Again, I’m talking about this to show a pattern of behavior. Mullenweg’s abuse of power, his need for control, his paranoia, his oversized sense of importance and victimhood – none of that is new.

Matt Mullenweg is a man in dire need of consequences. Not just on behalf of his company and employees, who, thanks to Mullenweg, have been dealt a trust and reputational blow from which I’m genuinely unsure they can recover. Not just for members of the WordPress community, many of whom have built their livelihoods around what appears to have been an empty promise told purely for Mullenweg’s enrichment. He desperately needs consequences, because I don’t think he’s capable of voluntarily course-correcting at this point.

I hope that collectivity, Tumblr users are enormously proud that prolonged exposure to this site has turned Matt Mullenweg in to an unhinged shit poster. Incredible scenes happening.

For the record though, I fully support him and everything he's done so far. Fuck WPengine and their egregious profiteering from open source ecosystem and the commons.

In fact, the first time I met Stallman in 2011(ish) we had a long argument over dinner about how he and the GPL failed to foresee SAAS and the kinds of value extraction that's completely possible under it's license.

WordPress drama

I suspect Matt Mullenweg (@photomatt) is on balance more in the right than WPEngine. But the latter is focusing on showing themselves as the empathetic victims, while the former is forced to stay focused mostly on an esoteric trademark issue. I strongly suspect WPE did a lot of unbecoming but difficult to describe things behind the scenes, before the public snap. But all most people see is the snap, and that snap has to be explained with a specific legal reason.

An eventful few weeks for Wordpress, WP Engine, and Automattic. Every time I've sat to write a few lines about this, I've had to start over, as the situation has rapidly evolved. WP Engine sent a cease and desist to Automattic, and later sued the parent company of tumblr, and its founder Matt Mullenweg. Mullenweg has a history of responding to criticism in what I would call an unprofessional manner, using not only his own social channels, but those of the Wordpress Foundation. It is unfortunate to see another fracture in the open source space where users are victim to petty squabbles from those in positions of leadership. especially when some of those are inclined to act the way Mullenweg has.

15 year old hacker exposed a zendesk backdoor impacting a large swathe of F500 companies after the company declined to pay out associated bug bounties. its a shame that what should be a good relationship between bug hunters, especially ones showing a lot of promise in the early stages of their career, are met with such a poor disclosure / payout process. not to mention the latent financial impact of your product being known for not engaging with security researchers. zendesk has posted their own "retrospective" on the topic.

WordPress  和  WP Engine 的争端让人诧异，Automattic  的 Matt Mullenweg  呈现出一种“极权领导”的架势，这完全崩溃了我对  WordPress  生态的理想想象。 WordPress  作为一个开源软件，无数的人为之做出了努力，拥有了一个巨大的社区和数量极其庞大的用户；除此以外，它支持了很多人的生计，甚至很多个有规模的企业；甚至，它也支持创始人成立一家商业公司并获得一个庞大体量的成功。 这是多么美好的事情啊。我曾经认为，Wordpress 和 Automattic 是比 Google 更让人钦佩的样板，是开源理想的典范……很正常，Matt 也就是偶像级的人物。但是从他（更代表自己，而不是代表  Automattic 和 WordPress）和 WP Engine 干起来以后，张牙舞爪，既不尊重 WordPress 开源的基本规则，也不尊重 Automattic 的员工，更别说在斗争中采取的手段比较激烈和粗鲁了。 更甚的是，Wordpress.org 即它开源的部分，存在巨大的模糊性，比如他的专一管理权，缺乏开源的管理机制或者 NPO 方式的协商机制，更像是“一个人的”。 但，这是20年以上很多人参与的结果。可能有些东西尚可争议，但是 WordPress.org 的管理权背后，难免有故意为之的嫌疑，加上  Automattic 的公司属性，整个事情呈现出一种“极权独裁”感。 这个事情尚未落定，Linux 社区也爆出戏剧性甚至荒唐的部分，Linus 也是采取了粗暴的方式取消了全部 .ru 后缀邮箱的用户的全部权限，然后采取了非常社交媒体极化的发言方式。同样，这件事情也更多像是他的个人行为，是自己意识形态投射的行动，没有一个议事机制和商讨过程，是一个“没有协商”的结果。 而他所采取的行动和进行的辩护，一样是有“独裁极权”之嫌，.ru邮箱涉及的或许不仅是俄罗斯人，也包含俄罗斯裔，这种将所有人视作俄罗斯极权/战争一部分的行为，真是意识形态层面一种很糟糕的状态。我承认合规可能的存在，也承认实际操作存在困难，但是包含了辩解在内的粗暴行动，本身却掉入了技术独裁的坑。 掌握代码即掌握权力，而这正是技术提出的意识形态挑战的核心。 我不认为事情是简单的，但是恰好，“协商”就是为复杂事务发展出来的方法论，而组织机制和行权过程，则是复杂事务和社区所必须的。 非常糟糕。好事物在这个奇异的时代以如此诡谲的方式摧毁，让人更加遗憾和伤心。但是可见这个奇怪时代和对立的趋势之下，真正是一切才刚刚开始吧。 悲剧总在路上。
