"You're adopted." Andrew throws the barb at Aaron as he stalks his way back inside.

"Like you aren't?" Aaron wheezes not bothering to pick himself up from the ground.

Andrew stomps through the house ignoring as Nicky comments that he's tracking dirt in and climbs into his GS. This is the worst Thanksgiving break of his entire life, he literally cannot fathom one that could be worse than this.

And it's all Neil Josten's fault.

"Because I wanted to." Neil answers like the bastard he is. It could be the answer to most of his questions and it can be the answer to absolutely none of them.

"You left because you wanted to?" Andrew asks just to be ornery.

"I wanted to make sure you stayed safe. Me leaving was part of that." He hears paper in the background being shuffled.

"Are you working on something?"

"First quarter budget. The Young Master Moriyama is particular about things being finalized."

The two of them sit in silence for a long moment before Andrew pulls a picture from his pocket, the one thing he saved.

It's a picture of him and Alex right before they went to Disneyland. It was the only photo he had of Alex.

He handed it to Aaron with force casualness, "He was Alex and he was...my friend." it didn't feel like the correct term for Alex, even now. Alex had been everything good in his life, even now he knows that Alex had a hand in most of the decent things that happened to him.

"C'mon Andrew, you went on cross country trips to try and find him. You've been staring at his face and other places that I'm not going to mention for months what was-" Aaron pauses.

"Don't."

"You remembered his eyes?"

The rest of summer was a series of trials that steels his resolve to never ever let Andrew and Captain Neil find out that he knows exactly what they are saying to one another.

He has taken to doing his absolute best to avoid Captain Neil and Andrew as much as humanly possible during any time he doesn’t need to be near them. It’s not like there are many opportunities where he needs to be near the two of them while the two of them are near one another. At practice Captain Neil and Andrew are rarely near one another on the court due to their positions.

The only real threat is when they’re all working on taking shots on goal but Smith doesn’t have to join in on that sort of training too often since he’s a Defensive Dealer. Still the things that Kevin yelled at him after he shot so wide a rebound that he almost took Andrew out didn’t seem fair considering Smith had to hear Captain Neil offer to suck Andrew’s dick if he shut out the practice.

He feels like he should get some grace for that one.

Aaron takes the picture and looks at it, "You're smiling."

"No I'm not." Andrew rolls his eyes.

"Yes you are. I know what it looks like when you smile even if you don't."

"I had been informed that I could eat whatever I wanted at Disneyland. It's not deep I was 12." He rolls his eyes.

"He took you to Disneyland?" Aaron blinks in shock looking back at the picture. "What had you realize it was him?"

On his third try he only misses one of the rebounds and one of his fellow freshmen pats him on the back, “Wow, first try Smith!” one of the girls says and Smith isn’t sure what her name is but he’s pretty sure it’s Nancy?

“Thanks Nancy,” he says before he can second guess himself and she smiles back brightly.

Oh thank god he got it right.

“Wait, was that your first try?” Lisa, his fellow defensive dealer sub, came up to ask.

“No, third.” Smith answers truthfully.

“Wait, why’d you run it three times?” Ollie asks, “Did you mess it up that-”

“Freshmen! This isn’t time to shoot the shit around the water cooler! Get back to your drills!” Captain Neil yelled and Smith merely put his visor back down and went to move onto the next drill in the circuit.

"I never asked, but who was he?" Aaron pauses, "Is he?"

"He's Neil."

"I wasn't obsessed." Andrew looks away from the fire so as not to acknowledge the evidence in the contrary.

“Smith, where the fuck are you?!” Smith hears Kevin yell from right next to him. 

He only feels a little bad when the Exy legend jumps a foot in the air when Smith taps his shoulder. “I’m right here.” he says and Kevin swears before looking at him.

“When did you get there?” he demands.

“Whole time, sir.” Smith answers and it has only been a week of practice yet this is already a familiar song and dance at this point.

Neil laughs, "I guess I can't deny that." he says before Andrew hears the sound of a door sliding open and he wonders if Neil has gone out to look at the stars. "Do you see the two stars right below the moon?" he asks.

Andrew doesn't.

"Yeah."

"So connect those two with the four that make a curling line. That's the celestial fishing hook."

"Neil."

"You said to make something up."

"So you drank a dirty one?" Andrew asks.

"No, not a dirty one. I didn't even taste the regular one." Neil continues to stir a bit worried by the color the drink had turned after all the grenadine. "Just, my mom ordered me one I guess. After like an hour the bartender put one down in front of me."

"And you didn't drink it?"

"Absolutely not, I thought it was either drugged or a test. Some random guy put a drink in front of me." Neil takes a tentative sip.

Kevin didn’t call him over for the rest of the practice and Smith considered that a minor win, if nothing else. The practice, like all the others, had plenty of clashes between the Foxes and Smith spent the time that the rest of the team was spending arguing to head over and grab some water from the benches.

Ah, sweet wonderful water.

He’s pointedly taken to avoiding the Gatorade since all the sugar and acid tends to make his stomach burn.

Practice ends early with Sebastian whacking Jack in the leg and Jack screaming bloody murder.

Smith is more staring through the drama and Coach Wymack calling practice to an end than he is actually staring at it. He’s still thinking about his upcoming first semester of college and wondering if maybe he could switch out his early Friday morning class to a different spot. He wants to be conversational in Japanese but…at what cost?

Andrew smokes half of a pack of cigarettes in the car as he drives around. He drives by the house every once in a while hoping that it'll have caught fire but it reminds stubbornly flame-free every time he passes through, though he is sure that Nicky would argue otherwise.

After around 2 hours he gets himself some drive-thru food and sips on a milkshake while he looks at the photo of himself and Alex.

He pulls up his phone and Neil's contact

Andrew shoves Aaron down and it is only through his hatred of organized religion that Andrew resists the urge to follow through on his apparent instincts and shoves him away from the fire.

Aaron goes down laughing all the same.

"You saw his eyes after he got wine thrown in them for defending you and realized he was the guy you went crazy about after being kind of crazy about him for months!" Aaron wheezes and it is not because of the force with which Andrew had shoved him.

He grabs his picture out of Aaron's hand.

He really didn’t mind the extra practice figuring that since his whole college career depended on being kind of good at Exy he should work hard to make sure he was kind of good at Exy. He’s still shocked that his high school coach had sent his reel out for consideration to D1 schools. 

Still, running the same drill 6 times was approaching a bit too much.

He only managed to avoid running it for a 7th time when Ollie had spoken up and asked what had been so bad about Smith’s 6th attempt. It was only then that Kevin seemed to realize that he had called Smith before. Kevin, indignant, had asked Smith why he hadn’t said anything and Smith only shrugged and said he figured he just still needed to improve something for Kevin to give him a pass.

Kevin had merely looked at him for what felt like an eternity before Captain Neil called for Smith to come over and do agility drills.
