ought to operate, I think the American people deserve to know that.”
While vice president, Mr. Biden threatened in 2016 to withhold $1 billion in American loan guarantees if Ukraine’s leaders did not dismiss the country’s top prosecutor, who was widely seen as failing to fight corruption. Ukraine’s Parliament complied and the prosecutor was forced out.
That was the policy of the Obama administration at the time, a consensus policy to try to strengthen the rule of law in Ukraine as it fended off military intervention from Russia. But Mr. Biden’s son Hunter served on the board of an energy company owned by a Ukrainian oligarch who had come under scrutiny by the fired prosecutor.
Mr. Biden asserted on Saturday that he had never spoken with his son about overseas work. On Sunday, Mr. Trump and Mr. Mnuchin both accused him of lying or misstating that, without citing any evidence.
The New Yorker this summer quoted Hunter Biden saying that his father did discuss his Ukrainian business but just one time. “Dad said, ‘I hope you know what you are doing,’” the younger Mr. Biden told the magazine, “and I said, ‘I do.’
“Donald Trump tried to bully a foreign leader into creating a false smear campaign against me and my family,” Mr. Biden said in a fund-raising solicitation on Sunday. “He is intentionally misleading the American people in order to win four more years.”
Mr. Trump spoke with Mr. Zelensky in July shortly after the Ukrainian was elected as a reformer and inaugurated in May. The White House readout of the call that day said only that Mr. Trump congratulated him on his election and that the two “discussed ways to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Ukraine, including energy and economic cooperation.”
The Ukrainian readout of the call at the time, however, hinted at other topics, saying that Mr. Trump had expressed his faith in the new Ukrainian government to “complete investigations into corruption cases that have hampered Ukraine-U. S. cooperation.”
In his comments to reporters on Sunday, Mr. Trump said there was nothing wrong with the call. “The conversation, by the way, was absolutely perfect,” he said. “It was a beautiful, warm, nice conversation.”
Making an unscheduled appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Mr. Giuliani tried to focus attention on Mr. Biden’s actions rather than his own or the president’s.
In an 11-minute, often rambling interview, Mr. Giuliani delivered accusation after accusation against Hunter Biden, painting the former vice president’s son as a grifter and career criminal. “And the kid, unfortunately, is a drug addict,” Mr. Giuliani said.
He called out various Ukrainian officials and the Democratic donor George Soros by name as being involved in a vast criminal conspiracy, connecting the dots on “Ukrainian collusion” that was aimed at influencing the 2016 presidential election.
“When the rest of this comes out,” Mr. Giuliani said, referring to additional allegations about Hunter Biden’s business dealings in China, “this will be a lot bigger than Spiro Agnew.”
Mr. Trump, too, mentioned China and attacked Hunter Biden, saying he was unqualified to be making the money he did with his overseas ventures. “The son, he knew nothing, the son is a stiff, he knew nothing,” the president said.
Other than Mr. Romney, most Republican lawmakers remained silent over the weekend. “I can’t imagine why people have lost their minds so much over these, these daily reports of one thing or another,” Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, said when reporters encountered him in Houston while waiting for Mr. Trump to arrive for a visit. “They seem to consume everybody’s attention in the news coverage.”
Mr. Cornyn demurred when asked whether a president should pressure a foreign leader to investigate a political rival. “I’m not going to speculate,” he said. “I think the president ought to be able to talk to world leaders and have a conversation without necessarily being public because that you need to have those discussions.”
Senator Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania, said more needed to be known to draw a conclusion. “Look, it is not appropriate for any candidate for federal office, certainly, including a sitting president, to ask for assistance from a foreign country. That’s not appropriate,” he said on NBC. “But I don’t know that that’s what happened here.”
Emily Cochrane and Chris Cameron contributed reporting from Washington, and Michael D. Shear from Houston.
Comment's From Readers Of Article Are More Important Than The Article Itself:
"What I want to write is “When will even a *handful* of Republicans finally condemn and stop this president?” But we’ve been waiting for that moment for two and half years and it’s not going to come. The damage to our country and our democracy is probably irreversible. Norms have been destroyed. Republicans have not only learned that they can continue to deadlock Congress (as they have for years) they have now learned, from Trump, that they can play and even nastier and more lawless game with no repercussions. We are in real trouble."
"So first he says he had a "beautiful" conversation with the President of Ukraine, but never mentioned Biden, and would never do something like that. Now that what happened is slowly coming out, Trump now admits that he did bring up Biden, but that it was totally appropriate and wasn't an attempt to dig up dirt on a political opponent. We've seen this pattern of rolling disclosures from this administration before."
"Oh for crying out loud. This issue isn't complicated, brain surgery nor rocket science. If Trump is as innocent as he claims, then kick the complaint into the sunlight instead of keeping it hidden behind door #3. This continual Monty Hall version of "Let's Make a Deal" attitude is becoming as tiresome as it is lame. How about more of Bud Collyer's version of "To Tell the Truth"? Now that would be a refreshing change."
"once again, the "fake news" turns out to be the real news"
"I am getting tired of waiting for Democrats to up their game. They seem to be playing by the rules of 1980. I have pretty much given up listening to them saying they’re going to investigate things, because their investigations are so utterly pathetic. I fully expect this latest episode, with Trump and Ukraine, to blow up in the Democrats faces. Fox and the Swiftboaters will turn it into a big issue against Biden. And it will cost Biden votes. And Democrats will be shocked, shocked, that this happens. I want Trump out. But, boy, am I getting mad at Democrats. Their pathetic record since getting back the House is one reason why people are so disgusted with politicians. Trump has nothing to worry about. He’s playing a rotten game but at least he’s playing it well, and the Democrats are hopelessly inept at fighting him."
"Trump knows that the tapes will have to come out, so he's trying to spin his mentioning Biden as an offhand comment. However, he brought Biden up eight times. That wasn't a comment, it was an arm twisting rant. Brow beating a foreign leader into investigating a political opponent to benefit himself is an impeachable offense."
"For the umpteenth time, if the contents of the complaint is such "a ridiculous story, a partisan whistle-blower,” as Trump has told reporters in the Oval Office, then why not release the dang report, once and for all? Trump can't have it both ways and still expect folks to believe him - all of his posturing and denials and grandstanding on one hand while being resistant and balking at releasing the complaint on the other hand. If the contents of the complaint were not a threat to national security, I highly doubt an intelligence officer AND the inspector general would have been alarmed, stressing the urgency of the contents to be shared with Congress. Innocent people don't stonewall. Innocent people aren't fearful when the truth is on their side."
“The conversation I had was largely congratulatory, with largely corruption, all of the corruption taking place and largely the fact that we don’t want our people like Vice President Biden and his son creating to the corruption already in the Ukraine,” What language is this? The man is completely out of his mind."
"It is time, without delay, to impeach. Anything less is a dereliction of duty and a stain on our democracy."
"Of course he admitted it. If there is anything Trump is good at, it’s committing crimes out in the open and getting away with them. And if there’s anything his party is good at, it’s lying, cheating, aiding and abetting."
"Trump is the most profoundly ignorant, laziest and most blatantly corrupt US President ever. A total con man!"
"I understand Pelosi's reluctance to get behind impeachment proceedings. It's not going anywhere in the Senate, but if this is true she may have no other choice. Trump is off the rails and his arrogant disregard for the law has to be confronted, or who are we now?"
"Trump lives in his own little sordid make-believe world that he fully intends to drag all of us into. His "admission" that he tried to extort Ukraine to do opposition research for his re-election campaign is a variation of "I Could Stand In the Middle Of Fifth Avenue And Shoot Somebody And I Wouldn't Lose Any Voters". There's more than just a whiff of desperation in his attempts to goad Pelosi into an impeachment fight, which is the only way he can divert attention from his spectacular failure as President. If he can turn it into a Me-Against-the-World brawl played out at his high school spirit rallies, on twitter and Fox, he thinks he can claim his spotless record of serial failure is the doing of the Democrats and "the deep state" (aka the resistance or "rule of law"). This is Nero fiddlin' while America burns, hoping his ear-splitting cacophony diverts us from the fires, the smoke and horrific screams. The damage Trump has done to America, all of humanity, the fate of the earth and to history in just 3 years tells us how fragile and precarious are the operating ideals of democracy. America isn't Denmark, Hillary said. But there is something very rotten here."

JUNE 2019 DIMENSIONS ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULES & REVIEW
Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of June 30 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.
Threads do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.
These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Overall Company
The company summer package DVD and photobook releases this month, so each artist will film a short video encouraging fans to buy the product at some point in the month. Following the Hawaii retreat, there’s talk around the company about their CEO’s absence, though he hasn’t been seen around the headquarters of the company often lately anyway.
Important dates:
June 1-6: Hawaii retreat.
Dimensions Soloist 1
She begins her North American tour at the end of the month, though Dimensions doesn’t currently plan on a big push in the market like they do for Unity and Alien, so she isn’t really doing much press while she’s there. Nevertheless, she has a devoted niche fan base in the states to warmly welcome her for her concerts.
June 26: Warning Tour concert at Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, CA, USA.
June 27: Warning Tour concert at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
June 30: Warning Tour concert at Showbox SoDo in Seattle, WA, USA.
Dimensions Soloist 2
He continues his music show promotions for his latest album after returning for the retreat and does his rounds of fan signs, including three outside of Seoul. Dimensions is paying extra attention to physical sales and buzz in online communities this comeback to gauge what venue to book for his first solo concert.
Important dates:
June 15: Fansign in Yongsan, Seoul.
June 19: Fansign in Gangnam, Seoul.
June 23: Fansign in Busan.
June 24: Fansign in Gwangju.
June 26: Fansign in Daegu.
June 27: End of music show promotions.
Gal.actic
Upper management has been giving their all to book Gal.actic CFs to get more positive associations with their names after their last comeback debacle. It hasn’t been easy since a search of Gal.actic’s name still brings up more news of the injunction than anything else, but they’ve managed to land a CF deal with a mobile RPG Immortal Warrior conveniently catering to a male audience by giving each member a scene of their own asking, “Oppa, what do you want to do?”. Word is that they’ll also begin filming a reality show following their comeback, so the girls are asked to prepare a pitch for a reality show concept to present to their management that will be filmed and included in the reality show. The actual concept has already been decided, so the filming is entirely for the entertainment value.
Important dates:
June 20: Immortal Warrior CF filming.
June 29: Reality show concept pitch filming.
Alien
Alien have booked another brand deal, this time with sportswear brand Kappa Korea, which they’re scheduled to film CFs for the brand after returning from a performance in Norway. Each member will get their own highlighted CF, and the group will also shoot a photo shoot for one of the brand’s F/W collections later in the month. This is all in between studio recordings for their next comeback and continued English lessons for their American activities while Dimensions shops around for an American label to sign a contract with, signalling that expansion into the Western market remains in the plans for Alien.
Important dates:
June 11: Performance at Voyage to K-Pop concert in Oslo, Norway.
June 15: Kappa summer CF filming.
June 27: Kappa F/W photo shoot.
MARS
Their Youtube cover project is put on pause this month so that they can focus completely on their comeback and build anticipation from anyone who’s been checking out their covers. They film the single MV mid-month, and then film a CF for California Beach, a water park in Gwangju, later in the month. It’s their first CF in a while since their frequently darker and theatrical image doesn’t make them the most in-demand group on the CF market.
Important dates:
June 14: Callin’ M/V filming.
June 20: California Beach CF filming.
7ROPHY
The track list and concepts for their next comeback are finished, so they’ll be in the studio recording this entire month. They’ve also booked a photo shoot with 1st Look magazine thanks to their recent increase in popularity, though the members don’t have much experience with magazine photoshoots despite their four years in the business. At the end of the month, they’re being named City Ambassadors for Seoul Metropolitan City, which will come with promotional duties for the city, and will attend an ambassador inauguration ceremony at the end of the month. It seems like Dimensions finally cares about them enough again to seek out publicity opportunities, but the 7ROPHY members should know better than anyone how fleeting management’s favor can be.
Important dates:
June 9: Performance at Asia Model Festival (also attending: Aria).
June 11: Photoshoot for July issue of 1st Look magazine.
June 15: 2019 K-Pop Artist Festival in Seoul.
June 27: Seoul Metropolitan City Ambassador ceremony at Sewoon Hall in Seoul, South Korea (also attending: BEE).
Unity
The members get another short break in Seoul, which will involve a lot of recording for their comeback album, including learning the title track choreography, they’ll take off to return to the states and start their North American tour, which they’ll finish off next month. In addition to Good Morning America and Strahan and Sara appearances, where they’ll do their first performance of their yet to be released comeback track, the members will be doing a lot of miscellaneous radio and online promotion targeted at the American audience with the help of the marketing department of the American label Dimensions has signed a distribution deal with.
Important dates:
June 9: K-Pop World Music Festival at Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines (also performing: Fuse).
June 19: Unity 1st North America Tour concert at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, USA.
June 20: Appearance on Good Morning America, Appearance on Strahan and Sara.
June 21: Unity 1st North America Tour concert at Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta, GA, USA.
June 23: Unity 1st North America Tour concert at Watsco Center in Miami, FL, USA.
June 26: Unity 1st North America Tour concert at The Theatre at Grand Prairie in Dallas, TX, USA.
June 28: Unity 1st North America Tour concert at Comerica Center in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
June 30: Unity 1st North America Tour concert at Smart Financial Center in Houston, TX, USA.
Lucid
They’re not in the country when their comeback drops, but as soon as they’re back on Korean soil, a successful round of promotions is the number one priority, and that’s exactly what they’ll achieve. Their song will tie 7ROPHY’s latest comeback as the highest peaking digital performance of any of Dimensions’ girl group songs in recent memory. They can’t quite match 7ROPHY’s recent physical performance even after fan signs all around Korea due to losing some of their fan base with the concept change, but management remains hopeful due to increased popularity in online male communities. This comeback cements Lucid as a rising group to talk about and will bring in more new fans than any of their previous releases. As is common for rising rookies, they’re also scheduled to film a somewhat awkwardly cute video, “Tap Water Song”, celebrating the merits of tap water for an SBS campaign. It’ll be good for Dimensions’ connections, if nothing else.
Important dates:
June 6: Release of “Me Gustas Tu” & pre-recorded Flower Bud mini album showcase, promotions continue until July 6.
June 8: Guesting on KBS Cool FM Kiss The Radio.
June 14: SBS Tap Water Song Campaign filming.
June 15: Fansign in Busan, South Korea.
June 18: Guesting on SBS Power FM Youngstreet.
June 20: Fansign in Daejeon, South Korea.
June 21: Guesting on KBS Cool FM Gayo Plaza.
June 22: Fansign in Gangnam, Seoul.
June 25: Guesting on KBS Cool FM Kiss The Radio.
June 27: Guesting on SBS Power FM Old School.
June 29: Fansign in Yongsan, Seoul.
June 30: Fansign in Daegu, South Korea.

Frances Lydia Yocom
Tumblr media
Today’s post was written by Lorna Peterson, who is also the source of our posts on Betty Jenkins (2017), Clare Beck (2017), Aurelia Elizabeth Whittington Franklin (2016), Leaonead Pack Drain-Bailey (2015), and Clara Stanton Jones (2014). The image above is from “Small in Stature, Great in Spirit: A Tribute to Frances Yocom” by Betty Bolton, which appeared in North Carolina Libraries Volume 22, Number 3 in 1964.
Born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio, on May 13, 1899, librarian Frances Lydia Yocom’s contributions to librarianship are many, but most notably are marked by her thoughtful, groundbreaking works on subject retrieval of research about and by African Americans, her book reviews of works concerning African Americans, and her bibliographies, which preserve for us titles that without her documentation would likely remain lost to future readers.
Her published works provide a bibliographic foundation for understanding the complexity of subject information retrieval, controlled vocabulary, and implicit bias.  Notably, her Berkeley MA thesis published as A list of subject headings for books by and about the Negro, by the H.W. Wilson Publishing Company in 1940 and cited in Arna Bontemps 1944 Library Quarterly article “Special Collections of Negroana is one such seminal work.  Her 1942 review of The Negro Federal Government Worker by Lawrence J. W. Hayes in the Southern Economic Journal minces no words on discrimination and shortcomings of the Civil Service merit system as researched and described by the author Lawrence Hayes.  In the same issue of the Southern Economic Journal Ms. Yocom reviews with great care and praise, Eliza Gleason’s The Southern Negro and the Public Library[1] which in turn has been cited by library historian Cheryl Knott.[2] These titles are just a few of the works published by a scholar who is in need of remembering and deserving of a deep, and rich, biography.
Who was this white woman who worked at historically black colleges and universities as well as predominately white institutions, and was a librarian who used her bibliographic skills in the crusade for racial justice? Who and what shaped her mission to live in a world of racial equality?
The Yocom family moved to Oberlin in 1907, where the father, Eli King Yocom owned a dry goods store with his brother Joseph.  Frances attended Oberlin public schools; she graduated from Oberlin High School in 1917, and graduated from Oberlin College in 1921 with a major in English.  Her obituary lists her having earned the Master of Arts degree from Columbia University Teachers College in 1925. Oberlin alumni magazines from 1927 and 1929 report on Ms. Yocom working at Straight College (a predecessor of Dillard University) as a librarian and also as an English teacher.  Frances Yocom’s interest in librarianship was greater than in teaching, as evidenced by her move back to Ohio to work in a library. She is listed in the 1930 Census as living with her mother and working as a librarian at Oberlin College.[3] She also lived in Cleveland where she earned the B.S. in library science from Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in 1931.
From Fisk University, Nashville Tennessee records, she is additionally listed in the teacher records/teacher reports for 1931-32, 1935-37.  It is here that her friendship developed with Fisk University history professor Theodore S. Currier, who was such an important part of the enriched undergraduate education experienced by future librarian Aurelia Whittington, and her future historian husband John Hope Franklin, that Frances Yocom was mentor to Aurelia Whittington.[4]  (Note: Lorna Peterson wrote about Aurelia Whittington Franklin for Women of Library History in 2017. --Ed.)
In 1939, Yocom earned the M.S. in librarianship from the University of California, Berkeley.  Her MA thesis was “List of Subject Headings for Books by and about the Negro,” 1939, M.A. (California) as cited in “Graduate Theses Accepted by Library Schools in the United States from July, 1938, to June, 1945” by Dorothy Ethlyn Cole, Library Quarterly, Vol. 17, No. 1 (Jan., 1947), page 56.
The January 1946 issue of CRL News, lists Ms. Yocom as a Fisk University associate librarian and cataloger “for a number of years” who has taken a position at Humboldt State College, Arcata CA.[5] From Humboldt State College which is now Humboldt State University, Frances Yocom took a cataloging position at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where she retired from in 1964.  Her career at Chapel Hill was memorialized by Betty Bolton “Small in Stature, great in spirit: A Tribute to Frances Yocom ” North Carolina Libraries, Volumes 22, no.3, Spring 1964, pages 87-89.
After retirement, Frances Yocom returned to Oberlin, Ohio and later, moved into Copeland Oaks Retirement Community, Sebring, Ohio. From her obituary, it is stated she kept up an active correspondence with friends and former colleagues.  One can only hope that the letters, diaries, and photos of this remarkable librarian have been preserved.  This was a life rich in work, education, travel, living in various sections of the United States, and quiet social activism.  She was involved in the American Library Association and attended its meetings. She presented at the Southeastern Library Association once it integrated. She is acknowledged in the works of some the nations foremost civil rights activists and historians—for example, Harry Emerson Fosdick[6] and John Hope Franklin.  She was a librarian dedicated to civil rights and social justice, using the expertise of librarianship to make positive social change. Her story needs to be told.
