What if it's not actually like Worship™ per se but like you said; a level of yea vs nay? What if it's more about tipping the scales of respect? But there's respect through fear and then respect through confidence, or through hope, or any other positive avenues.

The Klyntar essentially being able to control how powerful their KiB is at any given time would actually be kind of great. Like maybe it was the one thing Knull couldn't change upon creating them. Like it or not, they - and he - are connected to the larger cosmic web, like a universal system of checks and balances.

I wouldn't call myself an expert on cosmic Marvel by any stretch, but even in Englehart's Silver Surfer series, everyone is shown to have limits. Even Galactus. We see what happens when someone tries to tip the balance - like Thanos with the Infinity Gems and gauntlet. Death herself was not impressed by his attempts to woo her because she, like Galactus, understood that Eternity will always lean towards balance.

Sometimes I get the impression that Knull was actually quite immature and had no regard for this balance. He was, as you said, throwing a temper tantrum/old man yells at cloud about literally one symbiote/host pair.

Now, granted, I don't know that Eddie will do much better as far as understanding BUT if he were to prove himself to the Klyntar? If he actually listened to the Eventuality and possibly sought the counsel of those who actually know what they're doing, like, oh I don't know, Galan or the Phoenix Force or even just Norrin, if he actually CARED and TRIED, he'd probably gain power in that regard! That is, if he doesn't step down (because sometimes realizing you're not the best person for the job is also what needs to be done).

I'm getting way off topic now but I have so many thoughts about the lost potential of literally everything that's happened since vol 4 started in 2018. We've had essentially net zero growth for Eddie in the last six years of comics. But I guess that's really what fanfic is for!

everything about Venom vol 4 gets so much funnier if you consider Knull having a knack for being overly self-important and probably exaggerating his role in the universe. the dude was defeated by two blond guys, a long-dead Vietnam vet, and a weird hybrid kid. and a completely unremarkable Symbiote that he literally went all the way from Klyntar JUST to try and defeat. like he resurrected the Grendel from hundreds of parsecs away after literal centuries to try and subjugate one of his creations whose defining traits are "chronic depression" and "really into human men with issues and large shoulders". a Symbiote who was a Problem™ which Klyntar was mostly just exasperated by.

like, come on, seriously -- Knull went toe to toe with Celestials, the only survivor of sorts being Galan, and also took on Silver Surfer and the Odinson... and it's Eddie fucking Brock he's fixated on? makes you wonder if Knull is even all that powerful on his own, or if he's basically nothing without the entire Symbiote race behind him.

like, damn, no wonder Klyntar was able to keep him caged up for hundreds and hundreds of years.

Alrighty everyone, time for my thoughts on the last 3 eps of the Magnus Archives. I’ll post my thoughts on S5 and the series as a whole in a separate post, to be made either later today or potentially tomorrow.

TL;DR: loved the ending, had a thought or two; and look forwards to one more post where I basically write my thoughts on the series either later today or tomorrow!

So, MAG 198: Yes, that edge of the cliff fear is definitely rather unsubtle. Particularly in regards to their imminent choice. Also, have to say, I think Jon is entitled to being a little bitch about the cliff domain when he had to deal with a free fall domain via Mike Crew back in season 3. It is morbidly amusing that when Martin hears that his choices are: jump off the cliff to my pseudo death now or jump off the cliff after Jon talks at length about how terrifying watching people jump off the cliff is, he takes the jump immediately option. Listen, I’m sure Jon would have too if he had a choice, but alas Eye is hungee and Jon’s gotta be the mouth for a bit.

Also, big sad that the cultists all got stolen again while Georgie and Melanie had to listen to their screams.

MAG 199: You know they actually discussed that far more than I thought they were going to. So a misnomer that I’ve picked up on in fanfiction is that I thought there would be a less even handed evaluation of the situation. However, Basira did a good job at forcing everyone to discuss all possible avenues of discussion. However, I find it interesting that Basira draws the line at deliberate mass murder. That sounds terrible out of context I will admit, but up until this point she’s been rather willing to entertain a rather wide selection of options when it boils down to difficult choices. But in this one instance when given the choice between basically committing mass euthanasia/genocide and passively letting people suffer till their “natural” end she refuses to entertain the idea that the first is even an option. And she’s been keeping “just let an entire world of people suffer for an incomprehensible amount of time till the End finally finds them” on the table next to the other amazing /s option “send the horror terrors to upwards of infinite alternate universes to wreak havoc on unprepared innumerable numbers of people”. Just, it’s interesting is all.

On a different note, the Web is getting in a final “fuck you” at Jon with the web lighter by subtly pushing Georgie to borrow it by pulling on her old smoking addiction since I guess none of the others had one presumably. Plus, “Can I have a cigarette” is a nice call back to the first episode with the Anglerfish.

Also, Would like to throw down with Martin over his self-esteem. Thoroughly disagree that they were incompatible without the spooky trauma. I think if they had met before Jon was given power in the Archives, or if someone else had been Archivist while they both were Archival Assistants, I fully think they could have at least been friends. Just because you trauma bond with someone doesn’t mean you wouldn’t have bonded with them otherwise.

I would also like to formally welcome Traumatized Jon™ back to the show for one last hurrah. Is it terrible to say that I missed him? He does bring up good points, even if everyone seems to disagree.

AND FINALLY MAG 200.

I’ve heard the ending I think once or twice already, but I had never heard the origin of the Fears story before. I guess it’s still ambiguous if the Fears were still technically a shitty chain e-mail, but at least in the way that it’s framed it mostly seems like they originated in that universe. Particularly since it started as an amorphous blob and then evolved from there versus how they were sent out as a fractured, netted thing that even if you dissolved it down would still hold some “sharp edges” as it were. Gotta admit though, nice to know that at least on some level the plan worked. The Fears were completely removed, all powers were gone, and people were able to get back to how it was before the Change. A part of me wants to know what happened to Simon Fairchild, but then again it’s far more horrifying if you don’t fill in the blanks on that. Also have to love the ambiguous ending for our two fave blorbos. Jon and Martin, sent to the cosmos with the Fears, destination Unknown. The ending definitely fit, it didn’t seem like anyone acted too out of character to make the ending happen the way it did.

something about addiction, and adhd, and trying to recover, and not getting out of the hole.

you need to summon up a lot of energy. to climb all the hurdles. to do all the things, to get enough of them *done* that you can get heard and noticed and seen by practitioners for long enough to get out of the hole.

you already know the organisations who need to help you are staffed by a) people struggling, underpaid, worn down to the bit, understandably poor at their jobs b) people who actively hate you and want you dead, because addicts who can't get themselves together deserve to lie in a gutter somewhere c) people who are both of these things, probably.

you stop trying, because you've thrown yourself at the system in desperation enough times that you're pretty sure there's no one actually on the other end of the trust fall. the times they were, some other link in the chain fell through. on separate occasions in both the UK and US healthcare systems (which are very different in physical healthcare but both equally shite for mental healthcare), i've been told by one assessing party that i should go to the hospital and get checked in, and have someone down the chain decide that wasn't needed. why? idk, because they hate my transness maybe, and/or because they didn't have enough resources, enough sleep, enough pay, enough time, because they have no incentive to care and every incentive to resent the patients who come through their doors. because the models are broken.

you get over one hurdle then you get smacked down at another. you run a whole chain of hurdles maybe. assume you can do that, which i did at the time. you're still in an overwhelmed, broken system, one person who's chronically struggling but mostly stable amid a sea of emergencies. you know no one actually cares who is also in a position to help. you feel the social safety net, thin as it ever was, but now actively fraying under you, while below and beneath(tm) you on the web all the people who fell down first nod and sigh

i hate *gestures to all of this*. i wish i knew anything else. i don't know what other countries' healthcare systems are like but there has to be something better than this for mental health. i would like to hear about some positive alternatives.
