10/30/24 WIP Wednesday (CLOSED) | TBD AU

Andrew crosses the remaining distance between them and raises his hand up to Neil’s face, but does not touch him. “So I want you to tell me right now that you don’t want to be with me, that you don’t want to stay, that you want to keep running and you want to be nothing more than a remnant. If you can do that then I will never bring this up again. We can be friends just like we were before.” Andrew promises and his head is pounding along with his heart.

He doesn’t say that it will kill him to hear Neil say ‘no’ because a coerced acceptance isn’t what he wants. He wants Neil’s absolute and enthusiastic ‘yes’ because that is what they’ve always wanted from one another.

But if Neil says ‘no’ then Andrew will have to return the favor of thanking him. For giving Andrew’s life meaning, for the kisses, the sex, the road trips, the souvenirs, for giving him his relationship with his brother, and for never once being like the monsters that haunted Andrew’s past.

He'll thank Neil for everything and for being amazing.

“I should…have been more clear when we talked about this earlier and agreed to talking during this. I liked all of the talk about how I felt, what you were going to do, what you wanted to do, and what you were going to do. I…don’t want you to degrade me when we’re together like that.” He watches as Neil wraps his arms around his middle as if to try and comfort himself.

Andrew feels like Neil has just said something in a completely new foreign language.

“Neil, what did I say that you took as me degrading you?” Andrew asks because he can’t think of a single degrading comment he’s made when they got started.

10/9/24 WIP Wednesday (Closed) | TBD AU

Aaron grabs him by the shoulders and Andrew hates that his expression likely mirrors his brothers in this moment.

Desperation paints Aaron’s face.

“Yes you are! You were! You were happy - before!” Aaron insists, “You are meant to be happy because you were! You were so fucking happy before the accident Andrew. I didn’t understand it back then, I didn’t realize it but you were and I swear to God if you don’t give up you can be happy again.” his hands shake as they squeeze Andrew’s shoulders and there are tears falling from his brother’s face.

It always feels like the closest Andrew will ever get to being able to cry himself and the sight of Aaron crying always brings Andrew back from whatever ledge he had found himself staring down from.

“Aaron-”

“Josten’s a fucking liar and he’s stupid as hell because he definitely fucking likes you. Did he say that he doesn’t fucking like you? Actually say it?!” Aaron demands.

Andrew pauses.

“I’m sorry Andrew, I can’t accept your feelings.” it still hurts to even think about it but…

“He didn’t say that.” Andrew looks at his brother.

“What did he say?” Aaron demands.

“He said: ‘I’m sorry Andrew, I can’t accept your feelings.’ not that he doesn’t like me but-”

“Fucking Neil. Fuck him for real. This is why I can’t stand that guy, he’s such a constant pain in my fucking ass. I swear to God!” Aaron bitches mightily. “That asshole likes you Andrew, he likes you so much that he’s absolutely fucking stupid about it.” Andrew blinks, thrown off by his brother as his tears dry up from the heat of his anger. “You are going to be happy.” 

Andrew, for the life of him, feels threatened.

Andrew stares at Neil and only comes back to himself when Neil raises his hand up to Andrew’s hand, “I’ve seen the clips Andrew. When Riko was coming for my head…you ran.” Neil’s voice is soft and Andrew slowly lets go of Neil’s ear, watching and seeing that the blood had stopped. “I don’t even know if you know how to hesitate.”

He doesn’t want to keep having this conversation, “It’s going to scar.”

Neil’s expression only softens further, "I don't mind having a mark from you." He smiles, dimples making their most beloathed appearance on his face.

Andrew knows that he’d burn the whole world to ashes just to keep seeing them.

“I’m done talking about this,” Allison declares before she turns and focuses on Neil. Her eyes pierced down into his very soul, “The Fall Banquet is coming up, since you can’t piss on Danny’s grave yet you have to let me dress you.” She says.

Neil blinks and opens his mouth to say something but Andrew cuts in before she can. “I already called dibs Reynolds,” he says, dryly.

“Have I not always returned him to you looking better than you ever imagined?” Allison asks, raising one of her perfectly plucked eyebrows.

Andrew pauses, likely thinking of any number of times that Allison has been the one to buy Neil clothes and dress him up. Neil feels his cheeks start to redden the longer the silence goes on, imagining Andrew flipping through a picture book.

10/23/24 WIP Wednesday (Closed) | TBD AU

Andrew wakes up staring at the white ceiling of a hospital room. He knows this because it is not the first time that this has happened to him, he’s been here a few times at this point but in this moment he remembers the last truly memorable time that this had happened. He’d woken up with five years down the drain, turned his head and saw a gorgeous man who looked like he hadn’t slept in days.

If he hadn’t been such a fucking movie trope he would have stayed silent and he knows that man would have said something to make him realize that something was amiss. Instead he noticed how this man’s face shape was nearly identical to the suspicious freshman they had just gotten on the team. “Josten?”

He’d been too out of it still to really question the way Neil Josten’s entire face shattered at the sound of his last name. To question why he didn’t say a word or ever show up in front of Andrew again after he hit the call button that had the doctors coming in. Never showed up in front of Andrew again except in their dorm room.

Because it was their dorm room, even if Andrew hadn’t thought so at the time.

Neil Josten looked him in the eye for a second time and told him he was amazing after thanking him.

He turns his head to the side this time and sees Aaron and Katelyn asleep in the shitty plastic chairs. He’s surprised that Aaron would let Katelyn sleep in one considering how uncomfortable it must be, he dismisses that after a moment because Katelyn was probably the one who had insisted on being right here.

He turns his head to the other side.

Nothing.

But not the nothing he had wanted to see.

3/19/25 WIP Wednesday (CLOSED) | Math Nerd AU

Riko takes the two of them on a tour of Castle Evermore where they’ll be training for at least the next two weeks, longer if Riko plays his cards right. Moreau was given much the same tour years earlier but there have been numerous remodels and upgrades since then so it’s different enough for him to get lost.

Neil has never seen it before.

“These are the locker rooms,” Riko shows them where they will be putting their things. He sees Neil looking at Kevin’s locker for a moment but doesn’t fault him since it is the locker right next to the one Riko directed him to.

Locker #3 while Moreau is in Locker #4.

After what Neil assumes is an eternity plus thirty minutes they are walking out of the store with Neil’s new phone in hand. Andrew managed to get the same phone number that he had before which is nice since Neil would hate to have to learn a new one.

He slumps back into his seat, arms crossed and unhappy to be reconnected to the modern world. His final act of defiance is that he will refuse to set up his voicemail for at least eight months.

Andrew misses the turn to head back to the Tower and Neil turns to look at him with a raised eyebrow. “Where are we going?” he asks, doubtful that Andrew would be so kind as to take them on a nice minor detour to the Grand Canyon where he can throw his phone into it.

Neil and Moreau place their equipment into the lockers as well as their toiletry supplies for their post-training showers. “During your time here training with us you two will be paired together,” Riko explains as he guides them out of the locker room. 

“How will that work?” Moreau asks, bolder than he should be but Riko is trying to make a good impression.

“You and Neil will be doing the training for Backliners,” Riko says.

Moreau looks at Neil in shock, “But you’re a Striker?”

“Yeah, but I think it’s good to diversify, don’t you think Jean?” Neil asks with an easy smile to Moreau. Riko’s glad that his gaze is elsewhere because Riko can’t help the slight snarl on his lips when he hears that word in relation to Moreau.

“I wouldn’t worry about it,” Neil says and his lack of care seems to bleed the anxiety out of Jean.

Andrew doesn’t hurry to the stadium but eventually an hour after they were supposed to be there they pull up. If Andrew has a fresh vanilla bean frappe from Starbucks in his hand as he does so, well he doesn’t care if they notice.

Riko Moriyama and Tetsuji Moriyama are waiting in front of the stadium for them. Andrew wonders if the two have been waiting out there the entire hour or if they have someone on lookout duty.

It’s all so fucking stupid.

“Depends on how many more wrong turns Andrew feels the need to make,” Neil comments lightly.

“At least four more,” Andrew says, in the middle of another wrong turn. He’s not counting that one in his count.

“Do we have a time we were supposed to be there by?” Jean asks, settling in the backseat.

“They said they would be waiting for us at 3:30 PM,” Neil comments and Andrew looks at the 4:08 PM time on the car’s clock before he takes a correct turn to start them back on the path.

“Isn’t that an issue?” Jean asks.

“What, so Andrew’s is made with gay thread?” Aaron asks rolling his eyes as he grabs the one on the left.

“No,” Andrew rolls his eyes and takes his tuxedo out of his cousin’s hands. “My tuxedo is fitted to me, yours is fitted to you. It isn’t that complicated Aaron.” Andrew says.

“But we’re identi-” Aaron pauses and looks between the two of them.

Andrew and Aaron are identical, but they no longer live their lives identically. All the time that Aaron has spent working to become a doctor, pouring over medical textbooks, drowning himself in coffee to have the energy to go to class, and eating whatever he could get his hands on?

Andrew was at the gym, against his will.

Andrew looks up and he remembers what that burn looked like when it was fresh and he peeled the bandage off in a dingy motel room. Andrew remembers how those lips feel when they’re pressed against his. Andrew remembers how that hair feels when he runs his hand through it at all levels of washed and unwashed. Andrew remembers the warmth in those eyes whenever they had landed on Andrew. Andrew remembers how that sweat tastes on his tongue. Andrew remembers that deodorant.

Andrew remembers Neil Josten.

He even remembers how he forgot him even if he doesn’t understand how he could.

“Andrew, it’s going to be okay.” Neil promises, holding his head still and Andrew remembers that it’s the exact same thing he’d done last time. Andrew vaguely wonders if it’s bad he’s relieved that even the desperation and fear in Neil’s eyes is the same as the last time, that Neil still feels this much for him. Another part of him is irritated that his brother was right - Neil Josten does love him so much that he’s fucking stupid about it.

That’s fine though.

Neil’s in good company.

Andrew’s the idiot who forgot about Neil.

“The medics are here.” Andrew hears Smith’s voice off to the side but when he tries to turn his head to look at his teammate Neil holds his head straight. “Don’t try to move Andrew, you took a hard hit.” Smith kneels down and comes within Andrew’s line of sight.

Andrew can’t focus on much else other than drinking in the sight of Neil, he saw him 5 minutes ago but it also feels like 5 years at the same time.

“Abram.” He says the name that Neil’s only given to him.

He holds on just long enough to his consciousness to see Neil recognize him.

“Where did you get the chloroform from?” Seth asks.

“That I cannot reveal.” Neil says.

“The Seven Eleven down the way.” Andrew says as he comes with a bag of frozen peas into the living room. It’s still strange seeing him be all… domestic like this. He holds the peas to Neil’s cheek and it’s such a strange sight that it takes Seth a moment to realize what the ex-monster had said.

“You used chloroform from Seven Eleven on me?!” he demands.

“Seven Eleven has chloroform?!” Abby asks.

1/15/25 WIP Wednesday (CLOSED) | Pretty Boy

Neil spins around and slams himself into Andrew’s dresser the moment Andrew’s fingertips graze the back of his neck. His eyes are wide and there are tears threatening to fall from them. Andrew feels like the whole damn world must be ending the moment he sees one crest Neil’s eyelid and run down his cheek, “Don’t touch me. I-I just need a minute.” Neil manages, seemingly unaware of the tears.

“I won’t touch you,” Andrew promises. He shouldn’t have reached for Neil in the first place so he holds his own hands behind his back in a move that mirrors what Neil would do during their earlier days., “Just, talk to me Neil. What happened, what did I say or do?” he asks.

Neil looks like there is nothing in the entire world he wants to talk about less, “I just…I need a minute. Just give me a couple minutes Andrew. I just…pl-” Neil visibly bites the word back before it can leave his mouth but Andrew hears it all the same. Andrew’s stomach is somewhere near the core of the earth with how far it has dropped.

Neil comes up to stand by Matt as he watches Andrew from the front door get into the elevator with the suitcase. “He didn’t need to be that rude about it.” He huffs.

“Well, it’s not like he has to accept it happily either.” Neil says, seemingly unbothered by the whole exchange even though he was the one that Andrew had been rude to.

Matt decides to let it go, he can’t be getting all pissy about Andrew Minyard’s bad behavior when at least Andrew was mostly a noble gas. As long as you didn’t interact with him or the environment around him then he wouldn’t react.
